As long as we're discussing different filmed performances of The Nutcracker, I'd like to mention a very interesting one that I just discovered on YouTube: the Royal Swedish Ballet production.
I would share the link, but it's blocked from being shared on other sites besides YouTube.
It dispenses with the ballet's traditional characters (Marie/Clara, Godfather Drosselmeyer, the Sugar Plum Fairy, etc.), and combines the plot with that of a popular Swedish children's book, Peter and Lotta's Christmas by Elsa Beskow.
As it happens, I grew up with Elsa Beskow's books despite not being Swedish, because my mom discovered them in English translation and fell in love with them when I was in kindergarten. The Peter and Lotta series is about two little orphaned siblings who live with three middle aged sisters, Aunt Green, Aunt Brown, and Aunt Lavender; the other major character is their family friend, Uncle Blue.
In this Nutcracker production, Lotta starts out in the Marie/Clara role while Peter replaces Fritz, but they both go through the magical adventure at night rather than just Lotta. Uncle Blue replaces Drosselmeyer, while the three foster aunts provide comic relief, and the role of the Nutcracker Prince is taken by a friendly charcoal-burner from the Peter and Lotta's Christmas book. During the Act I Christmas party, the charcoal-burner and Uncle Blue's housemaid share obvious romantic feelings, which Peter and Lotta encourage them to act on. Then, in the battle, the maid is the one who saves the day by squashing the Rat King with her broom. Thus she becomes the Nutcracker Prince's lady-love, sheds her plain serving clothes to reveal her true beauty, and becomes the Act II prima ballerina who dances the pas de deux with the Prince.
This staging also incorporates aspects of a traditional Swedish Christmas that obviously aren't seen in most productions. Instead of the traditional soldier, the nutcracker is shaped like the Yule Goat!
I'm not sure anyone who didn't grow up with Elsa Beskow's books would fully appreciate this production, but it is a very interesting one.
It makes me want to come up with my own Nutcracker production concept based on some other children's book series. Madeline, for example: I think a Madeline-themed Nutcracker could be fun...

👨👩👧👦 Alexandre, Clara, Pilirpat
👨👩👧👦 FAMILY WITH MOTHER, FATHER, SON AND DAUGHTER — how many people are in your oc's immediate family? how many people are in your oc's extended family? do they have aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc? who in their family are they closest with? are they close with their birth family, or do they have a found family?
Alexandre
Alexandre's family is himself, his father Pyotr, and his uncle, Theodor. Technically his mother is around, but given who she is....it's not exactly something that he's showing off loudly to random strangers. He is closest to his father, though he has a pretty solid relationship with his uncle.
Clara
Clara is the middle child of Xavier and Isabella Stalhbaum, with her older brother being Louis, and her younger brother being Fritz. She does have a lot of aunts and uncles, though a good chunk of them are close family friends and not biological/through marriage. Of course that means she has a lot of cousins, though there are any girls around her age. She also has her Godfather Drosselmeyer as well, who she's pretty close with.
Pilripat
Now we're getting to the fun stuff hehehe....
So Pilripat is the only daughter of King Siegfried and Queen Odette and the twin to the missing prince, Rowan. Her cousin is Briar and his mother is Cinderella. Odette's other sister and her mother died way before Pilripat's birth, though that extended family is still cordial. Pilripat's not super close to her family, compared to like Clara or Alexandre's, but if I had to pick someone, she's probably closest to her cousin.

I like how for the last two years my city’s production of the Nutcracker hasn’t had enough men auditioning for it so Drosselmeyer was played by a woman, and instead of having her just dress as a man or just in a fancy dress like the rest of the women in the party scene, they ended up making her look like the cool eccentric gay aunt and I’m here for it
#the nutcracker#ballet#drosselmeyer#also for the last three years#the guys playing the nutcracker and the mouse king are married#so me and my mom have been joking that their battle is just a lovers’ spat

@theunforgivenscone and I have what we affectionately refer to as the "NutPan" project. It's a steampunk fantasy Nutcracker + Peter Pan mashup, with some Midsummer Night's Dream mixed in for good measure.
Basically, Peter is the Nutcracker (and the young Fairy Prince of a post-revolution kingdom that despises its old rulers). He has been imprisoned in the body of a steampunk automaton and has only partial memories of his identity. In this state, Peter is known as Puck.
Drosselmeyer was a key player in the revolution that brought down the Fairy monarchy. His misuse of magic backfired and gave him the head of a rat. He has crowned a series of bad decisions by stealing an incredibly powerful magical artifact and essentially freezing time on a small island, shrouded from the rest of the world. Here, he cheats death while he slowly enacts a nefarious plan.
Then there’s young Clara Victoria. She is an orphan, living with her Aunt, Uncle, and young cousin in the New World colonies. Oh, and she can see Death.
Things were already bad before her young cousin disappeared without a trace, from his own bedroom in wintertime. She knows it wasn’t Death—she would have sensed that. It was something else. Something worse.
She is then approached by Puck, who offers to help her rescue her cousin—in exchange for a favor. He wants her to enlist the help of Death to take down Mouse King Drosselmeyer and his undying island “kingdom” of Neverland.
And so the misadventure begins!
Fellow creators with The Nutcracker stories please re blog this and tell me about your versions of the story and characters in it! I want to hear other peoples interpretations and storylines!

#426: “I entered a deep depression when my great-grandmother passed away, I was about 10 at the time. I would watch movies at her house, mainly Barbie in The Nutcracker. As I’ve gotten older (I’m 19 now) I’ve revisited my childhood by rewatching the Barbie movies, starting with Nutcracker. It’s singlehandedly restored my love and excitement for Christmas. I’ve even started to collect Nutcrackers and ballerina ornaments! Thanks, Barbie.”

FANTASTICALLY dumb Princess Tutu plot bunny I just came up with and felt the need to inflict upon the world: the differences between Duck and the anthropomorphized animal characters, as well as the regular animals seen occasionally, are because she’s not actually a duck, she just thinks she is. She’s really a human girl (possibly a princess, bc I think it’d be funny) who was turned into a duck by her older sister/other relative and left in Goldkrone in an effort to protect her from [unspecified political turmoil] when she was like, three. Said relative PLANNED to retrieve her fairly quickly, but [political turmoil] lasted longer than they thought it would, and also Drosselmeyer picked Duck to be his new Princess Tutu when he was ready to start the story up again, so they weren’t able to get back in until after the events of the series.
Meaning, shortly after the epilogue, some random person (in Duck’s and Fakir’s eyes) tries to kidnap/steal what to most people is just Fakir’s pet bird/emotional support animal. Naturally both of them take exception to this, Duck objecting Quite Strongly to being kidnapped and Fakir is like. Actively having flashbacks as he gives chase. So Duck’s sister/cousin/aunt/uncle/whoever throws their hands up (metaphorically) and hits Duck and Fakir with a sleeping spell (literally). The two of them wake up about an hour later with a VERY sheepish person sitting nearby who proceeds to introduce themself. See, they didn’t feel right about just running off with Duck when there was someone clearly emotionally attached to her and they OBVIOUSLY couldn’t take Fakir with them when he’s knocked out, that’s illegal! So they figured they’d just lift the spell while Duck & Fakir were asleep and explain the situation once they woke up. Buuuut they were kind of expecting Duck to still be a toddler. Not a girl in her early teens. In their defense, they deliberately made it so she didn’t age in duck form! That would make things really weird! They weren’t expecting her human self to grow!
So Duck and Fakir wake up, Relative So-and-so explains the whole clusterfuck, and Duck has a choice to make.

We’re getting into the Winter Holiday spirit with Clara!
I’ve had numerous requests for redesigns of the OG Barbie movies & I was so excited to give her a try! Barbie in the Nutcracker was the FIRST animated Barbie movie and.... we watched it a lot growing up. It’s such great fun & very nostalgic for me.
Going historical/timeline with the story... the story the ballet is based on was published in 1812 ‘The Nutcracker & the Mouse King’ and Tchaikovsky’s ballet ‘The Nutcracker’ premiered in 1892. Most variations of the Ballet definitely incorporate Victorian fashion in the opening party scene, but every production has their own variation on the costumes. One of the repeating designs being Clara’s dress with her elbow-puff sleeves and ribbon waist which is very 1890s children’s fashion.
But the Barbie movie character costume designs cements it for me. They take plenty of liberty with Barbie!Clara’s dress in the opening scene but Aunt Drosselmeyer’s gown and the very Victorian Maid are inspired enough that I feel comfortable with setting the story in the 1890s.
Barbie!Clara is much older than Ballet!Clara so I’ve redesigned her in a 1890s evening gown. Still purple but much more pink (the purple was refusing to cooperate).
