Sci-fi/Fantasy

Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb: This book is brutal in the best way. It is from the old-school brand of fantasy that starts with "I was born, and then it got worse." The main character is the bastard son of a prince, and he becomes an assassin both to serve his grandfather, but also to protect himself by becoming indispensable. There is a trend right now for sexy assassins in fantasy. I won't pretend I don't understand it, but it was so important to me that in this book every one of the main character's actions has weight. He isn't traipsing around playing cloak and dagger for the fun of it, he is trying to survive and find a place in the world. Every death in this book was important and emotional, and despite my general distaste for dark fantasy I am already reading the second book and have plans for the third. Recommended (unless you really can't stand animal death. I meant it when I said this is brutal.)

Rouge Protocol by Martha Wells: This is the third book in the Murderbot series. I was glad to see the return of the very tensely plotted sci-fi action we got in the first book, mixed with Murderbot's evolving feelings about itself and its relationship to humans. I read this in one sitting and am excited to see where Murderbot goes next. Recommended

Non-Fiction

Don't Call Me Princess by Peggy Orenstein: I picked this up because I've read almost all of her other books, so I figured I might as well. That was a bad call, because most of the essays here would go on to be expanded into her books, so there was little new ground here for me. Not Recommended (read Cinderella Ate My Daughter or Boys and Sex, instead.)

Unmask Alice by Rick Emerson: This book sets out to explain who actually wrote Go Ask Alice, how it became a smash hit, and why no one ever really bothered to fact-check it. The writing is incredibly immersive, and the story interesting, if deeply depressing. There actually isn't much mystery as to who the real author is, and more of the book is about the events which led to Jay's Journal (the "sequel" to Alice which was also portrayed as nonfiction) and how its popularity intersects with the rise of satanic panic. The book drags a bit when we are suddenly launched into "Jay's" biography, but it's worth it to understand how terribly Beatrice Sparks twisted real events for Jay's Journal. Recommended

Be Gay, Do Comics by The Nib: A very fun, eclectic collection of comics about the queer experience. The diversity of styles and opinions is very refreshing. Recommended

Anointing

Something to hold you guys over until the next pages. Anoint is fun to say.

OP, what?? Let me explain:

This was partly inspired by another comic, got me thinking of how anointing worked. People kinda do this too, stealing your partners jacket for example.

Anointing is when hedgehogs find a smell they like (in some cases a poison) and proceed to lick it and create a saliva foam before covering their spines in the smell/spit.

Scientists don't really understand it but it may have a role in removing parasites, mating behavior or something to do with predators. Free lore.

Mobian 'hogs do it too, but a little less messy...

A special oil in their quills is released as they rub their spines together and even non-hedgehogs mobians can smell it when up close. It's a way to broadcast their partnership, with some considering it a huge leap in a relationship. Many just kinda do it without thinking, as they cuddle.

What do they smell like? Im not joking:

If sonic smells like citrus and leather (official perfume) and shadow smells like lavender (also canon) and coffee (coffee because oils in the espresso beans he canonically eats), do you think they would smell like Lady Gray tea with a hint of smoke or a dark musk underneath?

So I wanted to draw Burn and then it occurred to me I could draw a comic of the first book prologue cuz that’s honestly when she’s at her coolest.

I’ve never really drawn comic panels before so sorry if it looks weird.

I’m genuinely surprised I finished it - it took like 20 hrs for some reason.

Fun fact! This was the real tipping point that made Edgeworth run away after AA1, they just couldn't show it on screen because they didn't have the rights to Chappell Roan's music <3

Maya: "Psst! Mr. Edgeworth! If you win your trial, can I show you Chappell Roan?

Miles: "What the hell, sure." Internally he thinks "Oh God I am going to jail"

A box saying "later" in the top corner of the next panel marks the passage of time.

The Judge smiles as he says "I declare you... Not Guilty!"

We see a full body shot of Maya dancing excitedly while Miles looks on, emotionless

Maya: YIPPEE omg you're going to LOVE this

Miles internally thinks "oh no, the consequences of my actions.

We see Miles standing in between Phoenix Wright and Maya looking apprehensive. Maya beams in excitement, while Nick puts a reassuring hand on Miles' shoulder

Miles: Alright, so what is this exactly?

Nick: She's a pop musician Maya really likes

Maya: You promised you'd let me show you, and it's legally binding because you said it in a court room!

Miles: That is not how the law works Ms. Fey

Maya: Shh just listen!

We see a panel of Miles' pensive face concentrating as he listens to "Hot to Go". He thinks to himself "hm".

Another panel zoomed in more. His pensive expression has grown more tense/confused as he listens to "Red Wine Supernova". he again thinks to himself "Hm" in a larger thought bubble.

We zoom out again to see Nick, Miles, and Maya standing together again. Miles stares forward blankly, eyebrows raised. Maya excitedly leans in.

Maya: Ok, that's her whole discography. So! What did you think?

Nick looks at him, waiting for his response

We get a panel of Miles, looking bewildered. He starts to speak "I..."

We cut again to see the three of them standing together.

Miles: I... don't think I like women?

Miles looks shocked and confused. Nick is bent over laughing, using a hand on Miles's shoulder to support himself. Maya looks outraged and appalled!

Maya: MR. EDGEWORTH! Just because you don' like her musi it doesn't give you an excuse to be sexist!

We see a panel of Miles looking stressed and confused. He leans his head on one of his hands, which messes up his hair, showing how he isn't his normal put together self.

Miles: I should rephrase that. What I mean is, Ms. Roan is clearly VERY assured in her feelings towards women. I was... unaware that anyone felt that strongly. I thought we all viewed these things with a vague sense of distaste and unease but collectively ignored it. Like how we do with climate change.

We zoom out again to see the three of them. Miles stands in the middle looking deeply uncomfortable and lost in thought, vibrating with unease. Nick and Maya exchange deeply concerned glances across from him.

With lingering unease, Miles begins to walk away.

Miles: Well, I should be going then. Goodnight.

Nick hesitantly raises a finger to point out an inaccuracy in that statement

Nick: It's four in the afternoon-

he gets interrupted by Miles who repeats firmly: I said Goodnight

Nick looks in the direction Miles walked off in.

Nick: ...He'll be ok, right?

Maya reassures him: Of cours Nick! I mean, what's the worst that can happen?

Jump cut to a closeup of Nick's hand holding Miles' letter which reads Miles Edgeworth chooses death in all caps. Then, below in smaller font, it says Also femininomenon was really good, thanks.

We see a panel of Nick glaring wordlessly at Maya as he holds the letter in his hand. Maya leans against the wall and looks away, whistling, trying to look innocent to avoid blame.

As a bonus, we also have a page that takes place a year later. Miles and Nick stand talking. Miles looks calmer now, and Nick smiles encouragingly.

Miles: In my time in Europe, I've been examining myself and my approach to law. Ultimately, the most important focus must be justice. We owe it to ourselves and to the people we serve

Nick: Wow, that's really inspiring Edgeworth. And, uh, hows the... the other thing going?

We get a zoomed in panel of Miles glaring menacingly at a suddenly nervous Nick

Jumping out again, Miles turns his back to Nick as he continues to talk

Miles: So as I was saying, justice is truly so important...

Nick nervously rubs the back of his neck wearing an awkward expression as he sweats nervously. He thinks to himself internally "Ooookay then, clearly still working through some things there"

Overthinking [QnA]

A question from Deviantart! I need to get those done first, been too long.

Shadow always felt like he'd be someone to get lost in his head, leading to him feeling isolated but also very self determined... It leads him to make confusing choices with poor communication.

Sonic is able to distract him in a productive way, and force him to broaden his thinking, even if it can be annoying. Remember, Shadow is from the ARK, he's much more sheltered than people give him credit for. He just assumes people won't understand--imagine his surprise when people start trying to support him. Likely a very confusing feeling.

I like to think he's more defensive because he's aware of that flaw. He can be too serious, but also apathetic in reaction to events, unsure what would be the right choice. He's trying to find a way to listen to his heart, his instincts, but not give into the parts of them that were damaged do to trauma.

It's a hard thing to navigate alone. Luckily he has a whole team behind him : )
