how poetic is it that dan feng's next incarnation joins the nameless in their trailblazing expeditions on the astral express after failing to revive his own nameless best friend, baiheng. baiheng never had the opportunity to board the astral express, yet, it's almost as if, even if dan feng couldn't succeed in reviving her in his previous life, perhaps he might live her dreams for her in his current one.
... and even if both their memories don't live on in such remembrance in the minds of their current incarnations, the fulfillment of a lost wish still holds so much more relevance than one can perceive...

i did not care about jiang yanli and jin zixuan's relationship in the novels or the donghua like. at all. separately i liked them well enough (esp my girl jyl shout out to her fr) but together they were nothing more than a necessary step to get my son my joy my darling jin ling. but in the drama.... in the drama omg i am obsessed with them they are literally so cute and awkward and in love and i love them so so so much those actors have totally convinced me of their relationship i would die for them

have wwx and jc ever considered each other brothers in the novel? i've never gotten that impression (them being brotherly) from them in any of the adaptations except from CQL but everyone tells me i just don't know where to look
No. Not once do they ever refer to the other as a sibling. The only one that explicitly does say Wei Wuxian is her brother is Jiang Yanli. Wei Wuxian, given the way he is constantly called a servant only, does not call either Jiangs his siblings due to that position and how it is weaponized against him. Jiang Yanli is also the only Jiang that says she takes it as an insult for Wei Wuxian to be referred as such during Baifeng Mountain's debacle.
ExR:
Jiang YanLi added, “Besides, hunting is hunting, so why bring the matter of discipline to the table? A-Xian is a disciple of the YunmengJiang Sect. He grew up with my brother and I, and so he’s as close as a brother is to me. Calling him the ‘son of a servant’—I’m sorry, but I won’t accept this. And thus…”
She straightened her back and raised her voice, “I hope that Young Master Jin ZiXun would apologize to Wei WuXian of the YunmengJiang Sect!”
If the one currently saying these words wasn’t Jiang YanLi and instead some random person, Jin ZiXun would probably have come at them with a slap already. His face was almost black, but he kept his mouth shut. Jiang YanLi stared at him quietly, refusing to turn her eyes away.
Madam Jin spoke, “A-Li, why are you being so serious? It’s just a small matter. Don’t get so worked up.”
Jiang YanLi’s voice was soft, “Madam, A-Xian is my younger brother. Him being humiliated by others, to me, isn’t just a small matter.”
Sevenseas:
Besides, Siege Hunts are Siege Hunts. Why bring up family upbringing?” Jiang Yanli added. “A-Xian is a disciple of the Jiang Clan of Yunmeng. He has grown up with my brother and I. We are as close as real siblings. To so bluntly call him the son of a servant—forgive me, but I cannot accept it. So…”
She straightened her frail back and raised her voice. “I hope Jin Zixun-gongzi will apologize to Wei Wuxian of the Jiang Clan of Yunmeng!”
If it had been anyone but Jiang Yanli who’d said this, Jin Zixun probably would’ve hit them by now. His face was dark, and he was deeply silent. Jiang Yanli also only stared at him, equally silent. Her gaze did not waver for even a moment.
Madam Jin finally spoke up. “A-Li, what are you being so serious for? It’s just a small matter, don’t be mad now, hmm?”
"Madam, A-Xian is my little brother,” Jiang Yanli said quietly. “When others insult him, it is no small matter to me.”
Hanzi:
My translation:
Jiang Yanli said, "Besides, hunting is hunting, why do you have to mention family discipline? A-Xian is a disciple of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan, and he grew up with my brother and I, to me we are as close as siblings. I cannot accept the fact that you called him "son of a family servant". Therefore..."
She straightened her back and spoke loudly, "I hope that Master Jin Zixun can apologize to Wei Wuxian of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan!"
If anyone else other than Jiang Yanli had said this in that moment, Jin Zixun would have already slapped them. His face was almost purple in dark anger and he kept silent. Jiang Yanli also stared at him quietly, never taking her eyes off of him. Madam Jin spoke up, A-Li, why are you taking this so seriously? It's just a small matter, don't be angry. "
Jiang Yanli spoke softly, "Madam, A-Xian is my brother. It is no small matter to me if others insult him."
Now this is very telling as with Jiang Cheng come the impromptu meeting after Wei Wuxian has freed the Wens, says nothing at all like this. Only agreeing with Jin Guangshan that he has always been troublesome without disputing the disparaging claims of Wei Wuxian trying to usurp the role of Yunmeng Jiang's leader.
And again, this is pointed out thirteen years later by Jin Guangyao this wouldn't have been exploited if Jiang Cheng would have chosen to support and stand by Wei Wuxian as more than a troublesome shixiong. Even during his own tirade within the temple Jiang Cheng does not bemoan the loss of a "brother" but that of a subordinate. Words mean things and none of how Jiang Cheng spoke of Wei Wuxian was ever one of sibling-ship.

WujiWatch: CQL Rewatch Episode 25
Something that I’d suspected on previous rewatches really became inescapable on this one: when Wei Wuxian leaves Baifeng Mountain, even before he meets Wen Qing, he has already made the decision to leave Yunmeng Jiang Sect.
He’s been staying for three reasons—for his brother, for his sister, and for the sect—and in this episode, each leg of the tripod is knocked out. “Staying for Jiang Cheng” was already tenuous from the previous episode: Wei Wuxian knows that he’s a constant disappointment to Jiang Cheng and doing a shit job as Jiang Cheng’s second-in-command. But Wei Wuxian goes into this episode believing that, by virtue of his power/skill, he’s still a huge asset to the sect, and that, as a brother, he has to stay for Jiang Yanli. By the end of the episode, he will come to believe the opposite: that both the sect and his sister are better off without him.
When it comes to Yunmeng Jiang Sect, Wei Wuxian learns in this episode (from Jin Zixuan) that people are saying the Yin Tiger Seal somehow harmed the cultivators who were there when he used it at Nightless City and so Wei Wuxian (and thus Yunmeng Jiang) owe them compensation. Wei Wuxian’s greatest strength is thus instantly transformed into a liability for his sect. The same thing happens, symbolically, at the crowd hunt, where Wei Wuxian uses his incredible power to draw 30% of the prey into Yunmeng Jiang’s nets—and instead of being impressed by Yunmeng Jiang’s strength, people say it’s cheating and reflects poorly on the sect, ultimately forcing Jiang Yanli to apologize on Wei Wuxian’s behalf, which Wei Wuxian clearly finds almost unendurable.
Speaking of which, when it comes to Jiang Yanli, as a fandom we tend to focus on her absolute ethering of Jin Zixun and how badass it is—which is fair! But that’s clearly not Wei Wuxian’s takeaway from that interaction. He looks extremely upset the whole time she’s defending him—I think in part because he hates the idea that she has to defend him. As far as he’s concerned, it’s his job to defend her, and this confrontation means he’s failed.
Then, when the dust has mostly settled on the Jin Zixun thing, two last straws: first, Jin Zixuan confesses his feelings for Jiang Yanli, meaning that she is now pretty much certain to marry him; and second, Jin-furen tells Jiang Yanli that she shouldn’t be alone with Wei Wuxian anymore because it will spark rumors that the two of them are sexually involved. The first honestly might have been enough on its own to make Wei Wuxian believe that he’s just dragging Jiang Yanli down – he tried over and over to protect her from Jin Zixuan, and now it’s clear all that effort was futile at best, and actively detrimental to her hopes at worst. (He could have figured this out a while ago, obviously! Jiang Cheng did! But here we are.)
But that second piece is really the nail in the coffin. Wei Wuxian may not like Jin-furen, but he has to recognize that she genuinely cares for Jiang Yanli and has her best interests at heart. When she says to Jiang Yanli, “Stay away from Wei Wuxian or your reputation will be ruined”—especially in a feudal setting where a woman’s reputation for sexual purity is everything—he has to take that seriously. And he does. Not instantly; he still grabs Jiang Yanli’s wrist and tries to pull her away again. But when she resists, he stops in his tracks. And that’s when it’s over.
That’s when he bows to Jin-furen and says, “Then I have to ask you to take care of Jiang Yanli for me”—confiding his sister to her care going forward. That’s when he tells Jiang Cheng, with a strange gentleness, “I might not be able to be there with you”—supposedly about the Flower Banquet, but it’s clear he’s not talking about just that. That’s when he gives Lan Wangji a “Farewell, Lan Zhan” that sounds way too final for someone who’s just heading out to walk around town. I don’t think Wei Wuxian necessarily has a plan for what he’s going to do next, as he walks off of Baifeng Mountain and through the Lanling streets. But I think he’s already made up his mind that he won’t be going back to Lotus Pier.

idek why I’m obsessed with phoenix mountain wangxian, but I am
didn’t wwx briefly imagine that some lusty mountain beast was the one that kissed him? we could go that route, or - hear me out, scum villain style papapa plant pollen, with the added bonus of bringing one’s true feelings to the forefront of the whole pls dick me down’ thing that’ll be going on as well. ah yes, mt baifeng, the home of lusty beasts and suspiciously convenient sex plants.
anyways, you can’t tell me that wwx didn’t have at least some very un-het and un-platonic things going on for lwj in his first life.
i want all of that shit to hit him like a goddamn truck.
so. wei wuxian, having had his fill of the sunshine, jumps off the tree and meanders around, accidentally stumbles into a pile of nice-smelling flowers. like, really, unnaturally nice-smelling, in ways that flowers shouldn’t be. more specifically, they smell like sandalwood, which is, obviously, wood and not flowers. strange, isn’t it? and if wei wuxian also happens to be getting weirdly hard from the scent - well, he’s a healthy young man in the middle of a hunt, isn’t he? things happen! dicks happen! it is what it is.
lan wangji, who has been following behind him like the cute little repressed creep that he is, sees wei wuxian sitting unmoving in the flowers, practically coated in a thick layer of dusty ass pollen, two fingers close to a mental breakdown about the state of his dick. and so, understandably a little concerned, he walks closer. when wei wuxian remains unmoving, he does the gentlemanly thing and calls out a regular-old, lan wangji style, not hot and not cold, exactly like room-temperature water, ‘wei ying?’
wei wuxian hears him and. the truck hits. strike one!!!
immediately, he knows who it is, but what surprises him is the way his thighs clench together at the sound (sex pollen let’s go) and more importantly, the sheer amount of feeling that surges into his chest (feelings pollen let’s really go) an all-consuming mix of admiration, joy, desire, and the straight-up burn of love. no running, no hiding, my homegirl pollen lets him know exactly what he’s been repressing, and wei wuxian chokes under the weight of it.
if lan wangji was a two on the scale of concern before, he’s now on a solid eight. hurrying forward, he drops onto his knees next to wwx, reaching out and calling his name again.
(now, sure, the pollen can affect lwj, as a treat, but this ain’t about him. he’s already pretty horny for wwx all the time, plus he’s so aware of his feelings that the pollen is a step down in intensity, actually)
wwx knows that seeing lwj right now is a Certified Bad Idea, but he’s too high on pollen to care much, pulling off his blindfold and springing onto lwj. cue uncontrollable love confession as wwx practically vomits his messy feelings all over the poor guy, who, on one hand, is absolutely elated and also horny bc the way wwx is gripping him is Not Subtle.
But. lwj being lwj, quickly realises something is wrong, figuring out that the pollen is mad suspicious and telling wwx that he doesn’t know wtf he’s saying, let’s just all calm down now and get some help (while horny gripping, lwj u freak)
of course, wwx has to debunk him asap, so he pulls out every embarrassing receipt out of the vault in an effort to get hanguang-jun’s pants off, logically and methodically. their first meeting? wwx was so thrilled that he didn’t actually mind losing his emperors smile. library pavilion days? all the better to see lan zhan’s pretty face with. waterborne abyss near-death experience? heavens, lan zhan’s arms were really…
qishan discussion conference? it was all wwx’s fault. accident what accident. he knew what he wanted, lwj’s attention and his ribbon - even though he didn’t know lwj would get so angry, he just wanted lwj to look at him, okay! you think his hand could slip?? please!! he’s more likely to shoot himself in the foot with an arrow!
xuanwu cave? don’t think he’s weird, lan zhan, but it was kinda nice to spend some time alone together, even if their third wheel was a giant murderous tortoise…
not to mention the sunshot campaign - you think wwx liked leaving lwj in the dust every time he brought up his cultivation? no!! don’t blame him, lan zhan, he just didn’t wanna be dragged to gusu for punishment, nor dirty lwj with all the corpse fumes!! (wow this guy is embarrassing)
after this verbal thesis, lwj is left blinking. wwx, who is about to lose his mind, pounces again. lwj, having all avenues of resistance exhausted, just. does not. resist.
in fact, he is equally if not more enthusiastic as wwx.
yes they get freaky in the flowers. yes lwj has to confess as well, and gets wheedled into a matching play-by-play of wangxian’s greatest hits with wwx being the prompter. yes they get married live happily ever after and lwj gets to fuck a new core into wwx. the enddddd I’m just so so so normal about these two.

A friend who, unfortunately, likes JC defended him a lot to me when I was first watching the donghua then read the novels. Perfectly honest, I thought he was a loser but my friend kept defending him for being able to pull the Jiang sect together after the LP massacre but...I don't know? Did he really? wasn't it more WWX's reputation that pulled the sect up and high? Is JC actually a good leader? I have trouble seeing that
Hi anon 😊
Ah yes, I have been there as well unfortunately!
Although I was respectful of their opinion, it seems we no longer talk haha 😆 Perhaps it was something to do with the time they claimed JC hunting down and torturing innocent people who used guidao was "just a baseless rumour" - to which I casually responded with proof it was certainly not a rumour. I mean, JC literally encouraged JL to kill them and feed them to his dog for a start 😂 I don't think that was a joke in the slightest lmao. Honestly, I didn't expect them to take offence at the evidence proving otherwise, since we enjoyed discussing the novel and debating such things anyway! But, hey-ho!
Hmm, the whole "restoring the Jiang sect to its former glory" debate is a major source of discourse between MDZS fans! I mean, JC did join forces with the Twin Jades of Lan and launch a surprise attack on the Wens in order to secure their confiscated swords. Which I have to say, I always found so hypocritical and two faced of him to do... You know, considering he not only unjustly blamed LWJ for everything that happened to LP, but even wished WWX had left him and JZX to die in the cave prior to the attack as well! And he calls WWX shameless...
But even so, JC seems to have worked hard in the three months WWX was missing. Attacking the Wens supervisory offices and hunting down WC alongside LWJ and the respective cultivators under their command. Even WWX praised his efforts when they were all reunited. So credit where credit is due, I guess.
That being said, it works both ways! WWX's efforts should not be ignored either - which I often find the case whenever JC is praised for his accomplishments regarding the Jiang sect. WWXs new cultivation path is what helped them gain an upper hand during the Sunshot campaign, he garnered much praise and admiration during the war - it was only in the aftermath that people began to turn against him, especially seeing the obvious lack of loyalty or protection from JC. But WWXs guidao most certainly helped rebuild the sect's reputation and enticed new disciples as well. JC even gave his blessing for WWX to showcase his cultivation during the Mount Baifeng night-hunt, in order to recruit even more disciples! So I agree with you, WWX's new cultivation path was one of the driving forces in helping elevate the sect to its former glory, perhaps even beyond.
As for whether JC is a good sect leader? Honestly? No.
Evidence would suggest otherwise, in my opinion. Some like to pretend JC is the beloved sect leader of Yunmeng - but that's far from the case. He's made the sect less approachable, closed its doors to the public and scared away those seeking help on matters he doesn't deem worthy of his attention.
The general public seem frightened of him because of his awful personality and the fact they have witnessed him torturing innocent people. His own disciples seem to feel like they have to walk on eggshells around him and be careful of his famous temper. He seems more focused on pushing JL beyond his limits and imposing his own insecurities on the poor kid than actually helping others with their problems. When he's not doing that, he's off hunting down his latest unsuspecting victims to torture and do god knows what to!
So no, I don't consider him to be a particularly good sect leader, his priorities do not align with what I (or I would assume most others) would consider as such. A great leader is able to get along with others and inspire their disciples. They should also be able to secure backing from the general public by being present and approachable when issues arise.
Let's put it this way - LWJ was given the title 'Hanguang-jun' a title befitting of how the public perceive him, righteous and willing to help others. JC also has a title, that of 'Sandu Shengshou', which is in relation to a Buddhist saying regarding the three poisons - the root of all turmoil. Certainly not a good public image to have! Even the general tone of anyone talking about him isn't overly respectful - people rarely call him by his courtesy name unless they are addressing him directly. Otherwise, it's his birth name, which of course, is highly disrespectful unless you are very familiar with said person. MXTX made a deliberate choice for the public to call him 'Jiang Cheng' instead, so it is certainly significant and shows us that he is not well respected or liked by the general public and even other cultivators! This is in the first few chapters as well! All in order to set the tone of how JC is perceived. I mean, even the narrator (which is of course a stand alone entity/person and not WWX as many wrongly assume) calls him JC instead 😂
Overall, I think JC did put effort into building his sect up again, but WWX certainly deserves equal credit for that as well. That being said, it doesn't alter the fact he's not a very good leader in the sense I would consider, and I think that's been made more than apparent in the text as well.

Rereading MDZS again and it strikes me just how JGY argues that the friendship and assistance he offered to LXC is a debt that LXC owes to him. Does LXC even 'owe' JGY anything even if you look at their relationship from a purely transactional lens? We see no evidence that LXC has failed to support JGY. LXC helps him to expand the hunting grounds at Mt. Baifeng, drinks the tea that Meng Yao prepares to shame the other cultivators for their behaviour, speaks up for him when Jin Zixun throws his wine cup and reiterates, over and over again, that he believes in JGY's innocence in the face of WWX and LWJ's accusations. There is also no evidence that LXC has done anything to oppose Lanling Jin, before and after JGY became the leader of the Sect.
More importantly, LXC also saved JGY's life in return. JGY was counting on LXC's appearance after the assassination of WRH to prevent NMJ from cutting his head off.
In a flash, a figure in a radiantly white robe darted out of the forest. It was like Meng Yao had laid eyes on a god. He immediately scrambled over behind him. “Zewu-jun!! Zewu-jun!!” Nie Mingjue was so overwhelmed with rage that he didn’t even ask why Lan Xichen was suddenly here. He bellowed, “Xichen, get out of the way!” Baxia bore down on them so menacingly that Shuoyue had no choice but to leave its sheath. Lan Xichen moved to meet him, partly to support him and partly to stop him. ... “There’s no need to doubt it,” Lan Xichen said. “The very reason I am here at this moment to assist is because he sent me a message asking me to come. By what other coincidence would I be here?”
-- MDZS Vol. 2, Nie Mingjue's Empathy Flashback
JGY saved LXC's life and allowed him to return to the Cloud Recesses and lead his clan into war against the Wen Clan. LXC defended JGY against NMJ and presented the evidence that allowed JGY to be rehabilitated into society and claim his place as a hero of the Sunshot campaign.
Genuinely tragic for LXC that what he thought was a friendship of mutual support and affection was actually a debt to be used for leverage against him.
He inhaled deeply, then rasped out, “But never have I ever wanted to hurt you!”
-- MDZS Vol. 5, Jin Guangyao at Guanyin Temple
Also kind of interesting that JGY seems to think that the lack of desire to inflict harm is what will exonerate him, especially when the fundamental cause of misery in his life stems from a callous disregard of his needs and desires rather than any deliberate malice.
