I’ve been thinking about the fact that Katara is the one to reach out for Zuko when he’s falling at the beginning of “The Southern Raiders,” and I’ve already talked about how even though she still hates him at this point, there is a subtle and slowly building trust between them (which actually is what increases Katara’s sense of betrayal, because she knows he’s not the bad guy anymore but he still hurt her deeply). And there’s a number of things you can chalk this scene up to. You can argue that Katara was just in the right place at the right time, she was the one who was closest to Zuko when he was falling so of course it’s natural for her to reach out for him. But it’s also just a part of Katara’s personality that she is a rescuer, that she’ll reach out to help someone in need even if he is her enemy. This is what she does with Zuko in the catacombs beneath Ba Sing Se and when Iroh is hit by Azula’s lightning in “The Chase.” Even though Katara has wells of righteous anger she is also a deeply compassionate person and that’s just who she is.
And one of the things that I really love about Katara is that she gets to be that type of person without letting people walk all over her and take advantage of her. Women and girls are so often expected to be compassionate mother figures and put aside their own feelings and needs for others, and Katara has definitely grown up with the weight of this expectation, but she also struggles against it. Her extension of compassion towards Zuko doesn’t mean she trusts him or won’t hold him accountable for hurting her and the others before, and that makes her forgiveness of him mean more in the end.

Do you know what one of my favorite things about Zuko and Katara in “The Southern Raiders” is?
How instantly they fall into step with one another.
Katara could have told Zuko to just tell her where to find Yon Rha. He could have even said something like “no, I’m going with you because it’s too dangerous” to justify them being alone together (which would have undermined her as a powerful female character, to have a male character she hates declare that he needs to protect her, but it wouldn’t be an unheard-of story beat. One thing I love about zutara is how the narrative respects Katara’s space and agency at every turn.) She could have asked him why she should go anywhere with him or trust him to help her. But that’s not what happens.
The very next scene after Zuko says he’s going to help her find him is her telling Aang she needs to borrow Appa, with Zuko wordlessly behind her (and the shots of Zuko following Katara’s lead while carrying supplies and loading Appa I think is a compelling argument that Zuko would not even need to be told to help out with menial tasks.) There’s no question about who’s making the decisions here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is a sense that Katara is not exactly thrilled by the fact that she needs Zuko for this, I think, as she initially tells Aang that she needs to borrow Appa, not “we,” although she does say “we” when she talks about it next. And actually I think this shows an interesting shift in their relationship dynamic.
Aang: Why? Is it your turn to take a little field trip with Zuko?
Katara: Yes, it is.
Aang: Oh. What’s going on?
Katara: We’re going to find the man who took my mother from me.
This is the last of the Zuko field trips. By this time, the show is self-aware enough to know that their audience has spotted the pattern, so they have Aang make a little meta joke about it. But having Aang make this comment is an interesting choice, especially if the show didn’t want to fuel ship wars, because his mocking comment instantly puts Katara on the defensive against him and aligns her with Zuko. Which is why when Aang asks her what’s going on, she says “we’re” going to find Yon Rha, meaning her and Zuko.
After that, there’s no real tension between Zuko and Katara. They don’t bicker or argue, and he seems completely content to let her take the lead. There were plenty of opportunities for her to make snide comments towards him. When he listened to her story about her mother’s murder and told her that her mother was brave, she could have (and would not have been necessarily wrong to) taken the opportunity to remind him that it was his people who murdered a woman in cold blood, leaving behind her young children to pick up the pieces. She could have reminded him of the reasons her mother was forced to be brave in the first place, and the tragedy that her young daughter was forced to be brave in her place. And it wasn’t so long ago that Zuko himself was leading an attack on the Southern Water Tribe.
Their journey could have very easily followed a pattern of “we hate each other but now we’re forced to work together,” which is an easy way of creating romantic tension especially. Interestingly, Zuko and Sokka’s field trip has more of that kind of thing. Sokka wheedles information out of Zuko with the intention of going alone until Zuko insists on going with him, and the two are standoffish and a bit snappy with each other to start with, then struggle with who is going to come up with the plan and who is going to take the lead. But Zuko and Katara don’t have the same kind of dynamic. They don’t act like enemies who are forced to find a way to act like a team. They act like old friends who’ve been away from each other a long time, but who nonetheless seem to naturally fall into pace with each other. Because they already knew how they would act as a team.
Tumblr media
Because they did have that relationship before, even briefly. But the fact that it was so brief and the fact that they’re so quickly willing to trust each other again even after feelings of intense betrayal gives a sense of how deeply they had bonded with each other in the crystal caves underneath Ba Sing Se.
After that, Katara just needed to know that she could trust him again and not get hurt, or that he wouldn’t hurt the others, but I don’t think there’s a question about whether she wanted to trust him. She just needed to know that that trust wasn’t misplaced. And once she was reassured that trusting Zuko again was the right choice?

Toph is highly emotionally intelligent but a lot of people don’t see it because we tend to associate empathy with femininity and Toph is an unfeminine girl who is unapologetic about who she is and what she wants and a lot of people will look at those types of characters and go “unfeeling murder child.”
I mean, she gives advice to Iroh about his relationship with Zuko, despite never having met zuko and despite Iroh being one of the wisest characters in the series who usually gives advice to others.
She cares deeply about her parents, despite knowing that they don’t understand her, and tries to live up to what they want from her and doesn’t want to worry them. WIth the money she was making in the earth rumble, she actually could have left on her own, but she obviously loves them and even after she runs away, she worries about causing them pain.
She was gutted when she couldn’t save Appa, and Aang accuses her of not caring but that’s clearly not true at all. She holds herself accountable for not being able to save everyone and spent most of that episode blaming herself for him getting taken.
She makes an effort to enjoy the spa day with Katara even though it wasn’t what she wanted to do because Katara is her friend and that was what Katara wanted to do.
She takes a “tough love” approach to teaching Aang earthbending but also tries to build up his confidence and is super excited for him when he finally gets it.

The way that she quickly forms emotional bonds with every single member of the gaang and gives them ridiculous affectionate nicknames.
“Do you really think friendships can last more than one lifetime?”
The way that she is the first one to believe in Zuko’s sincerity and defends him multiple times to the gaang even though he burned her because she knows it was an accident.
The way that she comforts Zuko and reassures him that Iroh still cares about him.
The way that she does rely on Katara as a motherly figure but also reassures Katara that she can still be a kid, too.
The way that she clings to Sokka, the guy who wants to be needed and feels like he needs to be the protector of this group of kids, but also has playful banter with him and can rival him for sarcasm.
The way that she gave up her comfortable life to join a fight that she wasn’t even involved in because other people needed her.
Yes, she can be rude and crude (and often does so on purpose), but she also deeply cares about people and forms strong bonds with every member of the gaang. She also has a deep understanding of other people that goes beyond just being able to detect when they’re lying through earthbending. She is really good at assessing people’s flaws and strengths. She sees no problem with cheating a cheater or pummeling some jerks into the dirt, and ignores stuffy social conventions if she sees no value in them, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have morals and doesn’t care about people.

me at 13: My family and friends can never know the extreme fixations I have. I enjoy this thing the casual amount. No more, no less.
Me at 20: … And thats why Zuko and Katara should have ended up with each other. They perfectly reflected the shows themes of Yin and Yang. Foils yet parallels: Fire and Water. Sun and Moon. Opposite sibling dynamics. Respective royalty of their homelands. Complex relationships regarding their absent mothers. Taking on parental roles in the gaang. They were literally paired together for the final battle of the show because they were complimentary equals. It could have been the perfect execution of the enemies to friends to lovers trope. I mean how do you even ignore the blatant symbolism in the color coding of - Mom? Mom, are you listening to me? They were supposed-

After a hard season, it can be difficult to go back to yourself, back to a routine. And that's okay. You don't have to rush, don't need to have everything figured out. You can start as small as getting enough sleep. Cleaning your room. Taking care of your personal hygiene. A tiny bit of progress is better than no progress at all.
