u know wot im gonna talk about attack the block. its a movie made cause the director was fed up of seeing 'hoodie horror' and charecters like Moses[played by John Boyega in his first acting credit], black kids who got involved in bad stuff/expelled from school beeing shorthand for 'pure evil'

he went around interviewing kids to get the language right and meet people like moses. heres the full quote: "We did find some who were quite similar to Moses, who’d been excluded from school or got involved with bad stuff. And they’re not monsters. They’re very empathic, and when you spend a bit of time with them they’re normal and sweet, enthusiastic and bright. But they’ve just been cornered a bit by life, and I think that often the way they’re portrayed doesn’t help with that. you know what despicable me 3 4 is nice in that there's no drama with gru's adopted daughters feeling bad about their mom and dad having a biological child. they just have a little brother now :)

watching will & harper bc my dad watched it and we talked about it a little bit. lowkey it's stressful to watch harper in all of these situations like watching her have to navigate will's uncertainty and his obvious lack of comfort especially in the beginning. when the two of them have a meal with harper's kids and will asks about how they felt when harper came out and harper's just sitting there silent. the steakhouse bit in particular was really fucking tough; after the leave and will gets upset because he realizes his celebrity put harper in a very dangerous position and harper is the one to soothe him and affirm his allyship.

but then we get moments like harper's sister. and her response to harper coming out was "oh good, i've always wanted a sister" can u imagine coming out at age 55 and ur sister not only responds quickly so u don't have to stress about what she's thinking but that's how ur sister responds. not just acceptance but celebration. not just reassurance but a sort of relief. waough. and the bit where they meet up with dana and u can just see and feel harper relax and come into herself a bit more. getting to see her enjoy another trans woman's company. waouagoagh... harper venturing out into the world alone so she can figure out how to do this shit without the will ferrell buffer effect.

i dont watch a lot of will ferrell stuff or old snl (or any snl for that matter) so im not super familiar with either of their senses of humor but seeing the difference in how will and harper utilize comedy to diffuse uncomfortable situations is so interesting. will's go to is being more awkward, exacerbating it and making it absurd but this also serves to emphasize the perceived taboo against and subversion of the norm/the expected. harper leans into the tension, approaches it straight on with dead pan delivery and a focus on witty one liners, she subverts the punchline so the absurd is the only logical conclusion. a very "the only way out is through" approach to it that feels informed by her being trans

i keep thinking abt the love aspect of lisa and rly wish the campfire conversations had more positive interactions /without brad in them/ cuz a common interpretation i see that i couldnt disagree more with is that everyone in lisa is an asshole when all the companions are so different in personality and morals and shiet so how come most of the interactions turn out wrong cuz the better guys are either paired with brad or getting trashed on by the meaner companions or just plain got nothing it just doesnt sit right with me 😔😔
