Fan Fic Tag Game 2020

Ao3 Name: dorypop

Fandoms: hm mostly the raven cycle but i’ve also written for all for the game, harry potter and avatar this year

1. Fic that was the hardest to write/you spent the most time on: skinny fleas. i started writing it before summer, but then i had trouble finding aurora’s voice, and then i started writing other stuff that came easier to me so i just kept procrastinating on this one. but it’s literally the only adam & aurora fic currently up on ao3 and i love the idea and the first 2k words, so i just had to write to be able to read it, you know? i had two weeks of leave from work in october and i spent them finishing wips, and even though i needed some more time after that for the finishing touches i really applied myself to this one.

2. Fic you spent the least time on/easiest to write:  the snow is melting (aftg). i honestly had the idea and started typing at a break at work and i didn’t bother to fix plot holes and stuff. i just wrote it in like two days and posted it and moved on with my life.

3. Longest Fic: i’m going to consider all 5 parts in my fifteen years later series as different fics, so it’ll be the miracle came with a pop (52379 words | hp). i didn’t write all that in 2020 but i did finish it this year so let’s say it counts.

4. Shortest Fic:  i don't want to screw this up (536 words | atla). it was a short ficlet born from a tumblr prompt.

5. Fic you were nervous to post: hm so i wrote a kinda quarantine/covid fic back in march and at first it was supposed to be this cute “and they were quarantined together” thing but then my brain started providing unhelpful info and the only way i found to deal with how scary everything felt was to write that. i then got a very angry anon comment which was probably my first ever anon hate? so i’m now a bit ashamed of that fic? but i’m not taking it down bc ao3 is an archive so it’ll stay there. plus i like the title (spring will be spring)

6. How do you choose your titles: oh boy. ok so in summer 2019 i started reading haiku poetry from a very pretty bilingual edition of poems by akutagawa. i just fell in love with the format bc it’s normally very visual and evocative but also super short, so my attention span doesn’t suffer. since then i’ve bought a few more books in the same collection and i dog-ear the pages of the poems that i like or that i think could work as titles while i read them. later, when looking for a title, i sit myself to think what the fic is about and browse those dog-eared poems in search of the perfect one. sometimes i’ll also google “spring+haiku” or something if i can’t find the perfect one. then i just choose a line from the poem. i know it’s a lot of work and probably nobody notices but! it makes me happy!

7. Fave Fic you read: oh i got so many! i bookmark all my fav finished fics

8. Fave Fic you wrote:  in vino veritas (drunk pynch). it looks really similar to what i was picturing in my mind.

9. Fave comment: i appreciate and love all my comments but i especially like the few i’ve got with requests/suggestions of things to possibly include in my fifteen years later series, bc then i get to plan around those things to maybe put them in the text and it’s super fun!

Ronan was probably as freaked out as Adam was, and Adam was here feeling sorry for himself and having a mild anxiety attack while Ronan was braving the fort downstairs. He should be supporting him instead, kissing away the wrinkle he always got between his eyebrows when he worried. This was all Adam’s idea to begin with.

12. What was your goal for your fics this year? Did you meet it?: i didn’t really have a goal? i wasn’t planning on writing so much this year actually! back in january i was only thinking i wanted to finish the miracle came with a pop and then never write long fic ever again, and i’ve mostly succeeded—i just need to think of the installments in my harvey series as separate fics, and i’m good to go!

13. What is your goal for your fics next year?: i have the idea for one more installment for harvey that i’m definitely going to write, and after that i think i might take a break for a while (but maybe i’ll get new ideas?? so i’ll never stop???)

14. Highlight of your fandom year: i’ve met really wonderful people through fandom this year. it’s been hellish and i’ve mostly fled every other social media/platform except from tumblr and ao3, so it’s really wonderful that i still want to come here and talk about fictional stuff

Highlight of your personal year: oh well it’s been quite bad? mostly due to covid, sure, but i also had some major things come up back in february and early march that were quite hard, and then i had to learn to live with constant changes of plans. i’ve redecorated my whole room though and it feels really welcoming and cozy so that’s a great thing 2020 has brought.

Warning for discussions of Nazism and lots of spoilers for JoJo rabbit.

Ok so I finished the movie and brains and emotions were all over the place so I decided to look through the tag to sort of wind down and ohhh boy goyim be clowning. My 2 main issues were that 1. They refused to see Captain klenzendorf as anything but perfect and 2. They kept quoting things imaginery Hitler said. Like yes he's imaginary but can we like consider who is speaking the quotes you put on your motivations and aesthetics blogs please? When a character says something don't you have to consider who is saying it and why? Idk... I'm most torn up about this.

So captain k rant. This movie takes place in 1945. The nazi regime began in 1920. The ridiculousness of the Nazis in the movie aren't far off. To them, all the other countries were controlled by the eviiiilll Jews. This was a war against Jews. (And a mission to eradicate other groups as well). Antisemitism is at the core of nazism. Anyone fighting for the Nazi party, especially a decorated military captain, would be aware that this was part of the fight. And the first time he really questioned it was what earliest 1944? So he's been fighting for at least 6 years and I'm being generous.

So what changes his mind? That he was personally screwed over. He was hurt. He was basically exiled from the front lines.

Here he gives up. He doesn't care. Then his passiveness causes serious injuries to a child (and also now he's probably completely obliterated by Rosie). Finally he uses his passiveness for some good, to save Elsa. But still, he's passive. His redemption is in his death. He actively saves JoJo.

He has to die, I'm sorry. His saving of one life does not negate the decades of work. He was a Nazi. He stopped believing in that ideology only when the country was clearly going to lose the war and only after he'd been personally screwed over.

That's my analysis of the character. But the fact that an officer in 1945 wears a signifier to show he doesn't agree with the party doesn't mean shit. He was a Nazi and his only redemption was in his death.

Sorry Tumblr gay men can be Nazis. Shock horror.

If anything his feelings for finkel probably became obvious only after he'd given up on the party. And even if he had been comfortable in his sexuality before YOU CAN STILL BE A NAZI.

I'm sorry he's not your perfect soft character. He is responsible for thousands of deaths at his hands and orders and millions by his own passiveness and apathy. It takes direct harm on him and the clear loss for the Nazis in sight for him to begin to change. He's not inherently good and soft guys I'm sorry...

So yeah that's my main thoughts on that.

Overall JoJo rabbit isn't a holocaust story. It has one Jewish character which makes sense because it's 1944-45 Germany. But the story is really focussed on the horrors of war, the absurdity of child soldiers, and the harsh realities of "victory" (I could ramble forever about the American soldiers).

I think this movie isnt really about Nazis. To me it was mainly about child soldiers and the harsh realities of life in a war state. Both topics which are extremely relevant today. But how much is really specific to Nazi Germany? There's only one Jewish character bc well it was 1945 Germany so that makes sense but the majority is focussed on the Hitler youth boy realising he's been indoctrinated. Him and yorki are hugely humanised so we can see the ridiculousness of child soldiers yet when the Americans (...) come they kill all the "soldiers" even the kids. Yes, kids were Nazis but these are what 10 year olds? Do they deserve this cold death?

Taika Waititi did wonders in showing the ridiculousness of Nazi ideology but the harsh realities of what it caused is glossed over and the harm characters caused is ignored. This movie is a beautiful fuck you to Hitler and a beautiful depiction of the lives of civilians in war but I don't think much would have changed if it took place in any other war, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But the reaction of people who can't handle them liking the Nazi characters and then missing the point in their humanisation by denying their Nazism is aggravating even though expected.

The contrast between the realism of it being set during WW2 and the mystical, fantasy-horror of Ophelia, merchant of death, extremis etc. You mix the fantastical so so well with the nitty gritty of war with the bad bad mental health of all included, the intrigue, the mystery of it kills me.

During a time of revolution and change and violence as they carry pieces (The significance of art here kills me) of people's soul to show that they existed! Lw reminds me of IM, the intensity of your writing and the pacing n layering makes it read like an epic (w one definitive goal but small stories dozens of layers). Woah, thank you! Never be sorry about long messages! God, yeah, I fucking love the contrast between realism and fantasy in LW and it’s why it’s pretty much my favourite AU. WWII is such a heavily explored topic that like...often lacks any real introspection into the human element of both the suffering and LIFE that occurred during it (with obvious exceptions - a lot of biographies get into it, as do Jewish authors, but by and large published works tend to focus on the military elements and sheer scale/horror of things in a way that reads as voyeuristic or oddly detached). I was reading a really great historical fantasy book that dealt with a post-WWII Europe that was being torn apart between Japan and Germany with these magical elements that really...idk, allowed the true humanism of events to shine through with symbolism and ideas that are easier to connect to than just sheer grit?? And then two months later I was thinking on Civil War and a bunch of Tony meta and techno-fantasy (Extremmmmiiiiiiisssssssss), then boom! Letter by the Water just took me over for a few months.  Tony being a child in it wasn’t even the original intent, but once the idea blindsided me I just couldn’t let it go. Getting back into those blurring lines between realism and fantasy, SO MANY children were involved in war in ways that are intensely difficult to grasp - in a way, they were all forced to become adults (either through work, through losing parents, or simply living under martial law). Tony being a living breathing symbol of that? Tony HATING that? It literally being a symbol of his regression? AHHHHHH. Genuinely an element that blew my mind and I never would have thought of if not for Guilt For Dreaming by Vetinari on AO3 (this fic has time travel Tony with like...a lot of genuine limitations of being a child and magical realism and oihdiuashjdnasjk - it’s a VERY GOOD Tony fic). Ophelia is his foil in so many ways and I absolutely adore her being a teenager - hanging just on the cusp of adulthood but never EVER making it there despite being (maybe) older than them all.  I find the Howlies endlessly fascinating and am really disappointed that Marvel never went further with them. They’re this mixed race, mixed country regiment with wildly different skillsets and that’s ???? so interesting? They are normal men (and women bc Peggy ALWAYS should’ve been more involved with them) who kept up with Captain America!!!! They literally represented no country (despite Steve’s hero name) and were just this symbol of liberation - screw the system, screw orders, screw WAITING for help to come. Bucky complicates their whole dynamic in such interesting ways if you assume people KNOW Hydra took a special interest in him or that he survived their experiments, which presumably people /do/ know. They would’ve given people on the frontlines SO MUCH to gossip about!!! This is what I mean about the human elements of WWII - people are people, and they are going to hunger for stories and heroes in times of strife. The thing about art in wartime is that it WAS a huge thing in WWII. Art was specifically targeted and destroyed (museums, libraries, religious symbols), it was specifically commissioned by oppressive powers (the Nazi uniform is a HUGE example of that, as are the flags), and it became symbolic of resistance and propaganda both! Art permeated the ghettos, with little homemade theatres putting on plays and tiny paper strips containing poetry no one would ever see in concentration camps or shipped out in furniture the original owners will never touch again. Art was such bittersweet resistance, allowed for contemplation on religion, both could (through destruction) and could not be taken away (through never ending creation)...ugh. It’s such a huge element of how humans express themselves when all else is taken away. Ghetto poetry was a massive inspiration for this, but then the idea of audio caught me by the goddamn throat and refused to let go once I was going through historical resources and rediscovered the story of the Cellist of Sarajevo.  LW is very much so meant to read like an epic (rather specifically the seafaring kind, because it deals so heavily in time and the unknown and blue blue blue). I’m really happy so many people FEEL that in it. It’s such a massive idea that I don’t know if I’ll ever actually be able to write it in full, though I certainly want to try. I’ll totally post the snippets eventually. My transition into proper adulthood just keeps stopping me from actually sitting down and just writing - what with going back to school, looking for a job, getting a job, moving across the country - it’s been a lot. But soon! I definitely want to go back to work on CBT and Charybdis.

(actually I did this in like November on my phone but only just now remembered that I never posted it so here ya go, this is all weeks old)

Okay so with the chapter titles, I didn’t actually start naming them until about ch27 or so, but I had already nicknamed this chapter something like “IT’S FRIENDSHIP YOU COWARDS” bc this one got a surprising amount of notes on tumblr and I’m 99% sure most of the people who read it did not realize that this is in fact a Kimax fic

And also THIS CHAPTER WAS THE TURNING POINT. I could either have kept the fic rly lighthearted until way near the end, or decide to start shoving in the Angst much quicker. 3 guesses what I picked >:D

omg, sTORY TIME. So, okay, around the 2010 era, I was huge into crossover fandom. More so, Supernatural and One Tree Hill crossover fandom. Yes, two shows that are complete polar opposites, but yO, IT WORKS, I SWEAR. Anyways, most importantly, the crossovers of Dean Winchester and Haley James, and Sam Winchester and Brooke Davis. Like I was hella obsessed in all honestly, *shrugs shoulders*. And there’s actually a really loyal following behind those ships, and they’re all hella talented af as well. I made a lot of graphics, manips, videos, have be it, myself, and I was actually looking to make a fansite. This is how I came across Tumblr, and I literally had no damn idea what the hell it was. I just thought it was a fansite making thing, although, I was just hella confused about it all. Because really, lbr, Tumblr is confusing for anyone new person. One day, some how, some way, I actually ended up in a Sophia Bush tag, or a crossover tag? I honestly don’t remember, and I came around a muse who was faced by Sophia Bush. My nosey has to see what the heck that was about, so I actually lurked on that page for a while, and still – hella confused. But I was familiar with the terms of rp-ing, because I was actually asked to rp a Dean Winchester for a second on another forum, and I did NOT like it. So, I was honestly under the impression that I was going to like it on here either. But for some reason I kept ending back up on that muse’s page, and then one day I was just like, screw it, I’ll check this out further, message the main, yada. This rp was actually a TVD/SPN/TSC crossover rp, and I really couldn’t break my focus from it. A few days later I’d have to message the main again, and the admins actually worked with me to come up with a character, who would be a Katie Cassidy FC named Avery. I was so hella nervous about coming into that rp, but man, once I did, I s2g I was hooked. Unfortunately, that closed two weeks later, but then I ended up following two of the mods of that RP to another solely TVD RP, and was there for a year and a half, give or take. This was, I believe, in 2012. So, going on seven years.

I want to sign up for health insurance but I'm not sure which company to go through as there are so many. I'm a 21 year old male with little income (about $1200 a month) with no dependents or job benefits. I went through the healthcare marketplace from the federal government which just said I need to get medicaid. I'm in the process of applying for medicaid as well. But if the medicaid doesn't work out or isn't very effective what is anyone's opinion on the best insurance company for me. I'm looking to spend only around $100 for a monthly premium. So i made a mistake. I was stopped last night and cited by a law enforcement officer for no proof of insurance. I had an idea that my insurance was no longer valid due to it overdrafting from my account when i had no money. so i contacted the insurance company and now they will NOT re-instate the insurance policy due to the fact that i have had two bad overdrafts with them. However now i am hearing im going to loose my license...... So i was told by the driver license department that if i go out now and get an SR22 qualifying insurance plan with a different company, that when i walk into the justice court payment window, they will not take away my license from me? however justice court states that my license will get taken away and i have to bring the proof of insurance to the DMV............and get my license back.
