It's funny thinking about how Cats was regarded when it first came out in the 80s vs. how its viewed now. The aesthetic of Cats (at least to me) feels dreamily ageless and fantastical, not *from* any specific time period at all, but so much of it was built off of trends in the 70s/80s, like the usage of the then-popular arm/leg warmers for example. Or hell, how Tugger is supposed to be a Mick Jagger ripoff! It feels like an entirely different show in that mindset, like a pop culture thing rather than a strange fantasy story. I mean, could you imagine how different Cats would be if made in the modern day? Instead of a Mick Jagger cat you'd probably have a Taylor Swift cat or actually you know what post cancelled

you’re watching Cats 1998 for the first time, and so far it’s awful cute. there’s all these folks in kitty costumes with ears and whiskers - aww! and there’s been a song about how the cats get their names, and the pretty white cat did a dance, and then they sang a song about this older cat called Jennyanydots - lol these adorable names - and how she teaches mice to crochet. aaaw, that’s sweet. what a nice song. <3 what a nice musical this is. 

and then

like - the Rum Tum Tugger’s introduction is the point where Cats drops its comfy dressing gown to reveal its sequined knickers and lets you know exactly what you’re in for.

I only just noticed today that several people had asked about that UST5 video 🧍‍♂️😭

A few people asked about this one. It was marked as a US tour 5 performance in Anaheim California on December 19 2005 when I received it, but didn't come with any particular explanation why it's Like This. Seemingly all of the dancing is removed, and all of the dance solo parts (the Beetle's Tattoo, the Macavity fight, etc) are skipped entirely (You can see Deme and Bomba standing around at the start of the video- it transitions straight from 'Macavity's not there!' right into Misto's number).

Other boots from US tour 5 in this time period are as expected; one is even from a few months earlier (September 13) and includes everything it should. Despite being so... off, the audience is obviously into it. I don't know if it was some special showing or charity thing or what.

But anyways, because Misto doesn't have any choreography during his own song, that just leaves him and Tugger with nothing to do other than play gay chicken with each other.
