mmmmmm read a disciple shen yuan/shizun luo binghe fanfic about two days ago where the first chapter was the Immortal Conference arc, and SQQ was the one who had to be pushed into the abyss (he was still the villain) except Luo Binghe was refusing and was like, lowkey losing his mind about SQQ being so close to the edge. SQQ ended up having to be the one to fall in himself because of the system's punishment system. The rest of the fic is leading up to that moment. But like, MMM i've been obsessively thinking about that first chapter for DAYS ever since.

now i've been in svsss for a grand total of *checks watch* a week. but god obsessed with that. I want to write/read a fic where disciple SQQ goes a little nuts down there. Like keep all of the things that make SQQ, SQQ, but just. Throw in a little bit more trauma in there. A little bit of a mental break. Let him go a little nuts as a treat. Just a tad unhinged. I wanna see him go, just a little, "god fuck it, i've tried so hard to change this shitty story's outcome and it feels like everything i've done has been for nothing. I'm going to die in this world no matter what I do, I've been doomed from the start, so might as well die the way I want to." and he just, breaks a little! Under all the stress.

He still retains the traits that makes shen yuan, shen yuan, like his overwhelming kindness. But he's just! yk. A little less patient. Paranoid. Jumpy. Colder. A little more aloof and closed off. A little more Shen Jiu. He's no asshole child abuser, but he was a Number One Hater in his past life and he's leaning into that old habit a little more now.

(On a totally coincidental not-at-all related note, there's not enough SJ-and-SY-are-the-same-people fics out there that i've found. This is totally unrelated...)

The Endless Abyss turns the mind into an over-sharpened blade, and SQQ is both fascinated and perhaps a little excited to explore a place that doesn't have a lot of info on it in the mortal realm, but still terrified out of his mind. And he's no Luo Binghe, he doesn't have the sheer brute strength and power to just bulldoze his way through, so he has to be a lot more sneaky and cunning if he wants to survive.

The fic itself role-swapped LBH and SQQ so that SQQ was the half-demon (which lowkey fucks) and LBH the human, but I'm equally-if-not-more obsessed with the idea that LBH remains the half-heavenly demon and SQQ the human. If only because I keep thinking about SQQ befriending some demons (particularly and specifically a group of succubi) and they grow very attached to this Human Cultivator so through magic plot stuff they create some kind of seal/illusion/talisman that makes SQQ appear as a demon because a human cultivator in the endless abyss may as well be the equivalent of putting a giant neon target on your back.

And iirc Shen Jiu was taught demonic cultivation by that one guy(?? i've only been here a week so im not caught up in ALL of the lore yet) so that could totally happen here.

(On the other end of the realms, poor Shizun Luo Binghe is just. losing his fucking mind over losing his most precious and beloved disciple. About .5 seconds from burning down the peaks himself. somebody sedate him.)

The Endless Abyss sucks and SQQ is having a really terrible time and can feel himself going lowkey mad, but also holy shit look at all this WORLD-BUILDING. look at all this flora and fauna, and oh if he had the equipment for it he'd be writing all of this down. ALL OF IT. He was kinda-sorta-already planning on never leaving the Abyss as some sort of fucked up self-exile and self-preservation thing, but now he might? actually just?? never leave if he can help it, like he lowkey likes it down here.

anyways the next time anyone ever sees SQQ again he's got hair so long its almost touching the ground and he's either in rags and half-feral or he's been completely dolled up by his adoptive succubi sisters and still about three seconds from biting anyone who tries to touch him. (he's also lowkey trying to book it back down to the abyss even if he has desperately missed all of his friends and shizun)

I won't lie the scumcumplane AU is in the same AU I made Shen Yuan a fifty year old man before he transmigrated. I didn't mention it because I forgor

He's a well known academic that specializes in classic literature and psychology studies, and is a xianxia nerd in his free time. I'm slightly basing this on a college professor I had (pretty chill guy, like a grandpa and also surprisingly a weeb).

When Shen Yuan transmigrated, he's in the body of a thirty something year old rogue cultivator. He meets Shang Qinghua during a supplies run, and they clock each other as transmigrators instantly. I'd imagine Shen Yuan was Shang Qinghua's professor at some point and probably was a whole sexuality crisis for him (something something silver fox Shen Yuan).

But yeah in this AU Shang Qinghua was working on helping Shen Jiu with varying success, at least the scum villain trusts him. So when Shang Qinghua comes around and introduces a rogue cultivator, he isn't immediately releasing the hounds.

It's a pretty fluffy AU and it has my favorite flavor of Shen Yuan (completely unfazed by everything because he's seen some things).

Him and Shen Jiu bond over literature, and Shen Yuan does clock a few of Shen Jiu's mental health issues and tries to help where he can. Shen Jiu just likes the have occasional pampering and people to complain to.

I just find the idea of Shen Jiu accidentally bagging two (mentally) 50-60 year olds a little amusing. Shen Yuan and Shang Qinghua are complaining about their backs hurting and how they need to take a nap. And then Shen Jiu just slots himself in-between like a cat during its afternoon nap.

If there was murder, I'd imagine the most reaction it'll get from Shen Yuan is "Oh no. We're probably going to have to work on that, aren't we?" He's a professional in his field, he learned how to be unbiased.

So I definitely see Shen Yuan being pretty unfazed by most things because of the things he's helped other people with in the past.

You know what's so great about Shen Jiu? It’s that we don’t have a clue what Shen Jiu would’ve been like if he had a chance to heal from his trauma or was equipped to deal with it. (That includes learning coping mechanisms that don’t involve lashing out on other people and getting the TLC he deserves.) We have already seen him at his worst, I wanna know what he’s like at his best!! The world nerfed him with trauma and angst coz it knew a Shen Jiu with mental stability would be a force to be reckoned with. He embodies the quote “Jupiter was meant to be a star but failed.” This is why I love Shen Jiu fics so much (at least the ones where he heals and all that). No coz I'm not getting over the fact that he used a powerful sword flying technique during the burning of the Qiu manor without practicing it first and only saw it once before just straight up pulling it out of his ass like- Or that he become a peak lord despite every fucking disadvantage thrown at him. Also! I'm pretty sure his spirit roots and cultivation talent was equal to, or even greater than Yue Qingyuan as a kid before it got ripped away from him LIKE WHAT- 

Everyone has their own interpretations of Shen Jiu’s character and it's nice to explore. Ofc I don’t like the way he is in canon. If he was a real person, yall would hate him too. I like Shen Jiu for the potential he had as a person and who he could’ve been. And I like coming up with AUs and ideas for how things could've gone differently for him because, for me, there's something so therapeutic about seeing/writing characters break cycles. Shen Jiu not having done so in SV had a narrative impact by emphasising how people display problematic and violent behaviours in response to trauma. That is why the protagonists and male leads of MXTX novels are written the way that they are, to contrast the villains. Characters like Xie Lian, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are examples of people coping with their trauma positively (semi positively if I'm being honest but the point remains). So excuse me for making Shen Jiu the protagonist in practically all the fics I'm working on lol.

Technically you can’t even say Shen Jiu is OOC for these kinds of SJ fics, coz, again, we don’t know what he’s like if he actually got the help he needed. There's this fic called Residing Over Autumn Leaves, where Shen Jiu’s personality is so malleable that he completely reflects the environment he was around in his earlier years. He suffers through a Qi deviation that actually erases his memories and he becomes a white lotus Jiumei. It’s because he was in Qing Jing peak most of the time and all his disciples and martial siblings protected him. And then there’s fics like The Hidden Flower, and the Memories Remembered series. Those speak for themselves. I'm assuming yall read them coz they're pretty much the most popular Shen Jiu fics on AO3 lol. 

Btw, I am NOT looking to argue with anyone over smt like this. Like YES I know what he did, and made sure I had that info (coz the spreading of misinformation is wild).

But I hope it's at least undeniable that he deserved to heal for what the Qiu's and Wu Yanzi put him thru??

No cause I actually feel so bad for Qiu Haitang cause she really was just a spoiled and naive girl who fell in love (with a slave, a victim still) and after only one night (and a whole hell in between, in SJ eyes) all his family was murdered by the love of her life and her house reduced to ashes.

Not only that, but fucking decades later (and a whole life in another reality) she discovers the love of her life has long forgotten her (he didn't, though, he just wasn't there anymore) and she's forced to face the truth about what her family truly did to deserve such fate.

If you go to ao3 and read wangxian fics from the earliest to the latest, you can almost pinpoint exactly when cql hit the English-speaking fandom because 1) Wangxian’s dynamic changes, 2) Wei Wuxian’s potrayal in fics ubdergoes an extreme shift into what is now his mainstream fanon today, and 2) Jiang Cheng starts appearing. Not fanon!Jiang Cheng, but Jiang Cheng, period.

In the earliest fics, he is very rare to find, and where he appears, it is only a mention or a brief cameo. After cql, though? Suddenly he is a major character in fics. Suddenly every fic features him, even if it’s just through letters or Wei Wuxian playacting convos with him when he’s physically absent for whatever reason. Suddenly, “yunmeng bros,” “yunmeng trio,” “twin prides” takes off. Suddenly it’s Wen Qing siding with Jiang Cheng and berating Wei Wuxian for being a stupid idiot. Suddenly it’s Lan Wangji forcing Wei Wuxian to reconcile with his “brother,” if it isn’t Wei Wuxian threatening Lan Wangji to get along with Jiang Cheng or be dumped. Suddenly it’s weepy Wei Wuxian crippled by the guilt of having “stolen” affection away from Jiang Cheng as a child, of having “broken his promise” of eternal servitude brotherhood, a crime that needs the entire fic to rectify, even if the fic is about something else entirely. Suddenly it’s “if only Wei Wuxian had listened to Jianng Cheng’s advice (that he never gave), none of this would have happened!”

There is a palpable shift in how every character is treated once Jiang Cheng became a fandom favorite, and it’s actually made the experience of reading fics worse as a whole.

I love how similar yet different Blackwater lure Eclipse and Naga SJ!Eclipse are.

They both become obsessed with photographer y/n after they see y/n appreciate nature, they both are technically alone due to certain circumstances (if SJ Eclipse had cut off his relations with his brothers in this AU as well), and they both want y/n’s attention.

However, Naga SJ Eclipse was the reason he lost his companionship with his family (again if we are using some of the original Sleuth Jester story), while BL!Eclipse is alone because of circumstances outside of his control (if I’m getting apex polarity’s lore correct. I’m still very behind due to school and work but have been trying to keep up with the outside lore snippets).

Additionally, Naga SJ Eclipse’s “admiration” of photographer y/n does not mean they won’t get hurt. In fact, it’s likely what causes them to be hurt by Naga SJ because he associates love with his violent tendencies (i.e. bruising y/n and threatening them). BL!Eclipse admires y/n but is against hurting them and instead chooses to try and engage y/n in their work and gift them with things such as food and showing them amazing places.

Anyways, I think if both Blackwater Lure and Naga SJ Eclipses existed in the same universe they would have an extremely intense rivalry with them both being obsessive over y/n and Blackwater Lure not being happy with SJ hurting y/n.

Oh ho, these two would hate each other's guts not least due to them both claiming the photographer. Neither are okay with sharing, either.

SJ and BL follow their OG counterparts with issues and relations, so both are alone, possessive, and very, very territorial. You're correct to point out how they contrast and mirror each other regarding Y/N.

BL!Eclipse grabs Y/N to take them to a beautiful clearing in the river where the water runs clear and every arapaima fish appears under the glittering surface. SJ!Eclipse grabs Y/N to force them to listen when he is, once again, monologing about what they will do for him once they understand that he is all they need.

BL!Eclipse takes Y/N's camera to carefully look at each photo before giving it back. SJ!Eclipse takes Y/N's camera with the threat of keeping it or breaking it. BL!Eclipse coils around Y/N to make them take a nap with him after seeing how tired they look. SJ!Eclipse coils around Y/N to ensure they can't run while he pokes their cheeks and tugs on their hair at his amusement. You can imagine how the list goes on.

If SJ Naga Eclipse exists in the same jungle as BL Eclipse, it would essentially boil down to who can get rid of who first, and once BL Eclipse learns who's been marking his photographer with bruises... It would not be pretty.

absolutely no sleepovers allowed (his pre-cqms backstory is enough of an explanation as to why he has this rule)

has to have the best grades out of everyone in cqms (if sqq became the peak lord of qj after only starting his education in his pre-teens, beating out other pl candidates who’ve been studying for longer than him, then his kid can at least beat out the other cqms disciples in grades)

location must be shared at all times (again, his pre-cqms backstory is enough of an explanation as to why he has this rule)

as long as his kid living under his roof, dating is strictly prohibited, the gender doesn’t matter (if he’s still hung up over that one person he had a disastrous homoerotic friendship with (yqy), then who is his child to be happy and in love in his house, huh?)

if they’re going to cause trouble at least do it in a way where they won’t get caught (honestly sqq would be more mad about his kid getting caught beating someone up unlike normal parents who would be pissed that their kid was beating someone up (he’s definitely the type of parent who’d be like “did you at least win?” whenever his kid comes home after getting into a fight and would be mad if his kid lost the fight))
