Day 24 - ATLA Zuko Fanart

Zuko's dæmon was challenging to choose, but I went with Messenger Hawk. I think they have a noble look about them but can also be cute and a little silly based on what Hawky was like.

I'd love to know what other atla animals would suit Zuko for a dæmon though~

(keika is now haruna! i love that name for her -- i think it suits her better <3 but hi hello, haruna's background story now goes like this:)

Haruna was born to a young Reina on Ember Island. Reina’s pregnancy was a secret, as the young performer wanted no one, not even the young Fire Lord, to know that she was carrying his child. So, Haruna was born in secret. She was raised as a dancer; happy, sweet, and sociable until the age of ten. On her tenth birthday, Haruna and Reina were supposed to host the Fire Lord and his sons. Ryohei and Haruna got along swimmingly, but the little Haruna sensed something evil within Ryuji, which made her fear him. Ryuji, filled with hatred, told his father that he hated the little girl. When Fire Lord Kazuo sat with the weeping Haruna, he saw… himself. She was smaller, darker-skinned, and obviously female, but he saw himself in this little girl. This was it. She was it. 

After a quick paternity test, Haruna was revealed to be the long lost Princess of the Fire Nation. She and Reina were transported to the mainland Fire Nation and given royal statuses. Reina was married to Kazuo, and the tiny dancer, Haruna, was now Princess Haruna.

In a new and unfamiliar world, Haruna was guided to comfort by her older half-brother, Ryohei. Ryuji on the other hand could sense Haruna’s wariness of him. But he could also sense a disturbing amount of strength within the girl. She was hiding something and he was determined to get it out of her.

Shortly after a particularly harsh beating by Ryohei, Haruna found herself hyperventilating. She was burnt, burning, scorched after his vicious attacks. Hunched over the pool in the courtyard, she dipped her hands in the water to try and cool her scalding skin and… the water congealed on her hands. 

No. No, it didn’t congeal. It didn’t feel tacky or sticky -- it felt more like the water was surrounding her hands. Side to side she moved her hands under the water, and she could feel it following in her wake. She felt the water draw closer to her, clinging to her skin. The water encircled her fingers like a glove. Thinking herself foolish, she lifted her hand to see this glove up close. Having been raised on the beach, she’d tried this many times. Her mother, Fire Lady Reina, would laugh about the way her daughter would weep whenever the water would just splash back into the water. How silly that her firebender daughter would want to keep the water in her pocket.

Yet when she raised her hand out of the water, the glove remained. 

It didn’t look much like a glove; the water didn’t exactly contour to her fingers but it followed her upwards all the same. The water defied gravity, forming a consistent ball around her hand. This was unnatural; a firebender being able to command the water at will? No, the girl thought, I’m just hallucinating. Smoke inhalation has never bothered her all that much, but maybe the constant sparring is starting to get to her. She’s starting to hallucinate that she can waterbend. Amused by her hallucination, Haruna wiggles her fingers, trying to will the water to form a circle between both of her hands.

It obeys.

Haruna swallows a scream. Again, she wills the water to encircle her left arm, causing a stream to flow from the tips of her fingers up her arms, around her shoulders, and back down to her right hand.

Again, it obeys. 

The panic begins to rise. It’s fast -- almost too fast for her to catch. She figures that if the water obeyed her before, it will continue to obey her as she wills it back to its resting place. The stream returns to the courtyard pond without so much as a splash. Haruna can’t contain the trembling of her fingers; she slowly rises to her feet and does her best to ignore the way the world sways. She keeps her eyes glued to her hands; her small, trembling hands.

Her small, trembling, healed hands. Haruna doesn’t scream -- but she does crumple to the grass.

i love when avatar fic writers use messenger hawks as basically email, like if you put the recipient’s name on it the bird will know exactly where to go anywhere in the world. like, that isn’t how that works, but it’s much more convenient and very funny
