Not a Book Friday

This animated movie was such a cool way to have the two original TV Bat family actors play their roles again. And, boy oh boy did it not shy away from the 1960s version of Batman and Robin at all.

Gotham City is threatened by the big four villains of that series, Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler, and the Joker. And, their plan has a wicked way that it’s going to change Batman himself.

It was hilarious, and all the characters were spot on. Not all the characters were voiced by the same actors as in the original of course, but, it was cool to hear Adam West and Burt Ward again though. And then there was the Aunt Harriet running gag. Every time it had me cracking up so hard. Hilarious!

Batman Return of the Caped Crusaders (2016) and vs Two-Face (2017)

Batman and Robin continue their fight against the villains of Gotham City, even when those villains turn out to be trusted friends.

 Although not exactly the same as previous Batman animation styles, this one feels like a cartoon that mixes with the style of the 60s TV series, it carries off the jokes well and looks appealingly colourful. The stories are also reminiscent of the original run and it was fun to see an array of the classic villains back.

 Egghead is made surprisingly prominent in both despite not actually getting any lines. Most of the clues left in each movie are solved by bizarre jumps of logic which must be an obvious gag that the writers can just cheat by getting from the answer to the clue in the oddest way possible. There are also big assumptions made, mainly by Batman, about the criminals’ mental states.

 The comedy works out pretty well at times, in particular the gags regarding the kinds of gadgets available and how far each side can think ahead. Also a few of the brief lines are enjoyable thanks to sneaky innuendo or just strangeness. The dance sequences are the end were a surprise but most welcome, as well as the new version of the theme.

 In the first film the conclusion depends heavily on a contingency that the corrupted Batmans should by rights also know about and plan for. In the second the various villains didn’t get as much individual attention and it’s not made clear what happens to Hugo Strange even though it’s predictable enough.

 Return of the Caped Crusaders: 6/10 -Just a cut above average-

 vs. Two-Face: 5/10 -Can’t find a better example of average-

 -The Batmobile engine sound effect is the same one used for the DeLorean in the Back to the Future movies.

-Harleen Quinzel appears briefly in the second movie, the character wasn’t created until 25 years after the 1966 Batman.

-Two-Face didn’t appear in the original series, similarly there were plans to include Poison Ivy but she was cut in the final result.

Batman: The Capped Crusader literally introduced my 4 favorite batkids in the same episode and made them all literally adoptable.

Realistically, I know in the next season, Bruce isn't gonna pop down to the orphanage and grab himself a Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Carrie Kelley AND Stephanie Brown (just two of them at the same time would fucking kill him) but also now I want a batman to have to contend with his 4 most feral children. And they are the most feral of them all.

Also before I begin can I just say I fucking love Jason and Carrie being the sameish age. For years, I have been convinced that if Carrie was in a mainstream universe, she should be Jason's age and that the two of them would be so close they'd basically be twins and this right here is so close it almost feels like vindication.

Now for why these 4 are the most feral batkids and why Bruce having to put up will all of them as Robin at the same time would fucking kill the man.

Richard "Dick" Grayson:

The man may be a genuine himbo but he is also the son of circus performers, so for as much light as there is in his soul there is also a gay wolf telling him to do backflips when he's bored, make puns at every opportunity, touch everything and generally be the most adorable menace you've ever met. Also, Discowing definitely counts as feral behavior.

Jason Peter Todd:

In this universe, Jason was probably put into the system after his stepmom ODed so chances are this isn't a steal-the-wheels-off-the-batmobile kinda Jason but could definitely still be a sneaks-out-of-the-house-to-hang-out-with-Catwoman-and-co or is babysat by prostitutes kind of Jason. (I know for a fact that last one literally happened at least once) Even if you take out the violence and crime, you can not convince me that this Jason is not the kind of kid who wouldn't constantly be getting into trouble because he's always trying to prove himself and eventually have a tragic dead at the hands of the Joker that when he's brought back leaves him jaded, angry and the beautiful problem child we all know and thirst after. Also, he's the only member of the family Alfred allows into the kitchen, so jot that down while you're at it.

Carrie Kelley:

My girl was created by the living curse that is Frank Miller that alone makes her feral. But if you don't know my girl Carrie in the Millerverse got saved from a mugger by batman and imitately decided "fuck pants and my drug addict hippie parents it's time to fight crime in green booty short with a fucking slingshot", was almost imitately begrudgingly taken in by batman, probably dropped out of school, fought a Joker who had suicide bomber child-sized android baby dolls and helped lead a literal underground war on crime with a pseudo-cult of batman themed vigilantes called the Sons of Batman formed by former gang members who became obsessed with the guy after he beat up their former leader a no-neck nipple studded punk humanculous who looks even worse than I'm describing. Every iteration of Carrie Kelley is forged from the mold of a girl who almost reached Logan living with wolves levels of feral behavior, she is insane and I love her.

Stephanie Brown:

Her father is literally bargain bin Riddler because he lost his job as a game show host and she got fucking refrigeratored by Black Mask only 2 months into being robin, she deserves to be a little feral. Every iteration of Steph is one with a right to live life to the fullest weither that means giving Bruce shit over his terrible parenting, memeing on c-list villians like kiteman or just hanging around being a menace this girl is feral. Good for her, good for her.

In summary, Batman: The Caped Crusader should end with Bruce's kids literally killing him off with stress, lmao. Also, the setting is perfect for making Dick Discowing, so DC take notes.

i finished gotham season 3! oh my goddd. oh my god i hate tv. ok i actually think that season finale was pretty good and tied up most of the plots pretty well but said plots were NOT it... this shows strengths are in its character moments, but the actual storyline that ties them together has never managed to hit for me. both the court of owls and tetch virus felt like plot devices that the writers could never decide on an actual threat level for, which led to a lack of genuine stakes most of the time.

i like that we're finally getting to a recognizably *batman* gotham, with most major characters finally getting into their personas, even if its in ways that i... am not a fan of. ivy being aged up through magic. tetch, end of sentence. the riddler hinging on whatever the fuck they were trying to do with isabella. also jeromes alive again which im happy about, monaghan does a good job as him. fish's death was anticlimactic as fuck though and her implementation into the plot couldve been done waaaay better both at the beginning and the end. no hopes for s4 im keeping my expectations underground
