Joke being someone that the neighborhood is slowly coming to trust more and more, I don’t know if I can fully articulate how much this means to me Joke even if he can’t really see it yet.

We all know Joke’s dream is to have a home, to belong. And after Ep7 it was pretty thoroughly crushed, EXCEPT IT WASNT!

In Joke’s eyes after Ep7 he had nothing. Grandma in hospital, Dad disowning him, Jack rejecting him. But we see IN Ep7 that isn’t true with how Tattoo, Arun, Hoy and even Hoy’s Mom welcome him in with open arms.

In this episode we see even MORE of it

His brother (although clearly misguided) seems to harbor only good feelings about Joke and encourages him to come around more, Hoy’s Mom immediately asks Joke for help when she can’t find Jack and trusts him. Grandma, (OUR MVP OF HELPING JOKE) constantly reassures him this episode. Hell even the owner of the bar has no bad things to say about Joke having to take some time off work (which is a wild concept in food industry imo)

Joke feels abandoned and alone, but even thought he can’t see the care others have for him it’s still there! It isn’t even misplaced gratitude, the neighborhood doesn’t know he’s the one who returned their items. They genuinely just care for Joke who cares about the area and the people in it.

I know the beginning of ep 11 is going to be angsty, everyone is alone now vibes, but I need them to fucking rally and specifically for Jack to process his feelings and see what Joke was trying to do.

Joke is always going to take the blame, he's always going to sacrifice himself and he won't even think of it that way. Through this whole series we've seen Joke really see Jack, understand him: notice things like his relationship with his previous coach, his desire to save everyone and his habit of trying to do everything on his own. I need Jack to return the favor.

Jack has to see how Joke was trying to help him, how he both did not consider these consequences from stealing the ring (which like, i still think the fact that this ring is literal crime magic is fucking stupid, but w.e) and also accepted the consequences of stealing again because he thought he would be the only one hurt by it.

In the last episode and again in this one Joke flippantly agrees to do things that could get him killed, he sees his death as negligible. I need Jack to notice, to tell Joke that his life matters, that he doesn't have to carry the blame for every single thing, that it's ok, and that he was just trying to help and that he understands.

Okay I think this has already been done, but I never saw anyone talk about this. Why do you think Polites' tune when he sings you can relax my friend, we can tell you're getting nervous in get in the water is different from the usual way he sings it? I suppose it could be because Odysseus simply forgot over the years and changes parts of it, which, angsty, i'm not crying you are. OR it's because Odysseus himself has changed as a person and he views those words differently, which is less likely. Or maybe, Polites sound sadder, mournful and resigned, because those words do not have the intended effect on Odysseus anymore. Idk, but it's interesting.

it's very funny to me that tumblr of all places has so much heat for the worst aspects of k tanaka's character beats considering that they started out as nearly a direct parody of the tumblr sjw. and as much as i love evan, i can't help but see the irony as well that brennan created a character who, in universe, is the object of a lot of misplaced adoration, specifically referencing kylo ren who had this website in a chokehold, only for evan to become one of tumblr's sad boys even when k has apparently addressed this and grown past it. there's lots of other things that k has not dealt with that we can talk about, but ALSO maybe it would be a good idea to turn a lens on evan considering that the archetype of someone resisting violent conditioning is something else that popped up in this episode that is extremely fucking pertinent irl right now. i've called it 'magical' nationalism before because the allegory is white supremacy and imperialism, right? if we had gotten the shit with the militia in iowa in mismag 1 it would be even more evident. even if evan himself is struggling with something that displays similarities with psychosis or autism, it's not a one-to-one parallel. there is crucial context being overlooked in favor of woobifying him and that's just... chef's kiss. gods bless.
