I have a theory about Varric (spoilers for the ending of veilguard. Don't read unless you've finished!)

He's a mix of the Lighthouse projecting what Rook "needs" and Solas using blood magic to nudge Rook into believing he's still alive.

So every time someone else mentions Varric, or how they miss him or how he's dead or even maybe a funeral, Rook automatically forgets it. Solas' spell is one of confusion. One that enforces the "don't believe he's dead." And that's it. It doesn't affect Varric's actual speech. Solas isn't puppeteering Varric's dialogue.

However, the Lighthouse is. The Lighthouse gives its occupants the tools they need to survive/carry out their goals. And Rook needs Varric's support, in order to become the leader the team needs. Rook also needs Varric alive to speak to Solas more rationally and use the elf's information, because otherwise they'd be too angry to.

I think the Lighthouse uses a combination of Rook's memories (and Neve's and Harding's) to create an echo of Varric, while also using some knowledge from Solas (because Rook and Solas are connected through the ritual, and Solas used to live there too) to inform them of the red lyrium idol and any other info that it seems like Rook wouldn't have.

Though, it could be that Varric has actually mentioned the idol in the past to Rook, so Rook's subconscious is just explaining it again. (It makes sense with the story from Tevinter Nights, since Charter would have told Harding/Varric about what was said. And that Varric would have given this info to Rook in the past six months pre-Veilguard during their work together.)

But even this echo falters, because near the end it feels like Varric is just repeating the same notions over and over. They feel empty. This is when Rook is starting to realize they don't actually need Varric. Varric is only there as a comfort, and maybe he isn't there at all. (Hence the dialogue option, "I think I already knew deep down.")

Then why does Varric appear in the regret prison? I think it's the prison and Rook's subconscious (possibly Solas' too even) continuing to project it for them. And since the prison shows regrets, Varric is one of them. It's like Rook is speaking to a mirror of their subconscious, talking out what needs to be done.

So anyway, that's my theory, as I don't think Solas using Varric as a mouthpiece makes much sense. Please let me know if your theory differs.
