Top 10 Seasonal Stars of the Fall Garden
Spring perennial bloomers are easy. There are so many great spring performers that you always have something blooming all spring long with little effort. Fall can be a little trickier to have a constant parade of colorful bloomers, and I always am looking for new candidates and old favorites. Mums and asters are the usual suspects when people think of fall flowers, but there are so many more.…

Plant of the Day
Saturday 5 October 2024
In my friend‘s old cottage garden on Orkney this cultivar, probably of Colchicum autumnale 'Pleniflorum' (meadow saffron, autumn crocus, fog crocus, meadow crocus, Michaelmas crocus, upstart), has been here for decades in a sheltered border. This cormous herbaceous perennial flowers in the autumn and will produce large leaves in the spring.

Scientific Name: Brickellia eupatorioides or Brickellia macranthra Common Name(s): False boneset or Texas false boneset Family: Asteraceae (aster) Life Cycle: Perennial Leaf Retention: Deciduous Habit: Forb USDA L48 Native Status: Native Location: Plano, Texas Season(s): Fall
Brickellia eupatorioides previously comprised a number of sub-taxa that were reclassified as full species in a 2022 paper (PDF). Among these, only B. eupatorioides (sensu stricto) and and the new species B. macranthra (known as B. eupatorioides var. texana before) are found in the county where Plano is located. As outlined in the paper, examining the phyllaries and counting the florets are how to distinguish the two from each other, but I’m not good enough to see those differences after the plant has gone to seed. As the name suggests, Texas false boneset (B. macranthra) is endemic mostly to Texas and Oklahoma, whereas false boneset (B. eupatorioides) can be found throughout the eastern half of the United States.

I love the wizening beauty of our backyard gardens in autumn. The relaxed mess of fading flowers and wild weeds. The blast of color from September blooms. The cherry tomatoes are still popping and ripening. The potted marigolds are top heavy, and the pansies are still gorgeous. As the autumn leaves mix with fallen begonia petals in the still green grass, I lay a wreath of spent sunflowers around the birdbath. “To everything there is a season…”

Plant of the Day
Friday 22 November 2024
In the autumn and late winter the stems and autumn colour of the foliage of Lythrum virgatum 'Dropmore Purple' (wand loosestrife) add a delicate structure to an herbaceous border. This clump-forming perennial grows in any reliably moist soil in full sun.

The above are concepts classified according to subject and usage. It not only helps writers and thinkers to organize their ideas but leads them from those very ideas to the words that can best express them.
It was, in part, created to turn an idea into a specific word. By linking together the main entries that share similar concepts, the index makes possible creative semantic connections between words in our language, stimulating thought and broadening vocabulary.

Scientific Name: Calyptocarpus vialis Common Name(s): Straggler daisy, horseherb Family: Asteraceae (aster) Life Cycle: Perennial Leaf Retention: Semi-evergreen Habit: Forb USDA L48 Native Status: Introduced (or not — see below the cut) Location: Richardson, Texas Season(s): Fall
Here in North Texas, this is an all-seasons, evergreen plant. Regarding its native distribution, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center notes the species is
Native to 5 southern coastal states, per ARS GRIN. USDA Plants does not consider it native anywhere in North America.
Both ARS GRIN (Agricultural Research Service Germplasm Resources Information Network) and USDA Plants are arms of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, so I have no idea who’s right. Native status aside, C. vialis is is the only species within its genus found in the United States, so at least it can’t be confused with other members of the same genus.

Echinacea purpurea, eastern purple coneflower, purple coneflower, hedgehog coneflower, or echinacea (lat. Echinácea purpúrea). A perennial herbaceous plant native to North America.
Many scientific articles have been written about the medicinal properties of echinacea. I recommend contacting them better, as they will reveal the benefits of this plant in more detail and professionally than me. For my part, I would like to share a recipe for tea with echinacea, because autumn is the season when we get sick more often and our body needs additional help🥰
☕️The recipe for tea with echinacea: 1-2 fresh flowers (not fully opened) or 2 tsp. of dry collection, brew 0.5 liters of boiling water and insist for a few minutes, then you can strain. You can add rosehip berries and honey. The drink turns out to be spicy and fragrant. The only thing is, it is better not to abuse it and not to drink for longer than 1-2 weeks in a row💚
Эхина́цея пурпурная (лат. Echinácea purpúrea).
