So I have a dormant scooby doo hyperfixation (that comes back now and then) and since the new Velma show is trending rn I feel the urge to tell everyone that in the Mystery Incorporated series Fred is canonically autistic with a special interest in making traps and I never see anyone mention this. It was confirmed in a video that’ll be linked at the bottom of this post.
But yeah, aside from all the other problems with the new Velma show (disclaimer: I haven’t seen the show yet but have seen some previews and have heard things about it that have given me very low hopes for how the show will be) one of the biggest icks for me so far is making Fred into a shallow and arrogant asshole popular rich boy stereotype instead of going the Mystery Inc route and making him a classic himbo and autistic who’s obsessed with building traps.
Autistic Fred Jones is the best version of Fred Jones. I love that he displays autistic characteristics without being a lazy one dimensional stereotype of autism. In the show, from what I remember (I need to give it a rewatch), he has a clear special interest in building traps to the point that it defines his life and affects his relationships, he struggles a lot with interpersonal relationships, indirect communication and social signals (especially when it comes to being oblivious to Daphne’s romantic signals, and the issues this causes in their relationship). But he’s not one dimensional, in fact he has more emotional complexity in this series than in any other rendition of Scooby Doo, in my opinion, and even though he’s autistic he’s still a conventionally attractive man and a central character who is desired by one of the main, attractive female leads in the show, which I almost NEVER see.
This Reddit post goes a bit more into the specifics of his autistic traits, for anyone interested.
Here’s the video I mentioned:
youtube
This post is about Fred, but I also wanted to mention that I have a lot of love for the Mystery Inc creators deliberately writing Velma as a lesbian who was struggling with coming to terms with her sexuality throughout the show, and giving her a canonical sapphic love interest, in a time where having a queer character in the main cast of a kids show was unheard of.
Anyway, I recommend watching Mystery Inc if you don’t want to watch the new Velma show but still want to watch something that hits the Scooby Doo nostalgia spot. It still has the fun of classic Scooby Doo that speaks to my inner child but it’s also dark and complex enough to appeal to teen and adult audiences (as well as younger audiences) without over the top edginess.

I just started Mystery Incorporated and I have a headcanon that at some point Fred is diagnosed with autism and he does some research into it. Having realized that Daphne doesn't feel like her affection is reciprocated and having done some soul searching with his therapist he prepares a little speech in his head and then sits her down and explains that his way of affection is just different.
While at first she's unsure of Fred being autistic because she has some misconceptions (not her fault, they're abundant), he explains that it looks different for everyone and shows her some websites he found and by the end they're laughing about how many of the traits he has and she accepts it. And then he explains that when he talks to her about traps that's his way of showing affection because he loves traps and wants to share the things he loves with the people he cares about. And sure, that's Velma and Shaggy and Scooby too, but it's especially Daphne because he cares about her romantically. And when he apologizes in case he ever made her feel like he didn't care she just hugs him and says that he's very sweet and she'll never look at nets the same way.
After that Daphne does a ton of research and ends up noticing little ways to support Fred — which she does. If someone's taking advantage of his being good-natured and having difficulty with social cues, she stands up for him and makes sure he's being treated fairly. And when Fred ends up going on a tangent about traps she listens more carefully because she realizes it's his way of showing his affection. On the weekends they cuddle and watch TV together and Fred gets very hyperfixated on Daphne's favorite shows, which she finds very sweet because she knows he's investing himself in her passions because he's invested in her.
I've shipped this pair for so long (since childhood tbh) and now knowing that Fred has been written as autistic makes me so happy. Autistic Fred Jones owns my heart honestly and while in many episodes Daphne doesn't seem to understand his special interests, I love the idea of them having a chance to sit down and discuss it and just becoming even closer because they're able to appreciate each other's way of showing love. I think it'd be really cute. Maybe once I have some time I'll write some fanfics about it. :)

Random Passionate Thoughts about Scooby Doo and Autistic Fred:
I know a lot of people HC Fred as Autistic in the TV show “Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorperated” and I totally agree.
But I wanted to share my thoughts on a specific scene and how it displays Autistic!Fred’s different way of expressing affection:
Even tho Dafnie can’t appriated it, I love this scrapbook so much! Its not just traps, it is memories. Fred remembers when each trap was used, this is how he shares those good memories with others!
We all know Fred’s Autism Hyperfixation/Special Interest is his traps, so I love how the writers showed how that affects the way he shares his feelings and affections.
OK I’m done now :)

You know what Velma (2023) maybe Fred Jones DOES have a small dick. So what? That trap loving man would dick 👏 me 👏 down 👏. Oh he’s ~oblivious~? He’s autistic with a special interest in mysteries. What is the female orgasm but a complex mystery most men can’t figure out? Yeah you’d have to listen to his lecture about traps and the pros and cons to different types of ropes but honestly? Part of the experience.
#you just blew my back out and wanna talk about traps#go ahead babe#rope bunnies would KILL to have Fred Jones tie them up#velma 2023#hbo velma#mystery machine#scooby doo#autistic fred Jones#Fred Jones#autism headcanon#mine#rope bunny

Scooby Doo Redesign
Because I cannot stop thinking about it.
[art credits at bottom]
Fred Jones
💙 Frederick Steven Jones
💙 19 years old
💙 he/him
💙 Currently identifies as bisexual, but he’s still figuring it out.
💙 Autism
💙 Caucasian (like, the whitest boy to ever white)
💙 Adopted by a middle class family as a baby. Considers his birth parents the biggest mystery yet.
💙 Mom friend of The Gang. He has a satchel that’s really just a mom purse that he takes on all the mysteries. It has baby wipes in it.
💙 Is the one who got the whole Gang to really start hanging out. He dragged them along on their first mystery. Apparently almost dying is a big bonding experience.
💙 Owns the Mystery Machine. He bought it at a junk yard and fixed it up himself. It was a labor of love and he cares about it more than anything in the world (except maybe his friends)
💙 Hyperfixates on mystery and/or traps.
Shaggy Rogers
💚 Norville Dennis Rogers
💚 20 years old
💚 he/him or they/them
💚 Pansexual demiboy
💚 Anxiety, ADHD
💚 Black/African-American
💚 Born into a new-money, rich family. They were very supportive of Shaggy when he told them he didn’t want to take over the family business.
💚 He is usually either stress eating for has the munchies.
💚 Scooby Doo is his support animal. He doesn’t do the best job (considering) but it’s the thought that counts and Scoob would never leave Shaggy hanging.
💚 Got the name “Shaggy” In kindergarten because he refused to let the barber cut his hair all year.
💚 Has a prescription for medical marijuana. Uses it liberally.
Velma Dinkley
🧡 Velma Ruth Dinkley
🧡 18 years old (baby of The Gang)
🧡 she/her or they/them
🧡 Lesbian
🧡 Autism
🧡 Jewish-Mexican
🧡 Both of her parents are Jewish-Mexican as well. They own a small tourist shop in their town and live comfortably enough to be considered middle-class.
🧡 Has literally the worst vision ever. Lenses so thick she has to get a special coating on them so they aren’t so heavy.
🧡 Doesn’t necessarily believe in God or religion, but still practices because it was mostly how she bonded with her parents as a kid.
🧡 Skipped a grade in elementary school. She could have skipped another, but her parents didn’t want her to be with kids that much older than her.
🧡 Hyperfixates on different science fields and history. Comes in handy a lot during mysteries.
Daphne Blake
💜 Daphne Ann Chun Blake
💜 19 years old
💜 she/her
💜 Bisexual transgender
💜 ADHD
💜 Korean-Scottish
💜 Born into an old-money, rich family. Her parents have very high expectations of her and often compare her to her older sisters.
💜 Her mother is Scottish and her father is Korean. He took her last name when they married, but Daphne and all her sisters have the second middle name “Chun” because that was his family name. Somehow Daphne and all her sisters got their mom’s red hair.
💜 When she came out as trans to her parents, they were actually really supportive because they had always wanted all daughters.
💜 Jack of all trades. Her parents made her do everything they could think of to make her “well-rounded” which just ended with her having a lot of random skills.
💜 Has difficulty sticking to one thing for too long before getting bored of it. The mysteries keep her on her toes.
Other info
❤️ The Gang met in a history class they all had together. Shaggy was a senior and needed to retake the class to graduate. The rest of the gang were juniors.
❤️ They are all in a polyamorous relationship with each other. I might make a chart later. Who knows?
❤️ Scooby talks. There is no explanation. No one questions it.
❤️ They are a family. This is very important. They all care about each other.
