Was just thinking about the whole Marazhai trial mess and thinking . . . why was Marazhai so determined to get the Rogue Trader there to "testify," other than just being obsessed with them?

Do Drukhari really care that much if a human witness is a mere inquisitorial servant (like Achilleas) or a Rogue Trader? Couldn't Marazhai have just snatched up Achilleas that day on Dargonus and gone ahead with his plan?

But no. No, Marazhai has to take the Rogue Trader specifically, even though doing so got many of his kabal's forces killed at Dargonus (by making them stay so he could sit on the RT's throne and gloat at them instead of just leaving once the RT showed up) and required him to make dangerous, expensive deals with a haemonculus and mandrakes. Rogue Traders are powerful and well protected, so the cost/benefit analysis of abducting one ends up on the side of very costly. As Abelard notes in Act 1, the RT's life (by Imperium standards) is worth more than an entire populated planet.

Marazhai kind of betrays his personal obsession when, if you choose certain dialogue options during the capture and before the trial, he seems excited about keeping the RT as his "pet" once he is Archon. While becoming Archon is no doubt the foremost of his desires, I think he has a fixation on the RT as well, from the beginning. His actions even mirror (darkly) a courtship where he gives the RT what he calls "gifts" (the opportunity to kill Tazarra and the specially designed poison).

Of course this fixation doesn't become something more lasting and serious unless the RT ends up on the "true romance" path, but I think Marazhai's personal interest in the RT starts pretty much from the moment he first sees them on Vhaebos VI. (Which is pretty in character for a Drukhari "romance" according to the Mistress Baeda's Gift short story). Which, IMO, also explains why he's immediately down for flirting with the RT just after he's recruited.

9. What was their Darkest Hour? How does it affect them today?

Rellianna's darkest hour was Shadow of Torment. She was betrayed by someone she considered a close and trusted companion, essentially her right hand man. They both came from the same gutter, both clawed their way to the top, but Rellianna was in charge and he wasn't. He coveted her position, her power, and her wealth. The traitor laid a trap to capture her, and he "gifted" her anonymously over to the authorities.

She was brutally tortured over the course of a year. Eventually her freedom was bought out by one of the more "honorable" criminal leaders who served her, and he considered his debt to her squared off. Her criminal empire had collapsed with infighting over her vacated position, and the traitor had long since been killed by someone else.

Much was taken from her, even her revenge, and that left Rellianna physically scarred + emotionally burnt out. She'd been betrayed before, but this was a heavy blow to her. This event is central to her character arc throughout the events of RT and it's why she and Yrliet couldn't romantically work out after Commorragh (Rellianna forgave her, but told Yrliet she'd never forget). Betrayal after betrayal leads her into the influence of Marazhai.

23. How do they hold themselves? Is the persona they show the world different to who they truly are? Who is privy to the ‘real’ them?

I'd say Rellianna is pretty upfront about who she is and it's very much, "I'm dead inside," vibes LOL She doesn't have the energy to keep up a false persona. Unless she has good reason not to be, she's generally honest and direct. Rellianna appreciates more informal, candid conversation over fussy tradition and deference to her RT position.

In he later acts, Marazhai might argue that he sees the "real" her. She becomes nihilistic and apathetic, compartmentalizing her empathy. Their bloody feasts become an awful way for her to "turn off the noise" for a moment.

With the DLC approaching, I thought I would put together a list of 25 OC building questions to ask yourself or have others ask you! Mainly just background stuff, not much in the way of in-game choices, but I hope they can maybe inspire someone or help shift the ol' writer's block if applicable 🧭

1. Where are they from? What is their homeworld like? Do they miss it? 2. What is their Origin? Who were they before they became a Rogue Trader? 3. Do they have a good relationship with their family? Who were they closest to growing up? 4. What does their name mean? Is it significant? 5. Describe a memory from childhood they think of fondly.

CHARACTER & CONVICTIONS:

6. What is their Conviction? How adherent are they to it? Does it change at all over the course of the game? 7. Was there a defining moment in their life that influenced their Conviction? 8. What was their Triumph? Do they take pride in it? 9. What was their Darkest Hour? How does it affect them today? 10. How do they feel about becoming a Rogue Trader? How easily do they take to being the head of the von Valancius dynasty?

RELATIONSHIPS:

11. Who amongst their retinue are they closest to? 12. Who amongst their retinue do they clash with the most? 13. Are they romantically involved with anyone? Do they wish to be? 14. Who was the most important person in their life prior to becoming a Rogue Trader? Is that person still in their life now? 15. How do they feel towards Theodora? Had they met before? Were they close?

SKILLS & EXPERTISE:

16. What is their Archetype? 17. What are their strengths in combat? What are their weaknesses? 18. How do they approach conflict? Do they tackle problems head-on, or is coercion favourable to them? 19. Which three skills are of the most value to them? 20. Do they have a talent or hobby that would surprise others?

APPEARANCE & PERSONALITY:

21. Do they have any notable markings? Scars, birthmarks, tattoos, etc.? 22. Do they have any augmentations? Were these installed out of necessity, or as a cosmetic choice? 23. How do they hold themselves? Is the persona they show the world different to who they truly are? Who is privy to the ‘real’ them? 24. Do they place value in how their protectorate sees them? Does this sway their decisions at all? 25. Wildcard: Share a fun fact, random thought, or headcanon about them!
