Voice actors are NOT the same as actors.

It takes a specific kind of skill-set and training to be able to warp and meld the voice. It takes a certain kind of talent and dedication to hone that talent into the ability to meld the voice and invoke emotion with one's voice alone. Actors are used to using their voice secondarily to their body language and their facial expressions. It's all mirrored back on camera. They do have nuance. But it's a different kind of nuance and a different kind of training to produce that nuance.

Voice actors might get their likeness transposed on their character's design, and maybe their mannerisms might seep into the character's animation. But when it's all said and done: their presence is in their voice. They are bringing a character to life, showing that emotion in their voice, trying to keep a specific accent, drawl, pitch, tone in that voice and keep it consistent for their recording sessions.

The voice actor is like a classically trained musician who can play first chair in a competitive, world-renown orchestra. The actor (who fills the voice actor's role) is like a moot who played violin in beginner and intermediate high school orchestra and thinks they can get into Juilliard with that 2-4 years of experience.

This doesn't mean that the HS orchestra moot can't play. They can even be really good at it. Maybe they won competitions and sat first chair. But they are not in the same league as the person who's been training their whole lives and lives and breathes to hone their craft using the instrument and all of the training they've ever acquired to perfect it. They are not meant for the same roles. They are not in the same caliber. You do not hire the HS equivalent when you want to play complex music in a competitive orchestra.

Actors are not the same as voice actors.

And furthermore, actors - especially big name actors - taking the roles of animated characters for big budget films or TV pilots makes no sense anyways when - at least in the case of TV pilots - there's not a point to hiring a big budget actors anyways. That money could be used elsewhere (like paying your animators), and the talent that is brought onto the screen for X character could then be hired on to voice said character no recasting required.

I wouldn't say voice acting as a profession is in danger exactly, but it's certainly being disrespected and overlooked for celebrity clout, and this has ALWAYS been an issue. Shoot, even Robin Williams knew that much - which is why he tried so hard not to be used as a marketing chess piece for Aladdin and got royally pissed off when it happened anyways. People shouldn't go to any movie (but especially not animated films) because "oh famous actor is in it". People should go because it's a good movie and the voice acting is good.

People who honest to god think that voice actors are replaceable because "oh well anyone can voice act" or "I like xyz celebrity so naturally it'll be good" ... Honestly I just wish you'd reassess your priorities because you're missing the point and are part of the problem.

Voice Actors ≠ Actors.

Hello guys!!!!! Aforementioned project is finally finished 🫠 It was meant to be just a simple weekend project, and ended up being 30+ hours over the period of like four days. I don't think I'm an actual normal human anymore. This is the project that caused everyone in my life to question my mental and physical wellbeing and health. Okay okay so. basically. the movie ninja are temporarily stuck in showverse, so the show ninja just kind of (slightly awkwardly bc they weren't expecting this AT ALL) take them in for the time being while looking for a way to send them back. we get to see the similarities and differences between the show and movie ninja, we get to see both groups reacting to each others' lore/lives ("you all still go to school? ew" "you all live together like a permanent sleepover? so cool!").

But also. When Ghost possessed Movie Cole. Movie Cole got a whole bunch of Show Cole's memories. They're all jumbled up and discombobulated, though, so for all that M!Cole knows more about his counterpart than any of the other ninja it's usually expressed in Sudden Realizations as the disconnected pieces click into place. Meanwhile, Show Cole kind of has Ghost and Corpse' memories, kind of, and Ghost was pretty much present the entire time he was in movieverse even if he couldn't be seen or heard for most of it (and did have a few episodes where he couldn't see or hear either), so Show Cole also has a weird amount of insight to his counterpart that he doesn't really actively realize he has. This leads to great interactions such as:

sorry I’ve been on such a Dabi high lately but I almost croaked earlier at the thought of being his college gf and just being so opposite of each other!!!!!! you’re all good grades and perfect attendance, easily approachable and sweet smiles. and he’s all grumpy faced and dark clothing, makes people nervous whenever he stands outside smoking right by the doors.

who the hell would’ve thought you two would end up together? it just didn’t make a lick of sense seeing you two from the outside. but when they get a glimpse of you guys together, alone, everything just falls into place.

he’s so supportive of everything you do, no matter how dumb or nerdy he thinks it is. he keeps count of your stitches for you when you crotchet, doesn’t mind being your model for a cropped hot pink sweater you’re creating, wears the knitted beanie around campus that you made for him. he hates not having your attention but he takes some of the same classes you take so that he can help you study, quiz you when you’re not too sure of the subject, maybe even help you cheat if you want (you don’t, but he always offers).

he buys you your favorite drink at the cafes and always carries an extra laptop charger in case you forget. he helps you pick out your outfits when you’re unsure, and loves the opposite aesthetic whenever you stand hand in hand with him. he praises you when you succeed, and comforts you with your failures. he looks like a dirtbag that hangs around campus to be a creepy bum, but he’s there for you through and through <3

working on my paper which will have an underpinning of the fact that criminal law is inherently unfair to women bc it was structured around men and their experiences and i just started reading a paper on that which started off by talking abt how when abigail adams wrote to john adams and asked him to not forget women when writing the constitution he wrote back to her saying “we know better than to repeal our masculine systems” which i think is so exemplary of the way that men still think to this day. even men who claim to be feminists or that they want “equality�� for women have a point in their heads where feminism is “going too far.” and that is bc underneath it all they WANT the system to continue to oppress women and uplift them bc it is to their benefit. to men feminism is abt giving women the illusion of equality and believing that they will be too dumb to recognize that their “masculine systems” still exist underneath the illusion. there is not a single man that doesn’t know better than to promote a feminism that actually seeks to structure society in a way that does not other women and cater to men. this is why you will see many men participate in liberal feminism (feminism that only seeks to gain women equality within the existing societal structures) while no men have been overtly involved in radical feminism (feminism that seeks to dismantle the existing structures and rebuild them to create a system where women are not oppressed). men are not allies to women and they never will be. they know better.

I can't imagine how weird/hard it must be for the Bishops to find Narinder again, just for his appearance to have been significantly reshaped by a faraway culture's customs and undoubtedly such a long time speaking only a faraway language having also reshaped his speech at least partially with an accent. Just this constant reminder in his very being that he's detached himself from the Faithful Lands with full commitment.

!! Gods yes, this is something I really want to play with (especially in the rewrite)- it's probably buried in the hundreds of things I've posted, but I shared a little comic some months back where Shamura straight up says Narinder isn't the person they remember anymore... and Narinder agrees, going so far as to say that the brother they knew is dead.

The language thing!! This is such a fun little detail you've mentioned because it's glossed over in DCHtS, but when Narinder met Wren he straight up says he hasn't spoken the Faithful language in a long time- in the 180ish years between learning the godless language and meeting Wren, he only spoke the godless language, and he and Wren transitioned fully to the godless language once Wren was comfortably fluent (to the point that their children don't even speak the Faithful language at all). So in the last 200 years, like maybe 5-7 years max has he spoken any amount of the Faithful language at all. His speech is definitely accented now, whenever he speaks the Faithful language... which is rarely, and inside the story it can be assumed he only speaks it when speaking to Lamb and the Bishops- and even then only when they're discussing something... sensitive.

He keeps his hair long, wears godless clothes and jewelry, and though he never quite lost his air of elegance learned during his time on top of the world he smiles and laughs so much more freely... he keeps his third eye closed 95% of the time (moreso bc it's heavily related to his magic in this AU than actually being used to see) and is more expressive with his body language... everything he is now is Godless Narinder. Dedicated farmer, doting father, loving husband, devoted leader (and yes, I'm using that language on purpose) and friendly (protective) neighbor Narinder. Even in the quietest moments, when it's just Narinder and the Bishops- when no one is speaking and there are no godless around them, just the five (six, including the Lamb) of them out in the wilds that could be anywhere.... they can't see the brother and god that once was.

... But then there are moments that their brother bleeds through and they know oh, this is my brother. Changed, like them, but still him. No longer The One Who Waits but always Narinder.
