Alignment chart of dark academia books, emphasis on the academia. I have read them all and this is my take on it all.
Is the novel a dark academia because it takes place in a school and there are a lot of "dark" themes or is it a dark academia because the atmosphere is grim and the characters are pursuing knowledge.
Also book recommendations, I think people would like the books that fall in the same quadrant.
Books under the read more.
Top Left: My favourite corner where I just want the author to flex their niche knowledge.
Piranesi - Susanna Clarke
The Historian - Elizabeth Kostova
If We Were Villains - M. L. Rio
Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Fairies - Heather Fawcett
Ninth House - Leigh Bardugo
The Raven Boys - Maggie Steifvater
The Secret History - Donna Tarte
Babel - R. F. Kuang
Bottom right: The intersection between lots of deaths and some niche knowledge. This one is a bit more hand wavey so here are some explanations.
Blood Over Bright Haven - M. L. Wang: Often compared to Babel but has way less niche knowledge and more transactional deaths.
Harrow the Ninth - Tamsyn Muir: This one is a sequel but the convoluted plot lives in my head rent free and it’s Dark (Goth) Academia.
Bunny - Mona Awad: Lots of allusion to literature and mythology. Also lots of dark, bunnies and swans.
Bottom Left: Takes place in a school that people are trying to survive.
The Magicians - Lev Grossman
Vicious - V. E. Schwab
Legendborn - Tracy Deonn
Ace of Spades - Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
Atlas Six - Olivie Blake
Deadly Education - Naomi Naovik
Top Left: Happens in a school and pretty light on death but has “dark” themes.
The River King - Alice Hoffman
A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder - Holly Jackson
The Initial Insult - Mindy McGinnis
A Study in Drowning - Ava Reid
To Shape a Dragon’s Breath - Moniquill Blackgoose
Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro
You Feel It Just Below the Ribs - Janina Matthewson and Jeffrey Cranor

I firmly believe that the Desert is one of Katara's strongest episodes as a character. But not because it portrays the rest of the Gaang as "worse" than her, eg how people will talk about her having to babysit "a blind girl, her high brother and Aang who is throwing a tantrum" and drag them out of a desert.
No, the Desert is wonderful because it shows us the Katara's unbreakable spirit and her resilient hope.
Tumblr media
It gives us a wonderful look into Katara's psyche while she is under incredible duress. This episode is almost purely shown to us from Katara's perspective, and that was an excellent choice. Katara drives this episode.
We often associate hope with a more delicate, etheral feeling. But here, Katara exhibits a determined, powerful version of hope. A hope that spites a world that seems against her. A hope that Katara creates for herself, and for her companions.
Katara : [Grabs her head in annoyance.] Ugh ... We're getting out of this desert, and we're going to do it together! Aang, get up. Everybody, hold hands. We can do this. We have to.
We see Katara's focus on community, as she prioritises keeping the group together. Katara's more collectivist mindset keeps her focused on what matters to her: the group. Especially when the rest of the Gaang lose hope due to how dire their situation is.
Aang: What's anyone else doing?! [Pointing his staff at Katara.] What are you doing‌?! Katara : Trying to keep everyone together. Let's just get moving. We need to head this direction.
This episode doesn't exactly seek to frame Katara as more competent as the rest of the Gaang. It does something much more important. It shows us how deep her hope goes, how powerful her determination is, how strong her drive is. And that's why I adore it
Tumblr media
Katara's character is strong enough to shine without putting down other characters, guys. It only draws our attention away from her strengths to the percieved flaws of the other characters.

An alignment chart of mainstream kids media and how it deals with magic.
Explanation under the cut.
I have never watched The Owl House, but I have seen the plot synopsis. It’s about a human girl going to magic school.
Sokka from Avatar is the only non-bender in the main cast, and he’s perfectly fine with that. At one point he does get a bit insecure, but while his friends are playing around with rocks and water, he studies the blade. This fixes everything.
Aura is a soul-based magic system introduced in the eighth Pokémon movie. You’re born with it and it basically gives you Jedi ghost warlock powers. Ash is one of three confirmed aura users in the entire show, with one of them being long dead, and he doesn’t give one ninth of a fuck, to the point where he was offered training by the only other living aura user in existence and he politely declined. Good for him.
Luke is a magical guy and he likes magic. That’s about it.

Atlas: Would you like any?
Taryn: It won’t be like last time, right?
Atlas: God no. It’s not bad. Swear.
Taryn: Ok that’s pretty good.
Atlas: See? I don’t know why Kai likes Miller so much.
Taryn: Because he’s an anomaly.
Atlas: PFT- I can see that. Love him to death.
Taryn: You don’t think he seems a bit pissed at you?
Atlas: Honestly, yeah but I haven’t really been the best friend to him. So that’s on me.
Taryn: Hmm.
Atlas: I invited him out. Soonish. Look, things will settle. Eventually.
Taryn: And your sister?
Atlas: I’ll get to that too. Someday.
Taryn: Eventually is such a long time don’t you think?
Atlas: Hey, we were supposed to be talking about you.
Taryn: My bad.
Atlas: So, how are you feeling?
Taryn: Mm… Good I think? I dunno, the shock hasn’t set in.
Atlas: What are you gonna do now?
Taryn: Apply to other libraries. I even printed out my resume right before I left.
Atlas: Bee… Can I still call you that?
Taryn: Only if you tell me why.
Atlas: Oh god, no, it’s embarrassing.
Taryn: Then you can’t call me that.
Atlas: Dammit. I’ll tell you someday, when I work up the nerve.
Taryn: So you’re telling me you could woo the whole planet, but you can’t share this one thing?
Atlas: Bee- FUCK- Taryn, you don’t get it!
Taryn: Okay, whatever you say cassanova.
Atlas: [ snorts ] Alright, tArYn I just think you should try something different.
Taryn: Whaa? I enjoyed what I did.
Atlas: Why not publish your own book?
Taryn: Noooo no no.
Atlas: Well now that you have plenty of time, why not? From what I’ve read so far, it’s pretty good. I’ll even help you proofread.
Taryn: What if I get rejected?
Atlas: Even the greatest writers have faced plenty of criticism. Give yourself a chance.
Taryn: Maybe.
Atlas: Hmph.
Taryn: I’ll think about it.
Atlas: Would you much rather live in regret- Shit.
Taryn: [ laughs ] Whoops!
Atlas: I'm sorry.
Taryn: It's alright.
Atlas: Did I get any on you? I can clean it-
Taryn: I’m okay. Thank you though.
Atlas: Of course. Taryn? You should take the risk.
Taryn: You aren’t gonna let up, are you?
Atlas: Probably not.
Taryn: And I’m the stubborn one?
Atlas: You’re the one that keeps saying no.
Taryn: Fine, I’ll drop some copies off, when I am ready.
Atlas: Fine.

The the real reason we never got a Zuko and Toph field trip is because they knew without a doubt these two would commit a crime so big Nickelodeon wouldn’t be able to pretend murder didn’t happen.

The brain Rot is real, I made a relationship chart to show off Atlas's relationship with the rest of Cognito Inc.
I actually copied the little chibi designs from The Gang jacket from Season 1, and ended up trying to mimic the style to the best of my ability for Rand, JR, and Ron. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!
I've also added a blank one under the read more for any other Inside Job Self Shippers who wants to use this, or show off their own relationships with the gang. Please tag me if you use this I wanna see!!!
