4 A.M. - Sanji x Reader
Tumblr media
SUMMARY: Sanji's doing prep for the next day and you can't sleep which leads to a heartfelt and intimate encounter.
WORDCOUNT: ~ 1.5k
Enjoying my work? You can leave me a tip on Ko-Fi
It's around 4 A.M. when you get up from your hammock-turned-cot and decide to find something to do. Sleep clearly isn't coming. The past two hours of staring at the ceiling and swaying with the boat filled you with annoyance at your sudden case of insomnia.
Walking down the narrow corridor of the lower deck, you can hear the tiniest of creaks as the caravel floats along the waves. The night is so quiet, you can almost hear Luffy's snoring from his room. Usopp is mumbling in his sleep. Something about a pirate crew, carrots and onions. Nami and Zoro seem to be peaceful sleepers although with time you've learned that it's only a game of appearances - the thief and the hunter sleep with one eye open.
With each step, you can hear the repetitive sound more clearly. It's quick, separated by scraping.
The low light of the kitchen makes Sanji look almost inhuman, like the spirit of a chief cook who can't let go of the ship he had spent his entire life on. He's still in the same clothes, although the double-breasted jacket is nowhere in sight. The sleeves of his striped shirt are rolled halfway up his forearms. Where he's standing, the lonely lightbulb illuminates only half of his silhouette. The blond man toes the line of visibility as though he might disappear when you blink.
He looks almost divine.
"Can't sleep?" Sanji asks without looking away from the cutting board.
Only then, when he lets you know he's aware of your presence, do you realize you've been leaning against the doorframe and watching him for a good few minutes. Knowing Sanji, he won't think you odd but you're still a little flustered.
"Yeah. You?" you answer. In a few slow steps you're standing next to him, leaning your lower back against the kitchen counter.
For a moment, Sanji looks away from the cutting board and chopped carrots. His eyes stare into yours for a moment. It's nearly an inborn reflex that a wide smile curves his lips when he sees you.
"Not a fan of sleeping alone," he says and winks at you before going back to cutting vegetables.
The blush on your cheeks darkens a few shades (maybe he won't notice in the kitchen's twilight?). Truthfully, you have entertained that thought more than once and wondered whether similar fantasies kept him awake at night too. But you always dismissed them, thinking it wrong to have such intimate dreams regarding someone who might not even reciprocate your fondness. Sanji is, after all, a ladies' man - flowery words leave his mouth whenever a woman is around, no matter if she's taken or not interested.
Still, you believe there is something more between you and Sanji. Sometimes you think you've deluded yourself into believing this but it's moments like these, like the fond silence you're sharing now, that convince you it's not just your imagination:
Most of the time, the conversation between you and Sanji flows like a swift stream. But now, when the two of you are too tired to sleep, the silence is just as good. Even if you're not exchanging words and ambiguous comments, you feel understood. Like he knows you well enough to be able to guess what's on your mind. And you know what he might say in return, all the advice and wax poetic he revels in telling you. It's perfectly strange to converse with someone without saying a single word.
"Wanna see a trick?" you ask, breaking the silence.
Sanji is putting his chopped vegetables into large bowls. The movement of his hands is both careless and calculated as though he's letting his muscle memory take over the very last step of prepping ingredients for the next day's cooking. He's done this so many times, it's useless to think about the action too much.
"You trying to impress me, princess?" he asks in a low voice with a half-grin plastered on his face. The mischievous glint in his eye never quite seems to go away, especially when you're around.
"Nah," you answer, shaking your head, "just practising to show off in front of Zoro."
Sanji tries to pout but a genuine smile is tugging at the corners of his lips. "Cold."
Still, his eyes are glued to you. Though part of you is convinced it's not because you're about to show him a cheap fair trick. You take one of the teaspoons lying around and lift it in front of your face.
"You better not blink," you warn him.
He gives you a strange look.
"And lose precious few seconds of admiring you? Never."
Like most times, you're not sure how much of his sweet words you can believe.
With a quick move of wrists and fingers, you make the teaspoon disappear. After practising for a few days, the sleight of hand is almost flawless.
Sanji nods with appreciation.
“So you’re a magician, eh?” A low chuckle rumbles in his throat. “This explains how come you’ve bewitched me entirely.”
He leans on his arm against the edge of the counter. His head is slightly tilted as he's looking down at you. The lack of space between your bodies wouldn't raise an eyebrow in any other circumstances but now, when the night is dark and silent, the close proximity makes it hard to breathe. Your chests nervously rise and fall as you're breathing in each other's air.
“Truth be told," you begin in a slightly shaky voice, "I don’t know how to reverse the spell I put on you.”
But it seems as though Sanji has seen through your facade of humour and banter. The playful glint in his eyes mellows, becoming something more heartfelt. Your breath gets stuck in your throat and you must remind yourself to breathe.
“I’m quite content doting on you for the rest of my life."
You clench your jaw and look away for a moment. Flirty banter with Sanji is meant to remain just that - half-hearted comments with no strings attached. The problem is that, against your better judgement, you've been letting his wax poetic weigh down heavy on you, savouring each compliment and ambiguous remark like a soft river wearing down an unmovable boulder over time.
“Sanji," you whisper, "you need to stop saying all those nice things.”
“Why?” His voice is just as breathy and quiet.
“Because I’m starting to believe you.”
Something about his expression changes. You can't quite put a finger on it but Sanji's face looks softer, almost somber. His shoulders become tense as he wipes his hands on the dishrag hanging over his shoulder and tosses it on the countertop.
"Would that be so terrible, love?" Sanji drones his words. Part of you is convinced that he already knows the answer. "To believe that my every thought belongs to you?" His eyelids flutter as his gaze falls to your lips. "That I would tear out my own heart and bring it to you in my teeth if you asked for it?"
The short silence feels unbearable. You can hear your own heart thundering in your chest, beating at your ribcage to finally be freed. To let it make the decision this time.
“Alright, you’ve done it," you whisper more to yourself than to him.
You can hear Sanji sharply inhaling when you grab the collar of his elegant shirt and pull him into a feverish kiss. He tastes like cigarettes and spearmint chewing gum. His shirt is imbued with the smell of cooking oil. All of those strong aromas you've learned to associate with comfort and security.
His lips move against yours with passion and desperation known only to those who made friends with longing. Sanji places his hands around your waist, pulling you even closer to his body. If he could pull you just a little more, merge the two of you into one union, he wouldn't have to go a second without you.
Then, Sanji pulls just an inch away. His hot, heavy breath brushes against your cheeks. Swollen, red lips look even more enticing than they did before.
"Are you really going to woo Zoro with a magic trick?" he asks, somewhat tense.
Your laughter brightens up the dead of night. Sanji feels like his chest is about to burst open with flowers blooming inside his ribcage where his heart should be. And it would have been if he hadn't given it to you the moment you met.
"Just shut up."
Shaking your head, you kiss him again. Still holding you close, Sanji pushes you against the kitchen counter. One of his hands leaves your waist only to rest against the side of your head to deepen the kiss.
It's around 4 A.M. when you wonder whether being in love is like having a song stuck in your head. Or like an echo that forever repeats a single name.

Tumblr media
Lennox woke with a pounding in her head and the overwhelming urge to vomit. Groaning, she rolled over, checking her phone before stumbling into her bathroom.
As she hugged the toilet bowl, flashes of her argument with Rafe came back to her. Calling him an asshole, cruel, a black hole—God she felt horrible. Lennox couldn’t believe she unloaded on him like that, even if he deserved it. She was a very non-confrontational person, and she hated hurting people’s feelings. No matter who they were. That being said, he was a smug son of a bitch. Ordering her around, calling her princess all the time…he just got under her skin. No person had ever been able to do that as much as Rafe Cameron.
Once she had successfully emptied her stomach and scraped herself off the tile, she slowly descended the stairs and made her way to the kitchen. Her entire family was there, Dad making breakfast as Mom and Topper talked at the bar. Topper noticed her first.
“Len! You look rough, is the hangover that bad?” he teased, causing her to stick her tongue out at him. She decided not to comment on his own drunkenness the night before, so he wasn’t ripped a new one by their mom.
“Have some juice, honey,” her mom slipped a cup into her hand, patting her on the shoulder affectionately. Lennox took a satisfying sip, letting the cold liquid soothe her dry throat.
“Thanks, Mom.”
“Breakfast is ready!” Dad sang, moving platters from the counter to their dining room table. Lennox flinched at the sudden increase in volume, caressing her head, but slid into her spot at the table with ease. It was overflowing with food, way too much for the four of them, but that was her dad. As they gathered to eat as a family, her dad decided to strike up a conversation about business.
“Oh, by the way, Lennox. Rafe Cameron is going to be stopping by later to discuss a potential collaboration on a property.” She immediately choked on her orange juice, causing a coughing fit. Her mom instinctively started to rub her back, a worried look on her face.
“What?” she croaked, rubbing her throat and wiping the water from her eyes.
“Yes, and I think this is the perfect project for you to take the lead on, seeing as you’re both lacking a lot of experience.” She looked at her mom and Topper, trying to decipher whether or not this was a prank. Topper was trying not to laugh, and her mom looked sympathetic. Shit.
“Dad, no! I cannot work with Rafe, it’s like asking me to work with…with…I don’t know but it’s not going to work!” She couldn’t believe this was happening; she was expected to work with public enemy number one.
“Oh quit being a drama queen. You’ll be fine,” he waved her off, cutting into his pancakes as if nothing was happening.
“But–”
“No buts!” he raised his voice. Lennox shrunk down immediately at his tone. “You will work with the boy, and it’ll be great!” Dad smiled. Lennox groaned before stuffing her mouth full of pancakes. This would not be great.

Lennox’s glare must have had some heat to it, because Rafe just made eye contact through her second story bedroom window.
As he sauntered to her front door she couldn't help but notice how nice he looked. He put on an actual suit for the meeting, save for a tie, and carried a briefcase. Still looked like a douche though.
Lennox took a deep breath before checking her appearance one more time. Her brown hair was curled, pulled back by two braids. She put on some light makeup and a business suit, trying to make a good first impression with her dad. He was always business business business when it came to things like this. In the meeting, she wouldn’t be his daughter, she’d be his associate.
Lennox exited her room and made her way down the stairs slowly. They were waiting for her at the bottom, her dad having already welcomed Rafe. By the amount of hand motions he was making, she assumed her dad was engaged in a passionate conversation about work. Rafe didn’t seem to be paying that much attention.
His eyes never left her as she slowly approached, smirking at how uncomfortable she looked. The sound of her heels on the hardwood floor gave her away, and her dad finally heard her behind him.
“Ah! Lennox, come welcome Mr. Cameron.”
“Oh, Rafe will do just fine, Mr. Thornton,” his deep voice rasped, eyes flicking over her. She suddenly felt self conscious in her cranberry suit, wishing she’d worn something less…form fitting. Dad didn’t notice, just chuckled and clapped Rafe on the back.
“Well then, call me Jack!” Lennox rolled her eyes, already hating the camaraderie forming between the two.
“Lennox!” he whispered sharply at her, the smile remaining on his face. She begrudgingly stepped forward, offering her hand with a strained smile.
“Mr. Cameron, lovely to have you!” Her hand slipped into his easily, and she felt the warmth that radiated from it throughout her entire body. Their eyes met and she felt a fire in her stomach.
Loathing. That’s what this was. Pure unadulterated loathing.
“Lovely to see you again, Princess.” Lennox’s mouth gaped in response, looking over to her father for help. The man simply looked confused and happy to be there.
She wondered how he got away with things like that.
“If you don’t mind, can we take this meeting in the sitting room?” she said through bared teeth. He really was going to make her lose her mind.
“Of course,” he bowed his head a bit, clasping his hands behind his back. She didn’t particularly want to walk in front of him, but swallowed her pride, leading them through the house. When they arrived, she took a seat at the head of the table, gesturing the chair directly to her left. Her dad hovered in the doorway, watching her like a hawk.
“Alright, I’ve briefed Lennox on everything we’ve discussed, Rafe, and I feel confident she can take over from here if that’s alright with you?” Rafe barely turned his head, eyes directed towards her, and replied.
“That sounds perfect, Jack, thank you.” Dad nodded and sent her a wink before closing the door behind him, leaving the two of them alone. The silence was heavy, and Lennox knew she’d have to talk eventually, but she just couldn’t. Thankfully he made the first move.
“You’re not still mad about last night, are you? Or do you even remember it?” She scoffed, unamused.
“Please, I wasn’t that drunk.”
“Sure, Princess, whatever you need to tell yourself.”
“Whatever, let’s just get this over with.”
“Alright, calm down, I’ve got the whole thing planned out. It’ll be fun.” Rafe popped open his briefcase and pulled out a manila folder, flipped it open, and slid it towards her.
“Fun? Yeah, working with you sounds like a dream come true,” she said with crossed arms. Rafe smirked, but ignored her.
“It’s a resort. Beachfront, private, exclusive—exactly what the OBX needs. I inherited the land after my dad… well, you know.” His expression flickered for a moment, but he covered it quickly, flipping through the pages. “Your family’s real estate empire handles the logistics, and I’ll manage the operations and design.”
“Wait,” Lennox held up a hand, “You’re managing the design?”
“Don’t sound so surprised,” he chuckled, “I’m actually good at this sort of thing. You’d know if you hopped off that high horse of yours.”
She ignored the jab, leaning over the table to glance at the blueprints he laid out. To her annoyance, the concept wasn’t terrible. The resort was sleek, modern, and perfectly tailored for high-end clients. She could almost see it working—almost.
“This isn’t bad,” she admitted reluctantly, tapping the page. “But the infrastructure on this stretch of land is a nightmare. It’s going to cost a fortune to get it up to code.”
Rafe shrugged, leaning back in his chair. “That’s your problem, isn’t it? Logistics. I’m here to make it look good.”
Lennox rolled her eyes. “Of course you are. You just want your name attached to it without doing the actual work.”
“Hey, I’m doing plenty of work,” Rafe shot back, sitting up straight. “Just because you’re too busy judging me doesn’t mean I don’t know what I’m doing.”
Her frustration boiled over. “Judging you? Rafe, you’ve made it impossible not to judge you. Forgive me for not thinking this is suddenly your redemption arc.”
His jaw tightened, and for a second, the mask slipped. “You don’t know shit about what I’ve been dealing with, Lennox. I’m trying to clean up the mess my dad left behind. This project? It’s the first thing that’s actually mine. So yeah, I care about it.”
The sincerity in his voice caught her off guard, and she hated herself for even slightly softening. She shifted in her seat, clearing her throat. “Fine. But if we’re going to work together, there’s no room for your usual bullshit. This has to be professional.”
Rafe smirked again, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Whatever you say, Princess. Let’s see if you can keep up.”
Lennox pressed her palms flat against the table, inhaling deeply. She wasn’t going to let Rafe Cameron rile her up again. Not this time.
“Alright,” she said briskly, gathering the blueprints into a neat pile. “We’ll need to tour the site first. I’ll need updated infrastructure reports, environmental impact assessments, and a list of contractors you’ve already reached out to.”
Rafe let out a low whistle. “Wow, thorough. You’ve really got this ‘boss lady’ thing down, huh?”
“Or,” she countered, “I just know how to handle things without half-assing them.”
“Lucky me, I guess. The site’s about twenty minutes out. Let’s go.”
Lennox froze. “Go? Now?”
“No time like the present, Princess,” he said, already rising from his chair and tossing her the keys to his Jeep. She caught them clumsily, glaring.
“You expect me to drive your car?”
“You’re the expert, remember?” He grinned. “I’m the ideas guy.”
“You’re insufferable.”
“Charming, though,” he quipped, grabbing the blueprints and heading for the door. “Come on, Princess. Daylight’s burning.”
God, she hated him.
⋆ ˚。 ⋆୨♡୧⋆ ˚。 ⋆
When they arrived at the property, Lennox was pleasantly surprised. It looked exactly like the pictures. The land was stunning—untouched dunes rolling into sparkling waves, with thick greenery framing the shoreline. For a moment, Lennox forgot about Rafe entirely. She stepped forward, her heels sinking slightly into the sand, and took it all in.
“Okay,” she admitted reluctantly. “It’s beautiful.”
“See? I’m not completely useless,” Rafe said, striding up beside her, hands in his pockets. “This place has potential. High-end suites here, a private marina there...”
She raised an eyebrow. “Ambitious.”
“What can I say, I’ve got big ideas…and deep pockets.” Lennox rolled her eyes.
“Alright hotshot, let’s walk around.” He nodded and took the lead. She paused to slip off her shoes before catching up. They start making their way down the coastline, Rafe pointing out specifics of his design as they did. She really did hate to admit it, but he was good at this.
“You’ve really thought this through…” He turned and squinted at her, having to raise his hand to shield his eyes from the sun.
“Yeah, I’m not dicking around here, Lennox. This isn’t me playing dress up, trying on Daddy’s shoes for fun.” She opened her mouth to fire back, but something in his tone stopped her. She looked at him—really looked—and for the first time she saw something she almost pitied.
“Rafe–” she started, but he cut her off.
“Just don’t.” He turned away, his usual smirk back in place. “I already told you I don’t do therapy sessions, Princess.”
“But–”
“You’re the one that said stick to business, alright? Let’s do that.” He left no room for argument, so Lennox shut up. The pair walked back towards his Jeep in silence, Lennox focusing on the waves rushing over her feet. She’d never felt this awkward around him; pissed, sure, but awkwardness was new. When they made it back, Rafe spoke quietly.
“What’d you think?” She fought for a critique, but it never surfaced.
“Honestly? I think it’s perfect. We’d be stupid not to partner with you.” His face lit up, smile crinkling the corners of his eyes, and for some reason that caused her stomach to flip.
“Really?” The excitement in his voice was evident even if he tried to keep it down.
“Yeah. I hate to say it, but you’ve got yourself a deal.” Lennox held out her hand and he took it with ease.
“So I guess we’re partners now,” he smirked.
“If this is what I’ll have to deal with everyday, I need a raise.”
“Careful, Princess. You might end up liking me.”
“Doubtful,” she replied, but there was no real malice behind it. He had caught her off guard today, being less of an asshole. It wasn’t good for her health, surely. She was being cordial with him. No, professional. She was being professional and that’s all that mattered.

Want my list of songs that make me think of Gravity Falls characters?
Tumblr media
I've stuck with the age old fandom tradition of "some of these songs make me think of these characters and relationships because the lyrics speak specifically to their experiences and some of these are just the vibes"
Stanley Pines
The Only Thing by Sufjan Stevens (I see it very platonically Stan thinking about Ford in the days after the portal incident)
Puff the Magic Dragon by Peter, Paul, and Mary (try not to think about this song coming on the car radio during Stan’s homeless years)
Brown Trout Blues by Johnny Flynn
Frankie’s Gun by The Felice Brothers
Breakin’ Dishes by Rihanna (something about 90s and 00s bops scream Stanley to me I don't know why)
Whatta Man by Salt-N-Peppa ft. En Vogue (I know he was listening to this religiously while fixing the Stanleymobile)
Icarus by Bastille
Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!) by Blu Cantrell
Stanford Pines
Welcome Home, Son by Radical Face
why did you invite me to your wedding by Kevin Atwater (the Fiddauthor angst is SO real)
Closer to Fine by The Indigo Girls (post-portal Ford babyyyy)
You're So Vain by Carly Simon (I feel like he relates to this one in a way he feels weird about)
Sloop John B. by The Beach Boys (I feel like he and Stanley have a blast singing this one on The Stan o' War II)
Fiddleford
Little Lion Man by Mumford and Sons (apologies in advance that most of Fidds songs relate to Ford. But this one is such a Fiddauthor song)
White Blank Page by Mumford and Sons (Verse 1 - Ford and Verse 2 - Fidds)
Joy to the World by Three Dog Night (look I just think he'd really like this one)
Clay Pigeons by Michael Cera
Mabel
Chiwawa by Wanko Ni Mero Mero (Mabel 1000% plays Just Dance and this song is in constant rotation)
Cats by The Living Tombstone
Dipper
*insert the entirety of the ABBA discography*
*insert all of The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess by Chappell Roan*

(if I'm annoying you with tagging you in all these posts pls just let me know and I'll stop 😅)
The version without the dialogue:
Tumblr media
Um so that chapter came out when I had about 20 minutes to spare before I was supposed to get picked up to go to dinner at someone's house and I speed-read it because my bestie @thewritingautisticat had texted me screaming that the next chapter had come out and my very soul shattered reading it and then my ride arrived and I was like "HOW AM I EXPECTED TO ACT NORMAL AT A STRANGER'S HOUSE NOW AFTER THAT AKDNSKFJAKJDKSKDKS" anyway even though it was extremely painful I loved it and made this and yeah!

Austin Grossman’s ‘Fight Me’
Tumblr media
On July 14, I'm giving the closing keynote for the fifteenth HACKERS ON PLANET EARTH, in QUEENS, NY. Happy Bastille Day! On July 20, I'm appearing in CHICAGO at Exile in Bookville.
Tumblr media
In Fight Me, the novelist and game developer Austin Grossman uses aging ex-teen superheroes to weigh the legacy of Generation X, in a work that enrobes its savage critique with sweet melancholia, all under a coating of delicious snark:
http://www.austingrossman.com/fight-me
It is, in other words, a very Gen X kinda novel. Prodigy (AKA Alex Beekman) is a washed-up superhero. As a nerdy high-schooler, he was given super powers by a mysterious wizard (posing as a mediocre teacher), who gave him an amulet and a duty. Whenever Alex touches the amulet and speaks the word of power, reaclun (which he insists is not "nuclear" backwards) he transforms into Prodigy, a nigh-invulnerable, outrageously handsome living god who is impervious to bullets, runs a one-minute mile, and fights like a champ. Prodigy, he is told, has a destiny: to fight the ultimate evil when it emerges and save the world.
Now, Alex is 40, and it's been a decade since he retired both Prodigy and his Alex identity, moving into a kind of witness protection program the federal government set up for him. He poses as a mediocre university professor, living a lonely and unexceptional life.
But then, Alex is summoned back to the superhero lair he shared with his old squad, "The Newcomers," a long-vacant building that is one quarter Eero Saarinen, three quarters Mussolini. There, he is reunited with his estranged fellow ex-Newcomers, and sent on a new quest: to solve the riddle of the murder of the mysterious wizard who gave him his powers, so long ago.
The Newcomers – an amped-up ninja warrior, a supergenius whose future self keeps sending him encouragement and technical schematics backwards through time, and an exiled magical princess turned preppie supermodel – have spent more than a decade scattered to the winds. While some have fared better than Alex/Prodigy, none of them have lived up to their potential or realized the dreams that seemed so inevitable when they were world famous supers with an entourage of fellow powered teens who worshipped them as the planet's greatest heroes.
As they set out to solve the mystery, they are reunited and must take stock of who they are and how they got there (cue Talking Heads' "Once In a Lifetime"). With flashbacks, flashforwards, and often hilarious asides, Prodigy brings us up to speed on how supers fail, and what it's like to live as a failed super.
The publisher's strapline for this book is "The Avengers Meets the Breakfast Club," which is clever, but extremely wrong. The real comp for this book isn't "The Breakfast Club," it's "The Big Chill."
When I realized this, I got briefly mad, because I've only had two good movie high concept pitches in my life and one of them was "Gen X Big Chill." Rather than veterans of the Summer of 68 confronting the Reagan years, you could have veterans of the Battle of Seattle living through the Trump years. One would be on PeEP, one would be an insufferable Andrew Tate-quoting bitcoiner, one would be a redpilled reactionary with a genderqueer teen, one would be a squishy lib, one a firebreathing leftist, etc. The soundtrack would just be top 40 tracks from artists who have songs on "Schoolhouse Rock Rocks":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schoolhouse_Rock!_Rocks
Every generation has some way in which they seek to overthrow the status quo and build a new, allegedly better one, after all. "Big Chill"'s impact comes from its postmortem on a generation where it was easy to feel like you were riding destiny's rails to greatness thanks to the sheer size of the Boomer cohort and the postwar prosperity they lived through. A Gen X Big Chill would be a stocktaking of a generation that defined itself as a lost generation reared in the Boomers' shadows, armored against the looming corpo-climate apocalypse with the sword of irony and the shield of sincerity.
Which is basically what Grossman is doing here. What's more, doing this as a superhero story is a genius move – what could be a better metaphor for a teen's unrealistic certainty of destined greatness than a superhero? Superhero fantasies are irreducibly grandiose and unrealistic, but all the more beautiful and brave and compelling for it.
You know, like teens.
At 52, I'm a middle-aged Gen Xer. I've got two artificial hips and I just scheduled a double cataract surgery. My hairline is receding. I'm an alta kaker. But I wasn't always: I was a bright and promising kid, usually the youngest person in the room where we were planning big protests, ambitious digital art projects, or the future of science fiction. I had amazing friends: creative and funny and sweet, loyal and talented and just fun.
We're mostly doing okay (the ones that lived; fuck cancer and fuck heroin and fuck fentanyl). Some of us are doing pretty good. On a good day, I think I'm doing pretty good. I had a night in 2018 where I got to hang out, as a peer, with my favorite musician and my favorite novelist, both in the same evening. These were artists I'd all but worshipped as a teen. I remember looking at the two selfies I took than night and thinking, Man, if 15 year old me could see these, he'd say that it all worked out.
But you don't get to be 52 without having a long list of regrets and failures that your stupid brain is only too eager to show you a highlight reel from. No one gets to middle age without a haunting loss that is always trying to push its way to the fore in order to incinerate every triumph great and small and leave ashes behind.
That's why there's a "Big Chill" for every generation. Each one has its own specific character and meaning situated in history, but each one has to grapple with the double-edged sword of nostalgia. Not for nothing, John Hodgman (a bona fide Gen X icon) calls nostalgia "a toxic impulse."
Grossman really makes Fight Me work as a Gen X Big Chill. He's a great Gen X writer; his first novel, Soon I Will Be Invincible, was a knockout debut about superheroes and supervillains that had a very "The Boys" vibe, you know, that neat little move where you contend with the banal parts of a super's life and show how super powers don't make you a good person, or even a competent one.
His followup to Invincible came six years later. YOU is a coming-of-age story about the games industry with a second-person narrator (think "Zork"). Grossman is an accomplished game dev (Tomb Raider Legend, Deus X, Dishonored, etc), and he uses YOU to really plumb the depths of what games mean, what fun is, and how working on games isn't just work, it's often really shitty work, the opposite of fun:
https://memex.craphound.com/2013/04/16/austin-grossmans-you-brilliant-novel-plumbs-the-heroic-and-mystical-depths-of-gaming-and-simulation/
Grossman's last novel was Crooked, a very daffy alternate history in which Richard Nixon is a Cthulhoid sorcerer locked in a Lovecraftian battle of good and evil. This is a purely hilarious romp, wildly imaginative and deliciously certain to offend reactionary jerks:
https://memex.craphound.com/2015/08/26/austin-grossmans-crooked-the-awful-cthulhoid-truth-about-richard-nixon/
All those chops are on display in Fight Me: a book that covers its brooding with wisecracks, that spits out ten great gags per page even as it drives a knife into your heart. It's a great novel.
Fight Me doesn't come out in the US and Canada until tomorrow (it's been out in the UK, Australia, NZ, etc for more than a month). Normally, I would hold off on reviewing this until the on-sale date, but this is my last day on the blog for two weeks – I'm leaving on a family vacation early tomorrow morning. I'll see you on July 14!

Top AMVs of 2024 - 10-1
A more in-depth breakdown of what I am doing can be found here, as well as the past entries here. Today’s entries are as follows:
10. Maybe the Real Friends Were the Dungeons We Ate Along the Way by Moonpie AMVs
youtube
Audio: Friends by Flight of the Concords
Visuals: Dungeon Meshi
Considering our hobby is all about timing visuals with music, I am surprised that when it comes to comedy amvs, I don’t see many discussions about comedic timing. And well if you were wanting a cool breakdown of how the two work, I can’t really give it either, but Moonpie’s work here might be just as good teacher.
In comparison to other comedy amvs I have discussed, this one isn’t really going for big laugh out loud moments as opposed to a generally goofy and lighthearted atmosphere. But considering the breezy pace of the song, it really works to keep the jokes coming and the actual flow not to get bogged down as well. Reaction shots like at 0:51 and 1:24 do a lot to help sell punchlines/add to the humor without worrying about getting in the weeds of literal lyric sync, and overall by the end it is still able to sell you on the sweetness of the group’s friendship, all shenanigans aside. And while I don’t read/watch the series, it is really nice to get reminded that these guys like each other.
9: He’s a Zombie by TheLazyDaze
youtube
Audio: Good Grief by Bastille
Visuals: When Sato-kun Died
And here we get to the last summer mmv exchange vid, the gift I personally received. If you forgot this list wasn’t extremely biased, now is a good reminder, but even if Daze wasn’t editing with one of my “titular dead bf” mangas, there is a lot to love.
She’s always been an excellent mmv editor, but this vid in particular is packed with so many great details. The foot sliding into the panel at 0:23, the hand animation at 1:08, the undressing animation at 1:29. I could list more, but you’re probably just better off reading my original youtube comment.
Funny enough I wasn’t a big fan of this song before this vid (although I generally like Bastille). But in the end it is such a great match for the series blend of slice of life and drama. There’s lingering sadness over the fact that he really *is* a zombie, but more time is spent showing what will be missed and enjoying the good memories they do have.
8. The Amazon by PieandBeer (CW: Gore & Nudity)
youtube
Audio: Brazil by Declan Mckenna
Visuals: Devilman Crybaby
The first time I watched this vid, I was certain it wasn’t going to work. The breezy guitars are tonally far from what I associate with Devilman Crybaby; however as I got past the instrumental opening, I found the visual rhythm of the vid too intentional not to get into. The vid was less dissonant than I anticipated, but instead contained a surprising amount of resonance.
This might be one of the more obtuse vids on this list. Even with knowledge of the source material and a full read-through of the lyrics on Genius, it is hard to summarize this vid down to one pithy sentence. As disillusioned as the lyrics are and and as intense as the violence is on screen, whenever we cut back to just the two leads, their tenderness is so sweet it hurts. It feels like a bit of a ink blot test where how you interpret it has more to do with what you bring to it, and for me it just invokes this feeling where you know the relationship with someone is done, yet you can’t help but keep reaching out to them. If you like your vids moody and introspective like me, I think there is a lot to enjoy unpacking here.
7. DO YOU WANT TO FUCK A GOOSE OR NOT? by keiichiface
youtube
Audio: My Brother My Brother and Me
Visuals: Princess Tutu, Lucky Star
Listen I ship the dude and the “goose” of Princess Tutu so I was gonna be a fan regardless but keiichiface went above and beyond to elevate the audio. Just combining the two sources already adds a lot. By going literal with a talk show totally outside the world of this man and his love affair with a water fowl, there is a expressive lip sync and that meta element to play with. And even when she is working with Princess Tutu footage itself, keiichiface keeps finding creative things to do. I especially love when the concept art gets brought hastily masked in for some ultra specific lyric sync. The rough edges only add to the charm, giving it a quirky vibe without detaching from the more impressive technical elements.
All types of art deserved to be celebrated. Even if there’s isn’t a lot meaningful or deep I can extrapolate about goosefucking in particular, there’s no denying that when it comes to shitposts, keiichiface is a master of the craft.
6. Our Neighborhood Has Changed by Obsidian Zero
youtube
Audio: Souvenir by The Midnight
Visuals: Kimba the White Lion
As much I love my sad stories, I am rarely the type to cry over something fictional. So out of all the vids I expected to work past my defenses, I didn’t expect it to be a Kimba vid. Still Obsidian Zero finds incredible emotional material by soundtracking a story of pouching and ecological destruction with nostalgic yearning for a past that cannot be returned to.
There’s a specific element of powerlessness this amv taps into that is really palpable. Similar to ctrl alt delete, we end on a moment of denied catharsis. It’s not a matter of mourning and moving on from one death or loss, but grief by a thousand paper cuts and loneliness that’s much more difficult to process. Add that in with great moments like Kimba swimming to the opening guitar riffs and or the impeccable gun sync, and you got a little lion that leaves a large impact.
5. Catch and Release by BecauseImBored1
youtube
Audio: Houdini by Dua Lipa
Visuals: Saint Tail
This is the platonic ideal of a lot of what I look for in amvs tbh. I will always love it when an editor takes a song I might have heard but not given much thought to, pairs it with a combo that, in retrospect, feels like it was made for, and then wraps up the entire package with tight flow and clever sync. The trick is more difficult to pull off then I make it sound, but BecauseImBored is honestly a pro at this exact thing.
If I had to describe this vid in one word I’d go with “bouncy.” There’s a lot of attention given to the specific vocal inflections of Dua Lipa’s voice for a lot of fun moments of sync. And thanks to that tight control of the vid’s flow from scene to scene, it is easy to get swept up in the excitement and miss some of the subtle overlays and masked transitions BecauseImBored1 has under her sleeve. All in all, just every shot of this is delightfully paced to the point you’re left satisified by the end of the vid and yet are still itching to press replay again.
4. AND YOU CAN’T COME by Troubleclef (CW: Sexual Grooming)
youtube
Audio: Harder to Kill by Carter Vail
Visuals: Chainsaw man
Juggling multiple tones in a video is a tricky task. Most songs aren’t full stories and are more snapshots of one idea. And even when you get in the 5 minute + range, that is still not that much time in the grand scheme of things to establish set up, payoff and then repeat the process all over again when you pivot to a new topic.
1:33-1:46 alone is an amazing sequence, condensing a lot of harsh and heavy storytelling down to just enough implication to make out what it is happening in between shots. I consider it to be this vid’s best part but what makes it such an effective bridge is what it is sandwiched between. The first half of the vid is light-hearted and boyish, concerned just as much with heartbreak as it is food and fun. But even after the turn, we’re still left with this grasping incomplete understanding of the situation. As Denji whirls around from building to building and we cut between grasping hands and looming eyes, it feels as if he is trying to put the pieces together, but can only get so far. The final section of the song, where the vid gets its title from is equally childish, but it fully captures this inability to fully process the horrors you are currently going through, even as you are feeling the full effects of it.
3. The Keeper by Elixir
youtube
Audio: The Keeper by Kai Wachi
Visuals: Jujutsu Kaisen
I had a friend who was curious why more vids didn’t use rap. And while I had my personal theories from my corner about how much was due to only looking in certain corners of the community and how much was other facts, this vid is probably the best argument for what the rest of us might be missing out on.
Going back to my “sum up a vid into one word” challenge, the one I would use here is intense. Not only does Elixir lean into the horror-influenced elements of JJK, but the song itself is full of all sorts of unnerving musical motifs that adds to the oppressive atmosphere. By the end of my first viewing, I had to take a deep breath just to release all he tension that had been building up. However even on a less visceral rewatch, there are so many great moments. Elixir uses a lot of fun internal sync for the standout sounds like the drill noise or screams. I love the focus on close-combat when the flow switches up at 1:36.
Overall the vid is like a great horror movie. Even when you know what jump-scares are coming, everything is set-up and executed so well you can appreciate them on both an emotional and intellectual level.
2: Disco Expansion: Infinite Rizz by Ileia
youtube
Audio: Feels Like by Outasight
Visuals: Jujutsu Kaisen
And now for something completely different. To steal a joke from someone much funnier than me.
Tumblr media
This vid dropped early in the year, but after seeing it I was already convinced this was gonna be one of my faves for 2024. Ileia’s flow is consistently slick and engaging, no matter the genre or subject matter, but centering a vid around Gojo’s new and invented disco powers gave her a lot more opportunities to get flashy with her tech work. All the overlays are great, my fave being the sound wave lengths at 0:28 and 0:31, but the transitions at 1:22 and 1:28 are no slouches either.
In contrast to The Keeper, here the horror elements are used cheekily. Some of the scene selection feels handpicked to cause physic damage to fans of the series, but even without context, it is hard to miss the punchline of heads rolling perfectly on beat. My fave moment has to be when Toji comes up and starts to sing along/fight. It just encapsulates how this vid keeps the perfect amount of goofy energy going without sacrificing a lick of its explosive momentum.
1: Velodrome by sandelwoodbox
youtube
Audio: Veldrome by Dessa
Visuals: Silo
My love for amvs and art as a whole tends to come from a love for character and narrative, the idea of narrowing a focus down to something direct and intentional. Even when I know there is no way for an outsider to get what is going on, I always strive to at least include some level of internal logic and progression for myself. Which is why I find myself to a certain degree to be even more drawn to vids that go in the opposite direction, that not only embrace that wider broad focus, but still maintain thematic cohesion.
More than any one character, Velodrome profiles an entire alternative society. While familiar faces pop up several times, no one voice or perspective stands out. Instead the lives of scientists, blue collar laborers, and children all weave together to paint a picture of place as beautiful as it is horrifying. The stairs that boys and girls slide down are the same stairs men fall to their death (a striking motif that syncs with nature fall of the singer’s inflection.) Most dystopian art focus on their attention on the injustice, the evil that consumes a place, but sandelwoodbox takes the time to show that a deeply wrong world can be one that still contains so much joy. And furthermore this fact only heightens why the injustice is so perverse in the first place. Even under amidst suffering, people continue to live, fight, and love. The editing carries that same restless energy, never truly coming to a still until the final shot.
As much as I love art, I don’t like acting like my tastes have to mean something. But if I have to wrap this up with a bow, Velodrome embodies both the sum of any work’s parts and the parts itself deserve equal love and attention.
~
Thanks for sticking around through my list and going on this new venture with me. A playlist containing all this vids, from number 1 to my honorable mentions can be found here. Looking forward to another year of great amvs!

Guidelines: share something that acts as inspiration for your OC(s)! It could be anything; a moodboard, a collection of pictures, a playlist, a movie, etc. Explaining why you like it as inspiration is optional.
