Phryne Fisher, Enneagram Seven with an Eight-Wing: The Realist & Jack Robinson, Enneagram One with a Two-Wing: The Advocate
Enneagram Ones and Sevens have a particular complementary and reciprocal relationship. [...] Sevens offer Ones a sense of excitement and life as a source of pleasure and enjoyment. Ones offer Sevens a sense of purpose and idealism, as well as direction and the feeling that life is noble and meaningful. Sevens keep Ones' spirits up, refreshing their idealism while preventing the relationship from becoming too heavy. Ones help steady Sevens, keeping them working systematically and consistently toward goals. Sevens appreciate the One's consistency and reliability and are glad to have someone who can attend to details. These two types can be highly supportive of each other as long as their ultimate values are congruent and as long as they are both working for the same fundamental things in life. This tends to be a stimulating relationship for both—they stretch each other and are fascinated and challenged by their differences. — What Each Type Brings to the Relationship

i’m watching m*a*s*h on hulu (because i am too lazy to dig out my dvds and switch them out after i finish each disc lmao) and there’s a campaign ad about how china is stealing manufacturing jobs and the dems are evil for not caring about those jobs
and i just need to rant real quick
manufacturing jobs are being SENT to china by their companies because the price of labor is hella cheaper than it is in the states. the reason companies choose to send those jobs to china for the cheaper labor is because they can sell their product hella cheaper. they need to sell the product cheap because average americans want cheaper prices overwhelmingly because THEY CAN’T AFFORD HIGHER PRICES
BECAUSE THEY AREN’T PAID LIVING WAGES
and underscoring all of that, CEOs and upper management are looking for the lowest cost of manufacture a product for the highest possible mark up that will still appeal to american buyers so that they can make so much money they literally couldn’t spend it all in a lifetime
so MAYBE china “stealing” manufacturing jobs isn’t what we should be worrying about here.............
okay. i feel better now.

Daily Blog #15: August 22, 2021
Dollar Tree is honestly pretty fucking awesome 👌👌👌
I set my alarm for like 6:25 this morning, but it took 6 minutes for the "Horsin' Around" theme song instrumental to wake me up. I was pretty tired lol. I just dismissed it and went back to sleep.
I only went back to sleep because I knew I had another alarm set for 7:00. That got me up.
I should mention that this was still in the RV over an hour away from the house.
After I got up, I went to go get a shower, and did so successfully.
Unfortunately, I had forgotten my brush this time and had to do it afterwards after my hair had a bit of time to dry, which did make it a little more difficult lol.
I got dressed and grabbed my stuff, putting it into my car.
I made it a point to see and say "see you later" to my grandparents before I left for the flea market.
My dad insisted that I stayed to say goodbye to my mom, so I left.
I did NOT have cell service up there, as was mentioned in my previous 2 blogs of which I could only post today, so finding my way was a tiny bit difficult until I got some service to ask Google to take me to "...".
It worked and I got there.
On my drive, I listened to 1 by Simple Kid, a CD I had previously purchased at a Dollar Tree location.
I got a call from the guy at the flea market saying that I had some people there waiting for me. He asked how far away I was, to which I said "about 10 minutes." Ironically, that call made me miss my exit, as Google couldn't talk during the call, and added about 3 minutes to my arrival time lmao.
I did sell the Xbox that he said someone was interested in. I got $40 for it. I spent 27¢ on it. Pretty good return if you ask me.
I couldn't sell it with anything other than a power cord because the controller and AV cables I had been using to play it there were for my personal console. I'm just glad I can actually hook my Xbox up and stop having to drag them to the flea market along with a small library of games.
Not too long after I sold the Xbox, someone came in and asked if I wanted to see some electronics he had in his car. I went out with him. It was a pair of 3ft speakers and a Pioneer audio system with dual cassette decks (although neither of them works) and a 25 Disc CD-changer, as well as the standard AM/FM tuner. Additionally, there was a Fisher amplifier and AM/FM tuner as well as a Fisher Direct Drive turntable. He said he wanted $60 for em, but before that he casually, and probably accidentally, dropped that he was just gonna take em to the thrift store.
Big mistake.
I got em for $35 lmao. THERE GOES MOST OF MY PROFIT.
Oh well.
I tested everything. As I mentioned, the cassette decks don't work, but everything else does apart from the turntable needing a new stylus.
I posted some new photos of the shop to Facebook, and someone soon DMed me about a stereo system.
I priced everything, and it turns out I have about $300 worth of equipment from that deal, the Fisher amp and tuner being worth about $150.
The buyer will hopefully show up next weekend, for he wants to buy the Fisher stuff ($185 with the turntable), the 3ft speakers, an 8-track deck, and a Kenwood deck we've had for a week or two.
The speakers are listed for $50 (and are worth around $100-150), the Kenwood Deck for $50 as well, and the 8-track for $35. That makes it about $320 in equipment. Since he's buying so much, I'll knock it down to $270 and essentially give him the speakers or cassette deck for free lol.
Apart from that stuff, not much happened at the flea market. I sold some records, cassettes, CDs and I think 2 DVDs. One person bought a VHS tape? That money was the other guy's though. Oh well xD.
I can't say that I didn't miss my wonderful partner while on the trip. I actually brought along the stuffed animal they gave me (who's name is Greg) and snuggled with him both nights.
I was very happy to hear from them UwU.
They let me rant and I let them rant.
I honestly give them too much responsibility over me xD. I'm like, "Okay, I'm gonna do this. HOLD ME TO IT."
I know I can't hold myself to anything I personally say (this blog being the only exception apparently), but I listen to them pretty well I think 🤔. If they tell me, "No, you don't need that VCR," so long as it's not some weird specialty thing, like a worldwide VCR 🥵, I'll be like "Yeah, you rite bro."
I love you man xD. You control my craziness pretty well. I'm so thankful for you UwU.
#relationshipgoals
So part way through the flea market day, I went over to Dollar Tree to buy some snack, but ended up looking through the CDs to see if there was anything good. I took photos of about 18 CDs and flipped through them online for the remainder of the flea market day.
I deleted the photos of the ones I didn't want and kept those that I liked. Surprisingly, I ended up buying 13 CDs there, but not before dropping them on the floor like the dumbass I am.
Also, sorry for all the nerd shit I spilled on your lap earlier. No one cares about amps and tuners xD.
I'M LISTENING TO ONE OF THE DOLLAR TREE CDS RIGHT NOW THO.
I already transferred over to my online library on iBroadcast and put the disc into my CD changer, which is now holding 164 CDs.
Its max capacity is 300 discs 🥵
WHY AM I NERD
Oh well
I like being a nerd gurl
Also maybe a technosexual 👀
I get really excited over some electronics. Like. REALLY excited.
Some editing VCRs are like "Holy shit that is SEXY. Look at those goddamn VU meters 🥵. And hhhh there are like 7 inputs on this thing and individual controls for left and right audio gain, not to mention Hi-Fi S-VHS recording. Hhhhhhhhhhh please gimme 😭. Why are you so expensive?"
I uh, mean, uh, *cough* look, pretty lights.
Oh yeah, I was gonna say the album I was listening to xD. MAN I GOT SIDETRACKED.
It's 37 Everywhere by Punchline. Def give it a listen; it's pretty heccin good.
Another notable album I picked up was Page One by Steven Page. I very much like the first track, "A New Shore." It's quite catchy and he has a great voice imo.
Also at dollar tree, I bought a regular bag of Fieras and 2 bags of Fieras Sticks, which were marked down to 75¢/bag because they're expiring soon.
I honestly like the generic Dollar Tree version of Takis more than actual Takis. They're a lot more flavorful when it comes to the lime, but also hotter at the same time.
Don't get the hot nacho ones tho. Hot nacho? More like hot pile of shit.
HAH
Goteem.
They're not that good xD.
THE REGULAR ONES ARE FIRE THO
"How do you do fellow kids?"
I got home and started working on putting the CDs onto my computer, and then onto iBroadcast, but not without first adding The Music Man to my digital library, something I had neglected for a month or two. The CD had just been sitting there lol.
I also switched my digital file for "The Black Parade" to that of the uncensored CD, which I had purchased before I event started working over 2 months ago.
MAN I'M LAZY
I eventually get around to shit tho lol. I guess it's just a matter of priority.
What usually takes priority is digging through everything to find something that I forgot about but then remembered, making a mess in the process that I would then have to clean up, at least partially.
I think the album just ended. I've been writing for a while xD. I'ma start "I Made You Something" by The Island of the Misfit Toys.
I'll tell you where that album came from in a minute.
In the meantime, where was I?
I kinda lost my train of thought despite reading up to see where I was. Oh well. On I go.
I ate dinner and kept working on those CDs, eventually putting my clothes from the week into the washer.
I FORGOT TO PUT MY SHAPING UNDERWEAR IN. FUCKING HELL MAN.
I wanted to wash em for this week 😭
No tight pants for Leonna I guess qwq.
Meanwhile, the box of my CD album cases is overflowing. I need another box.
I keep all of the album artworks in a big CD folder. That's almost full.
I wanna fill my entire CD changer. That's one of my big goals in life. Idk why, but I just wanna legitimately fill the entire thing.
My clothes are in the dryer now. I don't think I have the time (or energy) to fold them tonight. I'll leave that for tomorrow morning before work.
And God. Fucking. Damnit. I start school again on Wednesday. NOT looking forward to that, and neither are my 2 coworkers. We already have low enough staff, but only the two of them working is gonna be a pain in the ass.
I'll still work Saturdays.
I need to contact my guidance counselor to get out of the gym class I signed up for. I scheduled this shit before I found out I was trans, and I don't wanna deal with the fucking locker room situation 🙄 I have far more important matters.
Okay so anyway, the album I'm listening to came from a cassette. I bought this cassette a few months ago at the flea market along with a few others. The reason I bought them? They were all newer cassette releases from the 2010's, and they're all actually pretty good music from very indie bands.
Currently getting mad at iBroadcast's compression algorithm. It's unnaturally fucking anything over -10db up. Oh well, there's not really anything I can do about it.
I have like 13GB of music on my phone btw. That's about 3.5k songs on 268 albums.
I'm kind of an audiophile, but I'm too cheap to pay for a lossless service. Oh well.
They do actually have a lossless service on iBroadcast, but once again, too cheap.
Someone just sent me a friend request who legitimately posted that BLM and the democratic party are hate groups.
BLOCK.
Goodbye ho.
I don't get that. They call the democratic party a hate group when they hate people like me, and I, being more of a democrat although not fully because the 2-party system is fucked, think nothing more of them than they're very wrong about certain things, especially, as shown, that black people, as well as asian, Indian, native, and people of all ethnicities and backgrounds, are not equal to white people.
Yeh.
Totally.
You go buddy.
Anyway, yeah, I can, and do, convert music and video from analog formats to digital files in order for me to archive and listen to whenever and wherever I please. I've actually made a bit of a business out of it, but I don't get too much work from it. At least I'm not overloading myself xD.
I honestly have so much more to say, but I should probably go to sleep soon.
A few final shoutouts to the following people and companies:
-Dollar Tree
-Steven Page
-Broken World Media
-The Island of Misfit Toys
-Simple Kid
-Punchline
-My incredible partner QwQ I love you so much. Thanks for being the best all the time. I hope I can give you the best life ever.
Anyway I suppose this is goodnight. Lmk if you want a full list of the CDs I bought today! I'll link that song by Steven Page here.
And here's a good song from Simple Kid
I really like music lol. Enjoy these pieces.
Anyway, goodnight lol.
Lots of love,
-Leonna.

I’m Not Grumpy
A/N: This was written for @justkending’s 1000 follower challenge. Prompts in bold below.
Could be read as either platonic relationship or Dean x reader. Third person POV.
Word count: 930
~~~~~~~~
Dean shuffled his bare feet across the cool tile as he headed to the kitchen. He lazily rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand before lifting the full pot of coffee. While he poured, he began to debate his breakfast options. The sound of unfamiliar voices from down the hall halted his thoughts.
He quickly followed the sound to its source: the television in the Dean Cave. He glanced around the room, his eyes landing on the nearly-hidden form buried in blankets on the couch. “You’re up super early.”
She sniffled and coughed. “Not really. Been here all night. Dozed some, but I didn’t really sleep.”
“Nightmares, or—?” He moved to stand beside the arm of the couch where her head rested.
“I almost wish that was why. Sounds better than this,” she whined. “No. I caught your cold. I’m so congested. If I lie flat, I can’t breathe, and I can’t really get comfortable any other way.”
Dean gently placed the back of his hand on her forehead. “How many fingers and I holding up?”
“None. I’m sick, not concussed,” she deadpanned.
“Hey, around here, it never hurts to check.” He looked around the room and saw nothing but discarded tissues littering the table and floor. “Have you taken anything or even drank any water?”
She slowly and timidly shook her head. “I didn’t think it was that bad at first. And then when I decided I should take something, I stood up and got dizzy. I haven’t moved since.”
He rolled his eyes dramatically. “Why didn’t you call me or Sam?”
“You were both sleeping.”
“So? You need us, you call. Always,” he said. She could hear his concern overpowering his frustration. “I’ll be right back.”
He walked back into the room five minutes later. He was carrying a tray full of cold meds, bottles of water, crackers, and his mug of coffee. He set the tray on the table and handed her one of the bottles. “Drink,” he ordered.
“Yes, sir,” she mocked as she twisted off the cap. “Ugh, tissue. Please?” She sneezed into it as soon as he passed one over.
“Alright, Sneezy, take this.” He handed her cough syrup.
“It’s, like, 7 am… Why are you giving me NyQuil?”
“Because you need sleep and it’ll help. Here, take this too.” He gave her a decongestant pill. “Need anything else?”
She thought for a moment. “Anything?”
“Whatever you need.” He eyed her suspiciously.
“I’ll settle for a cuddle, if you’re offering.” She smiled then flashed him her best puppy eyes. “And can we watch Snow White?”
He rolled his eyes. “Seriously? You know there are good movies we could watch.”
“Snow White is a good movie! And it’s your fault for calling me Sneezy, which made me think of it.”
“Fine. Only because you don’t feel good.” She rolled onto her side and scooted against the back of the couch while he put in the DVD. He moved some of the blankets around on the couch before laying down carefully. As he got comfortable, he wrapped his arm around her shoulder. She curled into his side and rested her head on his chest.
A few minutes into the movie, Dean snorted as the wicked witch told the huntsman to bring back Snow White’s heart. “Is she just a lazy werewolf that doesn’t do her own killing?”
She couldn’t help but laugh. “Are you gonna try to tell me the dwarfs are leprechauns, too?”
“No, they’d be fairies. Leprechauns are fairies, duh.”
She guffawed, causing her to cough harshly before settling back against Dean. She watched as all the animals gathered in the forest. “Look how cute that baby bluebird is! Can we get a bird?”
He raised an eyebrow at her. “Is that the fever talking? We’re not home enough to have pets.”
She stifled a yawn as she pouted. “Fine.”
She felt her eyelids get heavy and began to doze in and out of sleep. She woke just enough to mumble along with the dwarfs, “Dig, dig, dig.”
Dean smiled and ran his hand up and down her back gently. “You’re supposed to be falling asleep, not singing along.”
“Can’t help it. It’s catchy.” She shrugged and sang again as they started into, “Hi-ho, hi-ho, it’s home from work we go.”
Moments later, as he watched the dwarfs arrive at the occupied cottage, Dean reiterated, “See! They think there’s a monster in the house. I’m telling you, the witch is a werewolf.”
“Well, if they are hunting monsters, they need quieter shoes!” she said. A few minutes later, she pointed towards the screen where Grumpy had appeared. “Hey, look, it's you.”
He scowled. “I’m not Grumpy!”
“I think you just made the same face. Plus, he is really just a big softie. And she even makes a pie just for him later.”
“If you say so. Will you try and get some sleep now, please?”
She took a deep, relaxing breath and closed her eyes. Dean softly rubbed her back and ran his fingers through her hair. He let himself relax as well once he heard soft snores coming from her congested sinuses.
Sam wandered into the room about half an hour later. He found her and Dean sound asleep on the couch while the dwarfs snored on the TV. He chuckled as he pulled out his phone and took a quick video of the scene he’d stumbled into.
He gently pulled one of the blankets up over her shoulders before heading back to the library, leaving the two of them to their nap.
Things That Get You Through the Day
WinterIron, T, 1k, just neighbor boys trying to get through the day
For the @buckybarnesbingo fluffathon event! Day 6 Prompts: Cutie, Chocolate
(Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5)
-
Bucky has a pretty terrible day at work. The rain has made just about everyone cranky, doubly so for the customers. He gets bitched at by his boss, the lazy assholes he works with, and every other person he talks too, and by the time his lunch break rolls around he’s about ready to bite someone’s head off himself.
The only consolation is that at least the rain is finally letting up, now more of a light drizzle than anything, and maybe it’ll even be done by the time he has to walk home. And that he has a new text from Tony. He had almost forgotten about scribbling his number on a scrap of paper and shoving it into Tony’s pocket before they left his apartment earlier. There’s no way the text is from anyone else, though, and Bucky feels an actual smile spread across his face for the first time in hours.
‘Finally made it back into my own apartment! This is why I’m not allowed to have a pet. At least I didn’t leave the oven on or anything. This time.’
Bucky grins wider, shakes his head a little and suddenly doesn’t mind that his lunch is a bland vending machine sandwich. ‘I find the phrase “this time” highly disturbing. What have you done.’
‘Don’t worry about it’ Tony texts him back almost instantly. ‘More importantly, I see you survived your swim to work.’
‘I did not. I’m texting you now from my watery grave’ Bucky replies and likes to imagine he can actually see Tony’s smile. ‘But the nice old lady who comes by every Thursday called me a cutie and gave me a cough drop, so that’s something’
‘You ARE a cutie’ Tony replies, and then while Bucky is still choking on his bite of food adds ‘gotta go help Ms Richmond set up her new computer, she’s paying me in leftover spaghetti. If you’re lucky I might even save you some. Don’t forget about tonight, see you when you get home!’
‘I won’t forget’ Bucky promises, glad thatTony can’t see the flush on his face or his wide, dopey grin.
He gets home to find Tony sitting on his doorstep again. At least it’s the door to Bucky’s actual apartment, and Tony isn’t sitting outside the building in the cold.
“People are gonna start thinking you’re a stray who followed me home,” Bucky says in greeting, trying and failing to fight down his smile.
“I basically am,” Tony says happily, hopping to his feet. For a split second Bucky thinks Tony is going to throw himself at Bucky or at the very least hug him, but then Tony kind of freezes, hesitating, finally smiles nervously and says “hey, welcome home.”
“Thanks,” Bucky says, smiling back and he’s already spoiled, wants Tony here to greet him everyday. There’s a bag still sitting beside the door, and Bucky kind of wants to ask if Tony is planning on setting up camp, but he's also terrified of finally saying the wrong thing and chasing Tony off.
Luckily he doesn’t have to agonize for long, because Tony turns around and scoops up the bag, pulling out a giant Tupperware container and saying “spaghetti! I already ate some, it’s amazing, you’re lucky I saved you any, honestly.”
“So generous,” Bucky says, laughing softly, and he’s hungry enough that he really doesn’t care how it tastes as long as it’s edible. And as long as Tony sticks around to eat it with him.
“Also,” Tony continues, shoving the spaghetti away to dig through the bag again, “I had to stop by the corner store earlier, so I got you this!” Tony proudly produces a large chocolate bar, grinning wider when Bucky makes excited grabby hands at him. “Can’t let sweet old ladies show me up,” he adds with a wink, and Bucky nearly fumbles in the proceeds of opening his candy bar.
It’s dark chocolate, which is Bucky’s favorite, and he’s not sure if Tony actually knows that or if it’s just a lucky guess, but either way Bucky’s chest feels tight and warm. “This is way better than an old, lint-covered cough drop,” he assures Tony around a mouthful of chocolate, and Tony smiles wider. Then Bucky notices a suspiciously unmarked DVD case sticking out of the bag. “Hey, can I see that?” He asks, as innocently as he possibly can.
Tony almost hands the case over, but then his eyes narrow and he pulls the entire bag close to his chest again. “You’re going to throw it, aren't you?” He demands, “you think if you throw my movie you’ll get out of watching it.”
“No...” Bucky says slowly, grinning, and then laughs when Tony starts huffing and shoving him into the door before Bucky even gets a chance to unlock it.
Uhm??????? Unacceptable?? Please tell me more about your OCs in that last art? I demand it? I want a full report on my desk before morning? Cite your sources please?
Oh no,, you’re asking,,, about my own faves,,, sorry to everyone, but I guess im never going to shut up ever now. (i already don’t shut up ever, what have u done, im now going to speak so much that society will collapse AT LEAST)
But for real. I enjoy pretending I don’t have faves, I love all my kids the same, buT WE ALL KNO THAT’S A LIE, those two my fave bitches (they snatched that title from the last two faves, rip to them, and they also snatched, n I must really make that clear, the title of “the bitches with the most AUs from the previous previous faves. Their power.)
SO. Get ready for a ride, table of content: them, their respective character, their story, and the pLETHORA OF ALTERNATE STORIES I GAVE THEM because i must yell about all the versions of my kids i have (non-exhaustive cause its that serious bro, but ill take extra time for the universe depicted in that art just for u bby). (tbh if clamp is allowed to sprinkle their fave gays in all their universes so am i, except they aint secondary characters there, every story is just theirs. love that concept.)(itll be so long you’re getting a whole novel even if i have to post it in two posts)
So~ Em twos. Dari n Wei-wei as I call em, or Dumbass n Egg if you wanna get friendly.
They’re my proudest instance of “oops i made a squad of characters, and two of them just accidentally were so perfectly compatible and complementary oh no I guess they’re in love now.” And then they became my favourite. Cause I guess their potential was too much (jk its bc they hot)
cuties.
I spent ten minutes wondering which to introduce first cause dang son, I want to talk bout them both so much shefjgfdg
First, as I technically designed him first (like ten minutes before the other), my man weiwei. if u ever saw my art its impossible that you havent seen him at least once. cause i’m legit always drawing him. cause im in love bro.
Demonstration : here are my computer scribbled weiweis of 2020 so far (with a few daris there n there they’re a package deal), that i could find, and they do not include all the paper sketches that i’m too lazy to take pics of. (i just been drawing him with so much hair these days that’s illegal, his brand is baldness)
But anyway, he’s CHEN Chia-Wei, he’s 21, he’s Taiwanese n I love him. Two very important facets of his character when you meet him: he doesn’t talk, and is absolutely, in every single dimension, built to make you fall head over heels for him.
He’s (in the “canon” storyline if i may call it that since it’s def not my most developed one but oh well) an art student, mostly paints but is also great at photography and videography (his vibe is busy hectic pieces with strong bold colours, lots of harsh edges, and very people focused).
Aside from that, he’s also super into fashion, and because he’s part of the rich boy squad (the “im broke so im giving half my characters wealth in compensation) he Can and Does exhibit some quite funky fits when he feels like it. (maybe a reason I draw him a lot, since my fave thing is pretty boys in weird ass clothes)(and then i also draw him in just casual shit cuz tittiful men in plain white tees you know. there’s just something about it.)
Small compilation of outfits. ft me and my band handwriting roasting outfits that id also kill to own but ok u know.
He digs music. (i make playlists for my OCs and i gotta say, his is the best one, i spent so many hours researching it, “arranging” it etc n its still a work in progress but dude. she got many moods my fave part is when it suddenly turns into so many cheesy ballads also she’s enormous cause im as wordy in playlists as I am in writing.) listens to a lot, n also he can play piano n guitar. cause you know. heartthrobs got to win your heart with a song (and if he’s alone he can even mumble some songs, who knows maybe even sing em softly, definitly a sight to stumble on accidentally). Big main artists that have his vibes are Hello Nico, No Party for Cao Dong, n Circa Waves’s “what’s it like over there” album.
He does a lot of sports. He ain’t fit through magic, rip to him. He’s got a serious routine, and it’s a time he likes to use alone, cause nothing like running at the break of dawn, alone with your thoughts, which you can just easily forget through the exhaustion of a workout session afterwards.
he also eats. A lot. Food is just good, bro. (the canon story is def happening some place europe aka his biggest struggle is how expensive food is here. outrageous.)
He secretly loves super cheesy movies. the dramatic romcoms??? the cute shows that are just so cute and worriless?? anything involving soulmates??? yeh dude. he watches it, he reads it, he listens to it, and he may cry about it, but no one will know. That’s the one true guilty pleasure. (and he definitly has a collection of romance dvds, books n manhuas in his old room back at the family home. where no one can see it. perks of studying abroad. no one can see ur hoarding of material that clashes your image. “yes i watch edgy experimental things haha yes i love those smart people movies of course wow the philosophy…” and then immediatly goes to watch the trashiest predictable but oh so sweet dramas all night)
While he doesn’t speak (as in with the mouth) he can communicate in a bunch of language, due to having moved around quite a bit. On top of his native mandarin and hokkien, he’s fluent in English, so he can use those to write, and is also fluent in TSL, and pretty good in HKSL (and from that, other close-in-syntax sign languages). So he doesn’t have trouble getting around, but then he is also overall quiet in public (with close friends and over text though, that’s another story, that’s where he gets chattier, and also where you may get more of his true personality). Also, he can speak with his sister. That’s pretty cool bro.
I was going to say he’s a very “hides his true colours under a shell” type of character but you know, for an egg character, that’s pretty ironic. We love poetic cinema.
He presents himself as a very laid back, chill detached dude, going with the flow and all that great stuff, and masterfully mixes just the right doses of mysterious, flirty and calm to just go around vibing. But ain’t that jUST THE MILLENIAL’S ILLNESS, those dANG KIDS, going around, gettin relationships but never intimacy 👏😢 (there’s more to it dont leave)
First of all, before you see the Drama, the Turmoil, the first thing you notice when you really do befriend him is that he’s c h i l d i s h, he gets sulky when things dont go following the plan, he gets whiny n jealous for not getting attention , he gets competitive over stupid challenges, and way too playful if you start teasing, and when he gets flustered too…you think you get cool stoic dude but actually you get a dude who’s reacting to things with way too much intensity, and boi i thought u were gon be mature what’s that why have you been pouting for three days over losing a bet come on- That’s mostly coming up when he interacts with his sister, but the closest you are to him to more of it you get to see.
He’s also an affectionate dude actually. Like physically. As in you’ll get spontaneous hugs. He’s come nap on your shoulder. That’s a perk of befriending him if you ask me.
Also he tries to look so cool, so tough haha. He’s actually a lil sensitiv boi. he gets fluffy, he gets flustered, he heart eyes. you turn around and he’s gazing at ya as if you were the whole universe. he gets a mini crisis for holding hands with his crush. ya know. he’s secretly a softie.
nerd.
Then in the “what he doesn’t show” (my fave part), where you stock all the anxieties, all the trauma… Obviously there’s a lot of anxiety here (selective muteness being a symptom of it, he hides the other ones very well) mostly fear of inadequacy, of abandonement and of loneliness. mmmmmmmaybe that’s why he was v reticent to continue pursuing that one guy he was into when he realised he was just a tad too into him oh no is that some,, like?? some lovey-love?? cant have that im afraid of gettin heartbroken bro. Aint that sad for a someone who’s one true goal is just findin someone to love and to be with forever, the struggles of yearnin for a soulmate when there’s nothing you fear more than getting attached to a person and letting them see you and your flaws.., delicious.
Now tho (because its so alone speaking about a character on their own and i just wanna get to the part where i can speak bout em together and how they bring out bits of each others ya kno, the good kush….), Dari…
He’s pretty, i must say, and got the funniest hair to draw, and comes from the most opposite background to weiwei’s.
Darian Andriev PARVANOV, also 21, comes from the remote Bulgarian countryside, but i still love him (this makes it sound as if i wouldnt normally love someone from the bulgarian countryside. its not what i meant. by default ud remind me of my son so you’d start being liked if u came from the bulgarian countryside) Now for the first instance of “wow, the complementarity”. The first thing i thought making Dari was that he looked too cool, and that he obviously was a dumbass, and mostly that he was physically unable to shut up. (o fuck he’s me)
best picture i could find of him. He’s got the dilemma of “wow he looked so pretty n cool until he opened his mouth”
He’s ALSO an art student (cause they were initially created for the purpose of filling the gap of “i have ocs in every field except the one i sorta know that’s so stupid”), painting major (def vibes differently than weiwei though, he’s doing those soft pretty landscapes n flowers, everything real pretty and peaceful, we got some impressionism nerd in here folks).
He was/is a real country boy, farm family, he helped tend the fields, he worked in plantations for pocket money, he knows how to take care of cattle and chicken and goats and all the cool babies you can take care of, he can tell whether the soil is good or not, he can drive a tractor, and doesnt fear dirt.
but then also he’s kind of a neat freak, he hates getting paint on himself, so the duality of man, dirt ok but paint? disgostin. his spaces are real neat and spotless, he likes cleaning (its relaxing) and does it nearly too often.
his dumbassery comes from lack of common sense and impulsiveness, aside from that he’s actually what you’d call “mad smart”, dude had em good grades, he can memorise pages upon pages of the most trivial information, he has an accumulation of knowledge beyond limits, and is good at problem solving. so he can recite all the words of the F letter of the dictionnary, but would also put a curling iron in his mouth to see if it would curl his tongue. (side note, he does have a problem with heat n fire, most his “oopsie how i wound up hurting myself on acccident” story involve burning -that stove was just too tempting…)
while he doesnt feel very attached to his home country, he does feel strongly for his family. he’d do anything for his mum (and actually does everything to make her proud already, that’s his one main goal), and he’s ready to sacrifice a lot for her (as in, spend years working non-stop a really uncomfortable job so his mother wouldnt have to pay a cent of his expenses even though she said she could by doing some sacrifices herself,and then being ready to come back as soon as needed if anything happened, and potentially drop his career and dream n go back to the farm life to provide for mama)(also he still does hold onto some parts of his home country’s traditions, and does sometimes feel homesick but more in a ‘i left the most beautiful landscapes n the city feels cramped and claustrophobic and i dont know people and i dont feel in the right place cuz im a forreigner with a thicc accent who doesnt master the language of this place and straight up have different body language communicators due to cultural difference oh lord i wanna be home where a nod means no and a head shake is yes i keep misunderstanding everything”)
if you want background noise he’s the perfect pal to call over, he’s just so chatty, he got hours and hours of non stop speech ready for you. you can shut him up once you’re done listening with the offering of food. works everytime.
he’s definitly not shy. neither in terms of talking to people, nor when it comes to making decisions. he’s quite bold, and rarely hesitates to go towards something he wants. he’s direct in his approach to most everything.
he likes partying. mostly the socialising part, talkin to people is just fun ya feel. and being in the crowd, doing whatever, pressure free? ya can dance n enjoy yourself, and people wont notice? yeah that’s nice. but doesnt do it super often cause broke bitches aint got the party time n budget.
he likes arm. (just an excuse for me to drop this thing here cuz i like it)
While he’s an overall bubbly looking character, with a cheery loud personnality, he does carry some youth trauma that has him more reticent to engage in happiness, he comes from what you could call “not the wokest background” and he may have fallen victim of it : he’s kind of a flashy noticeable character, both physically and in his personnality, and doesnt exactly matches the expectations of dudes in the area he comes from (delicate, emotional and sweet guy? that doesnt exist bro). He went through it, and it has definitly had some impact on his confidence in many aspects. But he’s 100% the type of guy to put on the fake happy front because if feeling bad is sad, making the people you care about sad for you too is Unacceptable Right??? relying on friends?? what???
But then what are we supposed to be doing with such charming characters huh,,,
Make them fall in love obviously.
Their story obviously has to do with falling in love and workin a relationship cause if I dont write romance i literally die, but I make the center pivot of all of it communication, and barriers in communications. Most obvious being them coming from wildly different cultures, having different native languages, and also the ways you adapt to muteness (what i love most bout that part is even then they fucked up given the easiest quickest small body language things to communicate are head nods n then i managed to make one come from the one country that reverses those like iconic how do they even understand each other -through a lot of work and love bro) but also on more “introspective” points, how to say things that you are even afraid to think about, how to open up and share your burdens and trauma with someone, how to say words you’ve been convinced you weren’t allowed to, the inner turmoil of communication in short. And then also communication through art, and through alternative unusual ways. If i were snobbish i could call it something like “a thinkpieces on how humans overcome obstacles in communication, and adapt, all for the sake of pursuing love” but fact is its mostly boys being in love n learning how to speak, figuratively and also quite literally. And also its me having fun with making characters evolve from each other, be able to influence each other for the better, helping each other be more comfortable with themselves and express the true things of their personnality, and discover new aspects. I just wanna write intense and soulful love bro.
So in less concept and more facts, weiwei meets dari, dari being his puppy self just immediatly strikes a conversation and weiwei gets interested cause “oho nice pretty boy? very good. i want some of that”. they get closer because you cant fight off the Power of friendship (and also the power of “what your friend is bestie with my friend?? guess we hanging out”) and then friendship and interest turns into pining, held back by respective dread of what romance with the other would mean (as in “romance?? cant have that we cant feel” and “with him?? cant do that, convince yourself he’s just a friend immediatly what would the family think”) but eventually they do have to just crash into one another cause that’s just the gravitational pull bro, its physics bro. and from then on its all unlearning destructive behaviours, bettering oneself with the help of the other, and getting over trauma to finally live ur best life. and gettin fckin married bro they’re both cheeseballs theyll wanna wed
BUT MAKING EM FALL IN LOVE ONCE ISNT ENOUGH time to make 3894853 alternate universes about em.
Lets speak bout my fave of those for a hot second.
First of all, the one of the art that brought this ask, guess i could call it “Pretty Tribes” AU, bunch of tribes live and do their things, having nature and energy powers. Dari n Weiwei’s tribes are bros, the latter’s powers needing them to move around to get energy from different places, enabling them different abilities. So basically they get to hang at the other’s place while the regenerate energy from there, and in exchange they help them out with various tasks (dari’s tribe is a rly farmer oriented one, with plant magic, while weiwei’s got more poyvalent powers, and have very good healers notably, so it comes in handy). The two boys were born a few months apart in their respective tribes, so naturally, anything the two clans meet, they’re put together to play and all, and from that they became besties, and each time they meet, after the gaps of time separating the two groups, they feel more and more of a little something else~ story is themed round growing up, friendship between clans, their traditions and cultures, and pretty boys in pretty clothes in pretty landscapes interacting with nature.
The superpower AU, i fuckin love it bro. Its an old one, made for other characters, but i just love it so much that i had to inject my faves in it. Its got a grimy ugly setting, bad government, propaganda, and fights between super-people (heavily mediatised for entertainment and reinforcing the idea that “look at these evil villains thank god us the good government protects you from them”), with a side of bad ethics in science. In all that, those two have the role of “those two young enemy warrior and villain, they were so powerful and fought so hard”, public figures, legendary and admired by both sides, everyone followed their fights, til one day they presumably died in one of their showdowns. (haha sike they actually found themselves talking for 5 seconds and realised they lived in a society, n built a plan to run away). The main characters get to find they’re alive because one of em had history with super-warrior-golden-boy and go to seek their help to overthrow the Big Bads. (stealing them from their nice gay cottage hermit life smh so rude)
Mermaids. I like those. Sailor weiwei sees merman dari, they both save each other in different occasions, they grow fascinated with each other, they’re at sea, water romance. Amazing. AU made half cuz i just like water n fish. and shirtless sailors.
(i couldnt find art of it in five minutes so have a link to that lil animatic piece i made of it once)
Indie band AU, where i was listening to songs that vibe so well with those two in general n then my brain was like “what if they’re the ones playing”. They’re (along with the rest of the art squad) a nice little alternative rock band, doing their thing, then one of their songs blows up, and they get quite the attention, to the dismay of dari who wrote that song in a moment of “oh no im so in love with my bandmate but i cant tell him what if i ruin everything we have going on ill just have to love from afar and deal with that” and now has way too many people interested in who he wrote it about and theorising from his every move when performing it (a mix of music, secret crushes and social media) (ft a picture of neither of them but its the least ugly art i found of this AU cuz its old and instruments are the bane of my existence)(also kelana is so pretty i gotta flaunt her around)
in kind of the same vibe, as in we’re in a music world overexposed to social media, i also integrated em to an AU i did for fun, “boyband AU” as its called aka idol based band system cuz you kno, i got a hobby, lets apply it. Band boy Dari and bodyguard Weiwei got a thing going on, but can’t really act on it in any way, because they’d just destroy the whole band if it ever came public. Featuring annoying bandmates, catchy pop songs and people making fanaccounts of that one hot Mr.Bodyguard cause dang he hot.
(all the art of this one so ugly im sorry)
SPY AU, one of my fave brand. They spies, they get assigned on the same mission, they work real nice with each other. spies hot. fights. strategy. i just like the concept. Gays taking down the worst traffics imaginable??? I love that song.(i actually have so much on this cause s p i e s are fuckin great)
Fashion. U kNOW i have an AU for fashion. Supermodel and his private stylist, trying to maintain the line of professionalism. And failing to do so. Lets make out in unpractical designer clothes.
Have an highschool AU for a bunch of characters, injected them as “spinoff”, start chatting online being art buddies, fall in love without meeting (ft. all the iconics of internet friendship like knowing tiny details of their personnalities but not the fact that they have a sister or “waIT ur a GUY i thought u were a girl wow wild good news for my gay ass”)
n those are my faves as far as i remember, i got a fuckton of small other ones that arent fleshed out enough, or some that are more of a guilty pleasure universe, and some that are more like “projects that i can expend on as soon as i run out of daydream material” (like u kno those hospital drama shows with super innacurate medicine n shit like idk scrubs or whatever, yeh i want some of that but im keeping it for later)
#thats way less talk than i thought id do#prolly bc i wrote half of it when it was between midnight and one AM#wait no it was 2 am#but ye#sry if shit messy af#those two are my faves tho n talkin bout em on the spot is hard cuz my brain is screaming about everything bout em at once#if u wanna get more info on em do ask i love them so much n i feel i didnt do em justice here cuz speaking is a fraud words dont exist#im glad they caught ur interest tho#nothin more gratifyin than not being the only bitch who likes his own children
100 Days to Animal Crossing Challenge!
In the spirit of the countdown to New Leaf (remember when? :’) ), and to help wile away the days, here’s 100 questions for every day until New Horizons is here! Enjoy!
1. Do you prefer making up a new name for your villager, or using your own name? I always name my villager after myself. I go for the immersion!
2. Do you use the first map you’re given, or do you reset for layouts? I used to reset for layouts, until I started hacking. In New Horizons, I'll just be resetting for fruit!
3. Do you use the face you’re given, or do you wait for guides and choose your favourite? I would look for guides. Even with hacking, it's easier to just start with the face you want.
4. Favourite town/island name?/Have you a name picked out for your town/island? My favorite town name that I've seen so far is Lunaire. I don't want to share my town name just yet. It's nothing revolutionary or anything but its personal I guess?
5. Will you be sharing with friends/family, or is your island going to be all your own? I will be having my own island! My husband will have his own island as well. He says we'll spend most of our time in my island though lol
6. What’s a new feature you’re excited about? T E R R A F O R M
7. Favourite fruit? Peaches!
8. Least favourite fruit? Pears!
9. Favourite area? (Beach, campground, shopping district etc, from any entry in the series.) My favorite place was the wishing well in ACPG. So cute and sweet. As much as I loved the plaza in ACNL, it's got nothing on the original!
10. Where do you like to like to put your house? Do you like that level of customization, or do you prefer to have some things decided, like in older entries? I like to put my house near waterfalls, its relaxing and good for fishing! I could never get my house near the water in older games, so it was a nice change in ACNL.
11. Favourite grass pattern? Personally, I never really notice the grass patterns!
12. Least favourite grass pattern? See #11 :v
13. Favourite villager/s? My fav villagers are Skye and Punchy 💕
14. Least favourite villager/s? I hate Elise the Monkey
15. Did you like doing Tom Nook’s chores, or did you find those to be a pain? I used to find them a pain as a kid but I miss them now. It was so much more engaging!
16. Favourite NPC/s? My fav would have to be KK. He's such a cool dude, he's just full of nostalgia for me.
17. Least favourite NPC/s? I don't really have a least favorite? I guess Katie's mom, her lipstick is tacky imo
18. Do you use paths? Are you excited about the new path tool? With hacking, I use clover paths so they're easier to see on the editor. I can't wait to have real paths, though!
19. Favourite feature from an older entry? The festivities! The neighbors were so much more engaged in ACPG, ACNL is sorta boring in comparison.
20. What was your first Animal Crossing game? My first was ACPG, the gamecube one!
21. Favourite activity (fishing, bug catching, fossil hunting, other)? Fishing was always exciting AND relaxing for me
22. Least favourite activity? Fossil hunting, but only because I don't get immediately results and I'm impatient lol
23. Favourite bug? Even though I don't like these irl, snails hehe
24. Least favourite bug? Scorpions and tarantulas, only because I've almost never encountered them in ANY game
25. A quarter of the way there! How’s the wait? Agonizing
26. Favourite fish? It's not actually a fish, but I like the softshell turtle!
27. Least favourite fish? The napoleon fish, that big blue one -.-
28. Favourite fossil? The ammonite!
29. Least favourite fossil? Don't really have one lol
30. Favourite furniture series? I've always liked the flower set you get from Leif and the mush set, so cute!
31. Least favourite furniture series? The holiday specific ones, they're so tacky and boring!
32. Favourite soundtrack? (Gamecube, DS/Wii, etc) Gamecube for sure
33. Least favourite soundtrack? Honestly, ACNL. Don't dig the steel drum
34. Favourite wallpaper? The ivy wall hehe
35. Do you have a nice memory of the games/community etc you’d like to share? I didn't really have too much interaction with the community until recently! I just gained a bunch of followers and it's super flattering lol I want to become more involved!
36. Least favourite wallpaper? Cheese...
37. Favourite carpet? I personally love the old board flooring, so simple and rustic!
38. Least favourite carpet? CHEESE
39. Favourite furniture item? The fairy bottle from the Welcome Amiibo update!
40. Will you be buying a Switch for Animal Crossing, or do you already have one? I'm trading in my old switch for the slick new Animal Crossing Switch!
41. Least favourite furniture item? The ultra things that you can get from Redd, so useless!
42. Favourite flower? Carnations!
43. Least favourite flower? Cosmos!
44. Favourite hybrid? Blue roses for sure
45. Least favourite hybrid? Any cosmos
46. Favourite shirt? The denim shirt, long sleeve
47. Favourite dress? I like the raincoat
48. Favourite accessory? Silver frames!
49. Favourite hat/helmet? The keroppi pins
50. Halfway there! How’s the wait going? Pretty numb!
51. Favourite shop? Dream Suite! So much fun visiting towns!
52. Do you collect amiibo cards/figures? Would you like to see them used in the new game? I have all the amiibo cards are all my fav neighbors, and about have of the total amiibo cards that exist. Idk if I'll use them right away and get all my favs or if I'll let my town naturally fill up and then switch folks out yet
53. Fishing Tourney or Bug-Off? Fishing Tourney, I like fishing more
54. Do you like making your own clothing patterns? I used to, but ACPC made me appreciate the already made in game clothes
55. Did you streetpass with many other ACNL players, or is it a feature you didn’t get much use of? I don't get much use out of it nowadays but I would always come back from conventions with a full showcase when I was younger
56. Favourite villager species? Cats!
57. Least favourite villager species? Monkeys
58. Favourite nickname from a villager? I don't really remember the nicknames I got
59. Least favourite nickname from a villager? I also always hated them!
60. Do you try to collect everything in the game, or just try to get your favourite bits and pieces? Bits and pieces for sure
61. Favourite villager personality? Normal and lazy
62. Least favourite villager personality? Jock
63. Do you “plot reset” for villager house placement, or do you let them move in wherever they want? During my first playthrough of ACNL, I didn't. Then I started doing it when I learned about it. Then I started hacking!
64. Are you excited to wear any of the new accessories (like the bags etc shown in the E3 trailer)? ACPC sorta spoiled that stuff for me, they're still very much appreciated though
65. What season are you most looking forward to seeing in New Horizons? Spring!! 🌸🌸🌸
66. What’s your favourite season? Spring again hehe
67. Least favourite season? Summer, kinda boring
68. Which game’s events/holidays do you like the most? Ones that are actually engaging with you and the neighbors
69. Which game’s events/holidays do you like least? Days like solstices, which just served as "Isabelle is unavailable" Days
70. Do you have another nice AC related memory you’d like to share (in-game, of the community, etc)? When ACPG came out, I was about 6. I had a DVD with those lame live action commercials and I was ENAMORED with them! Obsessed! I begged my parents for the game and they would hem and haw "well there's a lot of reading... you'll have to get better at reading... we won't always be able to help you read it..." and I swore up and down that I'd learn and practice reading. Obviously, nearly 20 years later, I'm still completely obsessed
71. Do you prefer the “live” versions of K.K. Slider’s Songs, or the airchecks? I like both but for different reasons. The live versions are nice and nostalgic and the air checks are closer to the aesthetic that they're actually trying to portray
72. An NPC you’d like to see more of? Farley and Serena!
73. An NPC you’d like to see less of? None in particular, everyone is pretty well designed imo
74. If you could have any piece of AC merchandise, which would it be? I once saw a cute bento box with pics from the movie, my soul died knowing I may never find it to buy anywhere
75. Only 25 days left to go! How’s the wait? Still numb!
76. Will you be downloading the game, or getting a physical copy? I'm getting a physical copy and my husband is getting a digital, so he can't be tempted to sell it!
77. Do you like coming up with your own town tune/flag, or using what the game gives you/something from a book/tv show/other game, etc? I like doing a sort of japanese "end of school" bell for my town tune, only for the town clock. Idk how I'm gonna do it in this game though...
78. Do you play every day, or every other day/when you feel like it/other? I used to play ACNL everyday, then it got a bit boring. I'm gonna play ACNH literally everyday forever lol
79. Are you the kind of person who starts over after leaving their town for a really long time, or do you try to get right back to it? I tend to restart a lot, but I recently decided to leave my ACNL town with no regrets so I hacked the crap out of it without feeling tacky or cringy
80. Do you remember how you got into the Animal Crossing series? It immediately caught my eye as a 6 year old and its had its grasp on me since
81. Do you like to make up a story for the town/character when you play, or do you just play as yourself? I play as myself but I sorta make a bunch of headcanons for myself and my neighbors and stuff to make it more interesting for me. Sometimes its embarrassing and sometimes I need to tell the people!
82. Favourite dream address / “theme” for a town (pastel, fairytale, forest, horror, etc)? My favorite town has always been Pastelia, although the mayor's name is escaping me atm >m<"
83. Do you like to have your house fully upgraded/paid off, or do you like keeping it smaller/having fewer rooms? I used to fully upgrade my house all the time but my current ACNL house only have 4 rooms and that's IT
84. Favourite hairstyle? The one with the middle split and it goes behind the ears
85. Least favourite hairstyle? The three ponytails, rip ACWW me
86. Favourite hair colour? I go either pink or my natural brown
87. Least favourite hair colour? That bright green...
88. Do you prefer wearing in-game clothes, or custom designs? In game clothes!
89. Favourite hourly track? 2 pm from ACPG
90. Just ten more days! How’re you feeling? Half paid off my new switch, so ready!
91. Least favourite hourly track? I don't think I have one!
92. Do you prefer to know all about the game before designing your town/island/house, or do you like to wing it? Bro, I've been glued to my phone since the direct came out
93. Another nice Animal Crossing memory? ACNL came out around the time my husband and I started dating, almost exactly at the same time. Now its 8 years later, we're married, and we're gonna play another animal crossing game together finally!
94. Are you excited about same-system multiplayer? Its gonna be great for a lot of people, kinda useless for me though
95. Five more days! Are you going to trade/use amiibo to get your favourite villager, or wait for them to move in themselves/make a new favourite? I think I'll put in my 2 top favs, and then see what comes. Maybe after a few months I'll put everyone in
96. Favourite emotion/Shrunk joke? I don't really like his jokes, but my fav emotions to use are the bashful ones
97. Least favourite emotion/Shrunk joke? Not a fan of his dopey dance
98. Is there a feature you’d like to add to Animal Crossing? I wanna be able to decorate for my neighbors so badly!
99. Is there a feature you’d take away? It kinda seems like a lot of issues were solved in ACNH, I guess we'll see what's leftover as an annoying feature
100. Final day! Any more thoughts? Midnight release at my local gamestop! Gonna be there with a bunch of DOOM fans too! Can't wait!!
I was tagged by @cupcakecurl a while back (thank you!) and finally I’m on the mood for doing this myself as well!
Rules: tag 9 people you’d like to get to know better!
Top 3 current ships: I actually have just one OTP, which is Bela/Farin (aka FUB) from Die Ärzte, and then multiple smaller ones here and there. I’m finding new ships way too easily and sometimes it bugs me because I meant to enjoy a thing and boom, suddenly I have a ship there to fuck up with my brain. B/F is pretty much the only ship that I can say to actually ship, the rest are more like just for fun, I enjoy seeing stuff but I don’t really do anything about it, you know?
But now as I think of it, I think of it, I could say another band ship here: Paulchard aka Paul Landers and Richard Z. Kruspe from Rammstein, about these I have also watched videos and read some fancomics too and last summer’s tour was a wild one and I was following the events quite a lot.
And then maybe I could throw one fictional ship here too as it’s pretty much current one since I just finished watching the 5th season of Gotham last week, and that is, of course Nygmobblepot aka Penguin/The Riddler aka Oswald Cobblepot/Edward Nygma. I’ve never in my life shipped these before, even tho I’ve been a Batman fan since 1999 (I was 8) as I saw the 60s series on TV and I can remember almost shipping Batman and Robin back then, and I was only 8 years old!, and then had been watching the movies more or less during my childhood, but this was never something I’d even think of before I started watching Gotham and things started happening in the show. But it’s an interesting one. And I have to admit that while the show was still running and I couldn’t watch it because I live in Europe (and was too lazy to look for a website to watch it :D), I was still browsing the tag on Tumblr after each episode and giving myself spoilers of what happens with them. But I think the ending was a lot different than what I thought based on the Tumblr posts, and I’m actually not sure what to think of it. Imho it was not as bad as everyone else seemed to think.
I’m putting this under a read more link as this is getting way too long and I don’t know if people are interested in reading my weird thoughts about ships and other random stuff, so here you go...
Top 3 all-time ships: Oh my gosh, I have had so many but only like 2 actually strong ones? And I have to say Bela/Farin here as well, the reasons are found from above and I’m just so obsessed with them and idc what it is, already the friendship is like friendhip goals, you know? But yeah, I’ve been making videos about these two idiots for like last 10 years so... :D
And the next one, okay I’m usually not so talkative about ships. I can talk about them with people in private but I don’t like to go and shout about them publicly, probably the only one I talk about this way is Bela/Farin but it’s because Tumblr is a safe place for this and there’s no hate with this ship or anything (and the other one is Paulchard, every now and then I will reblog something that crosses my dash). But mainly I like to keep ships to myself and like I said in that other tag game post, ships are more like a guilty pleasure. Maybe because of my age as it was very normal at the age of 15 but now as I’m 28? Why am I still “in love with other people’s love”? I actually don’t mind it but I think many people would find it weird, especially when I don’t read fanfictions anymore and I don’t want to imagine anything, I just like seeing cute stuff, but with many ships I don’t even want to see too much, I just like seeing them being close but with many ships even seeing them kiss would be too much.
But anyway, top 3 all-time ships... I think I need to mention here a ship that I was very much obsessed when I was 15-17, that I wrote LOTS OF fanfiction and was there to make lots of fan theories and all, and that one was Frerard aka Gerard Way/Frank Iero from My Chemical Romance. I was SO obsessed it’s insane. If you know anything about MCR and Frerard, you maybe are aware of how was the year 2007 and you can probably imagine how crazy we all went when Project Revolution stuff happened. So yeah, I need to mantion that here even tho I no longer “believe in this ship”, but I guess I’d lie if I said, that I didn’t believe that there was something there back in the day. I’ve actually recently been watching some Frerard theory videos just for fun, because there’s so many things I had forgotten and so many things I still can remember, but also lots of stuff that I kinda missed because they happened in 2010-2012, and even tho I was still very much in the fandom and I was to their second gig in Finland in 2011, I still was not that much into the Danger Days album so I was not so into digging up stuff either. And I had my own identity crisis and Die Ärzte had been my favorite band for 1-2 years at that time so I was spending lots of time watching DÄ videos, so MCR was kinda at the background. And then the whole band went quiet for some time until they quit in 2013 (and now they’re back), so all that Frerard hype kinda died after each of them started to get married to other people and the kids were born, so there just... kinda was no more room for the ship, you know? But Freard was my first actual huge slash ship, I’ve had others before it (for example, my first touch to slash fiction was Harry Potter fanfiction and of course Harry/Draco stuff, but that one also later died out), but it was the first really strong one and then Bela/Farin kinda took its place as Frerard died out but B/F has been going strong and the ship has been sailing itself since the 80s, so... :D
And as the last one I think I could again mention something fictional but at the same time something that is super weird for me as it’s not slash fiction but hetship, which is something REALLY weird for me. I usually don’t like heteroships as they’re just... boring and so cliché. But I need to mention this one that I got into when I was 15: Fox Mulder and Dana Scully from The X-Files. Yeah I know it was 2006 and the series had ended already in 2002, but I was a new fan! I had known about the series since I was a little kid as my dad was watching it back then, but I started watching it myself when the show had a rerun here in 2004-2005. And then I met my friend in 2006 when we were 15 and we found out that we both were very much into TXF and I remember how we somehow both started to ship Mulder and Scully (having no idea of how the series ended), and it was probably until the 6th season (there was 9 seasons at the time) when they stopped airing it altogether, so we were so furious about the fact because the last episode was such a cliffhanger and we NEEDED TO KNOW, so I had to buy them on dvd! So I remember how we would meet at school every day and after every episode, we went so crazy, discussing what had happened in the episode and if there was any Mulder/Scully activity, we were just so hyped :D And then, as we STILL hadn’t seen all the seasons, we went to see the second movie (”TXF: I want to believe”) in theaters in 2008 or so, and it’s set to happen after the events of the seasons, we were both so blown away by what was in the movie because we had no clue :D Fun fact: I actually finished watching the 9th season only last year. So now I understand the events of the second movie a lot better, and I’ve also seen the 10th and 11th seasons so now I’m finally aware of everything. But that really is a hetship that I accept and that is not like a typical movie romance type of ship. It has interesting dynamics.
---
Last song: Tatuoituna by Tehosekoitin
Lipstick or chapstick: Chapstick, I don’t use any make-up, but chapstick I need to use daily.
Last movie: Iron Sky. I’ve seen it before tho, but we’re gonna watch the sequel soon, so we had to watch this to remember what happened :D (And it’s made partially by Finns, so..!)
Reading: Atm I have 3 books I’m reading, all of them in Finnish:
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, which has all the short stories in one. But I think there’s some of the newer ones missing and that’s why I bought this bit newer book with more stories, and I’m gonna read those once I’m finished with this one. And I’ve been reading this now for years lol... but I’m slowly getting there, I’m already over halfway through :D
A collection of Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories, I don’t know the name for this book and it doesn’t say any name for the original. This one I also started to read a years back, only to pause if for years and then last year I borrowed it again from my dad and tried to continue from where I was left the last time.
The Heroes of Olympus: The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan. I’ve been reading his books ever since I was a, well, teenager probably, and I have had a long pause with these books and reading overall, but now I’m back at it and trying to buy and read all of his books I still haven’t read.
I wanted to read the latter only after finishing with SH and Poe’s stories but I needed to read something and they’re bit too difficult reading at the times, and I needed something lighter but also didn’t want to start over with Harry Potter for the 5th time so I decided to go for this series instead. I really like reading SH and Poe’s stories, but like I said, they’re bit difficult at the times. You can’t just read them, you need to think and use your brains meanwhile you’re reading, and sometimes it’s just so incredibly hard to stay focused on it and I need to go back so often because I wasn’t paying attention and then had no clue what was happening and why.
And I sometimes I skip some of Poe’s stories because they’re so purely scientific about a topic that I cannot comprehend nor care about, e.g. this one story that was almost like a science essay about hot-air balloon flight in the form of a story, probably super interesting for someone who likes this kind of stuff and even more interesting for a writer interested in stuff like that, but I’m really not the target audience of that story :D But then there’s also lots of really interesting ones, I especially like the ones that have something to do with insanity. I guess people would call them as the horror stories, but idk, I just love that kind of mystery. For some reason all of my favorite stories are those where there is a dead woman/love interest :DD But probably my ultimate favorite is the one about writing an article to a magazine with horror stories, and how this guy become beheaded and all just to write a story about how it feels like and stays alive meanwhile, and I just LOVE IT when fictional works play with death and when something that is supposed to kill you, doesn’t, and I just love the idea of that story so much :D It’s just that you never know how a story will be like, as you start reading, is it a scientific essay or a mystery or a horror story or about insanity or what is it? And then when in the middle of reading and you realize this is bit boring or uninteresting, but still want to finish, but also want to skip, and that’s why I get stuck with that book, and I change to SH or something else. Often I also grab some of the comics (or non-fiction books) I own whenever I feel like reading but these books feel too heavy for that moment.
---
I should tag 9 people but I don’t even know that many people to tag lol. Okay I do know people, but I still don’t know who wants to be tagged and who doesn’t. Maybe I’ll be boring and tag @stufenlosregelbar again? :D And idk, maybe @annika-of-the-lost? Eh, I’m so bad at this whole tagging thing. I’m having a bad conscience if I don’t tag anyone/enough people in case they want to be tagged and I can’t read minds; and then I’m having bad conscience when I DO tag people in case they’re all somewhere facepalming and screaming “WHYYYYYY” into the void, as I still can’t read minds. So you can choose, do this tag game or ignore it and ban me from ever tagging you people again, I don’t mind :p
Secret Santa - Stiles Stilinski
Summary: The pack does Secret Santa for Christmas and Stiles’ has to get you the perfect gift
Stiles Stilinski x Reader
Word Count: 2,175
Author’s Note: I’m sorry this is late and I’m a liar and didn’t have both imagines done on time and queued up. A bit of writers block and laziness goes a long way in writing lol. I’ll do better next Christmas.
Lydia wrote down everyone’s names and placed them in one of Scott’s baseball hats. She shook it around a little then went up to everyone so they could pick a name out. You all sat around in Scott’s living room, some more eager than the others about doing a Secret Santa. Since you were all high school kids, and only Scott had a job, some of you thought it was best to get one person in the pack a gift instead of having the pressure to get everyone a gift.
Allison went first, then Malia, Liam, and finally it came to you. You reached into the hat, digging around a moment before you pulled out a name.
Stiles.
A smile tugged at your lips but you didn’t want to get to excited in front of everyone. You knew the perfect gift to get Stiles.
Lydia continued around the room until there was one left for her. Luckily, no one pulled their own names, so no one had to pull again. Lydia plopped onto the couch next to you and immediately asked, “Who did you get?”
“Lyds, it’s Secret Santa. I don’t want your smart brain figuring out who has you by the process of elimination.”
“So that means you don’t have me,” Lydia nodded with a smirk on her face.
“I didn’t-,” you started to say but Lydia gave you a look and you knew it was too late. “Fine, I don’t have you. Happy now?”
“Yes, that narrows down my potential gift givers.”
Meanwhile on the other side of the living room Scott got up to grab some cold sodas from the kitchen. Stiles quickly hopped over the couch to follow him.
“Are you Y/N’s Secret Santa,” Stiles asked when they were alone in the kitchen.
“You do understand how Secret Santa works, don’t you,” Scott asked opening up the refrigerator.
“I’m not an idiot, but I needed to get Y/N. It’s a crucial part of my make Y/N fall in love with me plan.”
“Exactly how is you getting Y/N a Christmas gift important to that plan,” Scott asked leaning against the counter. He had what he came to the kitchen for but he wanted to hear what his best friend had to say.
“Alright, so I get her the perfect Christmas gift. She gets all emotional and happy about it. She realizes I really know who she is as a person. I actually listen to her. Then she looks at me as potentially being more then just a friend. Then I ask her out and she doesn’t say no,” Stiles answered, his hand finally landing on his hips from them previous moving around a lot as he talked.
“Why don’t you just ask her out? I’m pretty sure she won’t say no,” Scott said picking the sodas back up and turning to walk away.
“I can’t just ask her out,” Stiles said offended.
As Scott began to walk out his kitchen, a crumbled up piece of paper fell out of his pocket. Before he could lean down to pick it up, Stiles swooped in and grabbed it.
“Ha,” Stiles yelled after he opened the paper. “You did have Y/N,” he said trying to whisper. Although you weren’t a werewolf, he preferred if the other wolves and one coyote in the room didn’t hear him.
Scott sighed as he shook his head. “Go ahead and take it.” Scott moved all the sodas to one arm and reached out to Stiles. “Give me whoever you got.”
Stiles reached in his pocket and handed over the slip of paper to Scott. “I’m sure Liam will love whatever you get him,” Stiles said then patted his friend on the back before making his way to the living room.
After everyone settled from finding out who they were getting a Christmas gift for, Scott popped in a movie.
Stiles was beginning to think getting you the perfect Christmas gift was impossible. He couldn’t just get you any regular old gift. Nothing from Bath and Body Works. No DVD box set of the complete series of your favorite show. A gift card wasn’t meaningful. It had to be special. Something sentimental. Something he could afford.
When Stiles finally realized what to get you, it almost seemed impossible to get. But werewolves were impossible too right? Stiles was very stubborn and determined when he wanted to be and this was one of those times.
The gift he wanted to get you couldn’t be purchased at any old store. He checked Amazon and Ebay. He searched local pawn and thrift shops next with no luck. He called nearby towns in between classes until he found a thrift shop three hours away with what he needed.
“Scott,” Stiles said after he ran up next to his friend in the hallway. “You want to go to Rosewood with me?”
“What’s in Rosewood?”
“Y/N’s gift,” Stiles answered smiling. He was excited that he finally found your gift and there was only a week until you all would exchange gifts.
“That’s like 3 hours away,” Scott said.
“Actually, it’s 2 hours and 40 minutes away.”
“That’s still pretty far for a Christmas gift, but I guess I’ll ride with you.”
“Great, grab your stuff.”
“What,” Scott asked looking at Stiles confused.
“I was planning on going now.”
“Now? We still have 2 hours left in school. Can’t it wait until the weekend?”
“No, Scott. The guy who answered the phone said he wouldn’t hold it for me and I have to get it before someone else does first.”
“Don’t you think we miss enough school already without us leaving to go pick up a gift,” Scott said closing his locker.
“Yeah, but this is really important. It’s the only place that I’ve found nearby that has what I need.”
“Three hours isn’t exactly nearby,” Scott pointed out.
“Okay, it could be a little closer. But I’m going right now and I thought maybe my best friend would want to accompany me on this possibly historic journey that is the future of me and Y/N.”
“Now you’re just being dramatic,” Scott said shaking his head beginning to walk down the hallway. “I’m not missing class, but if you have to go now, just let me know when you make it there and get back. You’re jeep isn’t the most reliable vehicle for trips like that.”
“Ugh, that jeep has been there for us through everything! Don’t disrespect him like that,” Stiles said offended while Scott kept walking down the hall. He guessed he’d just have to make the almost 3 hour trip by himself. But he would drive 6 hours to get you the perfect gift.
On Christmas Eve, the pack got together to exchange gifts at Scott’s house. You all took your usual spots in Scott’s living room excited to open your gifts. It was decided that everyone would open their gifts one at a time, then the Secret Santa would reveal themself after all the gifts were open.
So far everyone loved their gifts. Stiles was blown away by your gift; a mini replica of his jeep Roscoe.
You were the last one to open your Christmas gift. The box was covered in little snowmen with a huge blue bow on it. You pulled the bow off and ripped the paper open allowing you to open the lid. Your mouth dropped when you realized what it was.
“Oh my God,” you said tossing the lid aside.
“What is it,” Lydia asked from beside you.
“It’s a teddy bear I had when I was younger,” you answered while you stared down at the bear in awe. “It was practically glued to my hip until there was a fire at my friend’s house and I left him in there.”
The whole room was quiet as you took in the gift. Stiles eagerly waited for you to say something else. That you loved it. That it was childish and you out grew the toy along time ago. Something.
You took the bear out of the box carefully rubbing your fingers through the bear’s fur. “Who did this,” you asked looking around the room at all your friends. Everyone you made eye contact with shook their head until your eyes landed on Stiles.
He was staring right back at you, his whiskey eyes shining bright as the Christmas lights in the room twinkled. “Stiles?” He nodded his head a little to answer your question. “How did you...When? I mean... they don’t make these bears anymore. My mom checked after the fire. My grandpa gave me the bear and we could never find another one.”
“I did a little Googling and called a few thrift stores around the area,” he said shrugging his shoulders like it was nothing.
You were speechless at Stiles’ gift. Lydia looked between the two of you as you gawked at him in admiration. “Alright,” Lydia said clasping hands together, her holiday red nails sparkling as she moved. “I think it’s time the rest of us revealed ourselves to our Secret Santa gift recipients.”
Stiles and you stood up in what felt like slow motion then walked over to each other.
“Stiles... I love this so much,” you said squeezing the bear in your hands while you looked at him. “I can’t believe you did this. I’m still racking my brain for when I even told you about the bear.”
“Actually, I forgot about it until I was at the hospital with Scott when he was dropping some food off for his mom,” Stiles said as he rubbed the back of his neck. “I saw this little girl crying until her mom gave her this little brown bear and something in my brain clicked. I remember you mentioning it a few years ago when we had to go to the Hale’s old house. I think it reminded you of the fire at your friend’s house.”
“You’re an amazing guy, Stiles Stilinski,” you said grinning up at him.
Stiles grinned back at you like an idiot for a few moments before he spoke. “Umm I should probably find out who my Secret Santa is so I can thank them.”
“I know who it was,” you told him.
“Who?”
“Me.”
“You are? I should have guessed it,” Stiles said smiling at you. “Only you would be crafty enough to make me a scale model of my jeep.”
“So you really like it,” you asked not sure if he was just pretending like he liked his gift when he opened it.
“I love it. It’s amazing.”
“Great,” you said grabbing his hand. “I was a little worried my gift was going to suck,” you said slowly taking a step back making Stiles follow you.
“I’d love any gift you’d give me because it’s from you.”
Your smile grew three times bigger than it already was as you kept stepping back. “So it seems like we both know each other pretty well based off our gifts then.”
“I’d like to think I know you pretty well.”
“You do,” you said finally stopping. “But I think there’s still somethings about me that would surprise you.”
“Like what,” Stiles asked.
You stepped closer to Stiles and moved quickly before your nerves got the better of you. Your fingers wrapped around the back of his neck, pulling him closer. Stiles’ lips collided with yours, his minty breath mixing with your winter fresh one. Ignoring the stares you knew were coming from your friends, you wrapped your other hand around Stiles, deepening the kiss.
Pulling away slowly, your eyes stayed closed briefly as you hoped you hadn’t misread any of Stiles’ signals.
‘Umm,” Stiles said blinking a few times, “Not that I’m complaining, but what was that for?”
Your hands fell from Stiles neck to his shoulders. “For remembering something I said forever ago. For finding a teddy bear that I had when I was child. For going out of your way to get the bear because I know when you said you called a few stores, you meant you searched high and low until you found it,” you said then paused as you gazed into his eyes. “Also because we’re under the mistletoe.”
Stiles looked up finally noticing that the two of you had moved under the entrance way where the mistletoe had been placed by Melissa weeks ago.
“I always liked mistletoe. Incredible plant,” Stiles said nodding as he smiled.
You giggled at Stiles before you heard a cough and turned to look at your friends who were all looking at you.
“Does this mean you two are finally together,” Liam asked. “I swear if I have to smell that jealousy scent every time Stiles see you talking to another guy I’m going to vomit.”
You turned to face Stiles, a bit of shock on your face, “You were jealous?”
“What? No, why would I be...,” Stiles blabbered looking at you then turning to face Liam. “Liam would you like to find out what happens when a werewolf ingests mistletoe?”
Epic Movie (Re)Watch #240 - Ice Age
Spoilers Below
Have I seen it before: Yes
Did I like it then: Yes.
Do I remember it: Yes.
Did I see it in theaters: I don’t think so?
Format: Digital HD
1) This is one of only two films where I only own digital copies of them as opposed to hard copies. In the case of Ice Age, it happened when I linked up MoviesAnywhere and Vudu (or possibly when I linked one of those to my iTunes account). My family owns a DVD copy so I did grow up watching it but I never thought it’d be part of my (re)watch. But a digital copy is still owning it, so here we are.
2) Meeting Scrat.
Scrap has become the most iconic part of the series and that is because (much like the Minions in Despicable Me) he is the franchise’s certified Scene Stealer™. His little adventures are so simple it’s genius: his motivation is simply to collect and/or store his nut(s). But the slapstick that ensues, the escalating sense of cause & effect, not to mention the vocals provided by director Chris Wedge have made him into an animation icon. He’s Blue Sky’s mascot and even has his own balloon in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Opening with Scrat is a strong way to start the film.
3) The herd migration immediately following Scrat’s adventure has a lot of sharp humor I didn’t pick up on as a kid. Namely the debate of, “How do we know it’s an Ice Age?”, the kids playing “Extinction”, and the character who thinks he’s on the cusp of an, “evolutionary breakthrough,” before trying to fly. It sets the wit for the tone up well.
4) Manny as portrayed by Ray Romano.
Manny’s character is well established immediately by his literal moving against the crowd when walking through the migration herd. He’s set up as abrasive and harsh but we’re also quickly given reason to root for the Wooly Mammoth.
Manny: “You know I don’t like animals that kill for pleasure.”
Ray Romano does great as the voice of Manny, in fact all three members of the herd are great. Romano plays against his “Everybody Loves Raymond” type of the sort of passive momma’s boy by being not only strong but assertive throughout the film. And it just feels right. It’s a good first character to meet.
5) Sid the Sloth as portrayed by John Leguizamo.
Leguizamo is nearly unrecognizable as Sid in this film. The amount of saliva you can just HEAR in his voice, the nerdy quality, but also the warmth and humor, I think Leguizamo gives the best performance in the film. Much like Manny, Sid is well introduced from the start when we learn his family has ditched him. We get the impression he’s a bit of a pain but also we can SEE he’s well intentioned if a little much. It’s understandable why people are hard on him while we are also given good enough reason to root for him. I like Sid.
6) Thing I didn’t pick up on as a kid: the rhinos Carl and Frank are totally a couple, right?
7) This movie is a lot funnier than I remember.
youtube
8) It is worth noting Manny’s line about, “animals that kill for pleasure,” sets up the rules of this world. There are carnivore characters we’re meant to sympathize with and root for in this movie. This line basically sets up the rule: killing for survival is fine but killing for pleasure is not. That is an important element when we’re introduced to our villain later.
9) The literal human element of the film - the nomadic hunters and gatherers - helps ground the film a little. It’s an element I appreciate and missed in the movie’s sequels which began involving dinosaurs and a flying saucer at one point.
10) Remember in note #8 when I mentioned the moral rules this film plays by. Well, the villain Soto is immediately breaking those rules. He wants to kill a BABY of the human leader just for revenge. A BABY. It’s not food, it’s not survival, it’s a Khan-esque mission of wrath and cruelty. And Soto is chilling. We actually don’t get to see much of him in the movie, but his mere presence shows off the threat he is. I think that comes at a combination of writing, voice acting, and design for the animal. I dig it.
11) Just an observation: like the Minions in Despicable Me (who Scrat is very much a precursor to), Scrat is best used in small doses sprinkled throughout the film.
12) The plot of this film is basically Three Men & A Baby set in the ice age with extinct animals (except Sid, unless his specific brand of Sloth is gone). But that’s a plot which inherently has a lot of heart to it, the idea of bonding and found family. It helps give the film an emotional core I appreciate.
13) It’s probably just my own interpretation and desire to see more representation in media, but I feel like there’s so much LGBTQ+ subtext in the movie and I dig that.
Diego [on Manny and Sid with the baby]: “Can’t have one of your own so you decided to adopt.”
14) Diego as portrayed by Denis Leary.
The third member of the herd, Diego is a wonderfully fleshed out character. We get the intimidating and fierce predator but we also have the heartfelt development where it is easy to root for him. It is believable that he finds a sense of family with Manny and Sid. I think this duality is well played by Leary, who is able to make Diego a threat in the beginning but also put enough heart/warmth in the performance that we like him as a character. All of this makes his changing sides towards the movie’s end feel natural, making him a nice final member to the herd.
15) The immediate Sid and Manny have with Diego is founded on mistrust, they EXPECT him to eat the baby, which creates a unique conflict at the heart of their relationship. It’s interesting seeing them overcome this conflict.
16) While strong as individuals, each member of the trio work well in the herd together. They have a fun chemistry and play off each other well.
youtube
17) The Dodos!
This is one of my favorite scenes from the film and that’s because I get the joke so much more now as an adult than I did as a kid. WE’RE WATCHING THE DODOS GO EXTINCT! The fast paced energy, slapstick elements, and unique characters which the dodos are make it a wonderfully entertaining scene. And Alan Tudyk voices the lead Dodo! (Along with two other characters in the movie)
18) I like how each member of Diego’s pack is voiced by someone noteworthy as its made up of Jack Black, Diedrich Bader and Alan Tudyk (again).
19) This got me laughing pretty hard, not gonna lie.
Female Sloth [lovingly, after seeing how Sid is with the baby]: “All the sensitive guys get eaten.”
20) “Send Me On My Way” is one of my favorite songs and this film introduced me to it, so I’ll always be grateful for that.
youtube
21) File this one under jokes I didn’t get as a kid.
Manny [when pacing Stonehenge]: “Modern architecture. It’ll never last.”
22) I might be Sid.
Sid [when offered to go through a dangerous short cut]: “No thanks, I choose life.”
23) I love the hall of ice gag, especially the alien at the end.
24) The ice slide sequence is really fun and one of the strongest “action” pieces in the film. It just has a sense of adrenaline and enjoyment to it that’s hard to beat.
25) The cave painting scene.
youtube
This is the heart of Manny’s character. The decision to animate this scene differently from the rest of the film helps to give it a sense of identity and almost nightmare like quality. Because it is a nightmare, but it still happened. In an absolutely heartbreaking moment we learn that Manny not only is a widower but he lost his child too. Usually in animated films it’s an orphaned kid but parents aren’t supposed to outlive their kids, so the fact that Manny had to go through that explains perfectly his isolationist tendencies.
26) A key moment of character development for Diego comes when he and the group are running across the river of lava (lake of lava? It’s lava). He realizes this herd will do something for him his pack wouldn’t: risk their lives for him.
27) This is the heart movie in one moment.
Manny [after Diego asks why he saved him]: “That’s what you do in a herd. You look out for each other.”
28) When Soto illustrates how to take down a mammoth (by backing them in a corner) there is a wonderful sense of tension. The visualization there really illustrates the stakes to come.
29) The climax of the film starts with a sense of fun and energy we’ve come to except so far, what with Sid’s snowboarding moves on full display as he outmaneuvers the tigers. But the change in tone to a more intense encounter involving Soto, Diego and Manny feels organic. There is a sense of tension here which works well and Soto’s dialogue-free death is particularly effective.
30) I think I’m definitely Sid.
Sid: “Ah, you know me. I’m too lazy to hold a grudge.”
31) The scene where Manny returns the baby to the humans carries a lot of tension. We know how badly this can go, we saw it in the cave painting. So the fact that it ends happily makes the emotional pay off even stronger.
32)
Manny [to the baby]: “We won’t forget about you.”
But we won’t mention you ever again in the sequels.
33)
Sid [expressing his dissatisfaction with the Ice Age]: “You know what I could go for? Global warming!” Manny: “Keep dreaming.”
34) The epilogue which showcases that Scrat is chasing that nut of his for 2,000 years is a perfect representation of his character. I dig it.
Ice Age is a lot of fun and, in hindsight, pretty underrated. I know that’s odd to say about a film that kicked off a five movie franchise, but the franchise became so different from the original movie and the original is still pretty unique in its setting and look. With a great wit, strong character, a good heart, and quality performances, it’s feasibly one of the best animated films from the early 00′s.
Chocolate
a/n: cute lil idea that came to mind :) enjoy! masterlist
It was storming in Gotham and nobody, not even the Joker, was crazy enough to be out tonight. Bruce had called right before the power went out telling us to keep indoors tonight. I had been at Jason’s all day helping him with some spring cleaning and decided to spend the night, knowing I’d have to walk through the storm to get home. We lit candles and turned on a few lanterns throughout the apartment and were chilling on his couch. His laptop was open on the coffee table and playing a movie we found in his DVD’s.
“Do you know why I love chocolate?” I asked Jason suddenly, my foot lightly nudging his side as we sat on opposite ends. We were currently in the process of consuming anything in his fridge that could melt or go bad.
“Because it’s sweet?” he guessed, his eyes still trained on the screen.
“Well, obviously, but it’s more than that,” I begin, moving to sit up. I reached over to the computer and hit the space button to pause the movie, gaining his full attention. “There are so many different kinds of chocolate and just about all of them are amazing. Chocolate is like the steadiest part of my life that’s also too good and too established to change. It’s here when I’m celebrating when I need a pick me up, or when I’m moody, it’s basically my safety net…” I trail now staring at the small square in my hand.
It’s silent for a moment as Jay takes in everything I’ve said and then he starts to laugh, cackle, really.
“Laugh all you want Todd,” I call out. “Chocolate’s my best friend,” I smirk as he shuts up.
“Sorry doll, but that’s my job,” he huffed a small pout on his lips.
“Not anymore,” I smiled taking the last bite of the delectable treat in my hand. “Chocolate doesn’t laugh at me.”
Suddenly his hands are around me and his fingers are digging into my sides. He had launched himself over the middle of the couch to be on top of me as he tickled me, causing me to lay down and squirm against his hold. Despite trying my best not to laugh, the giggles begin to spill from my lips on their own accord.
“St….sto….Stop! Stop! Jay! Please!” I wheezed out between laughs as his fingers refused to let up on their torturous ways.
“Not until you take it back, and say out loud that I Jason Peter Todd am a better best friend than chocolate can ever hope to be,” he stated with a dramatic flair to his tone as I continued to gasp for air in between my fits of laughter.
My sides now had that dull pain to them as my abdomen continued to spasm as Jay was still tickling me. “Ok!” I huffed out. “I’ll say it, just stop!” I begged.
“Gotta say it first doll,” he smirked, still above me.
“You’re better!” I squeaked. “You’re my best friend!” I panted as he slowly ended his attack, his hands still pressed against my waist, waiting for me to either finish his request or continue tickling me if I refuse to give in. “You’re a better best friend than chocolate. Jay...” I sighed as I caught my breath.
My eyes shut as I tried to get my breathing back to normal, when it had evened out enough they fluttered open and met Jason’s blue orbs. His hands were still around my waist and he was still basically atop of me as he looked at me.
“Oh god, you’re the worst,” I huffed, pushing him back to his side of the couch as I sat up, my sides still sore.
“Correction, I’m your best friend,” He winked settling comfortably on his side.
“Whatever helps you sleep at night Todd,” I smirked.
He moved towards me once again but this time to dodge him I tumbled, ungracefully, to the floor beside the couch, landing with a thud.
“Are you okay?” he laughed, he was now spread out on the couch, looking down at me.
“Lovely,” I groaned and my skin prickled with goosebumps from the cold.
While in my blanket burrito I was surrounded by warmth, plus the warmth that Jay provides all on his own, here, on the cold hardwood floors of his apartment with no power to fuel the heater, I was already freezing. Bringing my hands to support me I wobbled into a point where I was able to use them to stabilize myself as I stood up. I took the few steps that put me back on the couch and slipped into blankets beside Jason. He opened his arm to envelop me which I was thankful for.
“The fuck?” he asked softly. “You were out for like 20 seconds how’re you this cold?” his voice was shocked as my skin came in contact with his, his arm that wrapped around me pulled me even closer.
“I freeze easy,” I mutter, snuggling back into him.
“Understatement of the year,” he laughed, still holding me tight.
A smile danced on my lips as we slowly fell asleep to the sound of the rain hitting the outside.
I felt warm and content as somebody began shaking me, cracking my eyes open slightly I notice I turned while I slept last night because now I was face to face with Jason’s chest. He was the one who was shaking me slightly.
“Morning, doll,” He whispered and my cheeks burned due to our proximity. “Sorry to wake you, but uh I’ve really gotta use the can…” he trailed and I realized how I was laying partially atop of him.
“Sorry, Jay,” I hummed sitting up slightly, wobbling on the end.
“Careful, don’t want you falling again,” he laughed holding onto my hips.
“C’mon you know gravity and I have a complicated relationship,” I joke standing up.
“Better than most,” he admitted standing and walking towards his bathroom, stretching as he went, and from here I could see how his back flexed as he stretched and my cheeks burned a bit brighter as I realized I was admiring a bit more than a friend should.
Shaking my head I walk to the kitchen and check the lights, they flicker on and I smiled at the simplicity of knowing the lights were once again working. I made myself a glass of water and as I walked back towards the couch the door was being knocked on. Setting the cup down I rushed to the door and opened it. In front of me was Dick, Tim, and Damian, they all had raised eyebrows at seeing me.
“G’morning boys,” I smile moving aside so they can all enter.
“Hey,” Dick hugged me coming in.
“I was about to cook some breakfast, you guys hungry?” I asked walking back to the kitchen.
“Always,” Tim smiled heading for Jay’s coffee machine.
“Doesn’t that t-shirt belong to Todd?” Damian asked suddenly and I nearly dropped the carton of eggs I pulled from the cooler that Jay had set up for perishables last night.
“Yes it does,” Jason called walking back into the room and spotting his brothers, also saving me from embarrassing myself anymore.
“I got this if you want to shower,” he said grabbing the eggs from me.
“M’kay,” I hummed walking off, ruffling Damian styled hair as I went, receiving a “tt” in response.
I walked into Jay’s room and opened the bottom drawer, pulling clothes that I’d left on numerous occasions. Before heading into the bathroom. I was in no rush but nor did I dilly dally as I went, I used Jay’s shampoo and then my conditioner, another item I had long since brought but Jay seemed to be the one who’d restock on it every now and again. As the shower shut off I could hear the boys in the kitchen.
“-she practically lives here!” you heard Dick argue.
“And?” Jay asked as if expecting more from his brother.
You paused, you knew they were talking about you. What other female lived in Jay’s apartment more than you did, nobody. Still, you held your breath curious about what they were discussing and how it concerned you, it probably wasn’t smart. To eavesdrop on them but then again you knew they were talking about you.
“And?” Tim questioned back. “And what? She’s just your best friend?” he mocked.
There it was, the topic was your relationship to Jay, it’s been something everybody’s been pushing. And there was something there, after years of being best friends after dealing with his death and then his return from the grave nobody in the world could compare in your heart to Jason Peter Todd.
“Don’t mock me, kid. And drop it okay, (y/n) and I, whatever we are. Best friends or something else it’s up to us. Me and her, everybody else can back the fuck off,” his voice was tense as if this were a reoccurring thing.
Babs, Steph, and Cass had all prodded me earlier this week asking about our relationship and now I could see his brothers were doing just as his sisters had with me. Shaking my head I ran a hand through my damp hair as I exited the room and walked back to the boys.
Breakfast was basic, Dick had come over, more to check on us than anything else. Both of Jason and mines phones had died last night and we had been unable to charge them. He had also been the one to drag Tim and Damian along. After we ate we lounged around his apartment. I talked animals with Damian, and a bit of politics and news with Tim as Dick and Jason sat at the kitchen island discussing something. Every now and again my eyes would flick to Jason, about an hour later Jason made eye contact with me and I sent him a small lazy lopsided smile, one that he returned.
His brothers left a bit after that and I began getting my stuff together, I had an evening event for work tonight that I had to go get ready for.
“Hey, where you going?” Jason asked as I picked my bag up around 3 in the afternoon.
“Home, I have a work thing later on,” I told him grabbing my jacket.
“What thing?”
“Some charity gala, I’m positive Bruce’ll be there,” I smile.
“Oh…” was all he said.
“See ya later Todd,” I bid him as he hugged me before I left.
A few hours later I was all decked out, a stunning (f/c) dress was wrapped around my figure paired with matching heels. My makeup was minimal as I so preferred it to be, my hair fell in big loose curls in a high ponytail with a few loose, face-framing curls. Stepping out of my car I flattened out my dress and gave myself a once over in the camera of my phone before slipping it in my clutch and heading to the elevator. Using my FOB I got up to the top and started doing some last minute touch-ups. Soon enough guests started to fill in and then the ballroom was packed. People were schmoozing other people out of checks and donations. I spotted Mr. Wayne early on but only was able to send him a smile and a wave before another cluster of people surrounded him.
Eventually, people had drifted apart and I was left alone, collapsing back at my table my hand went down to rub my ankles. The shoes I had chosen, while pretty, I was beginning to regret as my feet began to ache into pain.
“You know you could ditch the heels, doll,” A voice said sitting down beside me and a smile played on my lips, he was the only one who ever called me that.
“You know what they say, Jay. Beauty is pain and shit,” I laugh humorlessly while glaring at the shoes. “I thought you hated galas?” I ask looking back up to him.
“I do, especially when all the rats climb out of the sewer to slick back their hair with oil and try to schmooze money from each other with lies,” Jason's eyes narrowed as he scanned the crowd.
“Gee, thanks. It’s not like I spent months putting this together,” I sighed, slouching into my chair.
“But…” he trailed, gaining my attention once more. “I like you more than I hate these things,” he winked.
A smile came to my lips at this, bad boy Jason “I came back from hell” Todd came to gala because he liked me more. “So how long till you duck out and leave?” I smirk knowing he won't last long.
“Depends, how much of this shit do you still have to do?” he countered.
“I think I’m actually done, at least, until somebody calls for me to fix whatever crap they messed up,” I puffed, blowing one of the big curls out of my face.
“You’re done?” he repeated.
“Basically,” I smiled.
“Go on a date with me,” he said.
It wasn’t a question and it didn’t have to be, not at this point. At this point, the only ones who weren’t aware that Jay and I whatever we may be were more than friends, was Jay and me.
“Just like that?”
“What more do you need. I got you and you got me. Let’s go, right now. We can get some dinner and head back to my place for movie night, maybe dessert,” his eyebrows wiggled at the end and a loud laugh slipped passed my lips.
“Have you no shame, Mr. Todd?” I smiled.
“Not with you, doll,” he winked.
“Okay,” I nodded. “Let’s go.”
He stood up first and offered me his arm as we slowly slipped from the center of the room towards an exit.
“(Y/n)!” I heard someone shout and Jason stared at me as I stared into the crowd.
“Run,” I whispered pushing him, hastily, towards the exit.
“Woah, Woah, Woah. Wait, doll. You plus running in heels will only end badly,” he said stopping me.
One hand came up to his shoulder as the other slipped to my ankle and pulled the tie loose. Quickly I undid the other and as I let go of Jay I heard my name once more.
“Run,” He agreed to grab my hand and pulling me along.
We weaved through the remaining crowds before we got to the door. As we went through Bruce made eye contact with us before raising an eyebrow. My name was shouted once more and Bruce sent me “go,” as he stepped towards the source. I felt like a teenager all over again as Jay and I ran, we were a laughing mess as we stumbled into the elevator.
Catching our breath we faced each other Jay’s hand was still firmly grasping mine. Looking up into his eyes I found him staring at me. “Is this for real?” I asked watching him carefully.
“You and I have always been real, (y/n),” he muttered as a thumb brushed against my cheekbone.
“Is this date for real?” I restated.
“Yeah…” he whispered. “Yeah, it is.”
A smile broke my lips as the elevator dinged. We stepped out and I saw Jason’s bike, “Oh hell no,” I said stopping him.
“C’mon you’ve ridden on my bike before,” he teased.
“Not in an expensive dress,” I counter.
“I’ll pay for your dry cleaning,” he winked sitting down on the bike.
My teeth sunk into my bottom lip before I felt myself give in and get on behind him. He handed me his helmet and my arms wrapped around his torso, holding tight onto the edge of his tuxedo jacket. He didn’t have to ask and I didn’t have to offer where to go, we went where we always go. Maeve’s Dinner on 4th avenue, Miss M was the nicest lady you’d ever meet and her husband Joe was just as wonderful. Jay and I had stumbled into their dinner years ago when trying our best to avoid the rain that had suddenly started dumping.
Jason pulled up into a parking spot and together we walked in, the small bell ringing as Jay opened the door for me.
“I’ll be with-” Miss M began before catching sight of us. “Oh, you two, go ‘head your tables open,” she waved at us.
“Our table,” I mused aloud.
“Honestly, nobody eats here as much as we do. And we only ever eat right here, in this booth,” he smirked sliding across from me.
“True,” I laughed.
A few minutes later Miss M came by and gave Jay a beer and me an iced tea, the same thing we always ordered.
“Thank you, Miss M,” I smiled up to the kind old lady.
“Anything for you two sugars, I sent your orders in already, anything else?” she asked and Jay and I shared a look. We both had made our way through the entire menu together before deciding on what we like the best, it soon became our “usual”.
“Nah, I think we’re good,” Jay answered.
“Alrighty,” she laughed before walking off.
I turned back to Jason and saw he was once again staring at me, I could only stare back.
“(Y/n), you know I wasn’t trying to be demanding when I-” he began as if he owed me an explanation, but I cut him off.
I leaned across the table moving our drinks out of the way before grabbing his tie and pulling him closer.
“Just kiss me,” I whispered as we got close enough, and he did.
After everything the two of us had been through, after years of being in love with each other and years of simply being there, this was the only step left for us to take.
However, off by the kitchen counter, the two didn’t know but Joe and Maeve had watched the interaction, had seen the kiss.
“Lord at last,” Joe laughed, shaking his head.
“Hush, now baby. Let the sugars enjoy their moment,” She smiled at her husband. “And make ‘em a milkshake on the house.”
“Yes ma’am, what flavor?” he asked tapping the counter.
“For those two,” she began looking at the two twenty-something-year-olds. “Only chocolate would suffice.”
Sleepless (1/2)
Summary: Phil is at an all time low, when a new 24 hour coffee shop opens he's more than happy to stay the night there. While he's there, he meets the new night worker - Daniel. Phil needs a job. The coffee shop is hiring. But what about when unspoken feelings mix with sadness? And will it ever work between them? AO3 3491 Words Phil Lester was a somewhat self-proclaimed coffee addict. He needed coffee at absurd times, and only drank certain brands. He loved his coffee more than most things in life, and living directly near a coffee shop certainly helped feed his addiction. Being 19 with absolutely no idea what to do with his life wasn't fun, all his friends has glided into new lives, most going to uni in different parts of the country, and he was just stuck. His parents weren't fussed. Actually, he was glad he had such supportive parents, they knew his problem and they didn't pester him about going and getting a job or going to uni; he was pretty fortunate. But even the most lovely parents couldn't take the pressures of life off of his shoulders. It caused sleepless night after sleepless night, and the only thing Phil could do was go out and get a caffeine boost to ready him for the next day. He knew he looked like shit, he knew that the shadows under his eyes contrasted his pale skin so much that he looked ghostly, but he couldn't do a thing to change it. People commented about how bad he was looking, so he kept to going out at night.
There was rain lining the pavement on the way to the coffee house, but it didn't prevent Phil from making his way there. It had been shut for a few days as it needed more staff - Phil wouldn't be able to keep his composure around all the coffee so it was pointless him applying - and it was open again that night. Whoever was working was probably going to be moody, not that that was an issue for Phil, he never cared. To his surprise, the worker was about his age. The boy had curly brown hair; a prominent dimple on his cheek; and deep brown eyes, he was staring into space and didn't notice Phil standing in the doorway with rain dripping off of him until the door shut. The click seemed to bring him to life, he shot upright and looked directly at Phil. "Hi! We don't usually get people in at this time, what brings you here?" "I just needed some coffee." Phil held out a £5 note and the boy pushed his hand back. "It's on me. Are you okay?" He asked, eyes all over Phil as if he was trying to pick him apart. "I'm good, can I get an Americano please?" The boy didn't say anything else for a bit, he just shuffled over to the huge coffee machine and began making the drink. He had his back to Phil when he spoke next, "You don't seem okay. If you were, you wouldn't have come out in this." And as if on cue, a lighting bolt struck somewhere in the distance. "I'm Daniel, by the way. Everyone just calls me Dan." He smiled when handing over the mug of coffee, and something sparked inside of Phil. "I'm Phil." It was quite awkward, but what else could he have said? Phil nodded and took the mug of coffee to a booth near the window, he knew Dan was looking over at him. Something inside him wanted to gulp the coffee down and run for it, but when he noticed Dan staring into space again his heart skipped a beat slightly. Phil had never really fell in love before, and he told himself this isn't the time for it. Dan didn't even know him. It took Phil 45 minutes to finish his coffee and stand up, Dan was back to staring into space and tapping his nails on the counter. They weren't exactly short, but not long either, and they made a nice sound when they tapped on the black marble. Phil wondered what he was thinking about, and whether he was aware of his surroundings. Choosing not to disturb Dan, Phil stretched and left, leaving his mug on the table. When he briefly looked back inside, he saw Dan's bright eyes looking out at him, then he saw Dan giving a little wave. He nodded, then looked at the floor and went home, his family would all be tucked up in bed and wouldn't even care that he'd have gone out. Actually, they seemed to care less and less with each passing day. Phil collapsed into bed, hands shaking from the caffeine surge in his veins, and for the first time in forever he cried. He cried for his childhood, for his lost friends. He cried for his life, and lack of a plan. He cried because he was keeping so much of himself a secret from his family. The butterflies he felt when he was looking into the dammed eyes of the coffee shop worker, he never once got when he looked at a woman. Phil hated the shame, eventhough he knew that it was just a thing some people felt - he just wondered why it had to be him. His parents and brother thought they knew him inside out and upside down, but they talked about him getting a girlfriend when he joined them at the dinner table. Phil couldn't admit that it was never going to happen, not even to himself. Unknowingly, he dropped off to sleep in the early hours of the morning
.When he woke up it was nearly 10am, his parents had gone to work and it left him all alone. His eyes were sticky with unwiped tears and his head was clouded with a steady ache - whether that was from sleeping too much, exhaustion, or crying, he wasn't quiet sure. His curtains casted a green glow around his room with the sunlight behind them, there was a layer of dust on the rail and Phil couldn't remember the last time he opened his curtains. He didn't want the world to see him. He knew what everyone thought of him: a lonely, sad, childish 19 year old with no aspirations or want to stand on his own two feet. Although it looked that way, it wasn't like that at all. Phil was struggling. The world seemed too fast paced and it scared him, his friends had been so excited to leave and go off to university, and he had no idea what he wanted with his life. Every time he looked at university courses, they were overwhelmingly difficult to navigate and there were so many options. Asking for help scared him too. So Phil became caught up in a predicament. He wasn't lazy, just scared.
When his family started to arrive home at 6 PM, Phil had already eaten a stale slice of bread (no one had been to the supermarket yet, it was all he had) and some left over pizza so that he wouldn't have to socialise with anyone. His mum arrived home first, she was on the phone to someone and Phil strained his ears to hear what she said. "Yes Karen, I know I need to make him pay rent... He's my son, I don't want to turn him away!"He tensed up. Karen was his friend, Anna's, mum. Anna had gone off to study physiotherapy at uni, she hoped Phil would follow her and study English Language as he always wanted to. He'd lied to her and said he applied but he didn't get in. In actual fact, he didn't even apply - just photoshopped the letter Anna had sent a photo of acknowledging her application. Forging the rejection letter was too hard, so Phil pretended that he'd ripped it up out of pure anger and horrific shame. That's what caused Anna to come with bags of chocolates and sweets, coupled up with a few rental DVDs. Guilt ate Phil alive as he curled up on his bed with Anna, her eyes glued to the movie 'Love, Simon' as it played on TV. It would've been the perfect time to come out to her, but he missed it. That night, Anna left none the wiser. "Karen, leave it. Phil is loved here, job or no job, so drop the subject already." Phil was snapped out of his nostalgia to hear his mum abruptly put the phone down on her friend. She sighed after, and Phil swallowed his fear to go and see her. It had been a while since they'd spoken
."Mum?" He put his head around the door frame, tentatively checking if she was there. "Hello sweetie, are you okay?" Phil wanted to say no. He wanted to break down and cry to his mum about all that had happened in his mind, that he couldn't get out of an ever growing hole he was digging himself into. "Yeah, I'm good. Are you?" Idiot. "Of course. You didn't hear me on the phone did you? Oh Philly I'm so sorry, you know what she's like! Anna always used to complain about her when she visited and I can really see why. You're my son and I'm not forcing you to do anything in this state." "I know mum, I'm trying, I'm sorry." "I know you are, I'm here for you. I know you're going through some stuff right now, but I'm your mum and I'll support you no matter what." "Thanks mum..." It drifted into silence with neither of them knowing what to do next. Phil just gave a smile, nodded, then headed off back to his room. It was tiring to be around people, but it wasn't tiring to be around the boy from the coffee shop. Not that they had really met properly, and it was probably the caffeine surging through his veins.
Yet again, it was midnight and Phil couldn't switch his mind off. Why didn't he tell him own mother? He wanted to tell her that he was gay, and that he had no clue what he was doing with his life. She'd understand. His brother understood that Phil was gay, he just happen to look on his phone and saw a gallery of shirtless men - it made for an awkward conversation, Phil tried to attack Martyn to get him off of the subject. After they'd spoken, and Phil was all cried out, his brother hugged him close and reassured that he'd always be supportive. Then, Phil got onto another train of thought. The coffee shop boy. It wasn't a decision, more of an impulse, but he pulled a grey hoodie over his bare chest and left his tartan pyjama bottoms on to go and get himself some coffee. He didn't really want it, but Daniel would hopefully be working and it'd be a familiar face. All he wanted was a familiar face. He was sure.
The click of the door was partnered with a bell as Phil walked in, but he barely noticed it as he saw Daniel with a tear streaked face. "Dan? Why are you crying?" The professional nature of him was gone, he just stood behind the counter with his body shaking and heaving occasionally. He looked shockingly different to how Phil met him the night before; the boy who looked like such a dreamer had been torn down and stomped on until he was a crumpled heap on the floor. It really was the dramatic. "Hey, hey, it's okay." Phil bypassed the counter and went to the gap that acted as a door for the baristas, "I'm here." It wasn't a usual occurrence for Phil to initiate a hug between him and anyone, but an instinct took over and made him wrap his arms around Dan. When he felt Dan relax against his chest it was like they were naturally fitting together. "My family... I told them..." His voice was edged with pain, it was raspy and croaky all at once, "I told them that I like... like boys and girls. And they hate me. I hate me." "Is there anything else?" "Too much... For one, I love a guy who'd never give me the second glance." "Let's go have a seat."Phil let Daniel talk, and cry, but he'd worn himself out after an hour. "I'm really tired..." His voice trailed as his head lulled forward slightly. "Get some sleep, I'll man the fort." Phil gave a smile and patted Dan's curls as he passed by - they were as soft as he dreamed they would be, giving under the pads of his fingers. He didn't account for how difficult the coffee machine looked to work, it was red and spanned the length of an entire work surface, 4 tubes stuck out of the front and there was a grid to catch the waste underneath it all. A white, stained towel was folded neatly next to it and it clearly hadn't been used for the night. There was a poster lying on the stool that the baristas would sit at in slow times during the days. 'Night workers wanted, apply now!' Phil looked up at Daniel, he was sleeping sweetly on the brown loveseat with his feet tucked underneath a cream cushion. His chest rose and fell rhythmically and his lips were set in a little smile. He looked cute. Kind of. Kind of very cute. To work alongside him would be absolutely amazing, it'd be like a dream come true. That dream was within touching distance, it really really was.To see if the machines worked easily, Phil fixed him and Dan a coffee, just like he'd seen the baristas do it time and time again. He didn't plan for the steaming pipe to be so loud, so he cringed as it made a noise and jolted Dan awake. "Phil?" He rubbed his eyes to help him wake up more. "Sorry, I just wanted to see if I could do it." That made Dan sit upright quickly and grin at Phil - contradictory to his prior state. "You're thinking of applying here?! Oh, please!" "You think we'd work the same shifts?" "Yes! I know!" Within moments, Dan was next to Phil showing him how the machines worked and what each different drink needed. He grabbed the canister of squirty cream and used it on Phil's head, creating a swirl on his black hair. Phil let out a high pitched sound as it was happening, shaking chocolate powder over his uniform to try at deter Dan from messing up his hair even more. "Get off of me!" Phil yelled, trying to run from Dan, who had a firm grip on his arm and his hand in Phil's hair. "Stop rubbing it in!" They were both giggling and stumbling around, tripping over each others feet as they moved. Phil; he was actually happy, even so far as elated, in that moment.
As Phil walked Dan home, having waited until his shift had finished, it began to drizzle with rain. Dan took his apron from around his waist and held it up, holding one side of it over Phil's head and the other above his own until Phil took hold of the one side. "Soon, I won't have to do this, you'll have your own apron." Dan was grinning at Phil, the usually light morning was grey and gloomy so there was no one to hear him say it. "I'll put in a good word for you, obviously." "I'll call at 8, don't underestimate me." Phil returned his smile, it had been a while since he'd had such a good time with someone. "Shouldn't you get some sleep? You've been with me all night." "I don't sleep much." "Why?" "I'm sorry I better be going." It was blunt, but Phil panicked. He was a mess and Dan was never going to find out. Neither was he going to find out that Phil had fallen for him. Complicated, hurt and frightened, Phil wasn't much more than that in his eyes. Dan would run a mile if he saw the real Phil, but he was the best person Phil had ever met and he didn't to lose him. He felt slightly pathetic - he barely knew Dan yet he had become so attached, yet Phil felt Dan had a secret too. With time, maybe he'd know. There was a delightful surprise in Phil's pocket, Dan had scribbled down his phone number on a napkin while he was in the toilet, when they were playing he'd slipped it into the back pocket of Phil's jeans. Dan thought he was being sly, getting his hand pressed on Phil's ass, even if it was through fabric and paper, it still counted. Obviously. When he got home, Phil took his phone out of the back pocket of his jeans and heard a crinkling sound as he brought it out. He pulled a face, hoping it was nothing important, and took it out. Scanning over the napkin in his hand, a smile came over Phil. "Silly boy." He mused, then he sat down on his bed, taking his phone and adding the number to his contacts. There was one question Phil had: what did this mean? Just a few streets away, Dan flopped onto his duvet and let out a huge sigh. He kept checking his phone to see if Phil had possibly sent him a message, he even said he wouldn't be sleeping. He contemplated staying up to hear from his new friend, but sleep was dragging at his eyelids and shadowing him. When morning came, Dan woke up to a message from Phil: Nice one, leaving your number in my pocket :p I hope this doesn't wake you up.. It made him smile, Phil was an awkward guy and that was quite endearing. He looked over at his alarm clock, it read 7:37 and the message had been sent at 5:59. It made Dan feel a little bit guilty, Phil was probably scared of him not replying. I was too dead for u to ever wake me up. I hope ur sleepin, wait, I hope ur calling my manager. Their typing styles were quite different, Dan used more text-talk while Phil was much more refined. The reply came in within an instant. Phil: It's not 8 yet! Sorry I ran off yesterday, things are just difficult. Dan: Do u wanna talk? I'm on shift tonight, or u can come over, no one's here. or stay for a while, my family are gone for a week. When he pressed send, Dan instantly regretted it. Asking Phil to stay over was too eager, he'd just met the man and he had an awfully big crush on him. It was a bad idea. Phil wouldn't ever have eyes for Dan, he probably thought he was a stupid young kid who'd clung to him while he tried to get some coffee. Phil: I’d love to stay at yours.. When do you want me to come over?
An hour later, Phil was packing his backpack full of clothes and his toiletries for a few days. He was smiling to himself for the first time in forever, and it wasn't forced either. He was genuinely happy.
There was a harsh knock on the door. "Come in!" Phil called, his voice bright for once. "Hey Ph- Wait, what's going on?" It was his dad, his eyes were round as he looked at the rolled up clothes he was packing. "Are you leaving?" "I'm just going to stay with a friend for a few days, he lives a few streets away." "Have I met him? You never said." "No dad. Neither has mum, but he's just a friend." "Just a friend, eh?" It made Phil look at his dad, he was leaning up the door frame with his arms crossed. "Sure." "What's that supposed to mean?" "Karen told me that Anna knows something about you. And other men." Time froze. Anna wouldn't have done it maliciously, Phil knew her mum would often check her phone, so that's how Karen found out. "Let me leave." Phil said, his voice low, head bowed, as he grabbed his backpack off his bed. "I'll talk to mum later," "Not so fast. You need to talk to her now. Shes in a state." "I don't really care, just let me go." It was a lie, Phil really did care about his mum, he was just in a sheer frantic state. And that was when his mum appeared behind his dad. "Is it true Phil?" She pressed. "Yes. Now, I really need to go, Dan's waiting." "Who's Dan?" Great. He'd dropped himself in it with no easy way of getting out. Apart from one. "He's a coworker. Okay? He lives by the place, so he's showing me the ropes. I'm doing the night shifts, so to save me coming all the way back here he's letting me stay on his couch. So please, let me fucking leave." He pushed between his parents and jogged down the stairs, getting out the door quicker than he's ever done before. At least he had Dan.
I watch small animals and birds when I pass them by - Absolutely, and bigger animals too.
I drink herbal tea - Not really. More of a black tea kind of person.
I wake up to dawn - Not bloody likely.
the smell of dust is comforting - This reminds me of the Doctor Who quote “the smell of dust after rain”... which would indeed be a lovely smell, but since this one only says “dust”, and I don’t even (consciously) know how dust smells, I’m gonna give this a no.
I’m valued for being wise - Nah.
I meditate - No.
I find joy in learning new truths from the world around me - Yeah sure!
FIRE: I don’t have straight hair - I mean... define straight?? I don’t have much in the way of waves or curls, but most of the time there’s at least something curvy going on. It’s only completely straight when it’s depressed.
I play an organised sport - Hell no
I love the sound of a thunderstorm - !!!!
I want to travel the world - I want to want to, but I don’t want to..... if that makes sense
I re-watch kids’ shows out of nostalgia - Hell yeah I should get out my Darkwing Duck DVDs....
I see emotions in colors not words - I see emotions in emotions. Don’t know how else to describe it. I even see most other things in emotions, which is the reason I find it so hard to express myself in words xD
I enjoy doing the laundry - Actually yeah. Not always, but yeah.
I am vegetarian or vegan - Not strictly, no.
AETHER: I go without my makeup in daily life - Always. I just cannot stand the feeling of having something on my face, I’d be constantly at it with my fingers and smudge it all :/
I make my own artwork - (Sometimes I get lucky and accidentally make something that looks cool. I’d like to try more often.)
I keep on track of my tasks and time - Nnnn... kind of. Not enough.
I always know true north - Only when I’m at home.
I see beauty in everything - A true aspiration.
I can always smell flowers - What do you mean, always? This question is vaguely alarming
I smile at everyone I pass by - I don’t even look at everyone I pass by, I just walk and hope nobody notices me
I always fear history repeating itself - Yes, and on top of that I always fear that things that happened in fiction will happen or are happening for real.
I have recovered from a mental disorder - I... don’t know. For one thing I’m undiagnosed, and for another thing I can’t be sure if I truly recovered or if I’m just really happy right now.
I can love unconditionally - I hope so.
I’m tagging Everyone who wants to do it! And I apologise for ruining the formatting and for all the nonsense you’re gonna have to delete ‘xD
Gotham 04X20, ‘That Old Corpse’
This week: grave-robbing and presumed Jekyll and Hyde antics. This is Gotham.
- Episode hasn’t quite started yet, and I’m already wondering what the inevitable scene between Lee and Jim in the precinct is going to be like. Why doesn’t she just claim she was a hostage, anyways?
- Since the preview showed Ed burning the deeds, I do wonder how this is going to come back later. Logically, those weren’t the only copies of the deeds, but still…
- We open on some impromptu memorial service for Jerome. “Second time’s the charm” is actually a pretty good inscription for his headstone; I think he’d approve. A funeral-crasher shows up with a message: dig up the coffin.
- Oh, look, the Jim-Lee melodrama has arrived. “What can I do?” Oh, come on, Jim, don’t pretend you don’t think the law only works for the people you think it should.
- Why is Harvey the one pointing out that Lee’s robbery was semi-justifiable this week when it was Jim pointing out something similar last week about dirty banks while Harvey was being the hardass?
- Jim and Lee have it out; Lee’s strikes are clearly hitting home.
- A “present” from Jerome shows up. There’s a video. A VHS instead of a DVD, further obfuscating what time period this is supposed to be in. Jerome informs him some goons are heading for the precinct for a “wake”… just as they show up.
- Will Lee take advantage of the chaos to escape?
- A car shows up with Jerome’s casket.
- Back at the Narrows, Ed and Lee’s goons are discussing how to break Lee out. Their group seems to be on a collision course with the “mourners.”
- They’re using Jerome’s casket as a battering ram. That’s just absurd enough to be mildly hilarious. This show’s really at its best when it embraces three things. A) Camp. B) Black humor. C) General morbidity. When it embraces all of these things at once, you understand.
- Who wrote this episode, by the way? I haven’t seen enough to know if it’s halfway decent (and the inconsistencies in Jim and Harvey’s positions is a warning sign if ever I saw one), but it’s been decently well-paced so far. Is this another Ben McKenzie script?
- Jim’s plan is… I’m not a tactical genius, but it actually sounds okay.
- Bruce and Jeremiah are in their maze. I’m wondering when Mr. Hyde is going to come out to play and leave our Dr. Jekyll in the dark.
- Jeremiah is flipping through Jerome’s diary. Bruce looks appropriately disturbed and appropriately concerned. I hate he’s going to go over the edge so quickly, because he and Bruce have a fairly sweet dynamic.
- Alfred is heading around Wayne Manor with a gun, apparently having heard a disturbance, only to get ambushed off-screen. I’m assuming by Jerome’s people.
- Jeremiah tells Bruce about getting gassed. Well, I’m glad that for once the little communication issue of people refusing to tell other people vital information was side-stepped.
- Bruce suggests going to where Jerome’s buried to prove that he’s dead and give Jeremiah a little piece and mind. Boy, is that going to be an unpleasant experience.
- It’s Operation Unruly Clown in the precinct. Just before all hell breaks loose, Jim and Lee have one last little exchange. I wonder if Jim is at all affected by this.
- Lee gets knocked out. Oh, the drama. Oh, the half-baked drama that I’m sure won’t lead to glurgey EdxLee scenes later.
- Jim faces off against some of Jerome’s people in the locker room. Harvey and Harper ambush them, and Jim apparently decides to have a good old-fashioned fist fight with the head goon.
- Gotta say, now that I don’t care about what’s happening anymore, it’s a lot easier to just be Zen about all this. Like, the bad writing still irritates me, but I think it’s going to take a lot more for me to get properly angry.
- Is that… Is that a pool of blood in the kitchen? Wow, I actually feel a little sorry for Alfred.
- Jeremiah desperately wants to bolt out of the cemetery. He’s twitchy as hell, poor guy. I actually feel sorry for him, now; now that they’re being more upfront about the fact that he’s not well, it’s easier to sympathize with him.
- Jeremiah sees Jerome’s exhumed grave, screams “He’s alive!” and runs away. Honestly, that is probably the most sensible thing anyone’s ever done in the history of this show.
- Oswald tries to eat his lunch, only for Butch to be an asshole and steal his food straight off his plate. Butch… You radiate anti-sympathy waves. Why do you expect me to feel sorry for you?
- Why is Oswald reduced to robbing liquor stores for income? Doesn’t he have more resources than that?
- I’m just waiting for Ed and Co. to show up. Where are they?
- Oh, great, police brutality. Again.
- The little gag of rogues opening the back of the van while that one guy yells “X! We’re saved!” is kinda funny, I’ll admit. Especially when Oswald just motions for Butch to grab one of them.
- Lee wakes up in the precinct while the orgy’s going on. She’s probably concussed, so I wonder how well she’s gonna do. No charming your way out this situation when it’s all you can do not to fall over, throw up, and pass out.
- Jeremiah has apparently run into a crypt. Suddenly, I’m beginning to understand why people ship Batman and the Joker. …I never wanted to be in this position.
- Jeremiah seems to think Bruce… is Jerome. Given how paranoid he seems to be even at the best of times, I can actually buy this as being plausible.
- Back to the orgy. Ed Nygma is dressed as a clown, and we learn the casket is full of liquor bottles.
- Lee ambushes him and hits him with a can that makes a satisfyingly metallic clang. I laughed.
- Jim shows up at the maze. And seems to have no trouble navigating it without Jeremiah’s help, further giving the lie to the idea that he’s any kind of expert maze-builder.
- Jerome’s followers just left his body sitting out by the exhumed grave… and nobody noticed it until now??? What?????
- The harlequin from the opening scene has a gun to Jim’s head while he watches the video Jerome left… until someone reaches from off-screen and throttles him. That’s interesting.
- Is it Ecco under that mask? What’s her involvement with all this?
- It is Ecco. What’s with this?
- Jim turns his attention back to the window, where it turns out the throttling thing was just a theatrical thing. Back to proper programming.
- Jerome’s followers show up and separate Jeremiah and Bruce (Good thing, too; I doubt Bruce is skilled enough with headlock safety to keep from hurting him). The part where Jeremiah wipes his face with a handkerchief to show his now-naturally white skin is another homage to the 1989 Batman film; we’ve been seeing a lot of those this season, haven’t we? Well, I’ll give them this much; when it comes to other Batman homages, they’ve got decent taste.
- Cameron Monaghan’s great.
- I wonder if Jeremiah is going to be to Bruce in this continuity what Harvey Dent is to Bruce in the DCAU. It would make a fair amount of sense.
- The mask of madness, huh? Somehow, I doubt that very much.
- Jeremiah: “To truly build something, you must tear down what’s already there.”
- Jim’s left locked in the room with the overloading generators. And apparently they work pretty well as bombs.
- Just before the GCPD can storm the clinic, the first of the generators explodes. The one in the maze, apparently. How the fuck did Jim get out of the blast zone in time, because I seriously doubt this show has the guts to kill him—especially since we see him in promo shots for future episodes, apparently unharmed. The blast zone is supposed to have a radius of a mile (Jeremiah said you didn’t want to be anywhere within a mile of it), and there’s no way Jim could have gotten that far away in time. Also, I’d bet the explosion would be enough to make the ceiling collapse, so logically, he should be deader than disco.
- Bruce gets tossed in the grave with Jerome’s corpse. Christ, poor kid’s gonna have a stroke when he wakes up.
- Oswald is interrogating Jerome’s head goon.
- Butch, all you have to do to look normal is to get a spray-on tan and hair dye. I don’t feel remotely sorry for you.
- Oswald calls it a “tale of woe.” Bless you, Oswald.
- Glurgey EdxLee scene is glurgey. That is all.
- And cue the tear gas! Well, I guess that’s one way to break up an orgy.
- Ed and Lee watching those guys escaping down the fire escape is a decent scene, though.
- Last scene is Jeremiah at Wayne Research. With Ecco. Is anyone ever going to explain what the deal is with Ecco. And don’t just give me that “She’s Harley” crap and try to leave it there. I want an explanation that isn’t lazy. Why is she like this?
So I watched Fairy Musketeers
This is a magical girl anime aimed towards kids that was originally an OVA and got adapted into a full anime. The story is pretty simple, an evil witch from the magical world wants the power of keys. There's a key for the magical one, and the scientific one. The science one is in our world. This key is within our main character. The Fairy Musketeers must defeat the evil witch as well as protect the boy at all costs.
A fairly simple story to work with. A simple story like this needs to be driven by the characters. Aaand unfortunately the vast majority of the characters in this anime are written extremely poorly. Not all of them are completely bad, but none of them are good. (Except for Randaigo, my boy did nothing wrong). The only thing really carrying this show was it's really good world building. It feels like everything would have worked much better for a video game. The characters could fit in an RPG setting easily.
As the name suggests, a lot of this show is based on fairy tales. Only western ones too, I don't think there were any japanese inspirations for the characters. They were all based off of western folklore/fairy tales. It was really interesting to see which characters were based on what. Unfortunately, this is all dragged down by the characters being so bad.
A prime example of this is Ringo. She exists solely to be a childhood friend love interest for the main character. Otherwise, she is complete dead weight for the party. (She cooks I guess, that's it tho). They even address the topic of her being dead weight multiple times and yet still decide to do nothing with her character.
So the Fairy Musketeers are the magical girls of the story. They do most of the fighting and of course, do all the transformations. Although, these transformations are more like them just activating different magical abilities with a device called a Sweet Phone. As soon as I saw the Sweet Phone I knew I found a rabbit hole to dive in.
Y'see, the animation is being handled by Madhouse and Madhouse clearly phoned this in. The animation is done in a very lazy way just to fill the run-time for each episode. Why aren't they trying? I know these animators are amazing. Then I saw Konami's logo on the DVD and the pieces were coming together. Sweet Phones are activated with cards to use magical abilities. Yeah, trading cards. What does Konami make? Trading cards. (along with a ton of other stuff, but this is one of their main big ones). This anime is being made to advertise merch! It doesn't care about telling a good story or having good animation! It needs to sell that merch!
However, the anime did still need to wrap it up; you can't just end the show on a cliffhanger. There's no manga or light novel people can read for a full story after all. Luckily, I'd say the story pulls it together to tell a satisfying ending despite its flaws.
This got me real curious though. If the TV anime sucks and was trying to sell merch...what the heck was the OVA about? I don't usually watch OVA, but I had to make an exception for the sake of my curiosity. The OVA tells roughly the same story the first few episodes of the anime does, but the differences are a gut-punch and a half.
Sweet phone? Doesn't exist, they can just do the magic without it. Some characters are presented with way better conflicts than the ones they get in the anime. The world building makes more sense and doesn't open up any clear plotholes. As expected, the animation is much better, but it is an OVA. OVAs are much easier for animators to work with. The main character has actual character and emotions which he lacks immensely in the TV anime. If the anime kept what the OVA established there could have been a good story here! The potential here kills me and I'm convinced the anime is only the way it is because they must satisfy the higher-ups trying to sell toys.
Interestingly, the OVA ends with a link to a Konami website. This website is no longer up so I had to view it through archived means. Through this website I find out that, lo and behold, there is a video game! I knew the character designs and world were weird for an anime! Was the OVA made to advertise the game? Was Konami always planning to make this game and adapt it to an anime? Was the OVA just the initial interpretation of the game before it got changed to sell merch? Does the game have sweet phones? What even IS the game?
I had to keep digging. Something that really stood out to me when researching the show online is that there was very clearly a fanbase for the Fairy Musketeers. Was it because of the OVA? Was it the anime? Did people buy the merch? I had no idea, but a fanbase means the merch had an audience for a reason. The western fanbase lead me down a bunch of dead ends for the most part, not a game to be found. I did find some sprites dumped on sprites-resource from the game. This confirmed it to be a DS game.
Scowering japanese websites for more information unfortunately didn't get me anywhere outside of finding the OST of the OVA, TV anime, and the game (which they slap btw). I also found out about Drama CDs made for Fairy Musketeers. Wild. No game footage though.
I'm going to research this more, but for now I'll leave the rabbit hole here for this post. This is meant to be a review of the TV anime so my final thoughts are that it sucks, but has very interesting world building. The OVA is a very interesting watch and could have been cool as hell. I'm gonna go find out what the hell this game is.
