chapter 13: 'cause they're calling me by my name

Despite his certainty that he wouldn’t sleep, Harry blinked open his eyes with effort to find grey light filtering into the room. His lids felt stuck together, his body a stone tucked in between the sheets.

He lay there heavy and numb.

Thumps and rustles around the room told him the other boys were getting themselves ready for class, but he already had a strange and detached knowledge that he was not going to go with them today.

Harry could not bring himself to feel much of anything about this.

His limbs might have belonged to someone else for all he could move them. He stared at his bed curtains, blinking slowly. Breathing. When Ron pulled them back to urge Harry out of bed and then to look down at him with worry, Harry flicked his eyes up only once before closing them. Even that seemed to drain him.

Ron’s reluctance to leave him like this was palpable, but in the end he mumbled something about coming up later. The curtains closed again, and Harry breathed. In and out. Slow and steady. He could lie here forever, he thought. He really, really could. Probably he should have felt alarmed at the state of himself. But the world outside his bed was a distant thing, and he was only grateful that his thoughts did not seem to want to form into anything more coherent than an odd, slow tumble.

He stayed there, all at once too heavy and too untethered, until he fell back into a light doze.

It only took me about 10,000 years, but I finally updated! This chapter is the somewhat-unofficial-start to the final phase of Close your eyes. Not saying it's going to be over soon or that I know how many chapters are left, but... there's a faraway light at the end of a long tunnel, haha. It'll make sense when you read it. Rebe will be back next chapter, this one features some VaLu... quality time? 🤔

"Lulu!"

Yep, he was standing under her balcony shouting her name like they were in an alcohol-fueled, modern-day version of Romeo and Juliet.

Lu stood in the open balcony door, her mouth hanging open. Then she caught herself and stepped outside.

"What are you doing? Go home!"

"Hi!" A smile broke out on his face. Aside from that, Lu noticed, he looked pretty terrible. There was a stain on his shirt, his matted curls stuck to his face and his skin was a pallid color.

"I lost your key," he shouted up at her. "Let me in, please?"

Lu's heart was beginning to pick up. Was something wrong? She hesitated for another moment, then her concern won out.

"Fine." She tried to not let the entire neighborhood in on their conversation. "Go back to the door, I'll-"

"What?" He was shouting at the top of his lungs, and Lu saw her upstairs neighbor step onto her balcony. "Please, Luluuuu. Lu. Luuuu-"

"I said come in!" Lu yelled.

Keep seeing that post where OP starts like 'Thinking about...grieving the undead' and then adds on about like. Real life situations where people have not died but have left your life and you would have reason to grieve them.

All respect, that's an important concept, but that is not what I am thinking about when I read 'grieving the undead'.

#your brother is a vampire. he's sitting across the table from you chatting with your mother about her day #and he's dead and he's gone and he's never coming back.#he laughs the same and he talks the same but his arm is cold when he grabs you in a headlock and your dog won't be in the same room with hi #he'll still hang around watching TV with you and give you wedgies and make stupid jokes #but you can't tell him about the bullies at school anymore because this thing with your brother's face will just find them and kill them.#and not even stupid fucking Jason deserves what the monster in your dead brother's skin would do to him.#your brother is dead and lost and right there in arm's reach and gone forever with no hope of ever getting him back.#i'm sure there are corollaries to be written about like ghosts and zombies but this is the one i'm personally hung up on recently
