i do think that ruby developed a soft spot for sam when she was trying to manipulate him into breaking the final seal for lusifer. it was there, the human part of her carved out because of sam; and she so desperately wanted for him to see his potential and take on the throne as boy king, not for lusifer but for himself so that he can "understand his fullest potential" (misguided intentions, it does not excuse her). but when she "died" and was returned to hell once more, she was tortured, as all demons are when they return to hell. she was put back on the table, was forced to re-learn her place, before lusifer took her off the table, held her hand, and granted her a new rank amongst demons as a white eyed demon. since then, the tenderness and the softness that she held for the winchester has since been snuffed out, but there's a barely there ember in the hearth within her that still calls to sam.
