ok back to that time travel au
it doesn't take long before people begin to point out the inconsistencies between sy's and sj's behavior with suspicion. after all, sy's generally sunny disposition is rather striking when compared to sj's aloofness and cold expressions. that could be attributed to a life-changing event or enlightenment, but still, people gossip, and with sj's reputation, they talk about it badly.
so sy, in a panic, tries to subtly show his similarities with sj. it doesn't go very well, like all his plans. but when he does give up, they are suddenly very similar.
sy, fussing over the junior disciples of qing jing peak: do you remember what to do?
yqy, about to reassure sy that the disciples will be safe on their one day field trip with qiong ding's disciples: ?
the disciples: make sure we always have our robes and guans with protective arrays on! also create a protective array on the ground and on our tents and ban intruders! never agree to anything qiong ding says and keep everything we say vague! always establish an oath if we do agree to anything. and if they try to hurt us, kill them and go to shizun because he will take care of it!
sy, proud: good.
yqy, remembering sj's paranoia: *worry intensifies*
qqq, in a peak lord meeting: so there is this one disciple i have that has a horrible, abusive husband. she's planning on running away, will it be feasible for qiong ding and an ding to create a new identity for her?
sy, reading a book bc all pl meetings are boring past or present or future: she should kill her husband. brutally. piece of shit.
the peak lords: ...
sy, an overprotective brother to one adorable and troublemaking little sister: should burn down the household too before she leaves. better yet, fake her death in the fire.
sj, strangely proud and comforted bc this kinder version of him also has his viciousness: and make sure there are no witnesses and evidence left behind.
sy, remembering qiu haitang, staring at sj: yes. make sure there are no witnesses left behind.
#svsss#shen yuan#shen jiu#shen twins#time travel (1) au#sy tells yqy to fuck off once and immediately feels bad bc yqy looked like a kicked puppy#sj asks him why bc sy's usually so receptive to yqy's kindness#sy while sweating: idk sometimes i just feel very angry around him#sj in a /srs kind of tone: sy are you—#sy thinking: busted#sj: are you an amnesiac version of me#sy: ...maybe?#funniest amnesia reveal ever#i said so

Amnesia!Dabi: it’s like in Miraculous Ladybug, if near the end, someone told Gabriel that one of the Miraculous he'd been searching for was in his house the whole damn time. AfO has decided that Toya wandered off somewhere to die, when he shows up at the hideout. Questioning reveals he's spent the past few years basically down the street from the bar. He’s probably passed it hundreds of times. He’s likely on security footage. AfO can just FEEL his brother laughing at him.
Oh 100% if Yoichi ever finds out (and he fucking will), he's going to be laughing so hard.
Also like I said it before but the funniest part of this is just that AfO couldn't predict the amnesia.
When Toya disappears from the sketch ass clinic, of course he tries to track the guy down. But he's looking in places 'Toya' would go. Back to his family, to any of his friends, to places like UA.
Meanwhile 'Dabi' has no clue who those people are or where to find them so he's just hanging out in the dumpster out back.

Hi, shout-out to Ocellus, who is arguably my funniest oc yet.
In his universe Angels and Demons (and Ghosts, but they're not tooooo involved) are basically like two factions ruling over the same territory. Certain, very skilled, Angels and Demons are sent down to the human realm as secret agents p much to spy and sabatoge eachother. Everyone who's Angel/Demon knows the rules and junk. That's just how it goes.
Ocellus, is an angel. He has absolutely *no idea* about any of this.
His angel powers? He's just weird, so he hides it. He doesn't seem to age? Absolutely banger skincare abd witk-out routine ig. Showed up one day w/o any memories, already like 21 and in uni? Well, the prof says he has a history of amnesia, so that must be it.
Like, he encounters a demon (his name changes ever 5 minutes istg, I always forget), and the Demon's out here sensing a cocky newbie and tries to con info out of him and like, Ocellus is just genuinely so clueless. Not a single thought in his head. It confuses the Demon so much that he literally just exposes that he's a demon and Ocellus is like, "Ohhh my God, you have those powers too??? Ur like me????" And the Demon is so baffled.
Ocellus isn't meant to be in the mortal realm, no one knows how he got there, and Heaven is trying to reclaim him. It just turns into the demon and Ocellus teaming up. The demon teaches Ocellus about what's going on, and Ocellus just doesn't want to go back to Heaven because "I have friends here, and a job, and *you* (referring to demon). I don't want to lose that." So the two of them are constantly evading the angels, while the demon tries not to reveal to his demon-bretheren that he's very much harboring *cough*dating*cough* an angel.
And by the end of it they're both like... idk, I never got that far, but it probably ends w/ Ocellus trying to give himself up for the Demon's sake, he gets wounded, and the demon flees w/ him to Purgatory (spirit realm) where the conflict isn't allowed to reach. They give up their mortal forms + rights to Heaven/Hell respectively, but retain most of their powers despite becoming Ghosts.
If that ending did happen, I like to think that every lifetime or so they'd take up being the guardians of a random human in need and then, like, manifest around them a bunch and be horrible influences.
Human's about to do skydiving and Ocellus and Demon are standing (invisible to others) right behind them like, O: "You know, skydiving is really fun, I tried it once back in the day!" D: "Yeah, but like, do they have the budget to afford doing stuff like this?" O: "Of course! It's good to get out and try new things, it can motivate them." D: "Won't motivate them if they don't have money for rent, 'Cellus " and the human just has to listen to their persistent bickering the whole time lmao---

Sorry if this has been asked before, but favorite Ace Attorney game?
hiya! nice pfp omg we are handshaking on the pride flag nitw character icons
i don't think this has been asked actually! for me it's kind of a close run between Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations, Apollo Justice Ace Attorney, and Investigations 2.
I love T&T because it feels like a really satisfying end to the main trilogy, bridge to the turnabout is a work of art and i really do like 98% of the characters you interact with. Godot is my 2nd favorite character in the entire series and it's really cool seeing how Mia defends vs Phoenix, and I love Dahlia a lot. Iris is also another favorite character so, yeah. T&T is just a really well executed game with a lot of satisfying parts imo.
on the other hand... okay Apollo Justice is not anywhere near as satisfying, the Jurist System doesn't really make sense or even exist after the game, the character writing of Beanix is... questionable at best, et cetera. however I ADORE the characters and think that the game has some of my favorite actual trials? Like, I adore Turnabout Corner SO much I know it's one of the most forgettable cases but it's so funny to me because it's just... Apollo having the worst fucking week of his life. Plus Turnabout Serenade has like one of THE FUNNIEST trials and it's kind of Klavier's version of Worst Fucking Week. Klavier is my favorite character (so mad we don't get more of him in later games) and I like Kristoph a lot as a character too. Trucy is so fun and I love Apollo (espec bc this precedes his fifty tragic backstories arc, etc.) All in all just. Yeah! i like it :D it makes me happiest and I think I'm more fixated on this game than any other game in the series.
Finally, investigations 2 which is just. One of the best objective games. Disclaimer that i didn't see like every single case and I mostly watched parts of it with my sister, but I did see the entirety of the final case and HOLY SHIT. I think T&T does a good job wrapping up the entire series, but Investigations 2 is even more incredible with creating a game that concludes so so neatly in the most bizarre way. I love Franziska's characterization in thsi game more than any of the other games in the series, I really like Sebastian's character, Justine Courtney is also really amazing and I love her as like a rival. Simon Keyes is ANOTHER favorite character of mine and I genuinely think that the culmination of the final case is the best reveal of a murderer that the series has ever had. Like Godot was good but the way that I2 ends is like... its SO good. I love it so much. There are parts of the game I don't like as much -- I hate the Kay amnesia plotline in case 3 (?) it was really annoying and also my first exposure to her character so I hated her for a bit -- but overall love love love this game
sorry that was really long. the TLDR is that I think T&T and I2 have the best writing in the franchise, but AJ has more personal happiness factor for me. Also I haven't played Chronicles yet but I know damn well that that would be my favorite were I too so like take this qith a grain of salt

Got tagged by @scarvenartist to give my top ten male characters! :) Thank you!
Clint Barton Hawkeye! Barely functional hot mess of a man held together with bandaids, somehow holding his own among Earth’s mightiest heroes. MCU Clint is great too, but the Fraction comics? Amazing.
Rincewind the Wizzard from Discworld. Failure at both magic and spelling, but you’ll never beat him in a foot race. The first coward protagonist I ever met, and he makes it sound so practical while still partaking in some definite (grudging) heroism.
Bertie Wooster. Delightful idiot son. Good hearted and barely-spined. Wonderful-terrible taste in clothing. I crave a modern remake.
Donald Duck. Fury personified (duckified?) I love his rage. His incompetence in the simplest tasks. In the new DuckTales, I love his parenting. His inability to hold down a job but insistence on doing what’s right for his boys. Best uncle ❤️❤️❤️
Rory Williams from Doctor Who. Just a good, good man. So steadfast. Amazing husband. Beautiful and worthy.
Howell Jenkins from Howl's Moving Castle! I read the book in college while I was taking Welsh so That Reveal about knocked me over. Welsh rugby playing wizard is the best version always.
Lord Peter Wimsey. Deeply devoted and passionate, highly intelligent and literate, only flaw is he’s too good at too much.
Albert Campion, for the times I want a Golden Era gentleman detective who's a little less perfect, more mysterious, and more restrained. (Until the amnesia anyway)
Young Hawkes, the vicar from Emma M Lion. Incredibly sympathetic and somewhat uncanny. I love his association with the Reprobates, his friendship with Emma, Islington and Pierce. I love his "sermons" even when they're not just poetry. I love that he always seems to know what's going on with Emma, and not only when Cousin Archibald confesses her sins. I love how he responds to everything. I'm dying to know more about his past. Anything, really.
Schmidt from New Girl. All the men in this show are incredible and different and weird. But Schmidt might be the funniest character I've ever seen. There is a lot to dislike about him but even early on he's clearly more than his first impression and running gags. He changes so much! He's such a weirdo! He's the Worst but has such an incredible proposal.
I think a lot of people have already done this - @melliabee , have you? If not, tagging you - and I haven't forgotten the other thing you tagged me on. :)
Anyone else is welcome to do it as well! I never know who to tag.
#about half of these are deeply flawed#but that's what makes them compelling#whereas Rory is compelling because he's SO GOOD#no idea about Hawkes and I'm going wild just thinking about him#he's such an UNKNOWN

100 Days My Prince Review
Warning: Spoilers
Rating: 3/3
I love this drama. It is the first K-drama I’ve ever watched. I would rewatch this and recommend it to anyone that likes historical or romantic dramas.
Summary
I-Seo and Yul were childhood friends, but became separated through the lust for power of the adults around them. Fifteen years later the two meet again under different identities. Prince Yul has been attacked by his father-in-law, but survives. Yul is found on the outskirts of a small village by the smoke signal operator Mr. Yeon. He is actually the man that adopted I-Seo after the insurrection, when her parents died. She now goes by the name, Hong Shim.
Prince Yul got amnesia after he was attacked. Before he got attacked he made a decree for all single adults in the kingdom to get married. The headstrong Hong Shim is the last unmarried person in her village. If she does not become a nobleman’s concubine she will be flogged to death. To save her from this punishment Mr. Yeon brings Yul under the alias Won-deuk, and offers him as a man for Hong Shim to marry.
Can these two strangers live as man and wife? Will their past identities be revealed? Will the powers that be keep them apart?
Likes
-This is the funniest drama. There were so many good jokes about Won-deuk not being a good husband.
-The acting, everyone did a really good job. D.O. had the right emotions for his character Yul / Won-deuk. Nam Jihyun and Kim Seon Ho were very good as well.
-The love story between Yul and I-Seo was very cute.
-So many high energy fighting scenes
-The sets and costumes looked realistic
-The drama showed how the different classes lived in that time. A lot of time the royals made things more difficult for poor villagers.
-I liked the love triangle between Won-deuk, Hong Shim and Jung Jae Yoon. Jae Yoon was a good second lead. For a few episodes I wanted him to end up with Hong Shim.
-I liked the little cartoon bear and rabbit in the outro.
Dslikes
-The ending. Yul basically had to beg I-Seo to marry him. It felt like he was so in love with her, but she really didn’t care that much about him. I know her character was very independent and didn’t want to be a princess, but the ending could have been a little more romantic.
-The death of Cha-eon happens too soon in episode 16. It made the rest of the episode quite anticlimactic.
Favorites
Favorite Characters
-Jung Jae Yoon: he was an interesting character. He was in between the noble world and peasant world, because he was the son of a concubine. His character was so funny and charming. It was so cute that he couldn’t remember most faces, but he remembered Hong Shim’s. This character is the reason for my Kim Seon Ho obsession(love).
-Mr. Yeon: He was so funny. He had the best facial expressions. Every decision he made as a character was to protect his daughter Hong Shim. I was really endeared by that.
Favorite Scenes
-When I-Seo sneaks into the palace to visit Yul and makes him porridge. I thought that was the sweetest thing.
-When So-Hye is in the cottage with her baby. We can hear the retelling of the dandelion story that Seok-Ha told her. It is such a beautiful scene.

I finished Curious Village again the other day, so here are some random thoughts. This is my first time replaying the main series since my... mid-to-late teen years? (though I guess it was later than I thought, if AL didn’t come out till 2014... I’m 25 now) so my memory of the fine details of them is a little hazy.
Flora really is wasted in the next two games, isn’t she... She’s introduced as part of the crew by the end of the game, especially with the additional epilogue cutscene in the hd version, but she literally gets the Kairi treatment, being left behind or used as a damsel for no discernable reason, when she could easily be just as capable as Luke... I mean she’s older than him, there’s no reason she couldn’t handle herself on their adventures if he can. -___- And like Kairi, I want to be more invested in her, but she barely has any focus and development, and it’s just ugh. I kind of like that it makes sense why Hershel would be so distant with her/not know how to parent properly, but I wish that was actually explored, and it’s not, so everyone ignoring her is just annoying and unnecessary-feeling instead. Tbh I’d rather her have just stayed behind altogether in the next two games instead of showing up just to be kidnapped or impersonated, if she wasn’t going to be made a main party member permanently.
People have said this before, but the main trilogy is honestly made so much better with knowledge of the prequels, in both emotional and absolutely buckwild ways, and it’s the funniest with CV - going from Azran Legacy straight into the mundane Curious Village is absolutely fucking HILARIOUS, as completely unintentional as it was by Level-5 lmaoooo
Hershel, after the shitshow that was Azran Legacy: “oh thank god, just an inheritance dispute.” Luke, who is easily impressed and apparently gets selective amnesia after every game: “THIS IS THE BIGGEST MYSTERY WE’LL EVER SOLVE-” Hershel, this close to murdering Luke a second time:
Can we make some connection between Bruno’s robot-making abilities and the Azran technology. And does the whole robot thing seriously trigger the boys as soon as it’s revealed because DEAR GOD NO NOT THIS AGAIN-
And related to that, I’m sure that was why Hershel could easily guess the robot thing early on; like seriously, nothing should faze this man anymore after what he’s been through (and yet, hilariously, the most ridiculous has yet to come, depending on how you look at it)
But he doesn’t have the faintest idea why Don Paolo would want revenge on him, which, like, even if he can’t think of anything specific... my dude, your family history is fucked up a;lsdlf;fd, there’s PLENTY OF OPTIONS (even if the actual reason is much less severe lol)
I’m sure we also all headcanon Descole to be slinking around in the background of the three main games somehow just because it’s more fun that way, so now that he’s no longer the rival, he’s the rival-turned-secret helper who makes sure everything goes right for Hershel (but he doesn’t do everything obviously cause he knows he can handle things himself), and probably bitchfights with Don Paolo some because that mental image is hilarious to me lmao
Post-UF scenario where Desmond helps Bruno with the robots with his technical prowess
and while we’re on that idea, Uncle Randall nerds out over everything robot in St. Mystere because let’s be real he would (Azran 2.0: Electric Boogaloo, But Without The Danger Or Trauma)
That scene when the tower is collapsing and Flora almost falls and Hershel catches her. Level-5 how could you completely accidentally and unintentionally create something so utterly painful out of such a small moment; I lie awake at night thinking about this!! :)))
Also Hershel yelling to Luke in that scene “I HAVE AN IDEYAHHH!” with his accent going off the rails on “idea” is an underrated iconic moment
Am I the only one who got the quiz question about Chelmey’s favorite food wrong because the answer was cakes something, and whatever the newspaper said it was was definitely not what I’d consider a cake
I love the implication that Pavel(?) is the only person in St Mystere besides Hershel, Luke, Don Paolo, Flora and Bruno who’s not a robot, and he just somehow ended up there by unknown means while trying to get to America??? and then somehow ends up on a high floor of the LOCKED tower, and still has no idea where tf he is. what a madlad
I never liked Luke’s squeaky UK voice, but I’m realizing his US one isn’t much better... and Flora’s voice in the new epilogue cutscene with the same voice actress years later is oof. why do the PL games just. reuse the same vas constantly for different characters. It’s obviously a thing in anime and games, but it’s especially noticeable in this series imo
fuck those puzzles with troll-y answers. also fuck that one with the chocolate bar and the coded letters with the bite marks
Matthew is probably one of my favorite npcs now; he’s just adorable <333 his little arms waggin’
Gordon needs to get a life
Pauly why are you the way that you are
“I’m not a detective”, Hershel continually says, as he unveils ridiculous plots that no one could have thought up in their wildest dreams, while gathering everyone together and pointing out the culprits dramatically, Agatha Christie style
I was tapping around for the exact pixel on painting Flora’s neck because it was ridiculously precise on the mobile version, and I never knew that if you tap her chest area, Hershel scolds Luke for not being a gentleman I-
Luke’s chubby head in the anime cutscenes sure is something... so glad it didn’t last. along with the front-facing Hershel sprite.
The ferris wheel attack is so great, I never really appreciated it before. The music, and the rain at the end with the rainbow 👌
We needed more of Hershel constructing things from random objects he finds lying around; iirc the only other time he does it is in Eternal Diva, though I guess the slot machine gun in UF counts too
I solved every slider puzzle in this game without a walkthrough, even the bonus ones. I do not expect this to last in the next games.
Overall I like Curious Village, though it remains one of my least favorites; there’s nothing wrong with it, and it was the very first so I’m not surprised it’s not very complex, with the mechanics and style still not fleshed out yet, but it doesn’t really hit me with The Feels™ as the best ones do, so it’s just okay. it started this wild ride of complete emotional devastation off, so I can appreciate it for that at least.
#professor layton#professor layton spoilers#watch me come back and edit this games later once i realize/remember more things about the series#'AND ANOTHER THING-'

Olicity Tropetastic Awards: Felicity Smoak
The show might be about Oliver’s journey, but we wouldn’t have Arrow without Felicity. We laughed with her, we cried with her, we grew with her, and we swooned over Oliver with her. Surely, she’s one of the most relatable and popular characters on TV. But for many of us, she became a friend.
This one’s for the hacker, the badass, the love of Oliver Queen’s life. Here’s to the ICONIC Felicity Megan Smoak!

GOOD THINGS FOR APRIL 5TH, 2019:
“Netflix's live-action adaptation of the Cowboy Bebop anime has just dropped its first big casting reveal: Harold and Kumar star John Cho is playing series lead, the bounty hunter (and cool guy) known as Spike; Luke Cage star Mustafa Shakir is playing Jet Black, Spike's partner and captain of the Bebop ship; and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom star Daniella Pineda will play Faye Valentine, a bounty hunter with cryo-freeze amnesia who forms of tenuous partnership with Spike and Jet Black. Also included in the casting announcement is Alex Hassell as Vicious, Spike's ex-partner who becomes his arch-enemy, as the Synidcate's best (read: most ruthless) hitman.” (x) I am cautiously intrigued by this now!
I’ve been watching a lot of animal videos on YouTube and Tumblr whenever I just need a dose of cute and fluffy feelings. TheDodo is especially good for this and I’ve recently enjoyed: - Teeniest Bulldog Puppy Couldn't Stop Spinning in Circles - Hidden Camera Catches Cat Comforting Anxious Dog While Family's Away - Half-Pound Pittie Puppy Grows Up with His 90-Pound Foster Brother - Grumpy Street Cat LOVES Being A Grandpa To Foster Kittens - GRANDPA MASON - Watch This Kitten Grow Up with a Pit Bull - Shitmageddon - Funniest Cats And Dogs! I’ve been catching up on Star Wars comics a lot lately and, okay, not all of them are hits, some of them are fairly lackluster or else just not for me, but there are a lot of them are just knocking things out of the park. The two I never expected to love as much as I do are Poe Dameron and Doctor Aphra, both of which aren’t necessarily my favorites, so I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about them. And, in part, that’s why I’m so over the moon for them, because they’re telling stories that do a ton of the connective work and worldbuilding work between the movies, they’re fleshing out the galaxy incredibly well, but they’re also just making me intensely invested in these characters and the shit they go through. Poe is a hero and getting to see him struggling with really finding his role as a leader, as told by Charles Soule, is supremely satisfying and legit hilarious in all the right moments. I can absolutely hear Oscar Isaac in the role and, when combining this with his appearances on Resistance, Poe is becoming one of those characters that I light up every time he’s around. Aphra, in contrast, is a disaster and kind of an actually terrible person, she really hurts a lot of people, but at the same time, she’s magnetic and engaging and genuine. The blending of all those things, as well as the hilarious side characters, the sheer sense of batshit antics that she gets into, the galactic-level adventures, the really excellent use of Vader cameos (I was crying during everything he did during the Immortal Rur arc, god, I love that human garbage bag), all of it is exactly the kind of thing I’m here for. But my favorites of recent times (now that Dark Lord of the Sith is over, which is easily one of my absolute favorite things Star Wars has ever put out, because it’s an incredible look into the psychology of Anakin Skywalker as Darth Vader) have been all the Age of Republic comics by Jody Houser, where I don’t think there was a single issue that went by that I didn’t have a “!!!!” reaction over or have a ton to say about how good they were. They’re character illustrations and had really great character moments (Obi-Wan and bb!Anakin having a conversation about Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Anakin having a conversation at the beginning of the war, Grievous facing the Jedi Temple and what it showed him about himself, Padme’s complicated behavior in the war, balancing her secret marriage against her desire to make a difference, etc.) and were supremely satisfying. I’ll be curious to see if Age of Rebellion can live up to them!
I’m almost through the Star Wars: Queen’s Shadow audiobook (after having read the book a couple of weeks ago) and, despite my complicated feelings, ultimately, I think I liked the book. If nothing else, having a book that clearly loves her character, that’s not about her getting sucked into Anakin’s story, but instead truly revolving around herself and the characters that are extensions of her, that makes me really happy.

The 100 rewatch: 2x15 Blood Must Have Blood, Part One
I’m a bit behind with these write-ups and slightly with my rewatch. Real life and real work is getting in the way. I’ve rewatched 3x01 and 3x02, but I’ll have to start watching more episodes per day to have enough time to finish this before the season 6 premiere. These write-ups are going to be shorter starting from season 3 (which is also great because it’s season 3 and I really have no wish to go into most of it in detail), I’ll try to just do bullet points. But first I have to cover something much, much better - the season 2 finale. Though actually this episode is just an intro, the next one is the real deal.
Blood Must Have Blood, Part One is an episode that seems just like what we would imagine a season finale to be: tactics, preparations for a big battle, ensemble episode where we see pretty much every character, all of them in various places. Clarke’s plan is great, and it seems like we would get the perfect ending we wanted, with the Arkers and the Grounders working together – saving everyone, punishing the guilty regime of Mount Weather, saving the innocent people from Mount Weather - children and the rebels. We are made to feel afraid whether this or that part of the plan would work. And then there’s the big twist – and I have an unpopular opinion about that.
But Part One is just the setup for Part Two, the greatest episode of the show.
Rating: 9/10
My favorite, and most emotional parts of this episode, are the scenes with the Mount Weather residents who are helping the Delinquents and hiding them, and then get brutally killed by Mount Weather guards as “traitors”. Especially the scene where Jasper naïvely reveals himself to the guard to save the couple who were hiding him and Maya, when the guard threatened to kill them – and then he goes to kill them anyway – because of course he does.
These are just some of the many things in this finale that give strong vibes of Mount Weather as the closest thing that The 100 has to Third Reich. Although the Mountain Men at least had a legitimate motivation and weren’t just racist idiots. The 100 is often terrible when it tries to make any political parallels (see: season 3), but this was one of the few times it worked: Mountain Men worked really well as villains – as a society, they were close to pure evil, as technological version of vampires and stand-in for anything from imperialism, colonialism (yes, you bozos in the fandom who call the refugees/exiles in this story “colonizers”, you had evil colonials there all the time and you somehow didn’t notice) to, yes, Nazis.
I love the fact that Dante always knew who was the real driving force behind the alliance and who could destroy Mount Weather (Cage: “I underestimated the Commander.” - Dante: “It’s not the Commander, it’s Clarke.”
Why didn’t we ever learn more about the Reaper that Indra recognized? He was obviously someone important to her. She had probably thought he was dead. Maybe it was her husband/Gaia’s father? The scenes were so literally dark that it was impossible to make out any features, they may have even planned to introduce him at some point? Octavia said: “Abby will help him”. So what happened to the Reapers after Lexa’s betrayal? Why didn’t we ever find out? This is the dropped plot that has always bugged me the most.
Indra says to Octavia that Lincoln has always questioned their ways. This made me think about what an odd couple Lincoln and Octavia are. He always questioned the Grounder customs and philosophy of war and violence, but Octavia loves war and violence and adores the Grounder ways even though she’s not one of them. It makes me wonder how their relationship would have developed if he had lived. After all, she fell in love with him when she knew him just as a hot Grounder, he was the first to teach her Grounder fighting and language (but that was before she found Indra as her mentor), and in season 3, she was disappointed when he was integrating into Arkadia and wearing the Arker uniform.
Watching Maya escape death by the guards when you know she’s going to die anyway is painful. One of the sad ironic moments is when Jasper told her “We won’t let anything happen to you” while Bellamy was there.
It’s so weird to see all the screentime that the Raven/Wick romance got, since it eventually get dropped for BTS reasons (as they should).
Speaking of romance – Lexa said she made her decision to betray Clarke with her head rather than her heart… but I’m not fully convinced. The last episode, they kissed, the chemistry was there, but Clarke said she wasn’t ready for a relationship. Lexa was asking Clarke what she wanted after the battle, and Clarke said “Nothing… My people back. I can’t think past today” and was evasive in a nice way when Lexa made a not-so-subtle overture by asking her to come to Polis with her. When Lexa later explained her betrayal by saying she did what Clarke would do, it kind of seemed like she was calling back to what Clarke said earlier and that she wasn’t happy about it. But, Clarke, why do you love them more than meeee?
The idea that Clarke would have done the same is BS (but a convenient way for Lexa to justify her actions) – Clarke wanted to defeat Mount Weather and save everyone. She first decided they were evil when she saw what they were doing to the Grounders.
But let’s talk a bit more about Lexa’s deal with the Mountain Men, the supposedly wise “head” decision. Smart idea on Dante’s part. Not a smart decision on Lexa’s part.
And that’s my unpopular opinion. I think it’s one of the worst decisions any leader has made on the show. Of course, it had to happen for the plot to work. Lexa was a supporting guest star whose role was to push the protagonists in a certain direction. But the show only presents her decision as bad from the moral point of view (at most) and she only finally (kind of) apologized for it to Clarke 3 seasons later when she was long dead and a part of the flame, but that was all in terms of a personal betrayal of someone you love. I guess I’m supposed to think that it’s a wise strategic decision…and the writers tried their best to justify that decision in their interviews, but I found their arguments ridiculous.
Isn’t Lexa supposed to be a strong, ruthless commander? So why does she walk away from a crucial battle and unique chance to defeat an old, powerful, mortal enemy that has been doing horrible things to her people for decades? It’s not like she’s unable to deal with the fact that people die in battle or that she cares for each of her people personally - on the contrary, she’s all about the big picture, ready to sacrifice a few hundred of her people to win the war. She let a bomb drop on them, so it’s not like she can’t deal with the fact that warriors die in battle. Did she think they wouldn’t win? That’s a risk you always take in war, and as it turns out, in the end it took three people (and Monty’s technological know-how) to destroy the Mountain Men. So, she got it very wrong. When someone is offering you a deal, especially someone powerful and arrogant, it’s a sure sign they’re desperate and in a weak position, which they were. It means you can finish them off. Lexa is talked about as this great leader, but she hasn’t actually won any battles or wars on screen, other than her duel with Roan. She may have beaten other Grounder clans in wars we didn’t see. But she attacked the Delinquents, thinking them a weak enemy, and lost. She walked away instead of fighting the Mountain Men, and they were defeated by Clarke, Bellamy and Monty.
The argument that it was a good decision because the Mountain Men let her people go, is based on short-term thinking, without any thought to long-term consequences: 1) the Mountain Men were not going to suddenly become nice and stop oppressing others just because they didn’t need their blood anymore, anyone who thinks otherwise is incredibly naïve – they were used to being overlords and felt incredibly entitled and superior; 2) by foregoing the chance to defeat them, letting them regroup and allowing them to be able to also go to the surface, you’re letting them become even more powerful, 3) there’s no way that the Grounders weren’t going to want revenge against the Mountain Men.* That was never going to end well. Grounders should feel lucky and grateful that “Wanheda” killed them. Otherwise they’d be in trouble. (The funniest argument by the writers is that Lexa decided to make a deal because she could destroy the Mountain Men later. LOL what? The Mountain Men had been doing whatever they wanted to the Grounders for decades. If she had been able to destroy them, she would have long time ago.) But as it turns out that the Arkers won… well, that also had consequences: the Arkers didn’t exactly trust the Grounders and Lexa specifically in season 3, and it’s not hard to see why – lack of trust tends to be the consequence of previous betrayal.
*Unless they don’t, inexplicably, because the plot requires it. And this is one other reason why I’m not crazy about this plot point – it’s the first sign of the kind of bad writing that happens a lot in season 3, where Grounders especially act in contradictory ways all the time. Here they are extremely obedient to their Commander and immediately all leave. In season 3, after a couple of episodes, they develop amnesia about the Mountain Men and don’t seem care about any revenge even when they capture Emerson, but at the same time they’re super into revenge against the Arkers… Just like they were really into revenge earlier in season 2 with Finn. And suddenly they become very rebellious and willing to go against the Commander over not taking revenge on the Arkers. But what happened to “Blood must have blood” when it comes to Mountain Men? Lincoln said in 2x08 that Lexa would be killed by her own people If she spared Finn. But they’re OK with not getting any revenge against Mount Weather, in season 2 and in season 3 when it’s very easy to get it on the captive Emerson. There’s no explanation other than “plot-induced behavior”.
But I guess this twist had to exist so we would get Part Two.
Body count:
A number of Grounders and Mount Weather guards killed in fighting at the dam and the ridge, one of the latter was killed by Wick (apparently his first kill).
Several of the Mount Weather people who were helping the Deliquents. Including the c couple who were hiding Jasper and Maya, Mr. and Ms. Peters, murdered by a Mount Weather guard, Paul Tiling)
Paul Tiling, who apparently was some sort of a friend or at least acquaintance of Vincent Vie but was going to kill him to take Maya – but was killed by Bellamy; another guard, who was killed by Miller.
Vincent Vie, killed off-screen by the Mount Weather guards. He got saved earlier in the episode just so his daughter could later find his dead body.
Another “traitor” killed by the guards: Ms Ryan, who was hiding Monty,
Several Arkers and a lower number of Mount Weather guards died In the fighting when Emerson with a group of guards captured a group of Arkers who were planning a rescue mission. I’m not sure if this counts, since it happened during the timeline of Part One, but we only learned about the (unspecified number of) casualties in Part Two.

Elevated Hearts, Chapter 11
Two A.M. on New Year’s morning, Gold barrelled through the hallways of Northwest Memorial, hardly heeding the protests of the people on the street. He nearly knocked someone over as he turned the corner into the hospital so sharply he may as well have gone straight through the wall.
The call had caught Gold just as he had fallen asleep, and he had been groggy when he fumbled for the receiver on the wall. He only heard the words ‘Northwest Memorial’, ‘Lacey French’, and ‘unexpected development’ before he had dropped the phone.
Unexpected development had been what they had said shortly before Neal had been admitted full time. An unexpected development is a term they had used when they had suggested hospice and unexpected development was the thing Nurse Tinker had whispered when she had held his hand after the doctor had announced the time of death.
David stood in the lobby, facing away from the front door towards the wall of elevators. “David!” Gold gasped, the stitch in his side making it hard to breathe. “They called me and told me to get down here. What happened?”
Gold had anticipated some of the worst-case scenarios on his way to the hospital, so he was taken aback by David’s wide grin. “She’s awake!” he announced as he grabbed Gold’s arm and dragged him towards the elevator.
“Oh, that-” Gold stammered as he was propelled forward. This was bad. This was very, very bad, he needed to get out. As the elevator doors swung open, he pointed behind him as if he had forgotten something, but David pushed him forward. Overhead, the hospital paged the Byers family to meet in the solarium.
“Boy, will she be glad to see you,” David said, relief evident on his face as the elevator ticked upwards. “I was waiting for Belle, but apparently there’s been some kind of hold up on the interstate, so let’s go on up.”
“Yeah,” Gold murmured as a sweat broke out across his forehead. In a minute, he was going to be revealed as a fraud, a liar, and very possibly a pervert. At least Belle wouldn’t be witness to it.
--
By the time the two men arrived at Lacey’s room, Doctor Whale had the rest of the family gathered just outside. When he saw them, he nodded in perfunctory greeting. Gold surveyed the floor for Nurse Tinker but did not see her amongst the staff.
Emma stood closest to the door, unaware of the doctor, her family or Gold’s arrival as she gazed at her godmother. Jefferson had a hat clutched so tightly in his hands that the brim had already started to tear and Mary Margaret was inches away from the doctor’s face with a litany of questions.
“Now, now,” the doctor said as he held his hands up for their full attention. It took Emma a moment to pull her gaze from the open door, and Whale waited until he had all eyes on him. “As I mentioned, Lacey woke last night at midnight, a bit earlier than we had anticipated, and was a bit disoriented. We did some tests, and everything came back excellent.”
“Can we see her?” Mary Margaret asked, effectively cutting off whatever the doctor would have shared with them about the results of said tests. Gold was in the process of looking for the nearest exit, but David had a firm grip on his shoulder. Jefferson couldn’t even look at him.
Realizing his time basking in their appreciation was not going to happen until they saw Lacey, Doctor Whale sighed and motioned for them to follow him into the room. Lacey lay upon the bed, as still as she had been the other day, and Gold let himself be pushed into the room by the family, though he hung at the back of the huddle around the bed, eyeing the exit sign across the hospital floor.
Doctor Whale bent down to place his hand gently on her shoulder. “Lacey?” Doctor Whale murmured, careful not to startle her. “Lacey. Your family is here, Lacey.”
The woman on the bed gave a sleepy sigh, and then as if kissed awake by a prince, her blue eyes fluttered open. Her gaze went first to David, who flashed her a thumbs up with a tight-lipped grin as he swallowed an exclamation of delight, before she turned to where Mary Margaret was clutching her husband’s arm, tears pouring out of her eyes as she smiled so broadly it looked as if she was in pain. Mary Margaret waved her fingers at her friend as her bottom lip trembled violently.
Emma peered down at her godmother, curious and yet uncertain of how to react. She twisted her medical bracelet nervously while Jefferson stood beside her, face stoic though his hat was clutched so tightly in his hand that it no longer resembled anything more than a piece of fabric.
Lacey’s eyes moved over the group, searching for her sister when her eyes landed on him. “Wh-who are you?” she asked. There was no accusation in her tone, just a simple curiosity.
It took a moment for this question to sink in, and when it did, everyone turned towards him except Jefferson, who slowly raised his hand to his face. It was over. Gold froze, his mouth opening and closing, but nothing came forth. How did he explain to them all he had only done it to try and help-
“My god,” David murmured, and Gold tried to prepare himself for what came next. “She’s got amnesia.”
Lacey gave a little giggle as if this was the funniest thing she had ever heard, and then her head slumped back upon the pillow and her eyes slid shut once more.
--
In the waiting room, there were a million questions flying at once. The family stood in a knot around the doctor, all striving to be heard as Gold leaned against the doorway, his jaw so tight he could have bitten through steel.
“Lacunar amnesia is a condition in which memory loss...is localized and patchy, limited to isolated events,” Doctor Whale was telling them. If Gold hadn’t believed the man to be a hack before, he certainly did now.
“Selective amnesia?” Mary Margaret drawled out in disbelief, and she didn’t even know the truth.
“Okay. Exactly,” Doctor Whale said, clearly used to this reaction in this diagnosis.
Gold couldn’t take it. He had kept silent for too long, and Lacey was awake now, the charade was over. “Um, sorry,” he interrupted and the crowd turned to him. “You--I-I need to tell you something that is really important.” Jefferson shook his head violently, but Gold ignored him. “I was never-’
“Dying?” Emma interrupted miserably.
Gold lost the stream of consciousness. “Huh?”
“We know,’ Mary Margaret said as she put her hand on her daughter’s shoulder. “Belle called us after you all spoke.”
“I’m sorry,” Emma murmured. “Lily just said she had heard that...and I...I-” The teen shook her head and just shook her medical emergency bracelet at him as if that would help explain it.
Before anyone could respond to this, the elevator door chimed and a familiar face rushed out. “Belle!” Jefferson called out as she nearly went right past them.
“Hey,” Belle said as her eyes flickered over Gold. She walked right by him, and he had to swallow the disappointment in this cold greeting to join nausea already rolling in his stomach. “So, she came out of it, huh?”
“Oh, I’m so glad you’re here,” Mary Margaret said as she clutched her friend’s arms.
An orderly popped into the room. “Excuse me. Doctor? She’s up again.”
“All right, let’s go,” David declared as he led the way out of the room. He began to explain the situation to Belle.
Gold lingered where he stood, his attempt to come clean interrupted once more. “Jefferson!” he hissed as he moved forward just in time to catch the younger man’s elbow.
Jefferson, caught in his escape, held up both hands in reassurance. “Now, listen,” he said with a nod. “Let me handle it. I’m too old a friend for them to kill.” Gold clenched his hands into fists at his side, and Jefferson patted his shoulder awkwardly. “I’ll take care of it, all right?”
Gold forced himself to exhale through his nose, though hardly any of the tension left his body. “Okay,” he agreed.
“And I’ll do it right now,” Jefferson promised.
“Okay.”
“Come on. Let’s go,” Jefferson said as he escorted him out the door. “Right behind you.”
Emboldened by knowing this whole fiasco was almost over, Gold went to join the rest of the group. So, caught up in his own thoughts, he didn’t even notice Jefferson had gone left instead of right and had effectively disappeared. Gold tumbled into the room just in time to hear Mary Margaret ask, “How are you feeling, beautiful?”
“I don’t know,” Lacey replied with a shake of her head. It was an odd experience to stand in the room with both the French twins awake, though only he and Whale seemed taken aback by the experience.
“Hey!” Belle said, a little too loudly when she noticed Gold had joined them. “You remember him?” she asked her sister.
Lacey turned to look past Doctor Whale at where Gold stood in the doorway. He smiled tightly back down at her. Lacey turned back to her twin with a pleasant, but uncertain, smile. “Should I?”
“Look closely,” David suggested with a wink.
Lacey’s eyes widened at this tone, and without moving her head glanced back over at Gold. She was lost, utterly adrift, and Gold felt like the biggest bastard that had ever dared to breathe. He swallowed, and closed his eyes, fighting the urge to be sick. Where was Jefferson?
“He looks a little familiar,” Lacey attempted, trying to give the crowd what they wanted. She ruined this by following up with, “Why?”
“I think it’s coming back,” Emma whispered up to Belle.
“I think so,” Mary Margaret said with a happy sigh. They were all so desperate they were seeing hope where it did not exist.
“What’s coming back?” Lacey asked, her eyes alert and wary. “Tell me. Tell me.” She struggled to sit upright. “What’s coming back?”
“You have amnesia,” Mary Margaret announced in a voice so forcefully cheerful, she may have been telling someone that yes, they won the lottery but they were also going to die the next day. Whale shot her a dark look that she had stolen his thunder, but Mary Margaret ignored him.
“I...do?” Lacey repeated as she looked down at her hands to see if those were still her own.
“Lacey, you’re engaged,” Emma said as if talking to a very small child. Beside her, Belle had her head lowered, not quite making eye contact with anyone else in the room.
“To who?” Lacey asked, clearly taken aback by this entire return to reality.
“To Gold,” David said as if this the most obvious thing in the world.
“Gold?” Lacey repeated with a blink. “Who’s Gold?”
Gold sighed and turned as if to go, but Emma hurried over to grab his hand and draw him closer to the bed.
“You don’t remember, do you?” Mary Margaret simpered as she brushed the hair out of her friend’s face.
An orderly appeared at the door. “Excuse me,” he announced with a smile at the happy family gathered around the sleeping beauty’s bed. “Got some Jell-O for you today,” he announced as he put the tray by the bed.
Lacey looked panicked as she racked her brain. “Do I like Jell-O?” she asked.
“Yum!” Mary Margaret mimed with a wink.
Emma rolled her eyes. “She’s always like this when she gets scared,” she confided to Gold in a stage whisper. “She reverts to treating you like you’re five.”
“I think she’s had enough excitement for one day,” Whale announced at the head of the bed as he regarded the machines. “She’s still a little disoriented and needs sleep. Let’s all go home,” he suggested.
“All she’s been doing is sleep,” Belle protested but she let the others lead her out of the room. They all said their goodbyes as they staggered past Gold out into the hall.
“She looks so good!” Mary Margaret whispered to Gold as she passed by him.
“She’s going to be fine,” David told him.
“I think she looks wonderful,” Emma said as she released his hand. Out of the corner of his eye, Gold saw Jefferson's face briefly appear in the swinging door windows down the hall, so he hung behind.
“All right, we’ll be back,” Belle called to her sister who had already turned her attention to the orderly at her bedside.
Gold did not notice Belle had stopped beside him until Whale exited the room to find her still lingering. “Come on, Belle, you too,” he said as if he was the friendly family physician. “Come on. Let’s go home.”
Assuming the coast was clear, Jefferson exited the nearest doors and headed straight towards the elevator but Gold caught him. “Jefferson,” he growled as he grabbed the young man and spun him away from the elevators. “Where have you been?”
“What?” he asked innocently. “I’m not allowed to go to the bathroom?”
“Jefferson.”
“I’m handling it!” he assured Gold. “I will tell them.”
“When?” Gold demanded. “When? On my golden anniversary?”
“Gold! I’ll tell them!” Jefferson promised.
“You better tell them!”
“I said I’d tell them!”
Gold wasn’t so sure, but he sighed and nodded for Jefferson to leave the way.
Back in her bed, Lacey stared up at the ceiling with a puzzled look on her face. She slowly began to sing the alphabet, nodding along to herself as the familiar rhyme came back to her.
The orderly smiled at her with a wink. “Lovely singing voice,” he said encouragingly. Lacey could only smile brittly back at him, unsure if she had at some point learned this man’s name, only to forget it, and too scared to ask.
--
Belle lingered in the lobby as the Nolans headed home. She had been up for twenty-four hours at this point, looked like hell warmed over, and wanted nothing more than to climb into her sister’s bed and hold her like they had done as children.
She didn’t know what she was waiting for until the elevator slid open to reveal Jefferson and Gold deep in conversation. “Hey!” she called out as she went to meet them. Gold looked surprised to see her, and both men stopped speaking abruptly as if she had caught them red-handed. She looked back and forth between the two of them. “What are you guys talking about?”
“We were going to split a cab,” Jefferson told her as he donned his cap. It was twisted beyond recognition and fell over his brow. “I was just saying it would be easier for me to take the El-”
The words were out of her mouth before she thought of them.“I’ll drive you. I have Lacey’s car.”
Jefferson nodded. “Lead the way.”
--
They dropped Jefferson off at the red line after he assured them it would take him five minutes on the EL versus thirty minutes via the car thanks to the roadblocks around town for the holidays.
This left Gold in the passenger seat and Belle’s knuckles white against the steering wheel. She had no idea what to say to her brother-in-law, and the only words that seemed to want to come out of her mouth were something one did not say out loud to their sister’s fiance. Besides, he was probably still mad over the whole mess that had been their last conversation. She didn’t blame him if he didn’t want to speak to her ever again.
Her eyes focused on the road, Belle did not notice Gold was struggling to articulate something either, and the drive stretched on in a pregnant silence.
The streets were empty, except for the lone cop car sectioning off an intersection. The radio was playing classical music softly in the silence of the car. It felt like an eternity before Belle turned on the growingly familiar street where Storybrooke Apartment sat.
She pulled to the curb and parked the car. Gold did not take his seatbelt off for a moment, staring out into the courtyard now empty of party-goers. Belle tried to find the words, but it was Gold who broke the silence. “Belle, you’ve been...really great this week.”
“Yeah,” Belle scoffed. “Like, uh, when I accused you of lying to everybody. Or when I accused you of having a relationship with Selena.” She paused and then added with a self-deprecating groan, “ Or when I thought you were dying and announced it to an entire party.”
She couldn’t even bear to look at him, so his chuckle was a surprise. “You’ve had a really busy week this week, haven’t you?”
Belle groaned and lowered her face to the steering wheel. She was going about this the wrong way- she needed to tell him-
“Look, Belle, I um-” Gold exhaled slowly. “Starting tomorrow, uh, things...are probably going to be kind of different.”
Like her twin sister was going to remember she was engaged to this amazingly kind, funny, wonderful, sexy man and Belle would have to learn how to stop having heart palpitations every time he looked at her with that smile. “Yeah,” she managed.
“I just wanted you to know that you’ve become..uh,... Belle stopped breathing. “A really good friend.”
She released the breath she had been holding and chuckled. “Yeah, okay.” Her chest felt empty as if everything inside of her had disappeared with those three words. Real good friend. She tapped the steering wheel as she processed.
Gold nodded. “Okay,” he announced before he opened the car door.
“Good friend,” Belle repeated and hearing herself repeat it out loud did the trick. “Truman!” she called out and the use of his first name stopped him on the sidewalk.
He leaned down to the window with a quizzical look, and everything in Belle wanted nothing more than to lean over the seat and press her lips against his, good friends be damned. “Yeah?” he breathed.
Belle was about to tell him this whole week had been a whirlwind, and how at every turn he had been there, how she had wanted him there, how she couldn’t even consider a world where he wasn’t there….but Lacey’s face came to her and instead she found herself looking down.
“I didn’t mean, uh, what I said about you and Lacey,” she told him and she forced herself to smile. “I think...you two are gonna make a really terrific couple, and uh….” she looked up into his eyes. “I’m really glad you won’t be alone anymore.”
Gold’s simply nodded. “Good-bye,” he told her.
“Bye,” Belle mumbled and then, uncertain she could prevent the tears that were starting to fall, she nodded and gave a little half wave before she drove away. She left him standing there upon the corner, and if she had looked back, she might have seen him watching her drive away into the night.

Mod Hina: I’m a heavy manga reader, so I’ve at least pursued probably 75% of this list... /sweats
Mushishi’s not on this list at all which makes me a little sad but if you’re into really well drawn manga about supernatural fantasy I’d give it a read! It’s mostly episodic and slowly reveals more info about the enigmatic protagonist over the length of the series. It’s really really good.

Mod Hina: Ah. Like Death Note, I also read Fruits Basket in middle school. This is such a nostalgia bomb for me because Fruits Basket was my first manga, iirc.
Fruits Basket actually introduced me to the idea of online scanlation groups too. I couldn’t find the last few volumes in any libraries around me, nor in any bookstores. So I resorted to downloading them online after finding out about the translations.
Fullmetal Alchemist - 1
Mod Hina: Fullmetal Alchemist is one of my all-time favorite manga and I’m very sad that it only got 1 nomination out of all of the nominations.
FMA is very poignant and deals a lot with the consequences and reality of war. It’s very good and it’s very amazing. Please read it if you can.
It’s a longer series and while I did start reading this one in middle school, unlike the others, I took longer to finish reading this. I think I finished sometime in high school.
I think this manga still holds up to the test of time, as well.
If you’re more of an anime person, the anime is really good too! I’d recommend watching the original FMA first, and then FMA:B because of the fact that FMA:B’s beginning is rushed, because it assumes that you’ve either read the manga or watched the original FMA.
The original FMA deviates from the manga canon, which is where FMA:B was made to fix that.
Please appreciate Greedling he is my favorite character of all time.

Koe no Katachi - 1
Mod Hina: I highly recommend this manga.
Another moment where I’m sad that this didn’t get that many recommendations.
It’s very realistic. Like, you’ll end up hating some characters, but that’s because they’re written to be realistic. There are people who did something wrong, who have character flaws, who know that they’re flawed, and some of them will try to change themselves, while others will disregard it because their life is fine, like in real life.
Overall the story is extremely poignant and touching. The ending is open-ended, which some people might not like, but I really enjoyed this because it’s so well written. It reflects real life, in my opinion.
Kuroshitsuji - 2
Kuzumi-kun, Kuuki Yometemasu ka? - 1
Liar Game - 1
Mod Hina: I started reading this manga years ago. At some point, the group translating it dropped the manga so there was a one year gap before anyone picked it back up, I think.
I need to finish this because I stopped at the gap, but I haven’t read it in years so I’ve forgotten what happened. My plan is to reread the whole thing, but it’s quite long so I don’t know when I’ll get around to that.

Mod Hina: Another weekly read for me. I mostly just like the art of food. The plot is kind of weak to me, and I legitimately got mad at the plot armor for one of the main protagonists once, haha.
Shuuen no Shiori - 2
Mod Hina: I’ve read a bit of this! I don’t think a lot of it is translated so I haven’t read beyond that.

I love Junji Ito a lot? He’s amazing and I’ve read all the works I can find from him that are translated..
Except Gyo. I have this abject rejection of Gyo for some reason.
I absolutely love the beginning of Uzumaki, although the end gets kind of weird for me.

Mod Hina: Yotsuba is also really big nostaglia for me. I never “finished” it (aka caught up since it’s still publishing) but I did start reading it in middle school. It’s one of the first manga I read and it really throws me back to my tweenage days.

Stargirl: The History of Shining Knight
https://ift.tt/2EnhXX6
This article contains Stargirl spoilers.
Think that you’ve got a handle on Stargirl and its ever growing roster of heroes and villains? Well, get ready to take a trip back in time to get familiar with a mysterious figure who has connections to Arthurian England. Oh, and he just so happens to be the janitor you might have seen skulking around Blue Valley High. It’s time to get to know Stargirl‘s Shining Knight!
Each week Stargirl has introduced new foes and friends for Courtney Whitmore and Pat Dugan, but in “Brainwave” they introduce a whole new team and it’s one that is sure to excite old school comic book readers. Though you might not have heard of them, the Seven Soldiers of Victory blazed a trail as one of DC Comics’ oldest teams, debuting in 1941’s Leading Comics #1. An interesting mix of pulp-era human heroes like the Vigilante and the Crimson Avenger alongside human do-gooders DC would become famous for like Green Arrow, Speedy, and, of course, the Star-Spangled Kid and Stripesy, the Seven Soldiers of Victory only featured one character with actual powers: the Arthurian hero known as Sir Justin A.K.A. The Shining Knight.
In the late ’30s, New Comics was a popular humor comic that delighted readers all over North America. But two creators by the name of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster changed all of that when they introduced a far-flung future detective known as Jor-L. The sci-fi story that featured the man who would become Superman’s father shifted the focus of the stories with creators moving closer to the genre-realm and crafting powerful heroes. That issue also happened to herald a name change to New Adventure Comics, a moniker which would soon become simply Adventure Comics. Shining Knight made his first appearance in the 66th issue of the Golden Age series in a self-titled story that from the very first page threw readers back in time for a medieval adventure… or so it seemed.
What lucky DC fans had actually plucked off of their local newsstand was something entirely different. In a classic bit of in media res storytelling, we meet Shining Knight when he’s stopping some modern (in 1941) criminals who look like your usual, run-of-the-mill mobsters. Readers were then transported back to discover the truth behind the mysterious armored hero.
Although “Justin” might not have necessarily seemed like a name you’d hear ringing through the court of Camelot, according to the story from Creig Flessel the young hero was a member of Arthur’s Roundtable who pledged his sword to none other than Lancelot himself. In an unbelievable turn of events for both the reader and Justin, while on the pursuit of two bandits the Knight stabs a tree, revealing it to be the wizard Merlin who Justin has unintentionally freed with his blade.
It’s a vital part of the character’s lore, as Merlin rewards Justin with his light and nifty gold and red armor, which would become synonymous with early versions of the character. He also received a magical sword that could cut through anything and his horse was gifted with the power of flight and super strength!
As if he hadn’t had enough adventure for one day, Shining Knight fights a giant and then gets stuck in a glacier for hundreds of years. Remember, this is 1941 so it predates the Silver Age retcon of another famous hero who found himself stuck somewhere very cold before thawing out and becoming an iconic champion. In Shining Knight’s case, though, he gets a bit more of a rude awakening as he’s brought back to life by a museum curator with a surprising personal collection of dynamite. Sir Justin really does have one of the strangest and funniest backstories in comics, and although we’ve yet to see it fully delved into on screen, Stargirl has hinted that its Shining Knight is a hero of the magical type.

Stargirl Episode 11 Review: Shining Knight
By Lacy Baugher
Once again, Stargirl and creator/executive producer Geoff Johns seem to be taking heavily from his own Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. series that introduced the heroine and inspired the hit CW show. During that series which we’ve been talking about a lot in these villainous deep dives, Shining Knight appeared as the Blue Valley High janitor who it was revealed had previously been hunting for Dragon King when he was struck down with amnesia after being transported back through time.
While some eagle-eyed viewers first thought that the red-haired janitor who spoke in riddles might be the original Fiddler, it was revealed that he was actually not a villain but instead an ally to Stargirl during her fight with Cindy Burman in “Shiv Part One.” Not only did he help save Courtney with his magical sword, but he also had a vision during “Brainwave” which saw his mop transform into the Cosmic Staff, seeming to imply that Justin might be getting his memories back. There was also, of course, the moment that he whispered to Beth that “there are dragons in the water.”
That arc, as well Pat introducing the Seven Soldiers of Victory, could hint at where the season is going. As fans have been watching Courtney reimagine the Justice Society of America and Dragon King has been working with the Injustice Society on Project New America, we might’ve been missing another superteam hiding in the shadows all along. In Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E., Justin regains his memory and teams up with the Seven Soldiers of Victory to take down Dragon King. Though the only members around at the moment seem to be Stripesy and Shining Knight, there’s always a chance that we could get a few more members popping up as Justin continues to regain his memory and the Injustice Society rises again.
If you’re desperate to know more about Shining Knight then the next episode of Stargirl, which is named after the Golden Age hero, will likely shine a light on this world’s iteration of the medieval hero and his esoteric past!
