Yeah, that's right, I caved in.

Basically the exact same show except its established lore and setting is more largely inspired by archive compilations of popular vintage arcade games of the 80s and 90s such as Pac-Man’s Arcade Party, as well as the different takes within the sci-fi / fantasy genre by the likes of Wreck-It Ralph, Tron: Legacy, and Infinity Train.

= BACKGROUND (in a nutshell) 💿 =

In an attempt to save their dying business, C&A developed and manufactured the first hybrid arcade game of its own kind that combined other popular arcade games and home console games with virtual reality. However, just as the company’s luck was turning around, numerous lawsuits from game companies by the likes of Nintendo and families were filed against the company for their product, from apparently “ripping-off” Super Mario Bros. in its entirety to causing many children to either inexplicably fall unconscious or suffer from amnesia after the cabinet’s headset was put on. Just then, as C&A announced they’ll be temporarily recalling the product to fix its issues, a shocking discovery was already made by investigators that would soon bring the company to its demise: the game’s AI had gone rogue, and once a human mind dies from losing one of the games in any way, they are either permanently reincarnated as a personified cartoon character of themselves or just straight up die in real-life depending on the outcome.

"Are there any plans to make a full webcomic out of this?" - Uhhhh, mayyybe? I'm not entirely sure, honestly. While there may be a few side comics and artwork from my head I want to get out sometime, I don't really have much plans for this AU that'll be worth telling a full story right now since I feel there is plenty of things that I've yet to figure out and develop in a matter of time, particularly the setting and characters (especially considering the OG show itself has only 2 episodes out as of writing and I only have mobile apps like ibisPaint X to make this all possible at the moment).

"Can I make fanfics and OCs for this AU?" - Of course! I've seen a lot of incredible things from the community, especially in regards to alternate universes, so you're absolutely more than welcome to share whatever's on your mind as long as your heart's in the right place. I can't really guarantee I'll see every bit of it since I do have some personal biz of mine to take care of at any moment, but I'll be happy to reblog them whenever I get the chance. Just tag me and we all good. :)

"Are there any canon ships in this AU?" - Yes. Yes, there are. Well, only BunnyDoll (Jax x Ragatha) to be specific. HOWEVER, you are free to ship whoever you want here! Showtime (Caine x Pomni), ButtonBlossom (Pomni x Ragatha), it's all okay. The choice is yours, a romantic buffet! (Plus, depending on the quality of my writing, I'm not even planning to dwell too much into it for now, aside from the side comics that will.)

1x02 - Wendigo

Jensen has finally found Dean's voice! It's still a bit high, but it's slightly gruffer. According to the man himself in R2's Then and Now, 4 months passed between shooting the Pilot and Wendingo. In the meantime, he watched the Pilot and how JDM acted, and decided to have a similar voice, as would a first born son who idolizes his father.

Thanks to the rewatch, I finally get why I've never been a big fan of Sam. And it comes from the way he is written. From the 2nd episode, he's grieving and revengeful. He's cold with people, he doesn't care. And it's not a good way to make ME like him.

At the same time, Dean is the ❤️ of the story. He cares, about his brother, about their father, about the girl they're trying to help, about people. He says that helping people makes things a little bit more bearable. What's not to love about him?

1x02 in a nutshell:

Dean is bi: 0 pt because the criterion was created to highlight his interactions with men. BUT honorary mention of the bond he develops with the girl in this episode. In the end, she gives him a sweet kiss on the cheek and he's all flustered. It's really cute!

WAIT I ACTUALLY DIDNT EXPECT SOMEONE WOULD LIKE MY COMIC- THANK YOU SO MUCH... 😭 Might I say it means alot to me receiving these comments, The comic I made for that au is just based on my "Late-Night-Drunken-Doodles"

I want to call it that was cause I've always had runner up marware comics in this au every night, and whenever I write their dialogues they seem unauthentic due to my sleepyness. Wait where was I again? Oh right-

During Act 2, I originally planned to make this part whether she makes her own decisions for herself to NOT cope from the past but atleast focus on the present-future ahead. Thats why when Mario convinced to Meggy that Puzzles is not a bad person anymore, she debated on her mind if she'd give Puzzles a chance even after everything he's done.

(To remind everyone, one shot wren WORKED for Mr. Puzzles and he had admitted that during Puzzlevision Movie that he was the one behind their little adventures)

She faced on the present, proving to herself that anyone can change. Meggy destroys her hat. Forgetting Wren's existance and his bad doings that were growing all over her.

Side note- due to this scene being deleted, I decided to just make her destroy her hat with no Puzzles being in there but Wren. She just wanted to get rid of it.

And if you're also asking the Act, I had already planned a long time ago how it begins and how it ends. Acts are what I used for different side story and ALSO they're the basic set ups of rising actions and the impacts of how this story of the comic will take place in the right time. (My only problem, is that Ive never arranged them properly so my head is exploding)

We are STILL on ACT 1

Act 1 is called "Bond" it's the episode or- well- pages of the story where Mario and Puzzles made sense with each other and had their talks, said as hanging out and doing stuff together while Puzzles never realized something until now.

Although we're finally on Act 1, we have Pre-Act 1 of "Bond" which drags us to the VERY first beginning of a prologue. And yes, it's when Mario saw a TV of a head which we all figured it was actually Mr. Puzzles after his head got bashed into the sky with a luigi meat mallet. Pre-Act is yet to begin the story that would unfold into that chemistry we have going with Mario and Puzzles. So far they're still on progress with working each other out.

It might seems alot, but in a nutshell like any other. It's just some silly comic of the two complicated GAYS.

Act 2.5 in this scene is deleted and was re-written from the script. Meggy and Mr. Puzzles who are originally going to be friends of this story would probably NOT work out because they've JUST been moving on to Puzzlevision Movie after that. In the re-written version I had for her is that Meggy is now the LEAST character who has lines. But is still relevant to the story aside from SMG3 and SMG4.

The comic is atleast longer than um... than 100+ pages and these are just the Pre-Act and Act 1 still... imagine making more of that in 2 notebooks and end up having 500+ that would be a real dedication.

Analyzing the Teen!Feral Casey Playlist

Let's just dive in, it's a lot.

Lo malo de ser bueno (Cuarteto De Nos) - A Spanish song whose title means "The bad in being good" and their final line of the chorus being "That’s the bad in being good in a cruel world". The ironic ambiguity that's talked about throughout the song fits Feral Casey and his ambiguity with being half human and half Kraang.

Specifically, I like to highlight the bridge which translates to: "What bad luck to be superstitious. I cherish a circle and it becomes a vicious cycle. I am cautious and I swear sure that everything is doubtful. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I SAID "NO" WHEN I MEAN TO SAY "YES"? How many times did I sense the beginning of the end? HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I SAID "YES" WHEN I MEAN TO SAY "NO"? It's like that. As I tell you one thing, I mean the other. HOW HORRIBLE! EVEN MY WEAKNESSES ARE STRONGER THAN ME!"

And isn't that just the most perfect way to describe what it means to be split between two worlds?

Come Along (Cosmo Sheldrake) - I like to think of this as Feral Casey’s perspective on the side of Kraang. Luring you into a false sense of security and that brainwashed mindset that the Kraang is conforming us to.

I mean just take a look, doesn't this sound like the song is lying to you?

Hartebeast (Yaelokre) - In this sense, Casey is the hartebeast. This vicious monster lurking in our home and we don't know it. It also plays into my Roads And Rivers analogy (which you'll see soon enough) with the lyric "Where do we go when the river's running slow?" Which can be interpreted as "Where do we go when our source of humanity is gone?" according to my Roads And Rivers analogy.

Sunday Morning (Precious Pepala) - If you haven't heard this song already, YOU MUST. The song specifically is about being queer in a religious setting and being rejected because of it. How I see it, it's a song about Casey Sr and Jr being forced into the Kraang mindset. As you'll see soon enough in episode 3 (and have seen in the animatics already), when Cass or Casey don't follow orders, they are thrown into an incubator (the egg sac thing from the movie) and drown in a liquid that turns them more Kraang. "Fill my lungs with holy water, pray you'll claim me as your daughter."

I especially love the hard hitting lyrics in the bridge: "I've lived a thousand Sunday Mornings. I've read the verses, heard the warnings. I swear I'm not the Anti-Christ. But something about it don't feel right. So when it gets to Sunday Morning, I take an extra glass for more and I'm pouring out the blood of Christ. Maybe then I'll see the light."

This comic was originally going to be about religious trauma specifically. But things changed when I escaped abuse and understood my indigenous heritage.

Enemy (Nova Twins) - The lyrics speak for itself. "You don't wanna be an enemy, you wanna be a friend of me. Who the fuck are you? What you tryna do? You don't wanna be an enemy." Teen!Feral Casey specifically has the tendency to get on everyone's bad side. He understands who he is. Where he came from. If you don't like it, you can go fuck yourself.

Bodies (Drowning Pool) - Without spoiling too much...Arc 2 is about Casey learning why he can't escape the monster inside. He snaps, hurts people, then hides himself away until he is a teenager and comes to terms with the harsh reality. So...LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR!

Alien Blues (Vundabar) - I feel like we all feel like an outcast listening to this song. Casey has been and will always be outcasted. "My teeth are yellow. Hello world! Would you like me a little better if they were white like yours? I need to purge my urges, shame shame shame. I need an alibi to justify, somebody to blame."

Antagonist (Nova Twins) - If any of these songs are getting an animatic, it's this one. This is basically Episode 8 in a nutshell. As I mentioned before where Casey snaps and realizes he can't escape the monster inside. He is the antagonist in this song.

brutal (Olivia Rodrigo) - Teen!Feral Casey is 16, not 17 but close enough. Just an angsty teen song about being an angsty teen. Especially if said teen is shunned by his own society of either side. Human and Kraang hate him. "All I did was try my best. This the kind of thanks I get? Unrelentlessly upset!"

Emperor's New Clothes (Panic At The Disco) - Ironically, we start to see this song's meaning in the next update. Basically, Casey learns that "if you want something back, you must take it back yourself". So as the song suggests, Teen!Feral is "taking back, back, taking back, back the crown!"

This is Gospel (Panic At The Disco) - This is an inside with friends and I am not explaining anything. It's a niche meme reference.

As The World Caves In (Matt Maltese) - Another song that will be an animatic. In fact, this is the finale. You've heard already about a Doomsday approaching. And eventually... "The papers say it’s Doomsday. The button has been pressed. We're gonna nuke each other up boys. Till old Satan stands impressed."

Americano (Lady Gaga) - This song to me feels like what it feels like to be chicano. Which is basically Casey-

Hell's Coming With Me (Poor Man's Poison) - The line "I am the righteous hand of God. And I am the devil that you forgot." is basically Teen!Feral's vibe in a nutshell. "And I told you one day you will see, that I'll be back I guarantee. And that hell is coming, hell is coming with me."

Feed The Machine (Poor Man's Poison) - This song fits the vibe of Kraang so well. Which is ironic cuz the song is basically about corrupt capitalism.

Castle (Halsey) - I think I've already implied in the trailer animatic that Casey will return to the Kraang side. He's heading straight for the castle.

Panic Room (Au/Ra) - Also implied by the trailer. Remember all the blood and fire? And how Teen Casey kinda snaps? Yeah.

Hold On (Belle Sisoski) - This is how I imagine the Kraang’s "siren song". A song that infected sing to each other to calm each other down and maintain their sanity. Once they lose their sanity, there is no cure for them. (Also this song scratches my brain so good-)

Blood // Water (grandson) - Just like Panic Room, this is another song about Casey finally snapping. BUT THIS TIME, the bridge feels like what Casey’s message would be to Kraang Prime:

He has snapped, yes. But he snaps at his oppressor.

Monster (Skillet) - I don't think I have to explain this one. This is literally Casey.

Misfits: SOLAR (ALT BLK ERA) - I imagine this song as the theme for all of Gen Beta (Casey’s generation). The generation that was born into the apocalypse and therefore are very different from the older generations.

This is not just about Casey. But Hana. Donnie’s daughter. River (Julian's kid, you'll meet them soon). And all the other kids in the Resistance (and world) who have never seen a lush planet.

Dream On (Aerosmith) - We all know this song. It’s such a badass vibe that fits any apocalypse setting-

Carnivore (STARSET) - When I heard this song, I was enamored. Finally a song that didn't comfort you for being different but rather a song that feels like you are egging on your oppressor. Which is Teen!Feral's entire fucking mission.

And ironically, Casey is a carnivore. He needs a carnivore diet to survive, I don't make the rules. (I literally do-)

Radioactive (Imagine Dragons) - Another "gen beta is different because we are born into the apocalypse" song. But this time sung by a white men band instead of a black women band shfjsjdjdjssjdifhdh

Run Rabbit (ALT BLK ERA) - This is the BEST chase scene music I've ever heard. So naturally it is in this playlist.

Monsters (Nova Twins) - Again this is literally Casey in a nutshell.

Teenagers (My Chemical Romance) - Teen!Feral is literally a teenager that scares the living shit of people. :)

cinderella's dead (EMELINE) - Another "Casey snaps and accepts the monster inside".

DARKSIDE (Neoni) - I don't think I need to explain this one either. Same deal as before.

ALICE (PEGGY) - You don't know it yet but Casey is lying to himself about the trauma that the Kraang put him through. Convincing himself it was a good thing. "Made it up so she could cope. Madder than a hatter, Alice...broke."

VILLAIN (K/DA) - Yeah this is so Feral Casey losing his absolute marbles.

Control (Halsey) - When Casey becomes the monster inside, he loses all sense of control.

Yeah. He is...nuts. And in desperate need of a hug and chocolate milk. (NOT hot cocoa, Kraang are weak to heat. It will literally kill him-)

Itaweon class is a revenge story at its core about an underdog who does what feels right, steps up for his morals—and loses everything as a consequence. But it's also very heart-warming, idealistic, with power of friendship and lots of comfort scenes.

Seroy Pak is such a shining little lion. The whole story is basically built around him being so stubborn about his morals that he defies the big bad - the chairman of the ruling food company, his father's boss, the guy everyone bows down to. Instead of doing the smart thing, the survival thing, Seroy does the feel right thing—he fights back. At every. Damn. Step. Of. The. Way.

Many many characters note how stupid that is. How much his life would have been easier if he just bowed down, knelt, begged, apologised. Played by the rules. But Seroy never does, his morals and convictions always unscathed, even if the rest of his life gets freaking wrecked for it.

Seroy beats up the school bully even the teachers are afraid of, gets himself kicked out of high school, loses his father his job. And his dad says: I'm proud of you. That's a burned and broken lion right there. "I just want you to hold your head high and live confidently how I never managed." Geez, thanks for the advice.

The first two episodes are this inspiring backstory of this socially clumsy but very firmly set lion, who loses everything including his dad and dream job and nerves, gets imprisoned....by all means should be broken down. Except he comes out 2 years later with a 15 year plan how to get revenge on the impossibly powerful guy who did it to him. Cause he shouldn't be played with. Because he, Seroy, won't bow down to this monster, he should bow to him.

The way he can calmly and confidently go spew such unrealistic idealism makes people think he is mad...or scared or insanely inspired and loyal. Seroy's roaring lion gets people around him, loyal people who breathe for his dream, who do everything in his footsteps. His employees love and admire him. His arch enemy doesn't have a reason to fear him, yet can't stop getting pissed off by his mere existence.

That's the power Seroy has.

At the same time his method is a subtle, kind hard work. That's Seroy in a nutshell. When he currently isn't saving someone from injustice and refusing to bow down, he is...at work. Slow and steady. It's all in the people and trust. He can make it, be it 5, 10 or 15 years. His goals will be fulfilled and he will get enough money, people, right the wrongs. He will get his way through steady effort and honest work. Cheating never comes into question. Protection or using contacts...don't either. Seroy will suffer to abide the law just to not get any unfair cheats from anyone. He will rather take responsibility than the easy way out.

This is both, heartwarming and awe-inspiring and incredibly frustrating to watch. Especially if you are his slightly sociopathic double snake manager Ji-so. This girl is a genius and as egotistical and self-seving as it gets. She talks with people cause they are rich or have something she wants. But she is also incredibly bored by the inevitable predictability of everyone around her...except Seroy. Seroy, whose crazy morals and kindness principles don't make sense. Seroy, who is walking around all proud lion when he has nothing, no advantages, no talent, no capable employees or strategies.

From that point on, everything and everyone in Ji-so's life turns around her boss Seroy. He is the one she works for, protects, makes rich and famous. He is everything. Even when his logic and principles clash with practicality, even when Ji-so with her ruthless playful sneaky tactics would get his goal faster, she listens to him. She completely readjust her moral compass and methods so they align with his. She is his snake through and through.

Seroy doesn't fight for himself, he has high goals, revenge plans in the making, helps people around and works all honestly. It doesn't make sense to young Ji-so and she gets completely obsessed. Then fascinated. And then falls head over heels in love with him.

Funnily enough, O-Soo, Seroy's childhood friend and long term love interest is a snake too. She is only in it for herself. As an orphan, she learned to look out for her survival with all means necessary. If surviving means being quiet and submissive, so be it. If surviving and prospering means working for the guy who killed her father-figure and the dad of her best friend...so be it. There are many heart-breaking moments between her and Seroy, when she apologises to him that she has to do this. That she has to choose herself above him and everyone else's good, cause that's just how it is. She can't do it any other way. And she feels guilty for it because Seroy is her person. And in a very very round about logic, she is doing it for him, for her own secret 20 year old plan of revenge. But by doing the best for him she effectively kicks herself from her own group. She betrays him, spies on him, warns him about it, but he always reassures her it's fine, those are your morals, your convictions, I can understand this.

But she is doing it for him and for the group, except she can't be with them while she does it and ends up alone. That's why she spends the show absolutely miserable, hoping for attention and love she saboteges to pay back the debt nobody asked her to pay to the one person who had treated her right.

The biggest foil to Seroy's efforts and actions is his main enemy. The impossible to defeat the Chairman who ruins Seroy's life, because the little lion refuses to bow down. In a way this makes the chairman a lion as well. His goal, purpose and feel is the company. And his pride and conviction that he is the strongest and therefore should always be winning.

In the flashbacks it seems like he did it for his family, like he build the empire for them and cares about them, but in the end the Chairman cares about the image and about his pride and ego, not about the actual people he is protecting.

Even if Seroy and the Chairman show many parallels, from starting their companies with little to big goals and inspiring roaring lion cores, they differ mainly in the methods. Chairman is a sneaky underhanded snake where Seroy is a kind hard worker. Seroy can never forgive the intimidation, contacts, masks and everything the Chairman is willing to do to get his wins and wants. Where the Chairman corrupts, lies and blackmails, whatever works best for the situation, does Seroy choose to be honest, slow, do things through his own hands.

Yet Seroy gets fuled and inspired by the Chairman despite and maybe because of the hatedred. He only and finally loses his pride, when he realizes how much he cares about Ji-so (her showing her love through helping Seroy achieve his goals is the best way to get to a lion primary) that he is willing to kneel for her. That the Chairman would go as low as to threaten her life is the last drop for him. Seroy loses all his respect for him for this and never turns back. Even when he finally gets the Chairman on his knees in turn does he care half as much as he thought.

I'm not all that sure about the rest of the side-characters. The transgender cook is mainly a badger secondary through her hard work ways and fellow younger ex-gangster's loyalty and inspiration through Seroy makes me guess me think snake primary. Maybe they are all snake primaries really, cause they make big stands for each other, driven by dreams, ambitions, self-gain in a very natural, unapologetic way.

Very curious case is Kun-so, who stars out so shy and beat down. Everyone kept convicing him that as illegitimate second son of the Chairman, he had no right to want anything for himself that he just seemed like such a kind, shy, polite boy. When he fell in love with Jin-So and realized he was losing her to Seroy who he admired, he quit and tried to take over the Chairman's company by being his son and turning to his image.

It didn't work out, and not because it didn't feel right. That is not a factor for him. It just didn't prove effective. Seroy wins the fight against his father, so he is obviously the one in the right. Kun-so is lost in how much he wanted, in the unstoppable greed of desiring things for himself. Did he explode as a snake? Somehow he still stays sympathetic and likeable through all his moral switches and betrayals.

Maybe it's because of his badger secondary. The kid just needs to set a goal and an idol and then he succeed through doing the hard work. Doing his best to do what's asked of him, whatever that may be. You want me caring? Okay. You want me heartless? Okay too. Huh. The switching around of morals and personalities depending on what he decides now makes me think he might be a Bird primary. He is the one who doesn't know what he wants and feels lost, except knowing he won't be like his father. He is the one who sets his goal on taking over the company once Jin-so says that will win her over. And he simply accepts Seroy's reasons and explanations for everything, simply adapting them into his code. When Seroy says he is a kid and can forgive himself, then it must be true and Kun-so accepts it as part of his new truth.

O-Soo's methods seem super sneaky. She spies and and she stabs in the back...but she doesn't enjoy it and she isn't sneaky about it. She doesn't hide it, she even apologies and warns before doing it again. Her whole 15 years old plan worked even better than Seroy's and she did it with less people, from the inside, despite how incredibly deplorable it made her feel. Doesn't that make her a good candidate for Bird secondary? She made her plan and went with it. Preparations through all her positions, through all the years, from the inside the lion's den. Meticulous and detailed, to bring down the Chairman. Great bird. Snake Bird also fits her villainous vibes until the last episode.

The Visual Genius Behind UY2022 [Character Designs]- An Analysis 🧐 (Long Post)

Hai there, hope you’re having a great day! Today on ‘Yuca Analyzes Silly Things (For No Reason)’, we’ll be talking about how the remake uses different methods and techniques to achieve the fun aesthetic it’s known for as well as analyzing character designs and colors!

Note: There’s a lot to talk about when it comes to this topic, so I might not be able to cover ‘everything’, So I’m only analyzing sub- topics which comes to mind. And more importantly this is the first part of the analysis, since I had to split it because of how long it is and Tumblr only allows 30 images per post, so yeah.

With all of that aside, let’s begin!

First, We’ll divide the analysis into sections to make it easier to understand and explain, for this part we’ll be talking about:

Naoyuki Asano and Colors We start off with Naoyuki Asano, who is the Character Designer as well as Chief Animation Director (for the first ED, as well as episodes 1- 13) for the remake. As in the reason the remake looks so bright and colorful and the characters is mostly because of him! Actually, this isn’t his first time working on a retro revival which he gave fun and aesthetic designs, since he’s actually done work as a Character Designer on Osomatsu-San as well…

(Fun fact: Takahashi has stated that she has enjoyed his work on Osomatsu-San! But if he was chosen to design for UY specifically because of his work on this show has never been stated). Anyways, there’s a difference in how this remake is colored compared to most standard anime, on the topic of standard anime coloring, let’s look at the ‘Obstacle Course Swim Meet’ since it was first time Urusei Yatsura’s been animated with digital animation (if you don’t count the pachinko machine’s and stuff):

Now, don’t get me wrong, I LOVE THIS OVA. Not only does it adapt three chapters into one episode, plus it’s own original material, but it also manages to capture the perfect essence of UY. This OVA is basically UY in a nutshell, lol. Storywise it’s hilarious, as to be expected as special created for the 2008 anniversary, but there’s one thing I didn’t like about this OVA, and that is… the colors. Like, how to put it? Boring? Yep, that’s it. The colors are the ones which are usually used in that specific era and were also used for Inuyasha (The Final Act) and Ranma 1/2 (Like this one, OVA 2008) and these colors (or atleast similar ones) were used in other anime at the time. It’s a natural choice they picked cuz Sunrise was doing Inuyasha at the time. But boy do I wish these could be better, It’s like a case of this is how it is because that was the only option at the time, but from a modern point of view it could be made much better, and that’s exactly why UY2022 is such a visual gem!

Lum’s Multicolor Hair Of course, we can’t do a visual analysis on the remake if we don’t talk about what caught all our eyes first: Lum, or more specifically her new design. The fist aspect of her design we’ll be talking about is her hair. Lum’s ever changing iridescent hair has always been one of the most solid parts of her manga design, if you don’t count the bikini that is. But even though it was a staple of her design, when the manga was getting its anime adaptation, they were unable to animate Lum’s hair with it’s original look because of how difficult it was at the time with the restrictions when it came to 80’s animation, so instead they opted to choose a different color, something more grounded instead of the multi rainbow one and they chose dark green since that’s the color they chose for ten and they thought the color balanced well with the yellow in Lum’s design. And because of that most media depictions showed Lum with green hair and because of how more popular the anime is than the manga, her green hair became more well known then the manga’s iridescent color. Which brings us to now. For the remake they opted to give Lum the green(-ish blue for more of a standout color I guess…) hair, but here her hair changes color like in the manga, but here it depends on power, mood and surroundings. Here’s almost all of the different hair changes I managed to find in the remake:

You can also see how her hair is layered with different or similar colors just even in one photo (not the Otoko Kumino one since she’s pretending to be a human), this is something which is inherited and applies to everyone in from the maternal side of her family by the way (as in her, her mom, ten and his mom). However since everyone sans Lum’s hair’s color doesn’t change, the only difference in the layered colors is that they’re more or less darker than the base color. Also to note is that there are some official art which gives her more Iridescent colors from the manga:

And finally her hair changes color rapidly while electrocution…

Then there’s her eyes, Lum’s eyes are colored bright green in the manga, most of the time that is, other times it’s colored dark green, blue or even yellow, so the remake’s colors aren’t that far fetched. Same for her eyeshadow. (Also her bikini’s a bit different as well in the sense her tiger stripes are limited and she also has string which holds it whereas she had no such thing in the manga. This isn’t a big change either, but I just wanted to point it out. I do prefer the manga’s though). That’s all for Lum, Now we can move onto the rest of the characters!

Character’s Designs The character design in general is a lot cuter (like the round faces and all) than the manga’s artsyle, like the manga’s artsyle is cute af, but when the characters are drawn in a clearer and with closer shot they tend to look more elegant (or masculine if we’re talking about the guys). I tend to think of the artsyle as a combination of UY’s early artsyle and it’s final artsyle. It also kinda reminds me of how Takahashi draws the characters in smaller panels.

I also realized that the characters hair highlights were based of RT’s art as well, she doesn’t always give her characters highlights, but when she does, they look like…

Oh, and I should also state the the highlight change color depending on the surroundings as well similar to Lum’s hair. Now we’ll talk about the different method for colors used to determine the character’s hair:

Characters like Ataru and Sakura have their hair colored as their most notable color (notable cuz of the coloring in the 80’s anime), Like Ataru’s hair in the manga is brown, but I’m pretty sure Sakura’s is black.

Characters like Shinobu and Mendo have their standard hair colors as well, brown and black (which are also their manga hair colors as well), but both are tinted with other colors, for Shinobu it’s a tint of (purplish) pink and Mendo has a tint of dark blue, AKA the most used colors when Takahashi gives them abstract colors for their hair in official manga art:

Characters like Ran and Rei have their manga colors, but as you can see their highlights are colors which sticks out more compared to their actual hair colors.

And Characters like Benten have their alternative hair color from the manga instead of her actual hair color (In the manga, it’s black except when Takahashi’s going abstract, then it’s red). I think there’s also the option to use a random abstractly tinted color or just a random abstract color in general, like for Ryoko, but it’s used very rarely it seems. That’s really all the different types of hair color decisions made in the remake, everything I can think of that is (idk if I missed anything and sorry if I did). The decisions for the eye colors are really more according to what would suit them, and the colors chosen are different colors, some have regular Japanese eye colors like brown (like Ataru and Sakura), some have colors which the average Japanese doesn’t have (like Shinobu and Mendo). The aliens’ eyes also have two differences from the humans’ eyes…

First, The aliens eyes are colors which are realistically impossible like ‘Hot Pink + Blue’ or ‘Bright Orange + Yellow’ meanwhile the humans have colors which are realistically possible. And second, the aliens have an extra layer of color surrounding their pupils, while the humans do not. An extra thing I want to point out is that Tobimaro’s stars are yellow instead of white, which I found kinda weird since what they were supposed to reference were originally white, but I guess these guys thought it would stand out more or something. Anyways, that’s it for the eyes! Now we’ll talk about skin and clothes. For skin color almost every character is the same as their manga counterpart except for I think Tsubame and Tobimaro, who are noticeably a bit more tan (but I don’t really care cuz somehow they look more handsomer because of that, also Tsubame doesn’t look all that alike to Godai now). As for the clothes it’s a combination of the manga’s and og anime’s colors like the ribbon on the sailor suits are colored like in the og anime instead of plain in the manga, Benten’s outfit is red in the anime instead of the steel color from the manga, The Tomobiki school uniform is like it’s manga counterpart with the black jacket and the shirt instead of the og anime’s blue jacket and random t-shirts and so on… We’ll end this entire part by appreciating how well the remake adapted Oyuki and everything related to her (like she has her actual ice hair? ice one piece? more icicles on her hair? All like the manga instead of the injustice they did to her in the og anime? Hell yea!)

(Okay I have to say she does get ice hair later on in the 80’s version but it’s clearly purple and kinda soft like actual hair, and not much like ice minus a few blocky lines and little glazing, I still prefer the remake though. Also the 2008 OVA gives her ice hair as well but it’s no where near pretty as this one.)

Conclusion (for now) For now we’ll have to stop here since I’ve hit my image limit. I hope I’ll be able to complete this with the next part. The character designs for the remake is very well thought out and a lot of people probably watched the remake because of the character designs. I apologize if I’ve overlooked anything or made any mistakes. 1x05 - Bloody Mary

It had to happen, this is the first average episode (IMO). The plot wasn't fresh, there were very few banger quotes. Fortunately, it gets better in the end! Also, there's an upgrade in some special effects: the weird lights that bothered me when they were driving have disappeared. They simply had to remove the cars' front windows (and even the windshield?) to do the trick 🤣

The episode is about Sam, because of parallels. A girl blames herself for her (toxic, threatening to commit suicide) boyfriend's death, Sam blames himself for his girlfriend's death. And he tries to forgive himself because he probably couldn't have stopped it.

BUT this episode is also about secrets, that you keep from others until they eventually hurt, or kill you. On that part, Sam hasn't evolved yet because he still wouldn't share with his brother.

As explained in the episode, he's just too desperate to be normal, he still hopes he can go back to a normal life if he just forgets about his visions...

And he's still a bit judgemental, but I guess it's simply in his nature. He doesn't respect the way Dean earns money and wastes it without consulting his brother. And he believes spirits are 'basic', whereas Dean expresses a strong and nuanced vision about what is right or wrong.

And hum... what about Dean's lies? Because he also cries bloody tears, but it's never mentioned. This has been addressed in R2's Then and Now, and yeah, it definitely seems to be a detail added for no reason, or simply forgotten.

Ugh I am so uncomfortable right now

I have a sinus infection and I haven’t been sleeping well the past couple of nights, so I’m tired, but no matter how hard I try, I cannot seem to fall asleep

But I’m also too tired to do anything else, so I’m just stuck in this state of absolute boredom

So I just binged a bunch of anime today

Finished Dungeon Meshi and loved it. Absolute banger of a show. And so many attractive character designs. Laios? Kabru?? Daya??? The other female dwarf???? That evil elf twink????? The female orc??????

All it needs is a super femme, super bitchy queen bee type character, and it will have satisfied ALL of my types

Also Falin and Marcille are so yuri coded, love that friends to lovers schoolgirl energy

I also watched the first episode of that omegaverse anime. It was p good. I was confused why they decided to make alpha/omega relationships the taboo one, since typically that is the most common one. Because they wanted the characters to face adversity without directly including homophobia, I suppose?

Then why not make them an alpha/alpha or omega/omega pair?? That’s something I haven’t seen before, and it would better align with the whole metaphorical homophobia thing!

I mean, I know why they didn’t, but idk. It would have been more interesting in my opinion.

Additionally, I had a hard time focusing on the anime due to the way they portrayed the child, Hikari. They said he was 1 going on 2, so as someone who works with that age group, I couldn’t help but notice every time Hikari wasn’t acting his age.

I won’t bore anyone with details, but basically, his gross motor movement is pretty behind for a boy who is almost 2. Meanwhile, his cognitive and emotional development is quite advanced for that age group. His ability to speak in nearly full sentences is not entirely out of the realm of possibility (I’ve taught 1 year olds with advanced vocabularies before) but his ability to still access his vocabulary during moments of emotional distress is less convincing.

I wish it was that easy to communicate with toddlers in the midst of an emotional meltdown. It would make teaching so much easier.

However, I did think it was a cute touch that after being compared to a star, Hikari spent the rest of the day pointing out every star he saw and calling it his own name. And I appreciate that they didn’t bother showing us the 20 more times he did the same exact thing the following two weeks.

Toddlers will 100% become obsessed with a tiny detail they overhear, and talk about it almost exclusively for weeks afterwards.

So be careful about what you say around toddlers. You never know what they will internalize and repeat like a broken record for the next 14 days straight.

Anyway, that’s basically my day in a nutshell.

Favorite Couples

Oh boy. There are so many issues and touching moments to consider. Ranking these pairings will not be fun. But love is in the air, so I'll give it a try. This is just my opinion, of course. Other people will, naturally, have preferences that differ, which is something to celebrate. It's all about what works for you.

8. Sheila and Flash

With this pair, we're talking about people from two different worlds -- literally -- and two very different sides. It's no secret that their respective families don't exactly get along, but the fact that she'd been sent to take him down was a secret at first. To her surprise, Sheila found herself falling for Flash instead. Things got rocky for them once the truth came out, but the couple's affection ultimately conquered all. Also, this relationship showed that Flash could love again after Dale, and that this love could be just as powerful.

7. Tori and Richie

The clashing personalities made this bond a lot of fun from the beginning. Their feelings got deeper over time, and they found themselves truly drawn to each other.

6. Rick and Jedda

Probably the most well-known and beloved 'pairing' from the show. They have nice moments in episodes like "100 Proof Highway" -- which, notably, revolves around Jedda dating someone else -- and "The Golden Queen." It's all about that magic subtlety. I like how their bond has progressed in fan fiction. They basically discuss respective issues in their pasts while considering a future together.

5. Dale and Flash

This legendary couple reunites in numerous tales, but they find that getting back together isn't quite so simple. There are various issues awaiting them, old and new, including Dale's deepest secrets (collusions with enemies, familial ties), and Flash's new love life. However, these two have an unbreakable bond, which endures whether there's romance involved or not.

4. Kristina and Rick

Possibly the most controversial pairing after Krotan and Jedda, these former opponents find themselves working together and having discussions that lead to some unexpected warmth between them. The attraction grows as their adventures continue, and nature takes its course.

3. Phantom and Hadea

Hadea and Kit have some of the longest, most intimate conversations in DoE storytelling -- and some of the most engaging as well. In a nutshell, she's a queen, and he's a soldier. On occasion, they find themselves at odds when her methods and ambitions clash with his values. Despite that, their great affection -- based on mutual respect, Hadea's love for his daughter, and her displays of compassion when it matters most -- usually brings them back together.

2. Krotan and Jedda

This is probably the most interesting couple in DoE fan fiction, because the bond is, ultimately, about two people escaping their respective fathers' legacies. It's all been covered before, so I'll make it short: Krotan becomes a better person via his interactions with Jedda, and Jedda accepts that it's okay to take a different road in life than the one that she was always expected to take. After they become parents, Krotan's old habits threaten to pull him away from the family -- which would leave their children raised as Jedda was raised, with only one parent present. So Jedda puts her foot down, and insists that he gets it together. He does, and their love prevails.

1. Amy and Rick

"I'm making a bargain with Damian Dark."

"No," he said, eyeing his lap.

"Rick..." she mumbled.

"No, no, no. Ames..." he groaned, "have you lost your mind?"

"It's easy for you to sit there and judge. You don't know what it's like being me."

"Sure," he said, chuckling a bit. "Growing up wishing that your dad was around? I have no clue what that feels like. Thinking that a sibling gets most of the love? I guess I can't relate to that one either."

Rick and Amy discovered a surprising and undeniable chemistry as they started to bond. While accompanying each other amid various endeavors, they found that they had more in common than they realized, which led to a strong tenderness and a lasting commitment. When comparing the top two couples on this list, I maintain that the Jedda/Krotan pairing probably features the most character development, but Rick and Amy are the most fun.

Win some, lose some: Rounding up more Winter Anime Season 2025 shows

We got a mixed bag in our hands, and make no mistake. Let's dive in.

OKITSURA: Fell in Love with an Okinawan Girl, but I Just Wish I Know What She's Saying

"OKITSURA" is a fun show with a simple premise: Mainland Japanese teenager transfers to an Okinawa high school. He quickly develops a crush on a girl in his class, but she talks a lot in Okinawa Islander "dialect" (or rather: language) and another girl, her friend, jumps in to translate.

Seems pretty clear he's going to end up with the translator, he just doesn't know it yet. The show is chockful with lore about the island of Okinawa, making it colorful and cute. It's also funny and plays its various cultural and romantic embarrassments well.

3 episodes in, all good.

Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective

This is a mix of Sherlock Holmes and "House, MD", really. Smol but brilliant pathologist solves medical and criminal mysteries. She of courses is brash, oversteps boundaries, and way too full of herself.

But the show is doing good mysteries, so definitely worth a watch. (4 episodes so far.)

Anyway, I'm Falling in Love with You

Childhood friends, one girl, four boys, the heady days of youth, yada yada. The one who will win her in the end is her simple guy childhood friend aka hot guy #1, pretty sure. There's a potential love triangle set up with generic hot guy #2. She's the generic "can't make up my mind" heroine.

Everything's generic about this show which tries to win us over by reminding us that COVID robbed many young people in Japan of what they thought of as the best days of their youth. Except when the show isn't bland, it's actually about the comparatively pushy moves hot guy #1 makes on her. And no character in sight to care about in the least. Dropped after episode 2.

Sakamoto Days

Once the best hitman of them all, he is now a family man, running a shop, with a big pot belly and old man look to him. But he's still got it!

Two episodes in, the cast is still assembling, but basically Sakamoto is kicking ass while also trying to keep the promise he made to his wife.

So far, funny. Likes its occasional action gore. One of the shows where you best not think about the logic much.

I'm Getting Married to a Girl I Hate in My Class

Speaking of "don't think too hard", the premise of this show is that two teens are made to cohabitate, aiming for marriage (or already married?) by their blackmailing grandparents. Of course they had this strong love-hate relationship already before.

Yes, it's a silly premise. But it's basically your classical rom-com in a nutshell. We already know she's crushing on him, so basically what we get is him shaping up, her stopping to be such a nag, and a lot of togetherness building an actual tender relationship between them.

There are definitely stupid elements in there, no doubt. It works, though, in spite of its typical anime flaws. Probably because it has a lot of cute and shy moments.

Magic Maker: How to Make Magic in Another World

Even though I talked a lot about formulaic Isekai shows in my last post (and some good ones), this one actually stands out. Because it isn't formulaic!

A salaryman gets reincarnated into the body of a baby boy. He hoped against hope in our world that magic was real and his sole desire for his next life is experiencing magic as real. Except: He finds his world has monsters and fantasy vibes, but no magic!

One day he and his childhood friends find a force powered by emotions that fits the bill, except not everybody can see it. None of the adults can! Naturally he wants to master it - even if he has to invent it first.

3 episodes in so far, and nobody has said "S-Rank", nobody has opened a status screen, nobody knows they are level 7, and while the boy has uttered things like "Fireball!" he has done so to no effect. Also, the show implies there will be social repercussions for being different... Intrigued!!

Reincarnated as a Sword

I thought the title was dumb. The show sure isn't!

Guy gets, well, reincarnated as a magical sword, and he's setting out to make himself OP. Except he never gets so OP that the story gets dull. Plus, a cute and poor cat girl becomes his bearer. From there on out it's almost all win.

The show is seriously cute, has great action, is well-balanced when it comes to challenge vs character skill, and has good storytelling. It also has its nice emotional moments and makes you laugh out loud.

Great show!

Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf!

This one has an interesting premise. Guy drifts into fantasy world at night where he keeps having adventures in another world with complete continuity since he was a child. He also knows this elf girl there. One day, she ends up next to him in bed in Japan.

The show mixes a fantasy part (when they sleep) with a "Oh, we're discovering Japan!" part. Lots about loving the food and having baths is super-nice. She's of course over-the-top cute and secretly in love with him.

Cute enough to pull it off, but don't expect much in terms of drama or suspense, I'd say.

Honey Lemon Soda

Puh, on the fence about dropping this one. She's super shy and introverted and getting bullied for it. Her bullies call her "Stony" ("Ishi" means "stone" and is part of her name) because she freezes up when she's insecure.

He is a young guy with attitude (but no delinquent) and can't make up his mind if he's her white knight or just mean to her (supposedly for her own good). He certainly stands up for her and teaches her how to ask for help and enjoy her youth. She of course falls for him hard but can't act on it, he is not admitting to himself that he does this because he's in love with her.

The side cast is slowly developing (and likable), the bullying is rather brutal (including physical threats to a girl), but this might actually turn out well if the "I'm not good enough and should shut up" vibe doesn't get too strong. I might still drop it, but it might actually be a decent show.

The Returnees

"The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, REALLY Love You" is back and making a lot of funny fourth wall breaking jokes which is just as well since there's no chance you can take this show serious.

Back for more in late 2024 was "Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductions" and it stays brilliant, even though it sets out on its foreshadowed Moriarty storyline. Usually the introduction of Moriarty (or his descendants or successors) spells doom for any detective show because it becomes all stupid head games, but here it's okay, and thankfully it doesn't swallow the whole season.

Then there's season 2 of "Solo Leveling", and I wonder if the "I have an undead army" gimmick is breaking the show's balance too much, so carefully established before. (Also, discovering the game aspects of the phenomenon is sidelined a lot in comparison.) It's not as suspenseful as season 1, that's for sure, but so far, still good.

Didn't mention it before, but also still going is "A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School!" which is a silly show which I do tend to watch as a filler. Human teacher is hired in Yokai (Japanese mythical monsters and spirits) school. Lots of silly hijinks define this show. Sometimes trash.

Finally, "Blue Box". The love triangle vibes in this one are getting strong!

i've been fairly transparent that he reminds me of my younger self but most people actually grow out of it now granted, the great crusade is basically the complete opposite of a positive character development incubator actually wait i have a pithy phrase that sums things up "the perfect is the enemy of the good" actually huh that kind of fits the book in general given the EC
