2. ABARAI RENJI — HIHIŌ ZABIMARU

Hihiō (狒々王, Baboon King) Zabimaru (蛇尾丸, Snake Tail) Zabimaru's sealed form resembles a typical katana. It has a rectangular bronze tsuba with a jagged design, and a red handle and sheath. The cowl portion of the Bankai transforms into a large, skeletal arm covered in green fur that follows the movements of Renji's own left arm. Hihiō possesses considerable power, having enough strength to crush bones and effortlessly throw around large opponents with relative ease. It is strong enough to effortlessly lift up a large slab of wall and crush it into pieces with minimal force.

Bathin

The Ars Goetia talks about a serpent's tail, but it also mentions a light horse. I was tempted. A light ponytail, a shade similar to his hair, knee-length. Silky to the touch, the texture is second only to Satan's hair in softness. 

The light blue highlights are not fully visible in the daylight, but when the light is turned off they shine slightly brighter. Interestingly, they seem to glow with irregular light, so they look like tiny comets interwoven.

In the army, they wanted to cut off his long locks because they thought it would hinder him in battle, but he refused. He promised in return that he would wear a braid, but he only does it for mandatory exercises. He doesn't like to tie his tail.

By the way, his tail doesn't stop him from fighting at all.

He only cut his tail once. When Stolas returned from Tartaros plucked and realized what he had done, Bathin trimed his tail in solidarity.

Sensitivity 2/10. Not very affectionate, but he likes to lie on your lap and let you play with his tail while he reads a book.

Gusion

Baboon tail, this is also how he is presented in Ars Goetia, but longer and black, so it’s also similar to a panther. The most similar to Sitri’s, but not so fluffy, thinner, longer, more grippy and Gusion won't bite your hand off if you pull it.

When he was teaching young Satan and Beel and they were naughty (i.e. 90% of the time), he would lift the one closest to him by the foot with his tail and make them repeat the formulas upside down.

He stopped when it turned out they were having fun. 

And started using it again because it turned out that they remembered the formulas way more effectively.

Unlike Amon, he can hold a pen with his tail. He can even write with it. Even if he's not doing anything with his tail, the tip twitches as if he's counting something in his mind.

Overworked boy, even if he doesn't admit it. You saw that when he sleeps on the desk, he covers his eyes with his tail like a blindfold.

Sensitivity 7/10, especially because of how grippy and flexible it is. The fur is quite rough, so if you feel brave, you can rub against it. He definitely prefers to immobilize your hands.

Andrealphus

A long peacock tail, as black as horns. It flows behind him like the train of a dress. The silky feathers are black, or should be, but due to partial albinism the middle part of his tail is white. 

He is unaware of his albinism. Only heard rumors that he poured bleach on his tail to make it match his torn-off wings. And to make it easier to see traces of blood on them.

Peacocks spread their tails when they want to impress someone, but he never spread his. At most, when he is irritated, he raises his tail, but it is still closed.

Once he got angry with Gusion and, in order not to quarrel with him, he turned his back and left. Didn't even notice that his tail had hit him. You know that gesture of turning around and throwing your hair back into someone's face? This vibe. He does fabulous bitchslaps. 

Because he has a feathered tail and is half albinistic, it is considered unique even among the most beautiful ones. Which makes people feel even more sorry for him, because “it's not a warrior's tail, he shouldn't have fought”. He hates this pity.

Sensitivity 4/10… except your every touch is 10/10 to him. He will let you stroke, comb, caress those feathers, ruffle them with pleasure and demand praise. However, since his tail isn't extremely sensitive, and he doesn't pay much attention to his surroundings when you're around him, you have to be careful not to trample him.

If you pamper him enough, you will see this beautiful tail in all its glory.

When I was reading Bleach for the second time, I was surprised by how many characters in the Soul Society weren't actually souls from the living world, but were, like, born there and how this has been going on long enough to essentially form an aristocracy.

I had a specifically worded question about it for you, but it's completely gone now.

How's Renji and his snake-baboon? Personally, I think the swords and by extension Bankai should be able to talk smack more often and was disappointed that animal themed ones didn't become more of a thing.

To answer how I'm handling the "who is born in soul society and who just re-incarnates there?"

If you're a soul that died in particularly charged circumstances, Died particularly young, needed to be escorted by a Shinigami, had to be de-hollowfied or otherwise have wildly unfinished business from your previous life, you're more likely to be reincarnated with at least some of your previous identity. 50/50 chance you'll remember ANYTHING about your previous life though.

If you're a soul that lived a long or particularly fulfilling life, managed to get to the afterlife yourself, were a baby that dies before you were a year old and didn't have a fully developed memory, or are generally chill about the whole "being dead" thing, you're more likely to be reincarnated as a baby birthed in the afterlife, with no recollection of your previous life.

WHO is reborn, who is reincarnated, who goes to soul society and who goes to Hell is not actually Known by Soul Society- the sorting of the Dead is actually the provenance of the Demons of Hell, who have a running metric on every soul in the living and spirit worlds so the second you're dead they've got you sorted.

The Shinigami HAVE been able to make educated guesses about at least some of the metric by keeping extensive notes on the souls they help move on- Who linger and why, who turns into a hollow and why, who goes to Hell and Why etc. but the exact metrics and mechanisms used to assign people's place in the afterlife is a mystery- which is why Soul Society doesn't runite people in the afterlife and has such trouble keeping track of people in the Rukongai- they literally have no input or knowledge of who goes where, when or why.

As for Zabimaru: They (plural- the monkey and the snake) are doing well, though they were more than a little alarmed when Renji was suddenly transferred to the 11th division* after his time in the 5th and found out that, unlike literally every other person** they've met, Zaraki can just passively see and interact with Zanpaktou Spirits***.

*There is extensive chicanery afoot regarding Renji's career in the Gotei-13 **Note: a broader category than just "Human" ***He can't really harm them in spirit form, but he can talk with and generally annoy the shit out of them. This is Extremely Weird, but he's an Extremly Weird case.

Hilariously, Zabimaru gets along GREAT with Senbonsakura, it's just kind of a shame their humans are so bad at playing together.

The New Mexico desert was silent, apart from the occasional howls and yips from far off coyotes. It was for this reason that Engie liked to sit outside after a hard days work, it was a great way to de-stress and wind down. He’d sit himself down on a log and mindlessly strum at his guitar, staring up at the stars. Sometimes he’d start playing a small tune, before it tapered off into random notes. Other times he’d play soft tunes and quietly sing along to them.

Pyro could also be found outside, sitting near Engie and feeding a small fire. They’d throw small twigs and leaves into the fire, and watch the sparks drift up into the star filled sky. The Engineer had asked the firebug once why it loved watching the sparks, they had simply signed back, “I love watching them find their way home.”

Further away, but still close enough to vaguely hear Engie’s strumming, Sniper lay on the top of his camper. The sun bleached metal cool after being in the sun all day. Tonight he was not alone, as the resident spook had made his way on top of the camper. Sniper and Spy liked to lie together in silence and watch the stars, hands entwined together. Sniper would sometimes point out constellations and some facts about them, and occasionally the odd shooting star would flash past, drawing a soft gasp from the pair as they watched it make its way across the night sky. Spy enjoyed this soft side to usually professional sharpshooter, although she’d never admit it to anyone but Sniper. 

Inside the base all was quiet, except for the shuffling of over tired feet as Scout wearily made his way to his room. A day of high exercise and chugging energy drinks had left him exhausted. As he was about to open his door, Soldier shuffled around a corner, looking worse for wear. Soldier glared at Scout, daring him to ask or say anything. But the usually loudmouthed Bostonian just blinked slowly, yawned and disappeared into his room.

Soldier waited until Scout’s door closed before continuing on his way. As he reached his destination, he looked around to make sure that no one was around, before opening the door and quickly going inside. Demo groaned as Soldier slid in under the blankets. The Scotsman didn’t push any further when Soldier buried his head in his chest, an arm wrapping around his torso. He knew that Soldier sometimes got nightmares about his childhood, and on those nights he just needed comfort. It seemed that tonight was one of those nights. Demo pressed a kiss to Soldier’s head as he felt him relax into his chest. Eventually Soldier’s breathing evened out as he fell asleep, coaxing Demo back to sleep as well.

Elsewhere in the base, Heavy and Medic lay together, asleep in each other’s arms. Medic lay with an arm around Heavy’s torso and his head on his chest, where he would listen to the Russians Mega-Baboon heart until it lulled him to sleep. Heavy held Medic in his arms, even while asleep he would make sure his doctor was safe.

I have a question regarding ch 98 that's been bugging me incessantly: in the official translatjon renji says "all i do is bark at the moon", however in fan translations (and anime) renji is seen to be referring to a star. I am unable to find the raws anywhere to ascertain the finality of this conundrum so I was wondering if you could clarify what exactly is the 'object' renji is referring to here and lend us your thoughts?

The Short Version

In the Japanese, Renji says, 星に向かって吠えるばっか ― which could be translated as "I’m just barking at the stars." 

The word he uses is 星 (hoshi), star, not moon. My guess is that the Viz chose "moon" because it’s more idiomatic in English to howl at the moon, and the phrase conveys that sense of lone wolf yearning/misdirection--particularly given that he’s talking about Rukia, and Rukia already has some moon imagery associated with her.

The catch is, the concept of "howling at the moon" also exists in Japanese; for example, there’s a famous modern poet named Hagiwara Sakutarou who wrote a collection titled 月に吠える、or, well, "Howling at the Moon." (You’ll notice the same verb, but 月 (tsuki/moon) instead of 星 (hoshi/star). But that's not what Renji says. I’d argue that it’s worth considering the idea that Renji was making a choice in not using that idiom! 

The Very Long Version

Stars and Moons and Monkeys and Tigers and Snakes and Dogs and-- oh my!

Tomes have been written about celestial symbolism, in Bleach and otherwise. I’m not a big celestial symbolism person, because they’re such BIG symbols I feel like sometimes they can feel very locked in, if that makes sense? Like X = moon and moon = Y and therefore X = Y. And while I love an extended metaphor, my preference is for very unstable, borderline sloppy referents. Which isn’t to say that celestial symbolism can’t be unstable and sloppy, too, and that’s what I really like about this whole Renji section. Renji is the KING of "imagistically, there is a lot going on here, my man."

As far as folklore is concerned, reaching for the moon might call to mind the story of the monkey reaching for the moon’s reflection:

The branch the monkey’s hanging from breaks and he falls into the water. His folly lies in failing to distinguish between what is real and what is illusion.

One one hand, this is fitting for Renji, our resident howler monkey. I don’t know how much baboon we’ve actually seen at this point, but we’ll see Zabimaru’s nue form very shortly. But of course Zabimaru isn’t just a monkey—he also has the head of a snake. And we have this dog imagery, coming from both Renji’s affiliation with Inuzuri and other body parts in some versions of the nue. And later we’ll have TIGER in the mix, too!!

There’s SO much going on. If Renji were a Project Runway creation, Tim Gunn would probably invite his creator edit—maybe choose one motif, one metaphor, one guy who will scan well on the runway.

But Renji exists in excess, he IS all those things, both in terms of his chimerical zanpakutou spirit and in terms of everything we’ve seen of him thus far: tearing through Ishida and Ichigo; herding butterflies with Rikichi; stunting with Rukia in jail; delivering Rukia to prison; getting stunted on by Aizen in a supply closet; being friends with Hinamori; tearing through Ichigo a second time; and now, finally, giving it all up and begging Ichigo: Just save her.

Bone Metaphors

The reader hasn’t seen it yet, but Renji knows what form Zabimaru’s bankai takes. In addition to all those animals and their potential allegories, we also have bone. In Renji's earlier line, there’s an idiom that I wish were preserved:

In the Viz, he says, "I’ll always be a stray dog." In the Japanese, his line is 「骨の髄まで野良犬根性が染み付いてやがるんだ.��Which could be translated as "I am, indelibly, a stray dog to the marrow of my bones /contemptuously." Or, more succinctly:

"I’m a stray dog to the bone."

I love this line because it’s reaching toward Renji’s challenge to Byakuya, insinuating still more layers to Renji’s multitudes.

Different Flavors of Disgust

Still thinking about Renji’s second act in this arc, I am also interested in his subsequent line. He says 厭になるぜ (iya ni naruze), or, in the Viz, "It makes me sick." But I was curious about the kanji 厭 (iya), because it’s more commonly written 嫌 (iya), which can be used as a negative interjection, or, pronounced differently, as the same word you’d use if you hated snails, or homework, or something―嫌い (kirai). Using the kanji 厭 is a less common spelling, though the meaning is similar. So I was like, well, what is the difference? According to this article, the kanji Renji uses is a lot more common in Chinese. If 嫌 is an expression of digust or hatred, 厭 suggests that you’ve specifically gotten tired of something (and are now disgusted with it). It’s the kanji you’d use to create the word for a pessimistic worldview, 厭世観 (enseikan). That is all to say, Renji has become sick and tired of it, and he’s about to change tack.

Failing Poetry 101

Coming back around to the original line, I really like Renji’s "I’m just barking at the stars" specifically because it doesn’t really reference any existing idiom, as might howling at the moon. "Barking at the moon" is an interesting middle ground, in that "barking" definitely feels more dog-like and howling more wolf-like; barking is less majestic, which fits with Renji’s description being derogatory of himself. Renji is not a poet in his use of loaded idioms but in his negation of them. And if Rukia can be described by moon imagery, she too contains multitudes and I think it's well within her power to be the stars, too.

Kira, as Renji’s most poetic friend, probably rolls partway into his grave whenever Renji says stuff like this, because it breaks poetic form. But I think he’s probably also kind of envious that Renji thinks this stuff up, because it’s fresh, new, off-kilter imagery, it is its own kind of poetry, and let's be real, the moon imagery market is fairly saturated. *frames moon with giant rebar hole in body*

So I’d say, "howling at the moon" conjures a certain kind of poetry, steeped in all the macro-folkloric meanings of the moon and dogs/wolves. "Barking at the moon" is kind of half-half. "Barking at the stars" is not a pre-existing idiom (or poem, or expected language), and conjures a completely different referent(s), the immediate of which is, of course, the volume’s own poem. Renji is out here Renji-ing it.

I spent all of my middle grade thru young adult years reading corny fantasy books about people who had telepathic/soul bonds with their dragons or magic horses or swords or birds or whatever. I did not know this at the time, but it prepared me for writing zanpakutou spirits, possibly the best part of writing Bleach fanfiction. I love the idea of having this constant, special companion, who is inextricably part of you and will always be with you and support you, but also is absolutely the worst.

Who is/are your least favorite character(s) and why?: So many, but none I like HATE, I just have no interest in when they're on screen PERSONALLY: Toshiro Gin Hisagi Kira Hinamori Most of the fullbringers Shino Madarame (solely because she brought in the storyline that ikkaku is from a noble/upper class family) Omaeda Bount Arc guys Mod Soul arc guys Kon (just for being a perv) Ulquiorra (i like his design i just...i never get him so i never get into him y'know?) Pepe (...just makes me uncomfortable which is intentional but...) Ability-wise: Sakasama no Sekai (i think it's really fun and relatively simple and can catch anyone off-guard but Katen Kyōkotsu is also fun but soo complicated i still don't fully get its rules sometimes) Aesthetic-wise: Ichigo's initial shikai (talented, brilliant, incredible, iconic)

Favorite bankai?: Ability-wise: Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame (spoilers) (it's op as hell and sooo in character for Urahara with the dissection vibe) Aesthetic-wise: Senbonzakura Kageyoshi (the image of the blades rising in the dark has always stuck with me but there's alot of contenders Katen Kyōkotsu: Karamatsu Shinjū or Minazuki)

Favorite captain?: Kenpachi but I also don't think he's a good captain sdjhgjdhg. So, Shunsui I think, he's the most competent. Or Mayuri, cause he's weird and interesting.

Favorite lieutenant?: I think Ikkaku? Cause of his loyalty. But also his ass does not do the lieutenant's work so actually probably Nanao.

What’s your favorite opening theme from the series?: Orange Range - *Asterisk, OP1 (always and forever)

What’s your favorite ending theme from the series?: My Pace - SunSet Swish, ED 6 (i just like the beat)

Favorite manga panel?: This is like evil, there's too much choice. Like I LOVE kubo's use of negative space so I adore so many of those impact panels. I think Kyoraku Shunsui's Bankai reveal page slays cause of the paint texture. Rose's star blast wound panel. Ichigo's vasto lorde form reveal. Soooo many panels in the Unohanna vs. Zaraki fight like her bankai reveal. I'm going to keep this in mind when I do my re-read after the anime ends and then come back to this kxjhgkjdhfg.

Most heart-wrenching death?: Unohana. I think it was sad for the characters but mostly for ME, cause she served every ounce of cunt and then died. Favorite arc and why? Soul Society: The Sneak Entry Arc, hands down. AND NOT JUST CAUSE YUMICHIKA IS INTRODUCED, it's the arc that has the most fights I'm interested in, the most development for some characters and others get to shine. I do definitely think nostalgia is a big reason too because I think that the first time I ever saw Bleach and it's where I got to in Bleach before dropping off when I was a kid. But I do love it.

Favorite movie and why?: I think Memories of Nobody, maybe Hell Verse? Because I think they had good stories and I remember being really into either it was the animation or emotion of Memories of Nobody. I think Hell Verse, I liked the animation. But honestly, I don't remember much about the movies and I watched them only last year.

Favorite piece of merch that you own? I think it's my Yumichika tote bag? But I love alot of my merch, and especially my Ichigo figure my friend's boyfriend won for me in one of those remote crane games (and it got lost to the transit void and we'd all given up hope).

Do you have any tattoos? Yes. Yumichika cat tattoo by @ kiera_tattoo (no pics cause there's something we need to tweak when I can next get a trip to London ;-; ), but I love it!! still thinking about getting a panel tattoo or sword but atm not Looking for one.

If you’re a fic writer, who do you write for? I don't write fic much but it is Yumichika/Ikkaku but usually just musing on how a reveal might look or their past. It's not really shippy.

If you are an artist, do you have a favorite character to draw?: I don't do fanart much, so I've only drawn Yumichika.

If you could be in the Bleach universe would you be a soul reaper, visored, human, quincy, espada or arrancar?: God I'd probably be a human who sits at home not questioning buildings getting exploded.

Very hyper-specific in location and the reason why but shrugs I need to get out more so this is the only answer I got. The Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo is cool tho.
