Wukong study in LMK # PILOT

Let's gooo! I already did a study for Macaque, tbh I still have to post the study for S5 but I hadn't got the chance to edit it yet 😅.

Though now I wanna talk about Wukong! His character, his evolution, how we perceive him and how he's shown. I have seen some people complain about Wukong, about how he's a bad mentor, how he made the worst choices possible…and, well, I wanna go back on that.

Truly, the fact he's not a perfect mentor is what makes me like him.

So here we go, this is gonna be long 😌:

The pilot is our introduction to Wukong and it already tells a lot as it is.

The first minutes of LMK is about Wukong. DBK is going rampant in a nearby city and the Legendary Monkey King appears to stop him. Tang's voice narrates the whole encounter, which gives the scene an epic feel, but also makes both characters, DBK and Wukong, more flat. By that I mean that they feel more like characters from legends than people.

This feeling is reinforced by the fact that neither of them talk. During the whole fight sequence we hear grunts and groans but no exchange in-between them. In fact, the only voice that can be heard is Tang's. The silence of both DBK and Wukong make them feel like puppets, only characters of legends that Tang narrates.

Voices, logos in particular, is a human characteristic (logos is a Greek concept, more precisely it is the ability to speak being seen as the ability to reason, and thus speech being the characteristic of human beings. In literature and many other media stripping a character of their logos/voice is a way to strip them of their humanity. ). Stripping a character of their voice is a way to make them feel inhuman. Here, the fact that neither DBK nor Wukong speaks makes them feel like legends, being of paper more than flesh.

Our first shot of Wukong is this one :

He's presented as a shining beacon. The hero who comes from heaven and descends to save the mortals. The clouds part under his feet, the sun shines in his back and even though DBK appears infinitely larger, Wukong is the one with power, he's physically above DBK which gave his appearance a sense of power.

The whole shot basks in his colors (gold/yellow), even DBK is plunged in his shadow.

Afterward, throughout the fight, Wukong showcases his numerous powers (72 transformations /staff / clones). He feels unbeatable. Mighty. And end the fight by dropping a mountain on DBK.

Once the fight scene ends, our focus is brought to Tang, who closes a book, and MK. That in itself told us that the first appearance of Wukong is not truly Wukong himself but more his legend. In fact, we can even argue that the whole fight we just watched was the fruit of either Tang's or MK's imagination.

As such we're introduced to Wukong as MK sees him : an unbeatable hero, a shining beacon. A perfect being who protects those in need. Which is in fact quite clever, because MK is the MC, so it makes sense for us to be introduced to Wukong as MK sees him.

So what is the first real appearance of Wukong then?

Yes. That's him. That's our guy. The bird in the shadows. A pretty underwhelming appearance isn't it? He's not shining, he's not gleaming like the sun, he's not even a monkey. At this point, even if we saw Wukong's bird form during his fight with DBK, we're not even sure if it's really Wukong.

Wukong wasn't even following MK, he was already here, probably to keep watch on the Bull family. MK just happened to stumble here and Wukong took interest in him.

Wukong as a bird become some sort of comedic aspect. He watches the Bulls schemes with MK, even nips at MK's fingers to make him fall.

Afterward, Wukong follows MK closely, each of his appearances gives rhythm to the different scenes. He acts like a link in-between the different scenes.

They're searching for the Monkey and he's right here, under their noses, but none notices him. Probably, because none would believe Wukong is this measle butterfly perched on the railing. Why would the Great Monkey King follow them?

I think it's a great subversion of what we could have expected of the Monkey King. We expected someone great, someone perfect. At the end of the journey, Wukong is supposed to be enlightened, to be flawless. Yet he clearly isn't. And that's the whole point of Wukong in the pilot. He defies our expectations of him by being… imperfect.

Story-wise, I think Wukong is monitoring them. We can see that he watches both the Bulls and MK's team, he's silent, observant, clearly he isn't letting fate decide. He's not irresponsible enough to not observe the situation and let others deal with it. Yet he's intrigued by MK. He wants to see what the boy is capable of. What he is, perhaps. That's probably why he involved MK in the situation by nipping his fingers and making him fall right in the middle of DBK's resurrection.

When MK falls on FFM and enters the water-curtain cave, he sees visions of the pilgrims. He see a vision of Wukong, perfect, shining with a golden hue, and think it's the real Wukong, yet when he tries to touch him, the illusion fade away :

There is great symbolism here. MK chases after an illusion. A legend. An afterimage of Wukong that will never be the truth. Clearly, the show is already telling us to not trust our assumptions of Wukong, to not see him as a perfect hero, because he will not be that.

MK had an epic introduction right there. With imagery of the journey highlighted in gold. This introduction felt mighty, it felt heroic, worthy of the Monkey King. Yet it's not real. In contrast, the true Wukong is introduced to MK through a joke, through a comedic light.

Wukong tries to introduce himself but MK squashes him under his foot like a bug. Sorry, Wukong, you tried.

Afterward, Wukong pushes MK's feet away and goes through an epic sequence of transformations to finally properly introduce himself. The show is playing with our assumptions of Wukong, especially by alternating epic and comedic tones.

Wukong is first presented as epic through Tang's storytelling, then he's seen in a comedic light during DBK's resurrection because of his “bird shenanigans”. Then MK sees an epic version of Wukong, only to find out it's an illusion and stumble upon him through a joke.

When you finally think, perhaps the Monkey King is really a joke? Wukong still introduces himself in an epic fashion.

Clearly, Wukong isn't perfect, he's not the hero you (or MK) thought BUT he's still a hero nonetheless. That's why the show is playing with those two different tones (epic and comedic) to introduce Wukong.

The conversation that follows between MK and Wukong paints Wukong as a laid-back and somewhat lazy person, he's reclining on his cloud, eating peach-chips. He's not the wise master we expected to see. In fact, he's very elusive, seems like he doesn't even care.

His advice is admittedly not that great (even a smidge can make the difference) but ultimately it is what pushes MK forward, it is what gives him the confidence to step up and become the protagonist.

And again, like the show subverted Wukong character, the show is also subverting MK's quest.

MK thought he was here to give the staff to Wukong, but turns out Wukong had been following him this whole time, 🤡. That's because MK's real quest isn't finding Wukong, it's to become the protagonist. The MONKIE KID. In the end, MK needs to be established as the MC. Wukong can't defeat DBK, it isn't his role anymore, it's MK's. In the same fashion, MK isn't the Monkey King, he's the Monkie Kid.

As we can see in this shot. MK is the one forward, he is the protagonist. Wukong is behind, smaller, because it's not his story anymore, it's MK's. The whole pilot is about MK establishing himself and carrying Wukong's legacy.

In the end, once MK defeats DBK, we can see Wukong silently bowing to him.

This is a symbolic passing of his duty to MK. He's not the hero anymore, MK is. He inclines himself before his successor as a way to show he acknowledges him and that MK is taking up his torch. At the same time the mere fact that he's here shows that he's not letting the kid fend off alone. He was here if anything went awry.

So what does the pilot tell us about Wukong?

First, Wukong isn't perfect. He's not like his legend, and as MK needs to let go of this afterimage of Wukong we, as an audience, also needs to let go. We will follow MK through his adventures and as the plot progresses, gradually, we will see Wukong for who he is rather than what we thought he was.

Second, Wukong will not be the stereotypical wise master that we are used to in other media.

The figure of the wise master is often presented as someone that cannot be surpassed, as someone silent, serious with poise and grace. Someone that will make no mistakes, that will be perfect in their teachings. Someone that feels like a pillar. A mountain that the student needs to overcome to end their training.

An example of a common stereotypical wise master would be Master Wu of Ninjago.

In contrast, Wukong is the opposite of this ideal of a wise master. He's shown as lazy, gluttonous with generic advice that anyone could give. Wukong is shown as an antithesis of the stereotypical wise master, he is a deconstruction of this ideal.

It makes Wukong feel way more human.

In fact, I would argue that he is better than other stereotypical wise masters because contrary to them, Wukong learns from MK, he is growing alongside his student. His journey isn't over. I love this because often than not masters in other media rarely if ever learn from their students, it feels like they reached a point where they have nothing more to learn. But it's not true, you will always be able to learn new things from life. In fact, Wukong in his ability to learn from MK showcases much more humility than others masters that consider themselves at the zenith of their own learning.

So I reached the end of this analysis of the pilot. I'll do another post for Wukong in season 1!

What’s been happening and going to happen for the future

So first off just to clear the blog isn’t ending. I wanted to explain why things have been slow on the blog, lack of uploads, and posts.

Ever since September things started getting busy, I finally saved enough money to buy a iPad Air for drawing. And was excited to start to relearn to use a tablet( I used to do some digital art back in high school)

At the same time while I also had been going back to school ( adult education) to finish my certification cuz things were getting back to normal hahaha na this world still mess up but at least school was open. But then I had another problem, work.

I had been in retail for years, I like my job and my coworkers but it was becoming more stressful and demanding, with a pay rate that was low for this economy. I think we all know especially if you live in American how bad things have been getting with the growing inflation.

What also didn’t help you never leave on time ever. You’re shift done at 9:30 nope you are here intell 10 or even 11 pass. Being understaff and etc made me worried and so stressed. So I got a new job and finish school, cuz I had people on me about “it’s been years why aren’t you done yet?!” The pandemic HELLO.

By January I finished school which yayyyyyyy! And got a another job opportunity. There’s other things that had happened, trying to eat healthy, home issues, car problems, etc. I had TV to keep distracted but then I was changing my mind on what I wanted to watch.

This now goes into what will posting on the blog and thoughts on starwars.

I still like starwars love ya, but I don’t feel the same inspiration and excitement for the newest shows to come. Actually I was barely enjoying anything new from Starwars.

And please this is just my opinion, if you enjoy the sw shows that’s great. But for me everything that came out after mando season two was mediocre, ok or trash. It just wasn’t good, the story , the writing, animation or live action, the freaking editing jeez.

Maybe some of you already know but I don’t care for the bad batch, didn’t care for their introduction or much less for the show. Just didn’t like concept but still gave the first season a shot watch a couple times. Then sw fandom ..

The discourse in the fandom, some of y’all are wonderful in your art and I hope you keep pursuing it. And some of you are cursed, there were more clonest art and debating about sw shows in general, sometimes I wonder if some fans are even real or just bots. The changes to the canon or what even is the canon anymore? Jeez the arguments on canon. Or people putting all the trust into one person thinking they saved the franchise, yeah don’t count on that. Not to mention the weird raise of sexualizing of characters and real people (if you know,you know)

Over the year my attention went to other stuff, my friends got me into model kits it started first with transformers some years back but there weren’t many. But there’s plenty of gundams plus a new show with their first female lead, awesome soundtrack, and girlfriends ooh yes please.

Plus with Crunchyroll I’m able to finally watch some of the old anime’s I saw bits of as a kid. But now able watch the whole thing. Plus coming on the horizon a reimagining of a anime I haven’t seen sense freshmen year huh?!

SO there was a reimagining of Trigun if you haven’t heard please please go watch, I really want a part two please! It’s doing ok in the numbers, you can watch both the new one and the 1998 oh version on both Crunchyroll and Hulu. Watch both, there’s also a the original manga but unfortunately the publisher hasn’t reprint the manga so yeah it’s expensive to buy. BUT THERES HOPE right here on Tumblr you can read for free. But please to donate too cuz these fans are doing the work to translate.

Also NEW TRANSFORMERS MOVIE LETS GOOO, so yeah get ready cuz my art is changing again, I still would like to work on my starwars ocs still.

But there will be more Trigun fanart for sure, along with pics of my growing plant and model kit collection. Shovelwarewolf S2 E4: Duke Nukem Forever

Ok so the big plot point of this episode is Susan revealing that she's been fired and honestly rewatching this series, I think this moment really represents how well RE wrote the characters

Even though Susan and Ivan have shared very little screen time in the grand scheme of the show up to this moment and most of that was filled with Ivan's sarcastic comments about shovelware and the Company, you can't help but feel the sadness and disappointment that Susan has being forced to leave. Having the only other real character we meet be this sympathetic character that actually cares about Ivan and builds a relationship with him makes this scene just hurt that much more and I just love how effectively this is done in such a short time frame

(I think the effectiveness of these characters is aided by not watching it in a binging context but in the context closer to what it released in, doing it day by day instead of week by week)

Also fuck the delivery of that "Ivan, I'm sorry" line is just so good and is the perfect pretense for what's to come later in the season

You know what's interesting about this series is that Ivan and the Shovelwarewolf really do feel like two different characters at some points, they way they interact with the world really feels like Shovelwarewolf is less and expansion of Ivan's anger/rage and more like a symbiotic relationship like Venom

The Company really leaned into the evil factor with the knock out gas

Something interesting about this knock out gas that I will touch on with a theory later is that the gas causes the Shovelwarewolf to not transform back into Ivan

You knew it was coming with the licensed shovelware, the Zelda CD-i games!!!

Honestly I forgot how much discussion this episode brings when talking about it in a review context cuz while the actual game review section doesn't stand out I think the character moments around it really make this episode stand out

So, yea. I might post some sketches that entail some plot points though. If those plot points will stay is another thing, but I am fairly sure that I will keep them. Season 2 is supposed to consist out of some highjinks after all.

Alright here’s her history from around classic to the end of battle for Azeroth. This is much more important to what’s currently going on with her, long post again!

Trigger warning for body horror and gross eye stuff

-She didn’t do much during classic itself, she spent her time in Silitithus with other Druids attempting to heal the land and fight off the old god presence there.

-she spent a little too much time around Ahn’Qiraj and C’thun’s presence started seriously affecting her mental state to the point where her fellow Druids figured it would be best for her to leave Silithus

-She left shortly before the old god’s demise and when Burning Crusade kicked off she journeyed through the dark portal to Outland with the Cenarion Expedition for a few months

-she then came back to Azeroth and lived in Ashenvale for a while until Wrath of the Lich King.

-When WotLK rolls around Ro spends her time in dragonblight, mainly focusing on aiding the green and red flights against the scourge. She starts hearing whispers from Yogg-Saron whenever she journeys away from the dragon sanctuaries…

-During Cataclysm Ro’wynne stayed in dragonblight, and even though the old gods that previously plagued her were dead, she refused to leave and wanted to continue to aid the dragons after Deathwing’s demise.

-she just kinda chills for MoP, she spends a lot of time with the Cenarion Circle in hyjal strengthening her connection to the Emerald Dream

-Come Warlords of Draenor she is also just kinda chilling on kalimdor, tending to the Emerald dream, etc

-when legion hits Ro’wynne is essentially thrown back into action. She returned to Val’Sharah to aid the Druids there, only to find her grove completely corrupted by nightmare. Ro is absolutely devastated by this and spends legion helping to lead the fight against the nightmare

-she delved into the depths of nightmare to save the dream after the death of Ysera. Her close connection to the green flight brought her great grief and she wanted to avenge all of those that fell to the corruption. However unbeknownst to her, Ilgy’noth was able to slip into her mind in the nightmare and opened the way for N’Zoth…

-after killing the Nightmare’s presence Ro’wynne goes to suramar and finds some family that is still left, then returns to Ashenvale as her old grove is beyond any healing.

-the burning of Teldrassil happens and is another blow to Ro’wynne. Several of her close friends and family died in the burning and Ro’wynne swore vegeance. She joined the alliance army and quickly rose up into the 7th legion and gained a reputation as a brutal soldier.

OLD GO TIME LETS GOOO

-N’Zoth had wormed his way deep into her mind, and convinced her that his orders were her thoughts (it started off subtle and right after defeating the nightmare and then progressed to very clearly him speaking to her by mid bfa)

-He promised her everything she wanted and warped her mind until she believed that he was the only path for a new night elven home (eventually this idea dies and she swears herself to him)

-she defected from the 7th legion suddenly after people began noticing that she was acting more and more irrational and angry (around the end of the nazjatar campaign)

-no one heard from her until N’Zoth began attacking the titan facilities in Uldum and Pandaria. Ro’wynne had been following the old god’s orders and she led the assault on the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.

-She is completely unhinged at this point, the only thing that matters to her is the will of her master and she eagerly carries it out. N’Zoth rewards her and makes her his herald, gifting her with his powers.

-She can no longer communicate with nature as she once did, her connection to the dream is shattered and she is no longer the great Druid she once was.

-to make up for this however her body has been transformed by N’Zoth. Her right arm is infused with power and becomes monstrous, covered in spikes and general old gold nastiness. her hand becomes a huge monstrous one. In order to prove her loyalty to him she offers up her eyes (literally). N’Zoth gleefully accepts and and gifts her with two new ones, eyes from his very body, to fill her empty sockets…

Ok u guys are finally going to hear about Ro’wynne and her whole deal!

This is gonna be super long and posted in segments so do with that what you will (there’s gonna be a TLDR at the end)

So her background until around classic:

- she was born in suramar to the Starfell kaldorei family (they got their name from their ancestor who was rumored to have touched a fallen star and be imbued with great arcane power)

- her family was a line of great mages, proficient in all fields of magic but especially arcane magic! At least one child of every generation was gifted with exceptional arcane abilities.

-Ro’wynne was not one of them, and despite this she was sent to train as a mage during her childhood, and although she learned the arcane arts she felt called to nature more

- as a kid she’d often wander off into the forests of Suramar and learned that while she wasn’t gifted with arcane powers, she had a very strong magical bond with plants and animals (especially avians and ungulates)

-over time her parents realized that she was called to be a Druid and sent her to Val’Sharah and then Teldrassil, where she was able to truly harness her powers and flourish (around her early 20s I like to think)

-she specialized in taking the forms of crow, deer, and panther, and learned to magically manipulate plants

-she returned to Val’Sharah after finishing her training and made it her home (by this time suramar has closed itself off from the world and her family lost touch with her)

-she found out that she really loved exploring Azeroth, and started a pattern that she would follow for thousands of years. Her home was Val’Sharah, but every few decades she would go off and find an adventure to pursue (when she got older she became more of an adventurer for hire and would form groups to go on some quest or journey, think dungeons and dragons)

-she would always return back to her grove though, which was by Shaladrassil, the soon to be corrupted world tree…

TLDR: she grew up a mage but became a druid, lived in Val’Sharah and Teldrassil, but often left for years on end to explore the world. She typically rented herself out as a mercenary/adventurer for hire and was capable of performing some mage magic, but better known as a skilled druid.

so it took me nearly a year but I finally finished my tvd rewatch! when it originally aired I only watched until about season 3 and then I caught episodes here and there, so this felt like a first watch for the most part. it took me months to watch the first 4 seasons and then I watched the last 4 in the past month or so. s6 was definitely my favorite, and I’m definitely glad I finally watched it all the way through because it was a fun time even though right now I feel like my soul has been crushed. I already have 2 steroline videos started & I can’t wait to work on them!!

I decided to take notes during my watch because my memory sucks especially when I’m binge watching something so I thought I’d post them here for the laughs. please note these are my personal opinions and I mean no offense to anyone (I’m not the biggest klaus fan for example) and also it’s mostly just me gushing over steroline so... fair warning! 😂

plot points: the originals are going after katherine / katherine’s doppleganger (and they were in 1864) for klaus. the moon stone binds the curse of vampires and werewolves. HUMAN patrova blood breaks the curse because the witch who created the curse used patrova blood. also needs a werewolf and a vampire. klaus needs all of this to break the curse. if a vampire breaks the curse, werewolves are stuck with the curse forever and vice versa.

one of my favorite kedgeup things is when ut!sans or uf!paps lands in the other’s universe, and this fic expands on this idea rlly well.

A Lack of Brotherly Love by Askellie: After a brutal series of genocide runs, Sans wakes up in an alternate universe where the monsters were saved, everyone is on the surface and the future looks bright…except the fundamental difference in this universe is that its resident Sans never loved or supported his brother. As a result, Papyrus is a lonely outcast, unable to fit in and scarred from years of emotional neglect.And Sans isn’t going to let that stand.

i desperately want sans to punch the fuck out of dr.serif. and then go give poor paps all the hugs he deserves.

To Love Yourself by undertailsoulsex: UF!Sans fights with his brother and doesn’t know what to do with himself. He ends up traveling to the Undertale Universe where he meets the kindhearted Sans and Papyrus.UF!Sans has to come to terms with his depression and his newfound feelings for the other skeletons.

this fic emotionally destroyed me… but in a good way i swear! it’ll lead you on a rollercoaster of feels, but it’s worth it.

It’s A Long Story by RiseiTekiSensei: a soriel series detailing toriel and sans’ relationship in the underground and aboveground. i really like how both of them have their own issues, and how they support eachother through those issues. i also love how head over heels sans is for toriel.

A Fortune Cookie For You by Darkhymns: “In bed” jokes are the lowest form of comedy. So, of course, Sans and Toriel love them.

the jokes man. the jokes are the best.

Never a Lovely So Real by Kaesa: The city of Ebott, 193X. The market’s down, the crime rate’s up, and Sans is just trying to make a buck and keep an eye on his brother by working for the Dreemurr crime family. But after the Dreemurrs rescue a human child from their rival gang, the Flower Boys, Sans soon finds himself in way over his head. (Well. Not that that’s hard.)  

i love all the research put in to make this mob au fic really authentic. reading the little anecdotes at the end is rlly fun. 

Our Skeleton by yastaghr: The people who love him come to realise Sans may be hiding something from them. 

this. this is the fic that really got me into sansgoriel. royal goats showering tiny skele in love is the best.

for queen and country by tealmoon: Being the Judge of the Underground isn’t just a job, it’s about being chosen to carry out the infallible will of the Royal Family, to keep chaos and crime at bay, to protect all of Monsterkind.            

And for Papyrus, it’s about being helpless, and afraid, and alone.

us!paps suffering: the fic. somebody give this skele a friend. pls, he desperately needs one.   

Fired Up and Bone Weary by perniciousLizard: slowburn domestic sansby series. sans is written so in-character and grillby is really fleshed-out as a character. there’s tension and drama here and there, but it still feels mellow overall. reading this fic feels like sitting next to a warm hearth. 

These are our Days by Rehlia: Two days ago, you said goodbye to your best friend. Yesterday, you lost your job with no prior notice. And then today, you had a fight with your mom. So that’s your day today. Lonely, fighting with your mom, jobless. Perfect Day for a drink or two, right? What’s that on TV about monsters?You didn’t expect the monsters to accept that application for a social media job you sent them while you were drunk. Now you’ve suddenly moved to Ebott and spend your days hanging out with monsters, documenting your weird new life, and marvelling at how different monsters and humans can be - and how similar.  

god, i love all the worldbuilding in this fic. the little things about monster culture are so great. this fic really makes me invested in monsterkind’s integration on the surface. and the build-up to the sans/reader relationship rlly makes it all the more satisfying.

Tend to your memories by Rainbow_Sprinkles: Post-Pacifist after many, many resets. Explores political, social, and personal facets of monster integration into human society. Begins in 211X and spans over many years. Political and social climates have undergone major shifts from those of the present day. Character development and platonic-familial relationships receive the most attention. Major motifs include health, medicine, and science. 

realistically, i think a lot of the ut cast have been traumatized in some way, and this fic explores that very thoroughly. i think my favorite part about this series is the frisk, flowey, and chara development.

Kingship, And What Comes Next by CatKing_Catkin: This is the story of the Underground after Sans hung up the phone, after Papyrus took the throne. There’s no one left to guide him, no one left to look up to. Papyrus doesn’t want to let anyone down, especially not Sans when his brother is working so hard to support him. Sans doesn’t want to let Papyrus down, when his brother really is all he has left.They make mistakes, they miss one another, but together, they try to figure things out.This is a story about growing up, moving on, and what’s important in life.

this fic managed to take one of the saddest (imo) endings and turn it into something hopeful. 

lest ye be judged by nilchance: in an alternate universe, asgore became something like a parental figure to sans and papyrus. the whole series is wonderful, and i love the relationship sans and asgore have. 

Tsum Papyri by BarkingPup: In this world there is only Papyrus and… more Papyrus

the super sweet tsumtsum au made by zarla turned incredibly horrifying.

I should add the preliminary note: This is probably the only pseudo complex and surrealist dream I have ever had/ remembered that I had. Setting: a small village. Everyone is living perfectly normal lives. A friend who in real life previously had romantic inclinations towards me asks to marry me. I say yes and we are engaged. There is a hint that we aren’t really going to have a wedding. We’re just planning on eloping in about T+3 days. I like that this is very chill, but feel bad and guilty because my family won’t be involved and they’ll be offended after it happens. On the day that I am to go and elope, my older sister comes and she has an at home water birth. It is understood that the child is my kid with this friend that I’m engaged to and about to marry and my sister is the surrogate mother. When this is found out by all, my parents get REALLY upset. 1) because I was secretly engaged and about to elope 2) because THERE’S ALREADY A KID INVOLVED. A slightly more conscious side of my brain kicks in after computing what is going on and expressing it’s dislike of the situation: “WAIT. THIS CAN’T BE YOUR KID. But it’s that classic dream-style surreal thing where though this person is in essence “~~~~” my childhood friend from Russia, though he has now been conveniently been put into the body of…. … Dylan Moran We walk around small village town to Nick Drake’s Northern Sky. I come across a movie theater. But it’s also a train station and the train station is written in hebrew letters. A taknat rakevet to be exact. I want a specific ticket that is both for a movie and for a train. Conscious voice awakes again, “Hey! I know where you are! The city planning for this town, and this strange decrepit movie theater building– this is Sulmona, in Italy! But this is kinda weird, because you’re living in a Salmon that is definitely in Israel. Also. Wh– what’s that? Oh everyone working in this building is speaking Ukrainian. Yeah. Okay. ALL MAKES SENSE. Italian town, Soviet decrepit theater, in Israel, Ukrainian language written in Hebrew. Back to dream!” It’s a complex soviet style bureaucratic building and I’m wondering around asking people “where can I buy the tickets to the movie and for the train?” and they point me up and up and up and up a loonngg complex escher like staircase. Each time I get to a new landing I ask “where can I buy the tickets for the movie and the train? “ and they point me up and up and up . Finally a woman on the escher staircase an ambiguous distance away from me (since it’s an escher staircase) says “I’M COMING. FOR GOODNESS SAKE I’VE BEEN HEARING YOU ASK THIS FOR AGES NOW. I’M COMING. I’M THE DESK RIGHT THERE” I think: “Ah yes! This is wonderful post Soviet customer service! The customer is always wrong and at fault! Yes! Yes Yes!” I wait. She comes. And she’s grumpy. And I start to ask for the tickets for the movie and train. She looks at me befuddled “what? what do you want?” “… do you not sell tickets? WHAT IS THIS PLACE?” She says “it’s a creative work space. you can buy a card from me to rent a desk and you can work at the desk for as long as the time that you paid for” semi-conscious interrupting voice in my head: OH MY GOSH! AN ANTI-CAFE!! IT’S NOT WHAT YOU WANT, BUT IT’S KINDA ALSO WHAT YOU WANT. BECAUSE YOU NEED TO FINISH THAT THING. AND YOU WERE LOOKING AROUND KYIV FOR ANTI-CAFE’S ANYWAY! GREAT THAT YOU FOUND ONE THAT SPEAKS UKRAINIAN IN ISRAEL! back to dream: me: “an anti-cafe! great! let’s do that.” There are all these complications with buying this stupid card. The cards have strange time allotments all in fractals and symbols. We find one with a normal time- 90 minutes. She doesn’t have change for the 100 shekel bill I have. Another woman comes around and gets mad at me for not having the right change. At which point I start cry/ yelling out of frustration. And then secret romance man 2 comes. He gathers everyone in the building together and sings Rachmaninoff Vespers to them. Everyone is smiling, laughing, crying. And I look around and see that everyone has transformed. The Ukrainians are all Japanese. I think “If I sing a Ukrainian folk after this, would they let me buy the time allotment card for the anti cafe?” I wake up.
