🍓Pita sa jagodama🍓 Potreban materijal: testo 250g margarina ili maslaca 300g brašna 2 žumanca 2 kašike šećera nadev 6 belanca 300g šećera 300g svežih jagoda Priprema: Jagode oprati, prosušiti I sitno naseckati. Zamesiti margarine, brašno, žumanca I šećer. Zamešeno testo uviti u plastičnu foliju I ostaviti da odstoji u frižideru sat vremena. Odstajalo testo izvaditi I oklagijom razvući u koru veličine pleha 26cm. Pleh podmazati I pobrašnjaviti, pa pažljivo koru. Malo je izbockati viljuškom I staviti da se peče u rernu predhodno zagrejanu na 200C 15 minuta. Posle tog vremena smanjiti temperature na 180C I nastaviti sa pečenjem. Za to vreme pripremiti nadev. Belanca prvo mikserom mutiti dok ne postanu penasta bez šećera, a zatim dodavati postepeno šećer uz stalno mešanje I mutiti zajedno nekih 10-15 minuta, dok šam ne postane jako čvrst. Isključiti mikser I u šam dodati seckane jagode, pa pažljivo promešati I sjediniti varjačom. Izvaditi koru iz rerne I preko staviti nadev sa jagodama. Poravnati I vratiti u rernu da se dopeče. Peći 15 minuta, a zatim smanjiti rernu na 150C I peći još 20 minuta. Pečenu pitu ostaviti da se malo prohladi (ne skroz) I seći je oštrim nožem umočenim u vruću vodu. Napomena: Površina pite (nadev) treba da bude krckav, a unutrašnjost penasta. There will always be people who are blinded to the truth. Politics seem to be no longer about how to govern a society. More, who will stand with wrong, who will stand with right. 

I would never argue that someone is evil because they stand with a political party, Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Green. But I would argue that there’s a blinded ignorance - and perhaps evil - to stand with someone who is as morally defunct as the former president. The two are not the same. 

But today, those senators who voted to acquit the former president were presented with so much evidence to convict him they can only be seen as supreme cowards, and that will be their legacy. They chose political power over doing what was right.

The things that have unfolded have lately made me feel more patriotic. Typically, I am not. Being “patriotic” has always felt to me borderline “nationalistic,” that our country is the best and greatest, maybe a claim made largely by people who have never traveled outside of it. But lately I’m feeling more patriotic mostly because the events unfolding are so ruthlessly unpatriotic. What could be more unpatriotic than someone using an American flag as a weapon against others who are trying to defend the United States Capitol? What could be more unpatriotic than a leader urging them on?

The unspeakable shamelessness. 

Here’s where I draw the line on patriotism: saying the pledge at school. For one, we are not a country “indivisible.” I don’t believe it’s a god that helps govern us either, that we are acting “under god.” But mostly I won’t say the pledge because I’ve lived in countries where if you do not pledge allegiance to your country, you’re in risk of getting a knock on your door in the middle of the night and disappearing. I don’t need to pledge my allegiance to this country. I already have, by taking an oath to defend my county and the constitution in Peace Corps. Not saying the pledge is equally patriotic - I am exercising my right to protest, a privilege not granted in every country.      

I feel patriotic when Lady Gaga sings “....our flag was still there.” I feel patriotic when I see President Biden being given a tour of The National Institute of Health, and he and all his colleagues are wearing face masks. I feel patriotic when I see images of the Joe and Jill Biden decorating the White House lawn with Valentine hearts. They are bringing back kindness and love. 

Here’s what helped me get through this mentally draining day of listening to the senate trial - making Lemon Poppy Seed Chess Pie, from my cookbook Pie For Everyone. I had a slice with tea while listening to a discussion about the acquittal on the radio. Then, my brother and I had a long, warm talk on the phone, reaffirming the importance of reaching out to family and loved ones, especially now.
