Rest well, Dale Gribble. RIP.
Not lost on me how impactful a voice actor's performance was when their passing makes a breaking news blast. Hardwick was special.

Alright, this is going on the main blog because I hope it brings more attention to a general issue.
So, cheap RWBY bitching issue out of the way: On Oct 7, a Twitter account called 3D Animator Spotlight said the following:
Yesterday former #rwby animator Austin Hardwicke talked about how being assigned a non fight scene shot on the show was taken as a punishment, because with low pay, the clout from a cool fight was needed. And RocciaNobili (JJK, One Piece) confirmed this is not unique to rwby- -Bad pay is emblematic in the industry, East and West. Clout from a cool fight is far more likely then a well animated talk scene going viral. And that plays into the struggles all animators face. We have to improve pay conditions so they dont rely on on viral sakuga to survive
But the tweet in question is this-
When I worked on RWBY, if you assigned an animator to anything except the action scenes, they felt like they were being punished. So many of our talking scenes were much much harder to animate, but received basically no attention on social media, so it felt pointless- -If the salary is low enough that part of the pay is clout, that will keep happening to you as a project manager. Youll get people trying to maximise their clout. Its just good business on their part
And people have been taking the first tweets as proof that the production on RWBY was uniquely fucked, referencing stuff like the visits to Japan as the animation team was out of touch. When in reality, the take away should be as such-
A- Appreciate nuanced animation. They take so much time and effort.
B-RT was not unusual in any case for how they treated their employees. They were just bad at hiding it.
And C- The animation industry needs to PAY their animators.
So...yeah, things tend to be complicated.
... Don't contact anyone I have linked to or referenced indirectly.
P.S. So...remember that 'barbecue PTSD' thing that was floating around, how RT bought them that barbecue while they were being crunched?
If you had to guess off the top of your head what Volume they were talking about, what would be your guess? Volume 4? Volume 5?
No, Volume 3.
Another reminder RWBY was always made off of crunch time...
P.P.S. Uh... this guy also animated the cookie eating scene in Volume 1.
So uh...give him respect for that.

watching austin hardwicke (the animator for yang vs bandits and yang & tai's sparring session) talk about yang's development and how much thought he and kerry put into it to show her growth has reminded me how much i absolutely love yang's development in V4-5.
the lessons tai (and later raven) taught her and how she learned from them, the way it shows in her fighting style after is just *chef's kiss*.

“Cereal Girl” was written by Cheryl Hardwick and Cathi Rosenberg-Turow for season 21 of Sesame Street (1989). The song was a parody of Madonna’s “Material Girl,” performed by the titular Cereal Girl (voiced by Ivy Austin, puppeteered by David Rudman), backed up by her dad (Rick Lyon), her dog (Jim Martin), and a few backup singers (Kevin Clash, Richard Hunt, and some vocals from Cheryl Hardwick).

𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗰𝗸: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗢𝗳 𝗗𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗔 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗱𝘆
Johnny Hardwick was a comedian, voice actor, writer, and producer who was best known for his role as Dale Gribble, the paranoid and eccentric exterminator on the animated sitcom King of the Hill. He voiced the character for the entire 13-season run of the show, from 1997 to 2010, and also worked as a writer, story editor, and producer. He won an Emmy Award in 1999 for outstanding animated program and was nominated twice more.
Johnny was born in Houston, Texas, in 1958. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in journalism and started his career as a stand-up comedian in Dallas and Austin. He was the first comic to appear on The Jon Stewart Show on MTV and was offered a sitcom deal by NBC, but it did not work out. He moved to Los Angeles and performed at The Improv, where he caught the attention of Greg Daniels, who was co-creating King of the Hill with Mike Judge.
Daniels hired Johnny as a writer for the show and also asked him to audition for the role of Dale Gribble, one of Hank Hill's best friends and neighbors. It was said that he based his voice on his father and his uncle, who were both from Texas. He also said he shared some traits with Dale, such as being a conspiracy theorist and a smoker. The animators reportedly drew Dale to look like him as well.
Dale Gribble was a fan-favorite character on King of the Hill, known for his hilarious and absurd theories about aliens, government plots, and his wife's affair with John Redcorn. He also had a passion for pest control and ran his own business called Dale's Dead Bug. He often clashed with Hank Hill, who was more rational and conservative, but they remained loyal friends.
Johnny said he loved working on King of the Hill because he did not have to wear makeup or memorize lines. He also enjoyed collaborating with the other writers and voice actors on the show, such as Kathy Najimy, Stephen Root, Pamela Adlon, and Lauren Tom. He said he felt like he was part of a family.
He continued to voice Dale in other media, such as video games and YouTube videos. He also appeared on reality shows such as Ace of Cakes and Boomer vs Zoomer. He was set to reprise his role in a revival of King of the Hill that was ordered by Hulu in January 2023.
He died at his home in Austin, The cause of his death is still unknown. He was pronounced dead at the scene and no foul play is suspected. His death was confirmed by the Austin medical examiner's office and reported by various news outlets. He is survived by his wife and two children.
Johnny Hardwick will be remembered by his fans and colleagues as a talented and funny person who brought joy to millions of people with his voice and humor. He was also praised for his contributions to King of the Hill, which is widely regarded as one of the best animated shows of all time. His voice gave life to one of the most iconic characters in animation history, and he will be truly missed.
