1. It’s overrated because:

- “Merlin and Gwaine had respect and affection for each other, but they were not close, their paths diverged, as seen in season five. If we reject the claim that this is bad writing, in: "Arthur's bane" Merlin didn't care too much about moving to Gwaine's rescue, and Gwaine didn't come back for him in Ismere. Nor did he do anything when Merlin was accused of poisoning Arthur. They were willing to help each other in certain situations, as in "Secret sharer" or "The diamond of the day," but I certainly wouldn't risk the popular claim that Gwaine would defy Arthur for Merlin. Merlin helped Gwaine find his place, and Gwaine actually became Arthur's knight, and their paths didn't cross much anymore.”

- “Gwaine is only friends with Merlin because Gwaine was a big pain in the ass for everyone around him. Merlin was there for him, but it was to help Arthur. (The Perilous Lands). Gwaine said he was going for Merlin, and not Arthur, but there wasn’t much shown to support that.”

- “They connected over not having dads when they were scrubbing boots for not paying the bar tab, but is there much more to their closeness, other than that?”

- “Once Gwaine became a knight, he was a knight. Merlin was a servant.” (Unlike Merlin and Lancelot)

I think losing Lancelot did end up causing more distance between Merlin and the knights in general. Like he was no longer there to help breach the gap of status between them. After he died Elyan treats Merlin the kindest.”

- “Merlin did not want to rescue knights from Ismere, and later they didn’t look for him. They all left Merlin behind plus Mordred knew he was hurt and where he was and still left him”

2. It’s NOT overrated because:

- After Gaius gets accused of sorcery and of running away Gwaine notices Merlin is upset and goes to check on him, he listens to Merlin even though Merlin was in a bad mood and is rude to him, he believes in Merlin and helps him.

- Gwaine helped Merlin and took him to the Crystal Cave even though Merlin didn't tell him why he needs that help and kept that secret from him.

- Gwaine had tears in his eyes as he and Merlin parted ways near the Crystal Cave, but I don’t know why.

- The show has really bad writing and lacks consistency, the characters can’t always be blamed for their actions.

These aren’t even all of the actions Merlin might’ve taken to change his destiny (or even actions that might’ve changed it for the better) but just the number I could fit on the poll 🥲

I am curious to see where everyone stands in terms of, which specific decision might’ve impacted the series the most.

The earlier the better? Or was it always mean for play out as it did, no matter what anyone did?
