i saw this tweet and found it interesting for two reasons. one is that some people base how good cartoon network would be to toh by how it treated su, and despite the fact that su’s treatment by the network was considered poor at the time, now its thought to be exceptionally good in comparison to modern shows.

two is how exactly su got impacted by a limited budget. a common criticism is how characters like connie, peridot, and lapis are left out of missions. but balancing a lot of characters is not only hard but also costly (extra animation, extra voices—it’s been revealed that the show is limited to a set number of characters per episode otherwise they’re over budget). animation mistakes are not uncommon since retakes cost extra. the entire reason the original show got cut short was due to loss of funding!

#i don’t know if pay rates differ per networks #but a.ivi and s.urrashu have said that they needed to work outside of su in order to make sufficient funds #it only makes me wonder what other ways su suffered from a lower budget #that we as the audience never got to see #in the vein of the too-little characters complaint #another part of that is that low-stakes episodes should’ve been abt the main cast instead of the townies #like last one out of beach city and too short to ride vs restaurant wars and kiki’s pizza delivery service #i definitely see that especially since that isn’t budget related #nor would it seem to be network related (even if cn had an ‘episodic episodes’ quota it could still be abt the gems #(another side note: /would/ cn even have a requirement that the show make episodes that can be watched standalone?#this is a question for the people who were around when su was airing #what episodes often got rerun?#was it the townie eps or the lore eps?#for example i heard that su once did a ‘peridot event’ where they just reran peridot episodes #which had eps that skip around in the show #did they even care about airing the story so that it made sense anyways?#id get it if the low stakes townie episodes were the ones getting rerun))#but i have such a boring view on that which is i think it’s simply because the creators like townie eps #like in interviews r.ebecca s.ugar has said she’s the type to be really invested in background characters #answers in interviews have been crafted in ways to hide what’s really going on though tbf #prime example of this is rebecca and ian saying the wedding being interrupted was meant to follow the common trope #when later in the art book they said that it was bc cn rejected the ep bc it ‘wasn’t interesting enough’#both could simultaneously be true! it’s a psychology thing though where people make up nice-sounding explanations behind what they create #in retrospect because they want it to be thought out in such a nice way they believe in it #the bigger problem is that not matter how many episodes there are of them #it can be hard for ppl to be invested in the townies the same way they are invested in the main cast #i’m sure that a million writers have made surefire advice on how to get an audience to care about characters #but off the top of my head i think it’s because 1. most don’t have strong motivations to get truly invested in #(exception is ronaldo but people find him too annoying to care about him)#okay i had more points and explanations but i hit the tag limit and idk if anyone is actually reading this so bye

I saw my thesis supervisor yesterday and I'm starting lab work next week!! I'm equal parts nervous and excited haha. I hope everything goes well.

Today in ochem I did distillation and extraction. People used to tell me ochem lab can be really boring bc there's a lot of waiting - I wish! In my case, "waiting" just means doing something else. 4h of walking around the lab and standing at the fume hood :')))) Sitting down for literally like five minutes to estimate the melting point of my sample turned into a blessing

my new character guy his whole deal is that he is a chill dude who lwk don’t gaf. Although you may not know him very much right now but he’ll find his way into your heart. JK vice.SER's just error but he fell into the void like a dumbass and now hes changed his strat ‼️‼️ of destroying the multiverse by trying to convince the creators. more to him but like i cannot be bothered. i low key changed errors character so bad that i dont know if anything about his old personality and motivations and stuff can fit into vice.SER's lore bit whatever he looks cool has cool motive has cool everything. maybe i wish he could be a bit more freaky cooking but i probably just havent added enough glitch effects.

#goddamnit im back to swapinverse posting again because of vice.SER #ANYWAYS time 4 design notes. the scarf extends eternally upwards ans can clip through walls and allat #bc error had puppeteer theme so i made vice.SER have puppet theme #and like we're the ones controlling him or whatever bullshit idk its cool #the glasses always show either static or space photos #the pure blue parts are supposed to show binary encoded messages. i forgot to do the eye #his arm looks all fucked up like that because he had to claw his way out of the void with determination and lord be dammed he leaves safely #bc its core frisk!error i incorporated color scheme and void shenanigans and a special timeline thingy #but since error isnt a human and doesnt have access to reset he has to use his geno remaining DT to claw out of the void #this fucks up his entire body and stuff. seperated fingers. geometric body parts. unusable eye #the jacket is supposed to look like its floating bc hes that cool bit its floating like its a low poly render in 3D #his eyes look so fucked up because he got to see the creators. he literally saw basically god so obvi his eye has to change #the blue one can only see things through code. people and places and allat are only displayed in code text #the binary on him on the pure blue ALWAYS has a message encoded. so ya #he literally got his code scattered and rearranged it himself while it was breaking and scattering against him #thats why his stuff has a binary theeeeme. also ofc to work with the monochrome color scheme #god i love making character designs :3333 #tricule rant #i should finish the BASIC CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS i have for swapinverse #cmon crash. cmon vice.ser. you two are the only ones i have unwritten yet #whys it always the glitchy ones that i struggle to get motivation to write for

Sometimes I feel guilty about focusing all on my recent svsss fics when I really want to continue my BG3 and ffxiv WIPs as well, but I've been in a strange headspace about ffxiv and its story (tl;dr.: I wasn't invested in the post-EW story at all so I mostly focused on raiding and that's about it, but it's fine, sometimes a little break is good for you) and whenever I want to continue my BG3 fic I realize that I still need to finish my Orpheus-route playthrough and then go do another as a refresher so the decisions in the fic make sense and honestly I'd rather play literally anything else so uh.

Yeah, those stories will live in my head for a while until I can find motivation to work on them again.

#shut up tc #it's not even that I haven't worked on the big Ansur as Tav fic at all lately #but it's all act 3 stuff where it all goes off the rails and doesn't really follow the game anymore #or post-game things that would make no sense without the whole epic disaster happening beforehand #so yeaaah #and my ffxiv stories are languishing bc my motivation to engage with the game's story has been really low #and I already told all my friends who would care all about these stories so why should I bother to write them down #for the five other people who would read them and then think they are stupid #so yeaah. that's a thing #anyway I really did fuck my enjoyment of bg3 by trying to do a cleric run that I enjoy uuuh not at all
