Best of 2024

So I read 82 books this year the grand majority lgbtqia books. I know this is coming out a little bit after the first but I like these kinds of lists. So I like Scifi fantasy!! I’m hoping to have even more lgbtqia books in the future

okay into my go to rereads first. I think an often over looked category is what series actually feels good to listen to or read repeatedly? For me it’s got to be these books

Book Review: Thousand Autumns Vol. 1

Historical Danmeis are known for their martial cultivation storylines and are usually depicted as good versus evil. Meng Xi Shi takes the cultivation storyline to the next level in Thousand Autumns because a religious war between Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism is at the forefront of this epic.

This first book is super heavy on story building, which sets the pace for the rest of the journey for our main characters, Yan Wushi and Shen Qiao. Meng Xi Shi does a fantastic job of detailing the context of this religious war through the eyes of Shen Qiao as he learns the world around him after losing his title, martial arts, memory, and sight. 

Shen Qiao, our good but not pure main character, does not hesitate to execute justice swiftly. He is patient and understanding of the complexity of human nature, extending grace to many and intolerance to those whose malice cannot be allowed to persist. Truly living out the mantra "it is what it is," he does not dwell or get emotional guilt over his actions, especially when he has to take a life. He is balanced by Yan Wushi, our resident bad boy who is a menace to society. He is worthy of the confidence that he carries because he is so powerful in martial skills and thoughts. In a world where cultivation is based on religion, he shows no loyalty to any religion and cultivation method. Instead, he knows the power that he can wield by cultivating the best of all the methods. 

Both characters are depicted with a sense of maturity that reflects their age and experiences. This is refreshing, as this is not common within the Danmei genre. The maturity of the couple and the novel's themes are paired with flowery language appropriate for mature or advanced readers. The flowery language used to describe what is happening immerses readers in this epic journey. The word choices, sentence structures, imagery, and evoked emotions make this book an excellent source for practicing critical thinking and analysis. (This book is an annotator’s dream book.)

The nuance in the metaphors used makes this Danmei so beautifully compelling. I cannot express how much I appreciate and love Meng Xi Shi's choice of flowery words in this one review. I cannot wait to see how the story progresses!

Books I been reading lately:

Otherside Picnic by Iori Miyazawa: 8 volume light novel yuri horror series. Almost done with volume 4 now. Taking my time but I like it a lot. The horror is scary and the yuri is sweet. The horror is based on Japanese net lore and "true ghost stories." It's about two women who meet in another world connected to our own, where mysterious entities try to communicate with humans through our fear. There's one season of an anime based on it by the same name, which I loved enough I had to read the books.

Heaven Official's Blessing / Tian Guan Ci Fu by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu: 8 volume tianxia danmei series, about an immortal fail prince and the ghost king who loves him. Also started reading these after seeing and loving the show. Read them all then got hit with the book withdrawal very hard. Might have to read the manhwa too the art looks gorgeous.

Thousand Autumns / Qian Qiu by Meng Xi Shi: 5 volume historical wuxia danmei, taking place during the late Northern and Southern Dynasties of Imperial China. Evil guy meets good guy, decides to turn him evil, fails so hard he falls in love. This one grabbed me good I finished all 5 volumes in 4 days. Not for everyone! Read if you like yandere shit I guess. I really love the writing style of the 7 seas translation, it's so evocative. Haters may say it's purple prose, I say it's pretty.

Thousand Autumns vol5 final thoughts

9/10 SERIES

Wow? So I kind of was thinking there can’t be a healthy relationship where there is respect in the danmei world but… let me tell you Yan Wushi and Shen Qiao are equals in the end as far as love for each-other goes. I believe Yan Wushi is my fave too I’m sorry Luo Binghe but I love this man. He’s the most funny sexy love interest. I would mark where in the book he’d disappear and reappear because without Yan Wushi the book is difficult haha. Shen Qiao grew on me as a lead. He’s just a good good boy. If you want a comparison think Superman and Yan Wushi is Batman.

Okay the sell for book 5: it’s time for Shen Qiao to fall in love with Yan Wushi and admit to it. Also Yan Wushi has some scores he wants to settle. Now a word of warning there are some drier bits of this book I struggled to read the parts without Yan Wushi. HOWEVER Yan Wushi’s little disciples are funny and our girl our queen Bai Rong are there in the boring parts too to get you along. The scenes with Shen Qiao and Yan Wushi were amazing as always they truly have an enemies to lovers plot line. They are perfect for each other. Idk just precious. Shen Qiao is not the most interesting person but you can tell to Yan Wushi he has come to love this earnest common boy.

Anyways on to my fave lines cause I feel like the book’s quality speaks for itself and photos
