Cladonia pleurota

Red-fruit pixie-cup

Why are the apothecia of C. pleurota and some other species of Cladonia bright red? WE DON'T KNOW! Isn't it infuriating fascinating?

Y'know the thing people do in movies/shows where there like a monster/creature place and they poke a stick in there to investigate? Then it comes out shorter cause it got all chomped or broken? I want them to stick the stick in there and it comes back longer

Miriquidica deusta

This crustose lichen has a gorgeous areolate (tile-like) thallus made up of shiny, dark brown areoles (tiles) with white edges, sitting on a black hypothallus (fungal hyphae growing under the main thallus, attaching it to the substrate). It has black apothecia which start out immersed, and become more prominent with age. Most European specimens are sterile (meaning they don't have apothecia) which resulted in M. deusta being miscategorized and overlooked for a long time. From what we can tell now, it grows on base-rich, exposed rock, and has a wide but disjunct range.
