Writing/Art Update 8.1.2025

Fanfic update: I am back from vacation. It took longer than I had hoped, but I am finally working on my fanfic again, and I am really gonna finish it this time.

Before I left for the beach, I had one scene left to do, before embarking on Big Edits, and I had hoped to finish it, but it just didn't happen. Since I had already stepped away from it for a week, coming back, I felt like it made more sense tackle the Big Edits first. Basically, i had to kind of do a whole draft of the story before I had a good idea of how I wanted it to progress, so I had to go back to the beginning and just sort of resculpt. I usually don't have to do this, because I usually start with a pretty clear vision of how I want a story to be. I didn't this time, I had to really feel my way through a first pass first. I can't say I enjoyed this process, but at least it wasn't as bad as go places. (I say. Without actually being done yet). ANYWAY, I decided that what I needed to do was make an outline and WOW did having the outline make me feel better. Astonishing.

I've got 13 scenes (a very lucky number for Gotei fanfics; I hope it stays that way), including a scene that I didn't know I needed until I made the outline. I immediately figured that if I could get through at least 1 scene per day, I could be done the thing before the next trip I have to go on. I fixed up the first scene. Great job!

The next day, I managed only marginal progress on Scene II and I realized I had a continuity error in Scene I and also I was pretty sure I hated everything I had done on Scene II the day before. :/

Anyway, it's Day 3 and I have finished Scene II. I just need to keep my expectations low. Lower even than that. It's going fine. I am having fun. Writing my insane fanfic.

Art update: I really need to draw a Renji this week or I am going to die!!!!1

I don't want anybody going into debt for it, but if my funeral has the budget for it, I would like to have a carved portrait on my tombstone depicting Death as some sort of reluctant animal control professional, wielding one of those stick-loop things instead of a scythe, and myself as some sort of a wretched medieval manuscript creature that has no intention to comply with the process of being removed from the premises.

I was skimming through some Klub Outside answers and I am incredibly taken with #777 (thank you to @wheelsome for posting these):

Q777. Other than Captain Ukitake and Captain Kyōraku, as well as Renji, Izuru, and Momo, are there any other pairs or groups who were classmates at the Shin'ō Academy? A777. There are none in the current Gotei 13. Renji’s generation just happens to be a golden generation.

Mostly it's because thinking about Renji, Momo and Kira in contrast to Kuroko no Basuke's Generation of Miracles is the funniest thing in the world to me (can we throw in Shuuhei and Rukia so at least we have a full basketball line-up? I think that makes it worse, actually).

It's also very charming, though, to think about them as having some level of Big Shinigami on Campus luster-- Shuuhei was notable for being recruited right out of school, and there was that poor shinigami from the 12th who got to have like a 4-page monologue on how much he admired Hinamori right before getting blown up. Renji's got Rikichi (how does he make it seem so normal to just have a sidekick??) plus he writes the newspaper column about swordfighting. I mean, I know everyone's got a newspaper column, but I feel like your gotta have a certain level of name recognition to write the swordfighting column in the Gotei newspaper.

Anyway, and then there's Kira. Personally, I think his zanpakutou is extremely rad, and he is a vice-captain, but between the Captain Amagai arc and that one New Year's episode with the kites, he does not seem to get a lot of respect from the Gotei at large. It's kind funny to imagine that he's regarded as, like, the "least payout" member of the Class of 2066, but then he gets that hole blasted in him and comes back all super-sick and the true Kira-heads are like "everyone was sleeping on that guy!!"

Not to hold Kubo up as any kind of paragon of feminism or anything, but I think it was absolutely wild of him to make a kind, pretty, pacificst teenage girl character and give her the superpower of saying "no."
