National Chocolate Day

With so many different varieties of this delicious treat, it can be so hard to pick a favorite. What will you choose to indulge your sweet tooth?

A food that encourages passion, many people would consider chocolate to be a gift to the world. Whether eaten in the form of a chocolate bar, enjoyed as a chocolate beverage or used to bake a variety of desserts, chocolate has a rich history and a bright future! 

History of National Chocolate Day

Dating back more than 2000 years, chocolate seems to have originated in the Amazon where the cacao beans are made into a bitter-ish drink. Ancient Mayans and Olmecs of southern Mexico, as well as Aztecs were so enamored by the chocolate drink that some said that it must have come from the gods! Which is why it was likely used as a ceremonial drink at the time.

The name of the tree that produces the beans for making chocolate is Theobroma Cacao which, when translated, means “food of the gods”. It was named by taxonomist Carolus Linneaus who likely named it after the fact that Aztecs considered chocolate to have been something that was given by the gods.

By the time chocolate was discovered by Westerners in the New World and then made its way to Europe in the 1500s, it was something that was reserved for the wealthy and upper classes. It was not only enjoyed by them for taste reasons, but it had been discovered that the cocoa beans also had some health benefits!

Sugar was eventually added to the concoction and, as the product evolved over the next couple of centuries, it went from being only something that was made into a beverage but was developed into the eating chocolate that people enjoy today.

In the 19th century, along with the development of the industrial revolution, new processes came about that offered the opportunity to produce chocolate on a more regular basis. Of course, chocolate companies began cropping up in England, Europe and the United States. Fry & Sons created the world’s first chocolate bar in 1847.

Today, chocolate continues to be a huge industry, with cocoa beans grown in warm climates and exported to chocolate manufacturers all over the globe. Whether it’s the Hershey’s chocolate company in Pennsylvania, the Lindt company in Switzerland, or a smaller local chocolate company, it’s fun to enjoy access to this delicious treat.

What could be a better day than National Chocolate Day to brush up on some fun facts related to chocolate? Plus, this would also be the perfect day to share a few bits of chocolate trivia with friends, in honor of the day! Get started with some of these facts:

One pound of chocolate requires 400 cocoa beans and each tree produces approximately 2500 beans, so one tree can make about 6 pounds of chocolate.

Cacao trees are very delicate and farmers typically count on losing up to 30% of their crop each year, so being a chocolate farmer is a volatile business!

Although cocoa beans seem to have originated in the New World, the most cocoa farms, around 70% of those in the world, are located in West Africa, with Cote d’Ivoire as the single largest producer of cocoa.

It takes approximately 4-5 years for a newly planted cacao tree to actually produce fruit, so it requires a great deal of patience from the chocolate farmers.

Any day worth celebrating is worth enjoying and sharing with friends! National Chocolate Day is a great time to pick up a variety of chocolates and make plans to share them. A little over a month had passed since Natalia and Bruno’s big news. Natalia woke up just before the sun rose one morning, her and Bruno’s room still dark. She looked over at her husband sleeping beside her and smiled, sad that she couldn’t spend the rest of the day cuddled up with him.

She crawled out of their bed without waking him, and headed down the hallway to freshen up and start her day.

She got ready for work and headed down the stairs. She glanced over and saw Mirabel in the dining room, making herself some tea.

“Good morning Mira!” Natalia said with a wave.

“Morning tía!”

Natalia walked over, giving Mirabel a one-armed hug over her shoulders.

“How are you this morning?”

“A bit groggy, honestly.” Mirabel said, her voice still sleepy. “Hoping this tea helps. How are you? Feeling okay?”

“I’m good, thank you.” Natalia replied, smiling affectionately at her. “Hey, do you have any plans this afternoon?”

Mirabel shook her head. “Nope, why?”

“Want to come shopping with me after the bakery closes this afternoon? I have to grab some ingredients for the week, but we can just have some girl time and do some browsing beforehand. I’ve been cooped up inside all week, I need some fresh air.”

“Absolutely, I’d love that!”

“We don’t get enough Natalia and Mirabel time just the two of us, so thanks for letting me steal you for a bit.”

“I love our girl time!” Mirabel said. “Do you want me to come by the bakery at 3 today then?”

“That’d be perfect. I know you’ll tell someone in the family but can please you let your tío Bruno know too that we’ll be out together after work so he doesn’t worry?”

“Of course! No problem.”

Natalia kissed Mirabel on the side of her head. “Thank you kindly! Have a good day, I’ll see you this afternoon!”

“You too, bye Nati!”

It was a normal day at the bakery, and Natalia was happy to see Mirabel’s smiling face come through the door at the bakery’s closing time.

“There’s my beautiful niece brightening my doorway!”

“Hi tía! Oh my goodness, it smells even better in here than normal. What is that? Smells like...bananas?”

“Ah, you know just the compliments to go straight to my heart. I made a few loaves of banana walnut bread about an hour and a half ago, it’s best on the second day so I prep it the day before I want to sell it.”

“Your banana nut muffins are tío Bruno’s favorite, right?”

“They are! Nice memory. It’s a very similar recipe, just in loaf cake form.”

“Are...any of your chocolate chip muffins still available?” Mirabel asked, attempting to mask her anticipatory excitement.

“They wouldn’t have been if I didn’t set one aside for you this morning.” Natalia said with a knowing smile, handing Mirabel a paper bag with her name and a heart written on it.

“You’re the best, thank you!!!” Mirabel exclaimed, excitedly opening the bag and taking a bite out of her muffin.

“I admit to cheating a bit, when I first started dating your tío I wrote down all of the Madrigals favorite desserts as I learned them and kept a handy dandy guide on me.”

“That’s not cheating, that’s just being thorough!”

“I knew I liked you.” Natalia teased.

“I’m curious now." Mirabel said in between bites. "What’s Dolores’ favorite dessert?”

“Chocolate eclairs. She goes absolutely nuts for them. A close second for her are cream puffs, which are essentially just mini eclairs anyway.”

“Interesting! And Isabela’s?”

“Blueberry anything, but blueberry pie specifically.”

“Good choice. Last one for now, I swear. Tío Félix?”

“Snickerdoodles. He’s a cinnamon fiend.”

“Wow, what a previously untapped wealth of knowledge I’ve gained access to!” Mirabel laughed.

“A way to a person’s heart is through their stomach, my dear.” Natalia replied with a smile, crossing her arms. “I know better than anyone that it is always so helpful to know what foods people love!”

“True! How about you, what’s your favorite dessert?”

“Me? Hmm, that’s tough. But if I absolutely had to just pick one thing, I am a sucker for chocolate chip cookies. There’s something so magical about a properly done, fresh out of the oven chocolate chip cookie that just makes my heart so happy.”

“Mmm, yes. Great choice.”

Natalia looked over the bakery, checking that everything was in place before they left.

“Okay, I think we’re set.” She said, grabbing her keys off the counter. “Estás lista para ir?”

Mirabel nodded with a big smile.

Natalia and Mirabel browsed the busiest marketplace in the Encanto at a relaxed pace, filled with stalls and brick-and-mortar shops. They had picked up some odds and ends during their visit so far, but mostly just spent the time enjoying each other's company, chatting, and browsing.

The two of them passed by a storefront that, to Natalia’s surprise, stopped Mirabel dead in her tracks.

The display that had caught Mirabel's attention so quickly belonged to a photography shop, one that sold cameras and developed film.

Mirabel’s eyes were locked on a beautiful champagne colored camera in the window display, the edges of it glimmering in the sunlight.

“Ooh, that camera is so pretty.” Natalia said.

“Isn’t it?” Mirabel replied with a loving sigh.

“I had no idea you were interested in photography, Mira.”

“Oh yeah, I think it’s absolutely fascinating. Last year I chatted with a friend who owned a camera all about photography and I haven’t been able to get it off my mind since.”

“Let’s go inside and take a look!” Natalia said, heading in front and walking through the door.

“Wait, no we don’t have to–" Mirabel began, but by the time she got her words out Natalia was already inside.

“Hello ladies!” A young woman working at the front counter said, smiling at them.

“Hi there!” Natalia replied, smiling back at her.

“My name’s Aly. Was there anything I can help you with today?”

“My niece was just admiring that gorgeous camera in the window there. Would she be able to take a look at it?“

Mirabel was completely enraptured, looking at the room around her filled with different types of cameras.

“Ah the Finetta 88, claro!” Aly said. “I have a non-display one in the back room here, let me grab it.”

She returned with the camera and handed it to Mirabel, an awed expression in her sparkling eyes. The camera felt very sturdy and well made in her hands.

“It’s gorgeous.” Mirabel said softly.

“It’s got all the latest features.“ Aly began. “Viewfinder, interchangeable lens, four different shutter speeds, aluminum construction. A real winner in every category.”

“Do you need previous photography experience to best use it?” Natalia asked.

“Nope, that’s another big plus for this model. Totally beginner friendly. The instruction manual tells you everything you need to know, and I’m of course happy to help with any questions you have as well.”

“Do you love it, Mira?” Natalia asked, smiling affectionately at her.

“Yes, it’s incredible.” Mirabel said, looking through the camera’s viewfinder with a huge smile on her face.

“Perfect, then it’s yours.” Natalia said, looking over at Aly. “We’ll take it.”

Mirabel pulled her face away from the camera, looking at Natalia in shock.

“What?! Oh my gosh, you don’t have to–“

“I know I don’t have to, I want to.” Natalia said with a big smile.

Mirabel sat the camera down on the counter beside her and ran over to hug Natalia, jumping up and down from excitement.

“Thank you thank you thank you tía!”

Natalia's smile grew during their embrace, squeezing Mirabel tight.

“You’re so welcome my love, I can’t wait to see all the beautiful pictures you take with it!”

Natalia paid for the camera and a few extra rolls of film. Aly put the camera back into its original box and placed it in a bag alongside the film, handing the bag to Mirabel.

“Eeeeeee oh my goodness I’m so excited!!!” Mirabel cried out, clutching the bag to her chest. “Can I ask some questions real quick?” She said to Aly.

“Of course!” Aly replied.

"Take all the time you need." Natalia said.

Natalia watched with a big smile as Mirabel excitedly ran through some photography basics with Aly, her eyes growing wider and more excited with each moment.

After all her questions were answered, Mirabel thanked Aly and then looked over at Natalia.

“All set?” Natalia asked her. “No rush at all.”

“I’m good, Aly was so helpful!” Mirabel said. “Thank you so much again, this is such an incredible surprise. I’m so excited to try it out!”

“I’m so excited for you!!” Natalia said. “I am always happy to support your interests. Seeing the way your eyes lit up the second you looked at that camera in the window, that was magical to watch.”

Mirabel beamed at Natalia, holding onto the bag like it was the most valuable thing on Earth.

“Enjoy my dear, and come back here when you’re ready to get your first roll of film developed!" Aly said. "First roll’s development is on the house.”

“Thank you so much Aly, I will!” Mirabel said gratefully.

Natalia and Mirabel said goodbye to Aly and exited out of the store. They finished up their shopping, dropped off Natalia’s groceries at the bakery, and then headed back to the casita.

Mirabel excitedly ran between members of the family as soon as they got home, showing them her new camera. The family oooh'd and aaaah'd at the camera, all of them absolutely thrilled for her. Bruno had been helping Julieta out in the kitchen when Mirabel ran into the room, and he was overjoyed to see how happy she was with the gift Natalia had gotten her.

Natalia was chatting with Luisa in the courtyard, and as Luisa walked away Bruno approached Natalia from behind. He put his arm around her shoulders and she looked up and smiled at him, both of their hearts fluttering in their chests immediately.

“Hi you!” Natalia said excitedly.

Bruno leaned down and kissed her. “Hello!”

“I love you!”

Bruno beamed at her, as madly in love as ever. “I love you so much. You’ve made our niece crazy happy, that was so sweet of you.”

Natalia smiled. “The pleasure was all mine, truly. You should’ve seen her face when we passed that camera in the store’s window. She just lit up, it was like there were fireworks in her eyes. It was one of those moments where I knew if I didn’t do something right then and there it may have slipped by, you know? It’s so important to foster those types of passions when they strike, especially at that age.”

“You’re incredible, as always. I can see if means the world to her." Bruno paused, looking her over. "You’re an incredible tía and you know, I think you’d be a really incredible mother too. Want to have my babies?”

Natalia laughed, putting her hand gently on her stomach. “Working on it!”

“Feeling okay today?” Bruno asked, kissing her on her temple.

“Yes, thank you. I’m sorry if I was tossing and turning last night, I had a tough time staying asleep.”

“No need to apologize, you never woke me. Any particular reason you couldn’t sleep?”

“Not sure.” Natalia shrugged. “Could be a pregnancy thing, could be nerves over the pregnancy thing, who knows. Just kept waking up. I snuggled up to you, but you were out like a light. I even leaned in close to your face at one point to make sure you we’re breathing.”

Bruno laughed apologetically. “I was out yeah, I didn’t even dream last night. Just was out and then resumed consciousness the next morning. But hey, if you ever need me during the night, please wake me okay?"

Natalia smiled. “Thanks honey, I will.”

The early part of the evening passed, and Natalia was sitting in the windowsill of a large window in one of the casita’s hallways on the first floor. It was a wide space, plenty of room for a few people to sit on. She had made the space sort of her own over time, adding some pillows and cushions to make the space comfy.

She was sitting with her legs folded up in front of her, her notebook propped up on the top of her thighs. She had been writing some ideas down for new bakery items and enjoying the view of the sunset out the window.

Mirabel was walking through the hallways with Bruno looking for Natalia, excited to share the news with her that her camera was all ready to go. She hadn’t taken her first photo with it yet, as she was waiting to talk with Natalia first.

Natalia didn’t hear the two of them approaching her, distracted by her thoughts and the view out the window.

When they walked up to the window, Bruno felt a familiar lovesick ache in his chest. The light of the sunset poured through the window, creating a warm pink and orange glow that filled the entire room. Natalia looked peaceful and contemplative, and Bruno was, as was so often the case, awestruck by how beautiful she was.

“What a perfect first picture this would be!” Mirabel whispered to her uncle. “Do you think Nati would be okay with that?”

Bruno nodded. “Absolutely, go ahead.” He whispered back.

Mirabel looked through the viewfinder of her camera, lined up her shot, and clicked the button.

The shutter’s noise caught Natalia’s attention, and she glanced over at her side. When she caught sight of the noise’s origin, she smiled.

“I should be thanking you yet another time, tía." Mirabel said sweetly. "Thank you for being my first photography subject!”

Natalia’s smiled widened, surprise in her eyes.

“So that’s what that sound was! I’m honored. It is a beautiful sunset.”

“The sunset was only a small part of what made that shot so beautiful, amor.” Bruno said, looking at her lovingly.

“He’s right!” Mirabel agreed. “You looked absolutely gorgeous in this shot!”

Natalia blushed. “Thank you both. Congratulations Mira, you’re officially the family photographer now!”

Mirabel beamed at her, turning towards Bruno.

“Oh, tío! Can I ask you a favor?”

“Of course.” Bruno replied.

“Can you take a picture of Nati and I together?”

“Wow, she’s only one shot in and she's letting you use her camera. That’s an honor.” Natalia said.

Bruno smiled. “It is indeed. I’d be happy to.”

Mirabel handed Bruno the camera.

“Look through the viewfinder here–“ Mirabel said, pointing at that area of the camera. “–then when you’re ready, click this button here.”

Mirabel ran over to Natalia, and they sat beside one another on the windowsill. The two hugged each other from the sides, big grins on their faces.

“Alright, ready?" Bruno said. "Uno, dos, tres!”

The camera clicked as the photo was taken, and Natalia took the opportunity to give Mirabel a few affectionate kisses on the cheek.

“So excited for you, Mira!” Natalia exclaimed. “Thank you for including me in your first pictures!”

“Thank you for making this happen at all, tía! Now, can you take one of me and tío Bruno?”

“You got it.” Natalia said, taking the camera from Bruno. Bruno and Mirabel put their hands around each other’s waists, smiling wide for the picture. The genuine joy in both of their expressions was infectious as Natalia snapped the photo.

“Thank you thank you!” Mirabel exclaimed, taking the camera back from Natalia. "I’ll get one with both of you at some point too. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have…well, everything and everyone to go take photos of.”

Natalia and Bruno laughed, watching Mirabel speed walking down the hallway.

“Honestly Natalia, how do you handle being an actual living work of art at all times?” Bruno asked, taking her by the hand and twirling her around. “I want at least a hundred copies of that picture Mirabel took of you.”

“You’re so sweet.” Natalia said, pulling Bruno in for a close embrace. “I’m excited to see all of her pictures, I know they’ll be gorgeous. That one of you and her was so sweet.”

Natalia motioned to the window.

“Want to come sit with me, finish watching the sunset?”

“Of course.”

Bruno sat down up against the wall, and Natalia sat in between his legs. She rested her head comfortably on his chest, and he wrapped his arms around her waist, covering her stomach gently with his hands. She covered his hands with her own, and they both sighed contentedly as they looked out the window.

After a few moments, they heard another click! and saw a beaming Mirabel a few feet away them.

“Sorry, couldn’t resist! See ya!” She giggled, flying back down the hallway.

Natalia and Bruno laughed.

“Are we sure she doesn’t have super speed that she’s just been hiding this whole time?” Bruno joked.

“We’re just that cute, gotta catch that shot when you can.” Natalia replied.

“Can’t argue with that.”

Natalia snuggled into Bruno’s chest, taking in this warm and happy moment where everything felt right in the world.

I’ve come up with a Sonic au and I wanna share it >:))

It’s a Strawberry Shortcake au thing, I was inspired by Strawberry Shortcake LMAO

I also got most of the desserts from my partner because they helped me think of ideas so I’m giving huge credits to them :))

I’m planning on drawing everyone’s designs maybe today or tomorrow and if they turn out good then I’ll post them but no promises, I’m very insecure when it comes to my art LMAO

Lunch - 1 chicken and vegetable pie with barbeque sauce, 2 servings salted crackers and sweet chilli cheese, sweetened black tea.

Snack - serving of charcuterie board snacks.

Dinner - serving of string hoppers, chicken curry, pork curry, roast chicken drumstick, potato and egg curry, 1 mini fish cutlet.

Dessert - 1.5 servings assorted desserts (ribbon cake, biscuit pudding, wattalapan, chocolate eclair).

Water - 1.6L, alright.

Went to the birthday party for my mum's cousin. Had a great time catching up with the cousins. :)
