Long Thread Shadow and Amy Rose. So with Sonic Movie 3 continuing the trend of Sega (or at the very less Sega of America) not giving a shit about Amy Rose, I’m gonna list all the shit she SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN, but was left out of

First off Every 90’s Dic Animated Cartoon (SatAM, AoStH and Underground), Amy around during each one of those productions yet she doesn’t show up, yet Tails and Knuckles both do, even tho A. She came out the same year as Tails and B. Showed up BEFORE Knuckles

Next would-be classic games collections minus Gems & Origins. Amy & her debut game Sonic CD for a long time was excluded from many of the Classic Collections, like Sonic Mega Collection, the DS collection & the Sonic's “Ultimate” Genesis Collection which had Archie & Spinball

Then we get to the modern era and oh boy this is fun. She’s in the 1st Sonic adventure as a playable character, all be it a Slow Character but still relevant, In SA2 she is not playable but has plot relevance, which I will get to later when talking about Movie 3

From there you have Heroes, Shadow, & 06. In Heroes she is a speed type like Sonic & Shadow, but can’t do ring dash or wall jumps & as many fans make clear she has the least popular group. Thank you, Shadow, for being So popular & taking Rouge from being apart of OG team Rose.

In Shadows game she is in 1 level & a cut scene at the end, even tho AMY was who got Shadow to be himself, Shadow Fans forget this. Tails & Knux who he has no history with get many. Heck Maria & Omega get more then Amy, despite being flat characters that exist to prop up Shadow

Next up 06, same before she in 1 level but gets 1 extra mission in the hub world. Whereas Shadow gets himself a whole campaign + vehicles, + his side characters get cooler gameplay than Amy. What does Amy get? Will she’s not long fast & for some reason can turn invisible. Clearly one of them got more attention during development. It also didn’t help Amy’s status as a love interest with Elise being there.

Now for the handheld games and it somehow gets worse for her. Dimps, the developers behind the Sonic Advance Trilogy + the Sonic rush Trilogy DID NOT LIKE AMY AT ALL! She gets to be the slow gimmick character in 1 & is not part of 2 but instead the hidden unlock you get the emeralds for.

In Rush, Dimps, makes Cream the Sidekick/Tails to Blaze even tho in the last game Amy & Cream where the female Sonic & Tails. They even write Amy as being abusive to Cream, A THING AMY WOULD NOT DO. Which is even dumber bc Marine shows up next game as the Tails to Blaze’s Sonic.

Now we have Sonic Battle, which does even less favors. Made by THQ (Not Sonic Team) you a cool Sonic fighting game, you let Amy form a Mother Child bond with a Robot, you give her some GODDAMN COOL ROCK LEE TRAINING WEIGHTS & Cream even says Amy is the strongest Women she knows.

But you have Amy starve herself for Sonic, not treat it seriously or for her friends to show concern. All her Attacks are Sonic driven, she thinks up a physical copy of Sonic to fight Rouge (which Fans use to say she is Crazy or Weaker than Rogue, both of them beat each up)

Finally in Handhelds is Sonic Rivals 1 &2 by Backbone Entertainment & Sega Studio USA. In 1 she is captured at the start ALONG WITH TAILS & saved at the end for Sonic to say he forgot about her & be creeped out by her. She’s not even in 2 so a good thing, can’t mess her up

We than get a period of time where Sonic games only have Sonic & Tails in them. So can’t mess her up like that (Unleashed is great for Her). In Sonic Forces while this point is minor, She along with Knuckles are leading the Resistance but Knux gets to be on the box & Amy doesn't

But I think the most damaging thing would be Sonic Mania. It makes itself out to be a celebration of all the things you loved about Classic Sonic from 1, 2, 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Knuckles Chaotix, Mean Bean Machine, Spinball and CD. But Amy somehow was not in any of it.

Hell I would say that Sonic Mania takes a good chunk from CD but no Amy. You get Amy Doll which explodes when it hugs you. (Get it the joke is that Amy is crazy & explosive and you don’t want her to hug you and should always run away from her ha ha so funny)

Fang Bean and Back get full sprites in Mania not Amy. Oh yeah and Mighty and Ray get to be playable but not Amy. There was even a hashtag for Amy to be added, only for Christin Whitehead or Sega to say - nah. (This is also why Origins and Superstars are better than Mania, Amy)

A pattern with all this is when people who aren’t Sonic Team write for Sonic, Amy usually gets the worst treatment (not to say she is the only 1, just the worst. Sonic X in Japanese is Great for Amy. But the English try & mess it up, but you still you get good stuff for her.

Not getting into Archie because if we are grading quality of how Amy is treated, that is dead last. PS Fleetway Amy Sweep and IDW Amy is Canon which I’m happy about.

This all to say and go back to my main point about Sonic Movie 3. I have like the Sonic movies so far, 2 was fantastic, but with the Knux show, the flaws showed to it & the movies. All of it is just marketing. The movie universe isn’t here to tell stories its here to sell stuff.

Wondering what I mean by this. So far the main Sonic character in the Sonic movie are Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow and Eggman. 4 being mobians & 1 human. When looking at the merchandise for Sonic as a whole you see it plan as day it is always Sonic Tails knuckles & Shadow. (Only recently has Amy been include but she still gets left out from time to time.)

Amy is supposed to be the fourth member of team Sonic, NOT Shadow. He not only has his own team he doesn’t even like Sonic, Knuckles or Tails. Hell straight up has a vendetta against Tails. But marketing keeps pushing them together

That’s what Sonic Movie 3 is MARKETING, not a story, bc if it was Amy would be in it already. Bc we have Sonic, Eggman, Echidna Tribe, Tails, Knux, Chaos Emeralds, Pac, Shadow, Maria, Gerald, GUN & no Amy. & Shadow Fans will say it is perfectly fine he needs all that screen time

I want to like Shadow, but he just sucks up any light from others. Rogue on Team Rose, no Fans want Shadow alive again, Amy Rose game? No Shadow Game. Other playable characters, no only Shadow. More Sonic Characters in a Sonic Movie? No, only characters tied to Shadow. But yeah

it's not any major sega console based on the controller, nor is it a major nintendo console and it doesn't match up with any major ataris so i got kinda stuck lol. whatever console it is, the color palette is definitely altered like the saturn so it's incredibly hard to google too. i'm assuming it's another 5th gen or something considering she has it with her saturn, but it doesn’t seem to match up to any more obscure ones I’m aware of.

sorry i genuinely can't believe how much of an asshole people are to Ian Flynn. like for everyone who’s not a huge sonic nerd like me who doesn’t know what’s going on, Ian Flynn is the head writer of the sonic comics (which’s he’s been doing for decades) and as of recently the games. and like, I don’t know Ian personally but from all I’ve heard and seen he’s just genuinely a dude really passionate about the stuff he works on who views them as worthy of respect and also views the fans as worthy of it too. like he’s not Perfect but he respects what he works on and tries his best. like he literally has a podcast and stuff you can listen to it he's a sonic fanboy through and through he adores the series so much. so like, completely inoffensive guy. he makes decisions I don’t like sometimes but like I’m not the whole world it’s fine.

anyway bc the new game came out with Very Minor Story Changes people are doing the whole “go woke go broke!” thing (which is stupid bc sonic has always been somewhat political it’s part of it's more edgy appeal like the stuff is like, not having amy be As affectionate towards sonic and not stuff like adventure 2 having sonic beat up cops if anything it’s not woke Enough) and they’ve started blaming the whole thing on ian and saying utterly horrible awful things about the guy. and again these are like! really minor changes! ones that were probably done bc of the criticisms generations got at launch! but bc knuckles makes a Different quippy line than he did a decade ago people are openly wishing for horrible stuff, calling for his country to be bombed and saying he’s worse than cancer and all sorts of sickening stuff. because he made extremely minor changes to a ten year old game. and that’s assuming the maximum amount of responsibility on his shoulder we don’t know how much was sega and how much was like, other people working on it? like ian flynn isn’t the only guy who works on the series??? it’s so fucked. i hope the guys ok he gets so much weird harassment for anything mildly different in sonic ever and he’s done literally nothing wrong ever as far as i can tell.

Story in the Castlevania Games

Buckle up this is a long one!

I understand that there is often a divide about which of the Castlevania game types are better (Classicvanias, Metroidvanias, and the 3Ds) but I think this is kind of shallow because they each offer a different perspective of style. 

Personally I love the Igarashi era because the first game I 100% completed was Symphony of the Night (I started with Super Castlevania on a SNES). I also connect with the style because I’m a terrible gamer and you can easily scrape through those (yes I went as mist throughout a lot of the inverted castle don’t @ me) as opposed to the classicvanias which make you pay for it (I like the tough concept and the reward, but I can’t tell you how many times I have screamed about falling off stairs). I haven't had a chance to play the 3Ds yet, but I have watched the Curse of Darkness cutscenes in 4K numerous times!

My own preferences aside, we all know that despite gameplay, every Castlevania game (the ones that follow the timeline, bc idk anything about the Lord of Shadows series) have the same simple plot with the sole purpose in defeating Dracula. And I sometimes see in the gaming community that their simplicity of plot is marked off as terrible and shallow. In a surface level view this can be true if you just play games to play games. But in regards to Ernest Hemingway’s Iceberg Theory that “emphasizes the idea that a writer should only reveal a small portion of the story, with the bulk of the meaning and emotion implied or hinted at”, the Castlevania games explore such deep concepts of love, human struggle, identity, gender roles, sexuality, good vs. evil, religion, and other philosophies. 

By having the same basic objective, the writers are able to explore the different avenues in going about the completion of the task of defeating Dracula and point to the ideas of what it means to be human. Some examples under the cut:

Symphony of the Night has the debate of how evil and even good can have radical ideology evident with Dracula obviously, but also in Richter who got so consumed with being the force of good he was manipulated by darkness. Thus Alucard, who is a product of both good and evil is the only one who can reinstate this balance and leave behind the quote from the Sega Saturn version, “However, you must never forget this: the one with the power to destroy this world is not him... Humans themselves possess this power.” The dialogue is actually good and complex in this game when you compare the different versions. 

CVIII: Dracula’s Curse is argued to have one of the hardest gameplays (outside of the original Japanese version) and couldn’t this have an impact on the fact Trevor Belmont and the gang are the first ones to take down Dracula? It had to have been hard for them to achieve such a feat! Also the different motives for all of the playable characters. Trevor and his family’s fealty to fighting the night and who was once Mathias Cronqvist. Grant Danasty who seeks revenge for getting temporarily turned into a monster and fights for his country’s safety. Alucard who wants to stop his father from tormenting humans. And Syfa Belnades who was a female magic user for the church in a time where that mysticism could be deadly, but was necessary to preserve humanity. I think Syfa is interesting in terms of hiding versus showing true identity (something Yoko Belnades eons later talks about). 

Curse of Darkness. Y’all this might be the most complete and obviously complex story (supplement material aside) that they have ever produced, yet it’s the one that’s the most sidelined. And for what?? Hector is an outstanding foil to Dracula even to the point of the goal is to use him as a vessel to resurrect Dracula. Like that is so interesting!! Even Isaac and Julia have great characterizations. If you want more stuff about this game, check out @beevean they have great content. 

My second favorite game, Aria of Sorrow explores how Soma is actually a reincarnation of Dracula and it’s a battle of the self, temptation, and his love for Mina that can defeat the evil within. Also Alucard’s change in terms of approaching the situation of defeating his father under the guise of Arikado Genya. Now that’s a can of worms right there.

Order of Ecclesia and the discourse of cults, Harmony of Dissonance regarding how the Belmonts are just as cursed as Dracula, friendship and more in CV: Bloodlines, Simon Belmont’s battle with outward and internal strength, Lament of Innocence and how the women are fridged for both good and evil, the list can go on.

Now I won’t say that every single Castlevania game achieves this well, most things are left to speculation and interpretation like deeper information of what happens between games and what the Belmont lineage canonically looks like. But the fact you can draw these intense and deep messages from pixels and gameplay is incredible!  

What may be my biggest frustration with Konami sidelining the Castlevania series is the potential of a complex story within a well-thought out gameplay and style. Grimoire of Souls may have failed with repetition and it being a gacha game, but the story was interesting because they explored what it looks like with the characters from different games comparing and contrasting themes. It shows that there are people in the writing room who still care about the games because of the story. But money seems to be the problem for Konami which is stupid because they would make bank with this game franchise imo

Anyways my real point here is that taking a minimalistic approach to the story-telling within a game isn’t a bad thing because there’s always going to be deeper meanings. Perhaps this is why I myself gravitate so much towards this series. For me it’s not always about how good I can get through a level or boss fight, but the subject of what speaks to the human soul.

TL;DR: don’t get hung up on what gameplay is better, pay attention to the fact that all the games share a simple plot in order to explore complex themes of humanity, saying that less is more.

live and learn (well yeah lol) (there’s the original sonic symphony on youtube still and i watched the livestream when it premiered and was vibing enjoying myself, like sonic music orchestrated this is peak but then we got to this song and i was fcking sobbing lmao)

knight of the wind (i like rock to orchestra instruments and this song made me realise that lol. banger theme to a banger game btw lol like i think every sonic fan once they join the online community has a game they’re shocked to hear the general consensus is that it sucked and this was mine lol. i’m glad everyone has come around to it lol)

my sweet passion (IM AN AMY STAN also!!!! her song is the vocal theme you actually have to sit down with to understand and that in itself shows how much depth her character has and i’m not joking when i say she’s the blueprint to all my favourite characters lol)

his world (i like different versions for different reasons but i listen to the og version the most. it really gets the epic vibe sonic 06 was going for and merges sonic’s rap/hiphop influences he was lowkey founded on and the rock music he was known for at the time. i digress but the music direction has shifted to edm so i’d be very curious if a sonic theme in the current era would also have edm 🤔)

i’m here (and like i already loved the og version but then they got kellin quinn to revamp the theme of the dlc that saved sonic frontiers’ ending and it’s just peak all around lmao)

sonic adventure (my go to album when i’m drawing actually lol. i wasn’t around for the og dreamcast drop so idk what marketing was like but since it’s the game that defined sonic’s transition into 3d (sorry if that phrasing activated a fight response lol) i like to think the snazzy jazzy sound the entire album has, which carries forward sonic’s 90s vibes he’s had in 2d as well, is like sonic team saying ‘welcome to sonic’s snazzy jazzy world like you’ve never seen before!!!’ and it’s nice lol)

sonic adventure 2 (i……… am an adventure era girlie lmao but like do you know how formative this soundtrack is for me lol???? sa2 took what sa1 had going for it and ramped it tf 🆙 like defined music genres for their characters and it reflects the music of stages they’re in too!!! i love the vocal stage songs!!!!! supporting me is THE boss fight song of all time!!!! rouge with the sexy spy music bc that’s her schtick!!!! knuckles was an og with character raps showing his thoughts and feelings lmao!!!!)

sonic frontiers (i’m pretty sure the final horizon soundtrack is the reason why sega was my most listened to artist and was my most listened to album last year lol. i made a playlist of those songs and inserted the vocal themes of the og game where the boss rush started iykyk lol. i don’t listen to the og soundtrack much but it’s incredible that each island has a theme they created 6-7 distinct versions of in the form of movements like what a masterpiece of an album)

And I don’t knock on younger headcanons bc we all have interpretations or some folks just prefer what old game manuals say, but I really hate the discomfort a lot of ppl show when people want to dare imagine them a little older (likely bc we’re older than we were when first becoming fans).

@blueblurbabe EXACTLY! Sonic is ‘cool’ and little kid me always associated cool characters with being automatically older than me. To 8 year old me, peak coolness was being in high school LOL. And in high school, it was college, and in college, it was ‘out in the real world’ etc etc. I was a kid when I first fell in love w this franchise, and it’s so extremely common and natural for us to want to see our childhood favorites grow up with us that I can’t help but think this bizarre pushback for any kind of aging or growth is fairly new to fandom. Like, anime is a big example of media ‘aging with the fanbase’ depending on the type of story.

Obviously I don’t think sega literally intends for sonic to be like, as old as the median fan age, but the interpretation shouldn’t be shot down because a 10 year old now non-canon game manual says otherwise. Yanno? I’m 26, I’m writing that hog to be around my age because I’m personally more interested in writing stories about characters that aren’t high school age anymore.
