i hear the sunspot is a story about being human first, disabled second and a bl third. it doesnt flow like a bl and has very brief moments of romance because its not intended to be read/watched a romance.
the mangaka did not write it as a BL because she herself wasnt even familiar with it as a genre until after she started publishing. she was writing a story that just happens to also feature queer romance.
the live drama is not going to end with them getting together. its an adaption of just one series within the story and even at the most current series, they only barely got together.
the story is not unrealistic in how it handles communication (or lack thereof). its a lot easier to judge characters (and people in real life) when you think you have all the pieces, but the reality is we know very little about how others truly feel and when you have a lot going on and pulling you in different directions, its hard to know it yourself.
continued below the cut, spoiler free.
taichi and kohei are busy adults. between work/school, family and personal health, they dont have a lot of free time. many people dont have ways to contact friends they made in school because usually, you just see each other and dont think about exchanging contact information until later.
exchanging contact information is a bigger step to take in japan compared to places like the us. taichi uses a flip phone until hes pushed to get a smartphone after it breaks. data plans are expensive and many are selective about when and how they use them, and chatting apps like line are usually the main form of communication method. many people in the us dont like to give out their number or social media (which is also a feature of line) to people they know, like coworkers or classmates.
theres some pretty big assumptions about japanese culture and what its like to be a young adult by fans watching the drama that, in my opinion, just arent realistic. you're thinking like a bl fan and not like what people actually do in real life.
i hear the sunspot is a story about navigating the awkward, the hardships, fumbling and coming to terms with the things we may not like about ourselves. this isnt just about being disabled. able bodied, fully healthy people have things they dont like, push off and ignore. we see this in taichi, and how he continues to push that hes happy, nothing is wrong, he's just a big goofball and doesn't have anything below the surface and a lot of you have fallen for it.
relationships rarely go "we met, we fell in love, and now we are together and everything is perfect with only mild and entertaining drama." in fact id say they almost never do. people get scared to get close to other people, people dont think about if their feelings are romantic love or not when theyve never considered they might be gay. people get busy and distract themselves from addressing the things theyre not ready to look at and understand. all of these things happen much more often and often subconsciously, too.
people are mean and bullheaded when they feel like their comfort zone is threatened. people *run* when they feel like their status quo might change and they dont know what that will look like.
its easy to say someone is being ridiculous when you dont have their full story or dont stop to consider their circumstances. will it be different from how you'd react? absolutely. you lived a different life and had different experiences shape who you are.
but its equally as ridiculous to assume you know exactly how you'd react better than someone in their situation. no one is perfect, and definitely not 20 something year olds figuring out how to be adults after tough moments completely changed their childhoods. your early 20s, especially, is about thinking youre an adult and realizing just how little you know about adulthood. its easy to look back on when i was taichi and kohei's ages and say "oh there is a /lot/ that i fucked up with and couldve done better".
i hear the sunspot is about being human. the mistakes, the drama, the pain and the laughter. it happens to also have a gay love story but its not written to *be* a gay love story or even to be any love story in the first place.
if youre not willing to wait, and consider all the troubles that come before and during their relationship, this is not the story for you. save yourself the time, its got a long way to go. maybe come back in a few more years and see if the story resonates differently.
theyre not going to dive right into a relationship when they still barely know themselves.

it sounds like maybe this show is genuinely just not for you. you dont have to keep watching it if you dont like whats happening.
I Hear The Sunspot - Ep 10
I won't lie if I say that series that create dramas out of nothing, creating problems and scenarios that are far removed from the ordinary lives of millions of people around the world, kind of annoy me 🙃 Kohei and Taichi's relationship is getting more and more weird and unnatural, and they had such a good flow in episodes 1-6. Taichi, who didn't allow any bullshit and openly confronted Kohei and everyone he met, is now unable to communicate. Kohei, who had a tendency to blurt out confessions about his feelings, is now unable to communicate. We also had scenes of them being shy, hiding, which were eventually resolved by contacting/meeting/ even visiting home, and we keep going back to the same point over and over again. Although that's not even it: I complained about the repetition, but now they're back to a point where they never even were. Besides, I really have the impression that the series creates artificial drama, the lack of communication has reached astronomical proportions, they either do not talk to each other AT ALL, and when they meet for a second, when they are not with Maya, they barely talk about important stuff, which was not a problem for them before. They cannot talk, they cannot make an appointment and meet with each other alone like adults, they do not use phones, they cannot get rid of Maya for 5 seconds.
I am generally furious with Kohei that he cannot once and properly put Maya down for her words and behavior towards Taichi, if someone spoke shit like that about someone I like - not even my close friend or crush, and someone like that is supposedly Taichi for Kohei - we would have a serious conversation about it: either stay and shut the fuck up, or leave.
I absolutely hate how Maya described Taichi not knowing him at all and how Kohei immediately thought of it when he saw Taichi making a decision about his life, career and future. What the actual FUCK. Am I the only one who sees Taichi's life as being quite lonely and supporting himself and going to college and working and helping Kohei? And how he has to think about himself and his future because he has no supportive parents and no one will do it for him? How can anyone even think of him as doing it all thoughtlessly or on purpose? Or that he "abandons Kohei" because he is a stupid and cruel person who never cared? ☹
What is the point of this BL at all, since there has been no BL for the last 4 episodes, and the main characters are drifting further and further away from each other with each episode. Why don't they struggle with all these adversities, problems TOGETHER. What is the point of all this, since there is no "togetherness" in it! 🤷♀️🤷♀️
I just... I just love Kohei so much and he seems very lonely to me now. I started shipping him with Chiba-kun ngl, with whom he currently has the most chemistry and scenes lmao
On the one hand, it's not so good that the grandfather isn't more helpful and advising on the young man's important life decisions, on the other hand, the fact that he doesn't make a drama out of these decisions is a big relief for him 😊 Even if Taichi makes a bad decision, he'll have a place to go back to and he'll have the support of his grandfather, who won't make him feel bad about it or say "I told you so". Taichi is still young, he can do whatever he wants, he can go back to college someday, these are no longer the times when people had to make the most important life decisions before the age of 25, which were also irreversible. I think it was a good scene.
But what's worst about all this is that the series got itself tangled up in its own plot, because we don't have a single hint since ep 6 that Taichi is responding to Kohei's feelings, so this whole drama makes no sense. Since they have nothing in common romantically, if they want, they can meet up after work/school (although they haven't managed to do that yet lol) as friends, write to each other (also something they can't do) and live their own lives. Kohei can meet up with Maya since he prefers her company anyway, and Taichi can pursue his career. After all - there is no BL in this BL, so why the drama?
This show has become such a mess. But it would still be a "managable" mess if Kohei and Taichi had more than one scene per episode where something actually happened between them. And we didn't even have the aftermath of the famous "what if I didn't hate it". Like it never happened...

i totally understand this criticism and especially in the scope of the show only covering 2 volumes instead of the wider story, its frustrating to see.
but! this kind of thing also happens in real life relationship development! people get scared as they grow closer to someone or people get busy and grow distant for a bit, and i hear the sunspot is focused on being a story about human connection and growth rather than a 100% focused romance. i deeply recommend checking out the manga so you can see how things progress after the drama ends!
Look I genuinely don’t care if this is a bl or not. I don’t care if Taichi and Kohei date in the end; it doesn’t matter to me and it doesn’t matter much within the show’s themes.
What I do care about is that the first half of the show was about growth and connection. I thought they would continue to grow together but they didn’t. It’s like the spent the second half becoming strangers.
I love them. But that makes me sad.

all the maya hate from the live drama is hurting me 😭
she has a lot more nuance than we originally are let on to see and youre not supposed to like her at first but going straight to hating her at her introduction is excessive.
its obvious how many people hating her havent read the original manga and its sad to see all this hate in the main tag.
this is a slower burn series and the relationships ebb and flow. theres intentional moments of distance and misunderstanding. all of the characters we see are flawed in one way or another.
i can also tell many people reacting are expecting her to get in the way of the bl and have never had anyone use their disability to act like a savior. there is a level of solidarity between disabled individuals that someone ablebodied will never understand and while her behaviors arent right i can empathize with the intention behind them.
#i thought we all knew not to put character hate in the main tags thesedays#she is not an evil woman#she is flawed#more visibly flawed than other characters#but flawed#shes not going to cock block the gay#shes trying to protect someone important to her#yes its done wrong but she is not an evil person for it#i hear the sunspot#hidamari ga kikoeru#catboy speaks

HIIII :3 ITS ME... the 🐓!!!!!!!!
So we've had brainror abt reader turning into a cat but what about Dottore?? and his segments?
Reader walks in one day to see a big blue puff cloud and when it disapears theres a bunch of blue cats roaming around and meowing (As soon as they see reader its on sight and they WILL be begging for affection)
Reader sitting on a counch while a bunch of cats surround and suffocate them (it reminds them of Foxttore and the pufflings)
I NEED TO BE SURROUDNED BY A BUNCH OF CATTORES NOWWW Auauuuug
all the cats BITING reader affectionately (they are so MEAN even though reader is so nice to them 😔) AND OMGGG ZANDY AS A TINY LIL KITTEN AUUUUGGG MY HEART IM EXPLODING. ZANDY KITTY 3 SAUCES TALL!!!!!!! his lil meows..... 😭😭
I am ill..... I need doctor..... - 🐓
DOTTOCATS!!! CATTORES!!! <3 It would be the result of a failed experiment of course, just like all the other mishaps that always happen in the lab. Only that this is a lot worse than all the other ones. For them, at least. For you, you could die happily, surrounded by all of this kitty cuteness. Cattores are not amused by your lack of seriousness at the situation. No, they are not cute. Wait, is that a Kamera you have? Don't you dare.
Unfortunately for them, despite all the words they try to spew out, it only comes out as 'meow meow, meow meow meow! meow!' much to their dismay. You don't take their kitty anger too seriously, until they quickly learn how to utilize their new body (biting and repeatedly clawing your leg for attention). (Funnily enough somehow the masks shrunk down to the same size too?)
You will have the tall task of creating the cure to turn them back to normal humans but it won't be too much of a problem, they already have the ingredients in their mouth and are impatiently waiting for you to hurry up. You take your sweet time and take lots of breaks petting Zandy kitty, the only one who doesn't bite you and always brushes against your leg.
Just please cancel that meeting he has with Pantalone today. Please. And then be prepared for when he turns back. At least a cat his biting power isn't that much. As a human, however, well, you already know how that goes. (Isn't he much better to cuddle like this, Dottore asks, as you are trapped for a long time in his arms.)
#smooches talks#🐓 anon#dottore love notes <3#i still need to write that dottore catboy fic... sigh#i still love the way u speak “ZANDY KITTY 3 SAUCES TALL!!!!!!!” makes me laugh too hard#cradling him very gently... ouh#WAIT I JUST REALIZED UR PROBABLY REFERENCING THAT MEME OF THE KITTEN NEXT TO THE SAUCES#HELPPPP READER WOULD!!#meanwhile omega and prime kitty is like... idk a lot more

i agree the drama adaption did not do a good job of adapting her and i think they leaned too hard into exaggerating her emotions but i have also seen takes that are mad at her because shes a girl getting in between the main couple. i dont see some of the takes ive seen between twitter and tumblr when its a boy who does the same things.
the manga does a really good job with showing her as someone who is flawed as the rest of us and its disappointing the direction the drama seems to be taking with her
I was intrigued by the defense of Maya from people who read the manga, I also saw a screenshot of this scene with her fight with Taichi and I want to say as someone who doesn't know the manga, only the series: I feel like none of this scene from the manga was translated into the scene in the series except the words. The vibe, the atmosphere, they are completely different.
I won't go into detail about all the differences, I'll write about one, the main one, which I think explains everything:
Maya from the manga is agitated and you can see that she is angry on Kohei's behalf, but you can see some kind of… chivalry in her, as if she sincerely believes that she is defending Kohei, her attack is mean but also kind of "argumentative", as if she wanted Taichi to understand what she thinks he is doing wrong
Maya from the series behaves as if it was all about attacking Taichi and everything is laced with some kind of malice and unnecessary rudeness, her attack is aimed at insulting and belittling Taichi, to drive him away from Kohei
So it is quite possible that it is simply… the drama's fault and how they decided to show this character, without nuances, just as an ordinary bitch. Or maybe the same scenes just have a different tone on paper and different in a real life.
I may also be wrong about the vibe of this scene in both editions, because I haven't read the manga and I've seen comments from readers that they didn't like Maya in the manga and don't like her in the series. So idk, I'm just trying to understand what is going on in this series right now 😅
I also want to say that the fact that it's a girl doesn't matter at all, quite the opposite, there is general anger in the BL fandom that the girl has been made "the bad one" again, we're all tired of it, besides, it's already 2024, girls don't have to have to break up relationships and they don't have to be mean.
Overall, I have the impression that something went wrong with this character and in this episode.... It's weird when the fandom of a romantic series is on fire… with anger and hatred 😭
