YOU BETTER STOP. and to think i had classmates before who cheered him on for exploiting the unprivileged and the oppressed like this bc "haha the indios' rebellion go brrr" but shits on activists and people who hold leftist political ideologies now by red-tagging them,,,, wild. like look around!! see what state we are in right now for people to be desparate enough to rebel and oppose the clowns, murderers, and the thieves in power. WILD.

juli's servitude still makes my heart hurt even now too :( it's just all so fucking cruel for all of them involved. selo just loves her granddaughter so much it breaks his heart enough to want death over seeing juli suffer being a servant instead of being the rich maiden, comfortable and well, that he had envisioned and wanted her to be…juli just loves her father so much that she tried all the plans and ideas she was offered just to earn money…juli just also loves basilio so much that she thinks she wouldn't be good enough for him but is at least comforted by the thought that she didn't sell the locket that he gave her as a sign of her loyalty….crying in the club rn. i understand why it's so frustrating at a logical standpoint tho because selling the locket would really really help them & basilio would give 0 fucks about the locket as long as juli and her family would be safe and well arrghhh I FEEL SO FRUSTRATED OVER IT AS WELL

and they were supposed to arrest tales, as tales did commit murder but since he wasn't to be found they arrested tatang selo. (also Tales wasn't framed :( he intentionally left a trace behind because, well, vengeance. it's a sign and a threat to the authorities. :') )

i literally do not think there was any law out there at that time that states that they'd arrest another family member if the one who committed a crime wasn't present?? i mean i know like it was a colonization thing and the filipinos were heavily, heavily oppressed but i was thinking about if there were still any laws involved in this that i don't know about. does this make sense.

though granted the only thing we learned at school about laws in the spanish colonization era was the polo y servicio & nothing else, and to dive into the criminal laws in the Philippines in the 1800s at 12 AM is very tempting but i can't because i don't have the brain cells for it. i'm so sorry 😭 but even if that was validated by the law - which grants executions anyway?? actually??? and the system was GREATLY unjust and unfair towards Filipinos??? why is this mind-boggling sorry i'm very stupid HGSHGSHGAH - that was still unjust, tyrannic bullshit. and i wanna fucking fight simoun for being delighted at all literally fuck him

And a crush on one Will Solace. i'm such a sucker for socmed au's and this one is done SO so well. my all time favorite. and it's sequel too!! the formatting i am in awe of, but other than that, it's just a really good time and i just love all the little details. i've reread this too many times to count and was SO excited when a sequel was published, and i can only hope that there's more to the au in the future!! Nico di Angelo, despite not realizing he's a missing person, is the subject of one of the episodes. They meet by chance in a random bar, and shenanigans ensue. i mean, if it's got a taylor swift title, i'm already sold. and then it's part of a series called "Hey Stephen is a solangelo song and i will die on that hill" which is the realest thing ever?? but ASIDE from that, i could honestly rec this entire series (+ the other series it's a part of, "Nothing to See Here" which is all part of the same au) and also everything by this author - it's hilarious, i just love the premise, and the writing is so good!! and hey stephen is a solangelo song, thereby reinforcing my "fearless is will's favorite album ever of all time and i will die on this hill" argument

His trials are over; why isn’t he back on Olympus? okay so. this is a bit of a longer fic. and it's a post-toa, pjoxmcga crossover, and it's not *entirely* focused on solangelo - but when i tell you that this fic, if i weren't reading it on ao3, i would truly and full-heartedly believe was a real life published novel - i am NOT LYING. i rec'd this to my friend right after i read it bc i was just like so so obsessed with it and it's literally just. the plot?? is insane. i'm in awe of the author, bc this isn't even the only novel-length fic that they've written with an insane plot too (their fic Eclipse is also phenomenal, but it's more focused on apollo and hades so i didn't rec it here) there's some fierrochase here, lester being lester, and some very very very cute solangelo! and meg! i think sometimes you read a fic and you're like "oh, shit, that could be a novel, and i would think it's better than some actual novels i've read" and this is one of them

The Joy Leaving the Work

This post will be discussing the works of Neil Gaiman and my personal relationship with them. If you don't like that or cannot handle that, kindly don't read. Also, there will be allusions to SA in the discussions.

So, a couple of weeks ago I decided to pick up Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman-- a book I've owned for a couple of years that's been in my "to read pile" waiting its turn. In the light of the allegations against Gaiman, I put off reading it a couple of months more as I tried to process how I felt. Now I've read it.

Background: Neil Gaiman has been my favorite author bar none ever since I read Coraline in 5th Grade. He and Sir Terry Pratchett share a bookshelf of honor in my room- the one right behind my bed, so I can easily reach for a comfort read. I've always loved his twists on various stories-- The Graveyard Book and Neverwhere being two of my favorites. The dark-but-not-too-dark tone, the dry humor, the magical realism, all of it. Anansi Boys looked like it would have all of that.

And it did! In a vacuum, this would have been a very enjoyable read. But with the allegations, I noticed things that I wouldn't have before. For example (spoilers, I guess):

Mr. Nancy (the titular Anansi) is a funny old man, and often a bit lecherous. In his final moments, he's doing karaoke with some young, buxom blondes when he has a heart attack and falls off the stage, hand outstretched. As he goes down, he sticks his hand out, grabbing one girl's tube top and exposing her as he dies.

This anecdote in the book is presented as something that embarrasses his son (our protag) but is generally interpreted by the other characters as something that was just so funny and charming.

It made me uncomfortable. In fact, just about every time Mr. Nancy alluded to his Master Roshi-like interest in buxom young women, I felt uncomfortable. But wait, there's more:

Spider (secret twin brother of protag Fat Charlie) is interested in Fat Charlie's fiancee. He tricks her into thinking that he IS Fat Charlie, and this girl who had been saving her virginity til marriage is so taken by him that they have sex. Meaning not only did he entice the girl to sex under false circumstances (this is rape), but it's also unclear as to how much of her going along with him is really HER and how much is his... mojo, I suppose. To the story's credit, once she realizes what has happened she gets angry and breaks up with both of them, no longer wanting anything to do with them... until, of course, happenstance brings them together again and she admits that she had real feelings for Spider, who finds himself wanting to behave better for her.

That doesn't sit right with me in the best of circumstances. These are not the best of circumstances.

I finished the book and it took me this long- two weeks and change- to decide how I feel about it. And how I feel about it is this-- I cannot separate it from the author. I cannot enjoy this book because the slime from Gaiman's actions oozes all over it. And that sucks.

I'm almost afraid to reread my favorites from him, for fear that my happy memories of those books will be ruined too. That SUCKS.

And it makes me feel dumb for never having seen the misogyny in the books before. It's like when Rowling showed herself to be what she was and I couldn't enjoy Harry Potter anymore, but worse because Gaiman is an author that I was still actively reading, who had been vocally supportive of queer and trans people, who I'd still looked up to. When it all went down with Rowling, I realized that I'd been excusing a lot of problematic shit in her writing as ignorance, rather than malice. But it WAS malice. And now I'm wondering if I didn't make the same mistake with Gaiman. That sucks too.

Anyway. That's my rant. Thanks for listening. Please share if you're having issues like this too, it's good to not feel alone.

Your phone dings, drawing your attention away from the book you’ve been devouring for the last hour. You blink several times before staring at the text you just received in total disbelief.

A few seconds later another message pops up.

‘I’m sorry’

Your heart races as you reread both. He can’t be serious. No way. After how you spent all evening together? The fresh memory floods your mind…

- Flashback begins -

Yeosang smirks as his fingers curl inside you, bringing you closer and closer to the edge.

“Wait, wait!” you rush as you reach for your ringing phone, “That’s my boss's ringtone.”

“Go on, answer it.” His eyes flare, “I dare you.”

You’re not one to back down from a challenge, so you do. And at that very same moment, his lips find their way around your already sensitive clit.

“H-Hello,” you answer shakily, “Yes Ma’am, your schedule? It’s been confirmed and emailed to you. Uh-huh. Yes, okay. Will do.” You answer your boss's questions quickly and silence your moans with a hand over your mouth as she rambles on about flights for her upcoming trip.

Your breath catches in your throat as the heat grows hotter in your lower belly, you’re almost there.

Yeosang groans as your walls begin to tighten around his fingers. “God, you’re perfect,” he whispers before licking you right where you need him. “Let go for me, baby.”

“I’ll look into it and get back to you!” you rush out, quickly hanging up before she’s suspicious, and come undone onto your boyfriend's fingers and mouth, leaving behind a soft sheen of your release.

“That’s my good girl. I love you.”

- Flashback ends -

And that was just the start of the night. So what changed between then and now? He suddenly doesn’t love you anymore?

That thought sends a sharp pain directly to your chest and tears well in your eyes while you type a message back to him.

So his mind is already made up. It’s a good thing that your workday is almost over. You need to go home and cry. Maybe you’ll doordash some dinner and ice cream too. You certainly deserve it.

The ride home on the train is quick, and thankfully no one pays any attention to you as tears fall silently. And before you know it, you’re staring at a box half full of things that belong to Yeosang.

Your fingers play with the bracelet around your wrist, the one he bought you for your three-month anniversary. Its charms are a sun, strawberry, and pie slice, all of which are a small reminder of the day you first met.

- Second flashback begins -

The soft spring sunshine tickles your skin as you walk to the train station in the mid-morning light. The birds are singing, flowers are blooming, and it seems like it’s going to be a good day.

You smile. Not just a good day, a great day.

All of those happy thoughts come quickly crashing down when something from above smacks onto your head, easily knocking you down to the ground.

You gasp after the sudden impact. “Ow. What the fuck?” Your fingers reach up and touch something gooey that’s now covering your hair and face. “Ew.”

“Oh my god! Are you okay?” a stranger asks, kneeling down beside you to help. “Here, I’ve got a couple of napkins in my pocket. Let me help you.”

“What is it? Why is it warm and sticky?!” you panic, not sure exactly what to do in this situation.

“It seems to be a type of dessert? A strawberry pie, perhaps?”

“You’re kidding,” you groan. “So someone decided to just throw a pie out a window? The universe hates me.”

The kind stranger laughs, “Or maybe the universe thought you could use a little more sweetness in your life?”

“Unlikely, but thanks,” you say, using one of the napkins he handed you to wipe your eyes clean. You can see better now, he’s a cute stranger - if you have to be totally honest. Of course you would meet someone attractive in a ridiculous way like this. It’s just your luck.

You lick your lips, it’s tasty at least. “What a waste of good pie.”

“I can’t believe it landed directly on your head. I watch the whole thing happen in slow motion,” he says, struggling to hold back another laugh. “I’m Yeosang. Normally I don’t laugh at pretty girls who almost get knocked out by flying desserts, so my apologies.”

“Apology accepted. I’m Y/N, normally I don’t smell like I came directly out of a strawberry bake off but here we are.”

- Second flashback ends -

And that was the beginning of it all.

Sometimes you question how everything could have turned out if that day had gone differently. For instance, if you would have been slightly late to leave for work you wouldn’t be sobbing while packing up his things right now. Which is the last thing you thought you would be doing after falling so easily for him.

But you’ve never been one to beg for someone to stay. You’ve always said, if they wanna leave, let them.

‘He’s worth fighting for.’ The voice in your head practically screams at you. ‘Don’t give up so easily.’

Your doorbell chimes, breaking your thoughts and letting you know that he’s here. He has a key, which is how he normally lets himself in, but you guess things are different now.

You take a deep breath before opening the door, not sure what to expect exactly.

“Hi,” he smiles nervously and looks down at his hands which are holding…flowers? “Can we pretend the last four hours didn’t happen? I had a momentary freak-out and realized that texting you about breaking up was a mistake.”

“What?” your brows furrow in confusion.

“I still want to be with you. It just kind of hit me earlier how much I love you and I can’t imagine you not being in my life. But everyone leaves me at some point, and to make it hurt less I thought that by breaking up with you, it would make a future difficult thing less painful in the present.”

“Well,” you ask, crossing your arms. “Did it work?”

“No, I’m an idiot.”

“That may be true, but I love you anyway.” You hug him tightly and let out the breath you didn’t know you were holding. “Next time you want to run because you’re scared, just remember that I will always love you, even when you make mistakes - like believing that I’m going to leave you.”

“Well, that’s good to know. I’m still sorry.”

“Good. You should be.”

dumb fic thoughts that are going to sound whiney and like personal complaints but i promise are really me talking big picture about the state of fic engagement on ao3. and i know i've been on this soapbox before and I KNOW everyone who follows me is a homie so i’m really just old man yells at skying about this again, but just let me say all the quiet parts out loud please. I do not wish to be aloof and demure.

1. hits to kudos ratios are so fucking bleak. and i don't mean wrt my own fics, i mean in general, the two numbers side by side is always so dismal to see. hits are kind of a meaningless metric, esp for chaptered fics and for fics that people return to to reread, so i wish ao3 just wouldn't publish them, because it sets up this weird pair of numbers for people to compare and jump to conclusions based upon, even though they aren't actually informative for anyone. Why do I want to know how many people clicked on something? That doesn’t tell me anything.

2. That being said (to make it about me now), I know I’m a good fic writer. and while obviously my fic isn’t going to be to everyone’s taste (puppet smut isn’t a crowdpleaser wym??), I feel pretty confident that out of the 250+ people who have clicked on my brand new fic so far, more than just 17 of them must’ve liked it. which brings me to…

3. people can get so cagey about leaving kudos on explicit fics. this is a time-tested truth. let's let go of this phenomenon! I promise no one's stalking where you've left kudos. if they are, they're a freak. and if they're judging you, they're especially a freak because HEY LOOK, they wouldn’t have seen it if they weren’t on that fic too lol! let's all try and shake off these fucking shackles of sexual shame and stigma.

4. similarly, the # of bookmarks that i can see on an explicit fic i've posted vs the # of bookmarks the public can see is so funny. This one makes more sense to me and I can understand why bookmark choices feel more private. But i will say again, people aren't judging your bookmarks. even if it's smut! no one cares what you get horny about and probably the only reason they'd be looking is bc they trust your judgment and they'd like to get horny about it too lol.

5. lack of feedback/interaction is such a scourge. We all gotta fucking engage with the writers we like! it means so much and it's such a great way to build a mutually supportive community. Also, people who have left comments on my fic and vice versa are the people i became most immediately PALS with on here. It’s a lovely thing to do and it’s not time intensive I promise! Authors don’t seek comments for validation but more because publishing fic is sharing this thing this offering that you became so obsessive and giddy about that you had to literally create it and once it’s out you just want to be giddy and obsessive with others about it.

6. Obvs no one should feel obligated to leave kudos or bookmark or comment on anything they don’t like. Be a discerning reader and engage with what brings you joy! There’s a ton of shlock out there. No one has to pretend to like it all. But societally I feel like we’ve become such selfish consumers - I see it in streaming our favorite music for .0000000000000000000000000000002 cents, in the erosion of concert etiquette, in the rabid sense of entitlement towards celebrities’ attention and time, in the uncredited circulation of other people’s art without a second thought, and in the way apparently only ~10% of readers leave kudos, which are a paltry way for an author to get a sense if someone liked something enough to take the most bare bones possible step of simply tapping a button (you don't even have to have an account! you can leave kudos as a guest!). that's a bummer. I don’t want fandom to be a selfish one-sided space where we’re just taking what we want instead of connecting or building together.

Honestly ricks new book has just inspired me to reread wcwsthwas again.

I'm convinced Rick doesn't remember who his characters are anymore.

ill be the first to admit my characters can also be ooc! i think ive also fallen into the 'annabeth as a mom friend' trap (though piper is usually annabeth's mom in my fic) and i do think i have a lot of work to do keeping my characterizations consistent.

but heres the crux of my problem, right: this isnt my job. im a girl in my twenties who works full time and writes for fun. my ao3 is my hobby, and the characters i write are not canon. thats why it KILLS ME that rick writes with such a loose pen. in this new book, ive seen at least 5 inconsistencies, and thats IGNORING the timeline one (because why are people acting like leo is alive???). he has changed....just core things about characters. like grover the vegetarian eating a bacon sandwich and clovis now being morpehus' son. lack of attention to the little details, imo, just shows a lack of care. and as @glove23 pointed out, it shows that he really doeant respect his readers. he's acting like we're idiots, like we arent going to notice the changes. and, at the risk of aounding like a scooby doo villain, HES GETTING AWAY WITH IT TOO!! twitter laps up everything he does. it infuriates me to a whole other level.

this man is retconning shit left and right, tweaking stories previous to suit whatever new one he's writiig at the moment, and it just comes off as disrespectful and sloppy. fic writers are doing better than him at just about everything at this point. im not even talking about ME. there are heaps of really incredible pjo authors who seem to understand and respect the source material far more than rick seems to these days. and thats a goddamn shame.

ive read snippets of the book - some parts are okay and some are passable but most feel...weird. i dont know if its just me, but even the percabeth felt off. i hate how percy calls himself dumb in, like, every second sentence. when did that become a thing? and WHY? i wouldnt be surprised if this was ghostwritten. tbh, i hope it is. like you said, it feels like rick doesnt know how to write his characters anymore :/ sucks but i feel like i need to add a disclaimer to every fic now: this author has read only the original pjo and hoo books and all characters are written based on the ones of those series.

hi i just wanted to pop into your asks because it'll take me a while to rb and get all of my thoughts out about the posts of yours that i read (and also i want to reread them) but I just wanted to say that I love how (from what I've seen of your works) you have such a good grasp of characters and their mannerisms/thoughts/feelings like- it's actually so impressive. I dont want to clog your inbox so I'll just focus on the aventurine hcs you wrote- he means a lot to me as a character and it feels like a lot of people miss the mark when it comes to him (I'm admittedly also very particular about him because I'm so invested in him as a person) (not to overexplain but it's not like thats a super bad thing he's just very convoluted and it happens so it makes sense that people sometimes mischaracterize him) but your headcanons fit him SO WELL i was kicking my feet and everything. Stuff like this is always so nice that I don’t know what to do with myself. It feels nice to have my efforts validated, because I really really really do try to be as accurate as possible to the character — even when the ask or the situation might make them be a little ooc.

With Aventurine, I took so much care because he is a character that means a lot to me. It took me a long long time of writing to get his headcanons done, and I’m still not satisfied with his but perfection is impossible.

To put it into perspective, my headcanons (ALL OF THEM) are written over a period of multiple days with multiple drafts, rewrites, and edits before I am totally satisfied. Other fics that I get out in a short period of time STILL take me multiple hours and rereads and edits before I put them out. I really do care, very very deeply about what I write.

Even with characters I’m not a fan of (like Malleus from twst, for example) I really try hard to do right. Because while he might not be my favorite, he IS someone’s and that should be enough for me to care. Putting my biases aside to write from canon is so important, and without shaming other authors (because they’re so incredibly talented too), I wish I saw that more in fanfic too.

That’s why I take so much time and care and dedicate so much to my work, because I care a lot. I’m always so happy when that care comes through and people see and feel it.

While I don’t get every ask done (because the volume of asks I have is impossible), the ones I do I make sure that they’re good, because they deserve to be.

Ooh you’re gonna love this it’s a alternate first meeting and it takes place 2 years pre canon, where Tommy and Buck meet at a book signing of their favorite author. Also the sticky note mentioned in the title is plot relevant I just don’t wanna spoil why

Here’s a snippet (unfortunately I haven’t written Buck and Tommy actually talking to eachother yet 😂) (cause you know why I have too many plot bunnies)

Tommy had been reading Chasing Starlight by Savino C. Zambrano in the bunkroom for a good chunk of his shift after getting his usual tasks done, to make up for the fact he couldn’t go to the signing event for the latest installment that was being held today. Sure he could have asked for the day off weeks ago but he’s pretty sure Captain Gerrad would have laughed in his face and deny the time off if he had, he’s pretty sure the only books his captain had read were the textbooks at his time in academy if the old man’s ability to be obtuse and a asshole were anything to go by.

The novel was the first book in the series and if he had his way he would have had the 4th book today, but for now he’ll be content to reread the book that got him into Sci-Fi in the first place, with the cracked spine and age worn, tea and coffee stained pages that are threatening to fall out. He had finally gotten to his favorite scene where the sweet but jaded bounty hunter turned hermit finally admits to the optimistic hero of the series that he sees him as a friend, when the alarm bell started to blare throughout the firehouse. He tries not to groan but he can’t help it he hates getting interrupted even though its work. He goes to hide his copy underneath the mattress of the bottom bunk that he had unintentionally claimed as his during A shift, so long ago.

Its not like he’s ashamed of his favorite series or his love for reading but he would rather not have to deal with the less than kind ribbing the team tends to do being aimed at him if they find out that he likes reading what could be seen as softer but dramatic character driven books, but its also not like he’s any better than them if him not stepping in to help Hen or Chim when they had been the targets was a sign, he’s gotten used to laying low at best and humoring the team at worst. There’s a reason Eli would rather keep to himself or take Chim under his wing when he had worked at the firehouse.

He tries not to look too interested when he hears Captain Gerrad rattle out the address for Lavender Sprig Bookstore where the signing event was taking place, he would think the universe was trying to mock him or something if it hadn’t been for the fact that Gerrad had stated that the emergency was that a bookshelf had collapsed on top of a group of civilians, hopefully it wasn’t as bad as it sounded.

When they arrive they’re greeted by a bookseller who’s hiding her worry surprisingly well for someone’s shop dealing with a pretty sizable event telling by the line at the signing table they passed that he tried not to eye to long, regular flow of customers, on top of possible several medical emergencies. “A Good Samaritan seemed to have the bookshelf handled, he’s been holding it up and when others tired to move the injured from under the shelf he told them not to and to wait until the proper medical professionals have it handled” the bookseller, Mara said as they weaved through bookshelves and people which explained why she was more calm than frantic which isn’t a reaction that’s seen very often on the job.

“Sounds like a dumb kid trying to play firefighter who’s just going to be more of a hindrance” Captain Gerrad grumbled out as they finally got to the collapsed shelves.

“More like he’s just trying to help and he clearly has look around you” he hears hen snip back as she and Chim brush past the crew. Tommy does give a quick courtesy glance at that and notices that despite how close this area of the bookstore is to the signing, the front of the store and registers it’s clearly deserted instead of being filled with the typical nosy bystanders.

He hears captain Gerrad angrily retort “Kinard, De Luca secure the shelves and make sure that kid is out of the way” he gives Gerard a nod in response as he says to Sal “you take the left side I’ll take the right” Sal gives him a thumbs up as he hands Sal the other cord to secure the shelf. As they follow Hen and chim, Tommy taps on the stranger’s shoulder to get his attention since he was clearly crouched in a way that was easier to bare the weight of the bookcase as one person instead of what should be two at minimum which was made harder since the stranger was also being careful to not be in the way of the injured civilians

Death note vol 4 3/5- honestly struggling since L got offed. Like I still like it but the main dynamic I was interested in got burst and everything has been off from there. However, still overall enjoying the series and interested to see how stuff go down

The language of thorns - 5/5 grims fairy tale  perfect fun times. Upon reflection I think my particular favorites were kujo, gingerbread witch, and ulla.

Illuminae- this was more of a book that belongs in an art museum than in my house. Got it for dirt cheap at a library book sale at some booktubers recommendations (idr if it was positive or not, I think it was just different and I was excited for that). And it was very different (it's told through case reports, DMs, some diary entries, so not typical story format, however everything is still informal so it's not constant space jargon) and really refreshing wouldn't reread again, do want to try similar format. I apparently don't typically read a lot of sci-fi (still working through the Amish one) so good to have something diff.

Lockwood and Co the screaming staircase 2.5/5. I didn't want to give things this rating but as much as I loved all the worldbuilding the characters being so dumb really annoyed the hell out of me, even giving allowances due to age - if they have been professionally working with ghosts extermination I feel like a lot of things should've been avoided. Debating whether I continue reading the series or not bc on the one hand I want more ghostly worldbuilding stuffs on the other hand I don't care to read more with those protagonists.

Rebecca of sunnybrook farm (reread) 2.5/5. I wanted Anne of green gables vibes but didn't bring my copy with me so I chose this on kindle cuz free and this was AOGG you have in ur fridge when ur mom says you have AOGG at home. In some ways it literally was the same vibes which is what I wanted but overall characters were less compelling and seemingly had no life outside of Rebecca which I found distressingly annoying. Also everytime I read this I find the relationship arc between Adam Ladd and Rebecca to be extremely...eh(?/bad) bc I couldn't tell if author wants ppl to ship them together romantically or not. Either way def a product of its time, not my personal choice anymore AOGG supremacy.

So, I recently found your blog and the Cod mages and monsters fic, and first of all, it's one of the best pieces of shit (with love) I've ever read. Seriously, I had to reread each chapter 3 times cuz my dumb ass didn't understand anything because the writings were almost poetic, but that's good, I like to enjoy a chapter again and at the same time understand it better than the last time.

The other thing is that it reminded me a lot of another CoD fic called "Dead man walking" by Night_rain_luv1 in AO3, which if you don't know it, is basically the same plot (without all that monster stuff), bad guy reader is captured by TF141 and forced to join them, although the MC is an original character and not the reader, it is still very good.

Both have a majestic writing that I don't mind rereading 15 more times, although I'm in doubt as to whether that fic will continue to be updated because it has been abandoned since last year and only has 5 chapters.

I'm sorry if you don't like your masterpieces being compared to others, I was just excited to know that my favorite CoD fic isn't the only one with such beauty, and now both of them are my favorite fics because choosing between them is like choosing between my mom and my dad.

The Troop by Nick Cutter

I read this a YEAR ago and I still think about it OFTEN. This is definitely my favorite book by Nick Cutter. I read his other books too but they don't compare to this one. It's incredibly creepy, unsettling, and HIGHLY disturbing. As much as it absolutely had me cringing out of my skin, I couldn't put it down. Fans of body horror should check this one out for real - body horror galore! For better or worse, this book is sticking with me for a long time!

Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica

This is another one I read a year ago and I still think about it often as well. The worst part about this book is how I could actually SEE it happening. It's... not for the faint of heart. The author's writing style is really great, though, because she never goes into heavy detail about things, which is both good and bad because it lets your own imagination fill in the gaps. This is truly truly a disturbing read and the way the female "heads" are treated will haunt me for a very long time. The way ALL the heads are treated is horrific, but for me it's the women especially.

Whalefall by Daniel Kraus

This book was so incredibly gritty and real. Fast paced, claustrophobic, terrifying, and it got its hooks in me quick. It was also super emotional in a few parts and had me crying real tears at least once. I still think about "beaky" and how devastated the main character was about it. The ending has stuck with me, as well as all the growth the main character went through during his incredibly traumatic event.

The Only One Left by Riley Sager

So far this has been my first and only Riley Sager book, but I plan on changing that! This book was WILD. The twists and turns never ever stopped and it had me experiencing whiplash until the very last page. Honestly I'd LOVE to see this adapted into a movie. I think it would be so so great to see on the big screen. It, surprisingly, had a happy ending and it left me feeling a little empty and complete at the same time.

Favorite (dark) romance:

Lights Out by Navessa Allen

This one definitely isn't a romance book for grandma - unless grandma is into some freaky shit. The fact that this was one of my fave reads of the year probably says a lot about me but WHATEVER LOL. It even gave me a book hangover for a couple days. I see a lot of people say it's dumb and cringy but idc because I loooveveved it!

Favorite series:

Crowns of Nyaxia

Oraya and Raihn MY LOVES. This series had everything I could ever want and I'm definitely gonna give it a reread sometime this year. Enemies to lovers, grumpy sunshine, angst, pain, a relationship that evolves organically and not forced or cheesy like some other romance stories can spin it. On top of that it has WONDERFUL complex characters and relationships - agh! The world building, lore, everything. Such a fan of this duology and author!

Top favorite of the whole year:

Black River Orchard by Chuck Wendig

First, this was probably the best spooky read I could have done for October. Second, holy HECK. The way this author was able to create such a wide cast of diverse characters is insane! Each character had a unique voice, background story, and motives throughout the whole book. Dang! Anytime I talk about this book I always praise the characters he made because he (and they) deserve it! Objectively I have nothing negative to say about any of them. The story itself was such a unique take on vampires also, and on greed, and on working THROUGH the dark when the dark was at it's worst. Truly one of the best books I've read in a long time. I will be giving this a reread too!

Ducktales meant a ton to me both as a writer and as a person, and I’m honestly still super proud of those stories, even if my writing has matured a lot since I published them. a mean harsh crystal clear little puzzlebox that i swallowed whole. very good at elaborating social structures that are not tangible but are still very very real and meaningful to the characters

i like books that feel like playing a game with the author, and vladdy nabs always makes it clear that HE is the one playing with YOU and he is going to GET you and then he DOES and it RULES

look, i read new releases too! everybody clap for me for liking a book that came out in the 21st century! this was a really hashtag topical, booker prize-y read and i was very very pleasantly surprised by how successfully it pulled that off. made my skin crawl.

looking for a throughline here these books are all about power and constraint and self-justification, and i think also they are all books where the author is entering into a little bit of an adversarial relationship with the reader and trying to keep them off-kilter. i like what i like!!

i posted my review at the time but worth restating that beloved bestselling literary phenom lauren groff is a hack and my enemy. i did this to myself tho this was a hate read just for the joy of hating. i took notes.

read for my book club which is just me and two beloved childhood friends, we are batting like .001 on picking good books that we all like. this book was dumb as hell and thinks it’s quite smart, which is very sad.

another book club book. cant quite put a finger on why this book rubbed me the wrong way bc other book club members liked it and it has the elements of a book id usually love (exuberant prose! a bunch of really wacky characters! unconventional narrators!) but this book has something repulsive at its core actually i think?

I've had my eye on this one for a while as SLM translated it! It was really worth the wait!

Lin Yi has entered the diploma mill Unnatural Engineering University, which has lot of.. Rules. Such as "There is only one gate on campus. If you find multiple gates, stay where you are and contact your advisor. Do not try to walk through the gate." or "The school will only provide hot water from 7:00-21:00. The rest of the time, please keep the tap twisted tightly shut.". Students are advised to follow the rules closely, unless they want to be targetted by the Rules.

Lin Yi enrolled here for a reason. He wants to experience as many Rules as he can.

He has to.

I think its rather hard to write a summary for this novel, as most of the things I want to mention are major spoilers 🫠 I really love and was surprised by this novel, its a really good infinite flow!! Lin Yi is a little weirdo and his chemistry with Qin Zhou is perfect. The author mentions that they're scared easily, and yet the atmosphere of the novel is really eerie. The second to last Rule World is probably my favourite because of the atmosphere!!

Lin Yi is awkward, extremely smart, and a little.. Unnatural. From the beginning, there's something a little off in his actions and train of thought. He has his own little world and aside from his goals, his curiosity really drives him. I wish I could talk more about him, but his identity and why he acts like he does is The major plot point of the novel. Just know that I love him, ok?

Qin Zhou is extroverted, smart, and incredibly capable. As the president of the Student Union, he runs the school and keeps the closest eye on the Rule Monsters. His initital attraction to Lin Yi and how it evolves to his overwhelming love at the end and AND DESPITE IT! [spoilers redacted!] is sooooooo good I loved the bits we saw of Qin Zhou's perspective on things. Lin Yi also worrying over how everyone entering the Rule Worlds with Qin Zhou rely on him too much is also *chef kiss* very good.

I absolutely loved almost every single instance in this novel. While not completely new, each one is presented to you in a compelling way that just makes the reader want more. Lin Yi's thought process and approach to solving the Rule Worlds is always interesting. Each mystery, and the eventual discoveries about the Rule Monsters themselves, felt new because of it! Also I don't think I've gotten this attatched to a Boss monster in an infinite flow (that you aren't supposed to like) since reading Top Horror Novelist. The 4-4 Rule Monster is my favourite 🥺

This novel also has a really good supporting cast! Ou Ying, Cheng Yang, and Ren Li all have their own little things and grow along with Lin Yi. I especially am glad that the author gives Cheng Yang a few times to shine when deducing the main plots of the Rule Worlds in the later levels, its nice to see a 'dumb' character get to the heart of things.

Overall I think you can see I enjoyed the novel... I will definitely reread this sometime in the future! And I'll definitely keep an eye on this author in the future 👍

How was the translation? Okay. SLM has an consistent issue in their translations of which they would definitely benefit by having a dedicated editor going over their uploads before they release it, but it doesn't make the translations unreadable. Typos, some oddly translated phrases, mild grammar mistakes.
