Time Travel AU: Prologue
Ah, well here goes my first attempt at a fic. Hopefully it's somewhat enjoyable 🙇♀️.
Fuck.
This was not how the day was supposed to go. Adam and his exorcists were supposed to come down from heaven to deliver some holy cleansing, destroy Lucifer’s spawn’s shitty hotel, and remind these losers their place. This was supposed to be a fun day! A stress reliever! Entertainment! But now those same losers surrounded him and his girls as he laid on the ground, golden ichor escaping his body. That fucking midget cyclops - where the hell did she come from?! Lucifer too. Since when did he give a shit about sinners?!
What a shit show. Lute held Adam with her remaining arm, mouthing words that just didn’t seem to fully form in his head. The colour slowly drained from his face, his body felt heavier, and everything seemed to just slowly blur into one image. All he could focus on was Lute’s face, tears freely fell down her cheeks, her body trembling as she desperately clung onto Adam willing him to stay with her. With the last of his strength, Adam gave her a soft smile - one he reserved for those he truly cared about. His ending could be worse, at the very least Lute was there with him until the end.
As much as he hated leaving his girls to their fates, eternal peace was something Adam welcomed. Sure heaven was well… heavenly. While he did enjoy what he did, it was at times stressful, and those higher up angels with sticks up their asses didn’t make it any better.
Finally.
…
…
…
A gentle breeze whistling between the leaves, birds singing in the background, the warm hug of the sunlight on his bare skin as the soft grass cushioned him. This felt familiar. Was this his life flashing before his eyes? Sure, Adam experienced something similar on his first death, but on that one he felt like he was floating, not really in control of anything, like watching a movie of his life. This one…it felt a little too grounded.
“Wake up”.
What the fuck. That sounds too real.
“It’s time to open your eyes”.
Is that..? Nope. I’ll just lay here, it’ll go away soon.
…
“Um…did we make a mistake? Maybe he’s not finished yet”.
“No, he should be complete. The woman woke up just fine”.
A soothing presence inched closer and Adam felt a soft hand caress his cheek, “Come on, you can do it”.
Adam peeked one eye open. What in Father’s holy name. He opened both eyes, blinking several times, even rubbing them just to make sure he was seeing right. Kneeling beside him was Sera, smiling at him with a warmth that he hasn’t felt in years. They were in a circle surrounded by the other seraphim: Gabriel, Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and of course, that snake, Lucifer. Just the sight of him made Adam's blood boil, but he kept his features cool, his body relaxed as he sat up guided by Sera's gentle hands.
“There you are,” Sera smiled as she stood up, brushing off some invisible dirt off her pristine dress. “You are Adam, and this is your new home, the Garden of Eden. You along with your wife, Lilith, will govern these lands gifted to you by your creator, God”. At the mention of her name, Lilith appeared from behind Michael and walked towards Adam, her violet eyes shining with purpose, long blonde hair swaying behind her as she carried herself with an aura of grace and beauty. Adam simply remained seated on the ground, tight lipped, eyes fixed on Lilith's form.
“Aw, he seems to be captivated by the first woman. How adorable,” Raphael whispered to Gabriel, who looked like he’d rather be anywhere else.
As if, this bitch is literally one of the last people I ever want to see.
Sera guided Lilith’s hand unto Adam’s, “Well then, I’ll leave you two to become acquainted with each other”.
And with that, bright light enveloped the seraphim until all that remained in the garden were Adam and Lilith.
As soon as the angels were gone, Adam quickly pulled back his hand away from Lilith. Gross. He slumped back on the soft grass, his right arm covering his eyes, hoping that if he closed his eyes again he'd return to reality.
…
“Adam?”
…
“Is something wrong?”
Yeah, you. Adam sighed heavily. It seemed like this was his waking reality now.
This was not how the day was supposed to go.

I HOPE U GUYS ENJOY THIS PART TWO I GENUINELY LOVE THIS AU SMM
real ones order hot chocolates from cafes
You were stood outside the café, waiting for Wil. He wasn’t late, you were ridiculously early. You felt a little stupid, all dolled up to go to a cafe. You couldn’t help it, you so desperately wanted to impress Wilbur. He had appeared a little early too, a soft smile spreading across his face. You looked so perfect, he thought so anyway.
“It’s freezing, dove, how long have you been here?”
Your stomach twisted, he’d called you ‘dove’ again. You didn’t really know why he was so kind to you. Or why ‘dove’ was making you so flustered.
“y/n?” he spoke again, smirking down at you. A soft laugh left his lips, it was teasing. You didn’t mind.
“Um, not long.” you lie, you lie so clearly.
“Yeah? You’re not a great liar. Come on, let’s go inside.” he responded, pushing the door open. He then led you toward a table in the corner, obviously familiar with the place. Two armchairs, sat across from each other and a small coffee table placed between. It was so pretty. It was so Wilbur. You both sat down, looking at each other and smiling.
“This place is so cute.”
“You think? It’s my friend’s. This is actually where we have our lovejoy meetings.”
“Lovejoy?”
“Oh, that group of artists.”
“Oooh! This seems like a fitting place to meet.”
“Yeah, it was Ash who found it actually, we ended up befriending the owner. Um, if you look over there, the- the library painting. That’s mine. The one next to it, that’s Joe’s.” he said, pointing across the cafe. He turned his head to look back at you every few seconds, he makes a mental note to tell you how gorgeous you look.
“Wow.” you said, completely in awe at the talent that was displayed across the walls.
“Wow indeed.” he wasn’t looking at the paintings, he was staring directly at you. “You look - irresistible, by the way.” he added, eyes never leaving your face once.
You took in a sharp inhale, and almost screamed. He’d used the same words you had described his art with. He thought you were far more beautiful than any painting he could create.
“Thank you.” you mumbled, not meeting his eyes. “You look, very nice, too. Handsome even.” you said, more clearly this time. He brightened up in response, smiling wide. His eyes wrinkled, he looked perfect.
“Thanks, dove.”
You giggled, he laughed.
“Where’s that come from? ‘Dove’?” you asked. You knew that he knew it was completely eating you alive, that your stomach was doing 360s and your face was getting hot. He never once mentioned it. Though, you had a feeling he would soon tease you about your state.
“I hadn’t quite finished the sketch when you saw it. There was a pigeon behind you, but that didn’t feel very romantic. I decided on dove instead.” he explained, he was attempting to stretch out his legs. It ended with him having to push his chair back, you laughed.
“They are both birds.” you said, smiling wide at him. You weren’t going to give him the pleasure of a reaction anymore, or at least you’d try not to.
“Do you want any food?” he asked, turning round to look at the menu. It was scrawled on blackboards above the counter.
“Share a cookie with me?” you offered, looking at him. He nodded, standing up to go and order.
“And what drink?”
“Hot chocolate…?”
“Okay.” he responded, before quickly walking to the counter. You hadn’t noticed how quiet the cafe was before, you were too infatuated with Wilbur. There were a few other people dotted around, most alone reading books with a big mug of coffee. You could imagine Wilbur sitting in here, trying to look for inspiration. It was a very Wil place.
He returned a few moments later after a brief conversation with the barista, he was holding a plate with the cookie on it.
“She insisted on bringing our drinks over herself, got the cookie though.” he said, as he placed down the cookie. He sat down and looked at you, smiling. “I got you something, by the way.” he added, still looking at you.
“Oh? You did? I’m sorry, I didn’t get you anything.” you said, looking a little guilty.
“That’s okay, I didn’t ask you to.” he replied, reaching into his bag. He fumbled around with whatever had been shoved in there before pulling out a piece of paper. He slid the piece of paper across the table, you picked it up with out thinking. Turning over the paper, you were greeted with an incredible drawing. It was you. Your heart was about to burst.
“I’m sorry if it doesn’t look right, when you sent me the picture last night I couldn’t not. I mean it when I say you’re gorgeous.” he said, tapping his leg. He was so nervous, you made him so nervous.
You were awestricken. “It’s perfect, Wil. You’re so talented. Oh my god, how do you do it? You make me look so, so-“
“Captivating?”
“Exactly!”
“It’s because you are, love.”
“No-“
“Yes. You are. You’re so enchanting, the worst part is you don’t even realise it.”
“Your artwork is incredible.”
“Thank you.” he replied, looking over to the woman who was now walking toward you with drinks. You hadn’t noticed yet, you were admiring the paper in your hand. It was a picture you had sent whilst explaining how to use your camera.
“Here’s your drinks. I’m Shelby by the way.” the barista smiled at you, placing down your hot chocolate and Wil’s tea. You finally looked up to the barista, ripping your eyes away from the drawing. You decided you would frame it, it was too pretty not to. The barista was gorgeous; she had a big smile and eye-catching hair.
“Shelb owns the cafe, she’s the reason we have our meetings here.” Wilbur added, looking over to you. You were still in some sort of daze; you just continued to smile at Shelby.
“I’m y/n.” you said, placing Wil’s drawing down on the table. The paper was far away from any drinks because, you would much rather die than damage the artwork.
“Oh, trust me. I know.” Shelby said, her face had morphed into a cocky smirk. You didn’t understand what was going on as Wil’s face gained a pink tinge and Shelb laughed.
“What?” you questioned, convinced they had some inside joke at your expense.
“Nothin-“ Wilbur began before he was quickly shut down by the girl.
“Wil hasn’t shut up about you since you met. It’s been nonstop since yesterday. Wait until you meet Joe, he’ll tell you all about it.” she said, before quickly making her escape. Wilbur did not look happy. You laughed and smiled up at him, finally having some leverage over the man who made you so incredibly flustered.
“Don’t look at me like that.” he said, deadpanning at you. He thought your happiness was cute really.
“Look at you like what?!” you asked, feigning offence and cluelessness.
“You know exactly what you’re doing.” he stated as he moved to pick up his tea. You smirked at him and he raised both his eyebrows, a sign of ‘you’re treading on thin ice’. “So, dove, tell me, are you free tonight?”
He had the upper hand again, you felt as though you were about to melt into the seat. To be honest, you wouldn’t have minded.
“Yes, I am.”
“Come to mine, please? I need a model.”
“A model?”
“Yes. I want to paint you. It’s fine if you don’t want to.”
“No! Nono, I want to. I, just, are you sure you really want me to model?”
“Y/n, you’re sat here, all dolled up. It’s a tiny café, it’d be a waste if you didn’t let me paint you. I never want to forget how gorgeous you look.” Wilbur replied, shrugging his shoulders. Leaning forward, he grabbed his mug of tea and took a few sips. He looked directly at you, so much so you were sure he could see into your soul. You felt completely smothered in adoration, as though he thought you were the prettiest person in the world. He did. You also picked up your drink, trying desperately hard not to get the whipped cream on your face as you took sips.
You ended up saying in the cafe for an hour and a half. You’d argue it was the best hour and a half of your life. Wilbur had paid, and then led you out of the cafe and towards his own flat. He had hold of your hand.
Wilbur. Was. Holding. Your. Hand.
Your whole body felt like it was on fire. Feeling your intertwined fingers sent a tingling sensation across your body, it was incredible. Wilbur was so insensitive, how dare he be so nice to you. So sweet. You felt undeserving of his care, he felt the same way of yours. Two idiots, walking down the street after the best date of their lives. It was so perfect. Undeniably perfect.
Upon arriving at his flat, he dropped your hand to open the door. There was a small look of regret in his eyes, you smiled up at him, it was gone.
“Sorry about any mess.” Wilbur said as he pushed open the door, and flicked on the lights. It was so cozy. Shades of amber, brown and beige swirling together in his living room. You noticed the odd bit of green and yellow.
“Cute.” you said simply, looking over to Wil who was making his way over to a different room. You followed him through to the room, you were met with paper stuck across the walls. Unfinished paintings and drawings, some finished sketches awaiting the artists brush. An easel stood lone in the centre of the room, a canvas ready to be graced with his masters work. A canvas ready to be graced with you.
“It’s actually messy in here, you can sit on that stool.” he laughed lightly after he spoke, stacking up paper as he cleared off the counter tops in the room. He moved the stool towards you, directly in front of the easel. “It might take a few hours, you sure you’re alright with it?” he questioned, head tilted as he looked over to you, pallet in hand.
“Mhmm!” you replied, nodding your head as you took a seat on the stool. You tried to sit as comfortably as possible whilst still looking pretty. Wil laughed and shook his head, walking over to you and repositioning you. He tilted your head, hand delicately cupping the side of your face. His thumb stoking your cheek, an action that probably lasted too long. He dragged himself away, literally, as he decided that you were sat correctly. “Comfortable?” he prompted, moving back to his canvas.
“Yup..!” you could barely muster up a response. He had handled you like porcelain, as if he could break you at any moment. He probably could. You didn’t mind though, you didn’t mind at all. You were sat on the stool, knees pushed together and head facing the corner of his room. You had a view of some of his sketches, you couldn’t believe he hated them.
“Good.” he hummed, beginning the rough sketch of you. You could barely see Wil, but made do with the little flickers of him you could grasp.
After about ten minutes of sketching he picked up his pallet, laying down the colours he needed. “I need to get new paints, they’re down to their last life.” he said, squeezing the near empty tube. You laughed, attempting to keep as still as possible. “I’ll let you know when you don’t have to be like a statue. It shouldn’t be too long, just as soon as I get the colours blocked out.” he added, content with your hum as a response.
Your eyes moved around as you watched him paint, the brush stroked elegantly against the canvas. He looked breathtaking. His hand was steady and his eyes were narrow, pure concentration. Every so often, when he looked up to you, his reference, your eyes would meet. He’d give you a smile and continue his work. Biting down on his lip, he moved slowly and carefully. He moved with the same care he had shown you before.
After three hours of precise actions and small conversations, he was finished. He took a few steps back, checking the artwork matched his gorgeous muse. He smiled. “We’re done, dove.” he said, looking over to you. He said it as though it were a joint effort, you knew he had done all the hard work really. You moved your head and smiled at him, obviously tired. His eyes flicked around your face, he tilted his head trying to read your emotions.
“I’m hungry. But, let me see!!” you replied, you had almost forgotten what the past three hours had been spent doing. You’d zoned out whilst watching Wilbur work, off in a land of daydreams. Day dreams that definitely weren’t about him.
“We can get food.” he replied, before turning round the easel. Truthfully, he was scared you’d hate it. That you’d insult him, and his work. You didn’t. You would never. You were at a loss for words, completely taken aback by how astounding the painting was.
“Oh, Wilbur.” you began, looking up at him. You admired both him and the art work, how had you been so lucky. “It’s incredible. Words can’t describe how perfect it is - how perfect you are.” you continued, standing up and looking more closely at the canvas.
“Really?” he said, smiling down at you. He’d moved round the easel to stand next to you, he didn’t look at his artwork, only at you.
“Really! Oh, look at it Wil. So pretty.” you replied, a wide smile plastered over your face.
“So pretty.” he repeated, his eyes not leaving you once. “y/n, I’d really like to keep seeing you. Um, can we go out again, maybe like Saturday?” he swallowed after speaking, once again you had made him nervous.
“I’d really like to keep seeing you too. I should be free on Friday, what would you like to do?” you were in disbelief. Someone genuinely liked you, and that someone was Wilbur. Wilbur liked you. You turned to face him, your smile not faltering once.
“We’ve got an exhibition on, I’d love it if you came. They tend to be quite boring.”
“So I’ll get to see more of your work?”
“Of course. I won’t be selling this, by the way. Would you mind if I kept it?”
“I wouldn’t mind at all.”
Wilbur continued to look down at you, something different in his eyes. You couldn’t pin point what he was feeling, furrowing your eyebrows in confusion. A knock at the door interrupted the moment, he frowned and mumbled something. You didn’t hear what he had said, simply following him through to his living room. “You can sit down.” he offered, walking toward the door and opening it. He was met with the faces of a few of his friends, Joe having been the one who knocked at the door.
“Hi Wi-“ Joe started.
“It’s 8pm, what do you want Joe?” Wilbur questioned, not opening his door fully. You were just out of view, not that he was hiding you. It was just, selfishly, Wilbur wanted to keep you to himself for as long as possible. You’d meet them at the exhibition, you didn’t need to meet them now.
You laughed, Wilbur smiled. His mouth quickly returned to a straight line as he looked down at his friends.
“Well, we were going to ask if you wanted to go to the pub with us. But, clearly you’ve got company already.” Joe’s tone sounded teasing. You could practically hear the smirk on his face, Wil shook his head.
“Yeah, I have company. Thanks for asking though.” he replied, his voice flat. Shelby must’ve told his friends that you two had left together, that was the conclusion he had coke to. “Okay, bye everyone.” he added, going to close his door.
“When will we meet them?!” Mark protested, you didn’t know their names yet, but you could hear the different voices.
“Bye.” Wilbur repeated, and closed the door on them. He shook his head once more as he moved to the lounge and collapsed on the couch next to you. He smiled at you, you laughed.
“That was mean.” you stated, turning your body to face him.
“I think they’ll recover.” he replied, shrugging his shoulders.
“Still mean.”
“You still hungry?”
“Yeah.”
“You want takeaway?”
“Sure why not, do you want money?”
“Nono, it’s my treat, dove.”

What Is The Fantasy In A Name?
⚜️ Caretaker Pyn & Gardener ******* ⚜️ 1434 words ⚜️ A/n: The Gardener uses he/it pronouns. It is used for ease of reading between characters. We stay silly with absolutely no beta reading.
There is barely a bird in the trees to the back of the mansion. An ouroboros is in the midst of its duties as a gardener. The water from the hose sprays far into the flowers. Under its breath, the snake hums as it works. Quiet steps come up behind it.
“Hello, little morsel.”
The caretaker only replies with a quiet hum. He squats down next to the snake. Pyn watches the small water droplets run off the bells of the foxgloves in front of him. There is a light dread that hangs in his heart.
“Is there something wrong?”
“Nothing wrong. I have something to say.”
“Yet, you only speak when prompted.”
“I’m just a little worried. Would you get angry at me?”
“Is this a concern or a request?”
Pyn’s nose scrunches. He turns to look at the snake. It is looking at him as if this was a normal question to ask.
“Why would I even request that?”
“How am I to know? There is a whimsy to some of your asks. Either way, I would likely prefer to not have anger towards you.”
Pyn lets out a huff.
The sound of spraying water slowly fades away. The tap is closed with the turn of its tail. It places the hose down on the ground as it lowers its body. If to picture, it looks like it would be sitting on its haunches if it were in its fully humanoid form. It places its hands on its lap.
“What is it that you would like to say, Nep? I promise that I will not get angry.”
Is it insulting or is it comforting that the creature next to him is treating him like a child? Pyn cannot seem to tell. It is a weird crossing of signals in his mind when he tries to think about it. There are much more pressing things right now than that weird feeling.
The caretaker considers the words. He thinks back to what the fallen angel had said. Is it enough to just be by his side? He is inadequate enough as a caretaker. Is it sufficient to be the creator and nothing else?
Quietly, almost under his breath, Pyn finally says, “I would like it if you were a true muse.”
“Fascinating.”
The weird turning feeling in his stomach churns at the one word. Was Malaikar wrong? The angel has rarely been wrong since his canon.
“That would be quite interesting. I believe I would like that actually.”
The brows furrow first and then begins the thinking. Pyn tilts his head. It is not a rejection. It is quite the opposite. It is the answer he is hoping for but his thoughts flip once again.
“Are you sure?”
“Why would I not be?”
“It means…Your story…”
“It would not be finished. Yes, I gathered as much considering how much of it there is in the first place.”
Pyn ignores the light jab. “You're not angry about that? I thought that you'd maybe… I thought you'd be a little angry about it never being completed.”
“Did you really want me to be?” A soft chuckle escapes its lips as the caretaker gives him a very quick shake of his head. “I do not care. I have never cared about your progress with regards to my WIP. I have nothing harboured towards it in the first place. You worry too much that I may turn like Feathers. I do not. I will not.”
“Why don't you?”
“You understand that he and I are very different, yes? Both of us might say the exact opposite of each other. We actually are, the more you think about it.”
“You're telling me I've been overthinking you getting angry at me.”
“When have you not, little morsel?”
Pyn scrunches his nose with a pout. Maybe Malaikar was right. Pyn does hate it when Malaikar is right. At least, the angel isn't here to gloat about it in a sense. A small shiver runs down his spine before he shakes the image out of his mind.
“Is there a name you’d like?”
It hums loudly. A finger pushes up against its jaw in a fake pondering pose. Pyn rolls his eyes at this.
After few seconds, it finally answers. “I am not sure. Do you want to choose one for me?”
“It’s your name though.”
“I know. I trust you. I am not really smart enough to think of a name.”
Pyn throws his arms up in disbelief. “Do I just create liars in this house? Sir, you created a fucking cult around you. A very, very devoted one at that. You want to have me believe that you’re not smart enough to think of a name for yourself?”
“Maybe I just prefer a name from you, Nep.”
A different kind of twist flips the fox's stomach. When and how did this creation become such an adoring character for him? It did not start out this way. Pyn tries to push the confusion out of his mind. Better not dwell on it too much, however...
“Maybe Laik is right. You need to stop doting on me in this way.”
“Do you hate it?”
“Possibly. I do think it’s a bit too much. No wait. It is too much.”
The snake chuckles. “I will reduce my affections then.”
“Affections my foot. It's an uncomfortable kind of worship.”
“Alright, alright. I get it. I will take you off the pedestal. However, I do prefer that my name be chosen by you. You gave me much already so please, if it happens to be the last thing that I may ask of you, choose one for me.”
“It's because I've made so much of you that I want you to be able to choose this for yourself.”
“And my choice is to be named by you.”
The caretaker stares at it with a squint. The gardener only stares back. The lightest of sighs leaves Pyn's lungs.
“You're not letting this go, are you?”
“Not at all.” It smiles, fangs peeking from its lips. “I am sure that Feathers chose a name for himself, did he not?”
“He did…”
“That is because he has a fantasy of himself that I do not. There is a self that he knows, beginning, middle and end, so a name may complete that fantasy of his. It makes him feel whole, maybe even real. I do not have such a desire for that kind of fantasy.”
“Then what do you desire?”
“You know what I am. I have hunger, not desire. Being here is already enough for me. I am watched. I am fed. My hunger never fades and yet, I am satisfied with the way it is.”
“But your story–”
“Does not have to exist for me to, does it?”
“Not particularly.”
“And that is alright with me. If there is a version of me that exists even without a name, that is alright with me. As long as I remain here in the clutter of your mind, I do not mind what or who I am. A name holds no fantasy to me. Nothing harboured, nothing lost. I only stand to gain from you.”
Pyn allows himself to lean back and fall onto the grass. His head meets thick muscle. Its snake body is at the perfect distance from him to serve as a pillow. It is a little funny that for a creature its length and size, whatever movement its lower body makes is silent against the grass. When did it begin curling around him anyway?
The caretaker watches the sky move above him. The snake remains seated beside him quietly.
His mind swirls with letters. Names are ridiculously easy for the caretaker. There are always a few hovering in his mind. One by one, they line up. Choosing one on his own always seemed to be much more annoying than letting the muse take most of the reigns. He grumbles a little.
“Fine, how about this? I just randomly say names that I have in mind and you stop me when you hear one that you think you'd like.”
“Would that not be me choosing a name for myself then.” A silly little smirk crawls onto its face.
“I'm trying here. I have a lot of names just hanging around. Picking one out of the lot of them is not really my forte. You people tend to be the first to voice and opinion.”
“Alright then. How about we narrow it down to a pool of five and then we choose one together?”
“Deal.”

MASTERLIST | 1K MASTERLIST
NOTE: Gotta love some good, ol’ fashioned BAU meddling, am I right? 😂 I took the prompt and made it just a little different, but I hope it’s still okay! Hopefully the overall vibe is still what you imagined 🥰
***
Everyone was watching them. Truthfully, it was a wonder they hadn't noticed by now, but that was most likely to be expected from two people who were obviously in love with each other and still hadn't done anything about it yet.
Three years now. That's how long it had been since Y/N joined the team, and from the first day, she and Spencer were glued at the hip. She was the only one who actively listened to and laughed at his long, obscure jokes, and as their friendship blossomed, he stared following her around like a lovesick puppy. It was sickly-sweet, truth be told.
And the longer it went on, the longer they danced around the inevitable, the more fed-up the BAU got.
Currently, Spencer and Y/N were reading a book together. Like, they were actually reading together, sitting side by side while they took turns reading aloud. They did it every day when they came into work, and when they finished one book, the other person would pick the next one.
"I want to say it's annoying, but it's actually kind of sweet," JJ pointed out, peering through the blinds in Hotch's office, where they all gathered to spy on their friends.
"Yeah, but they've been doing it for almost two years," Emily stated. "You'd think that by now they'd have at least kissed..."
"Maybe they have and they just... haven't said anything?"
Penelope piped in this time, shaking her head. "No, Y/N would have told me, she tells me everything. And I mean everything."
"Well, what about Reid? Has he said anything to you?" JJ asked, turning to Derek.
He sighed. "No. But you know how he is, if he could avoid telling me anything at all about his love life, he would. And he has."
"Well, maybe you should say something to him," Emily suggested.
"You know he'll just shut me down and deny it."
"Then Garcia should do it."
She thought about it for a second before turning to Derek. "I am excellent at getting information out of people."
Suddenly the door opened, and everyone turned around to see Hotch entering his office, stopping for a second to take them all in before closing the door behind him.
"Sir, we can explain—" Penelope started.
Hotch held up a hand and made his way to his desk. "You're spying on them, aren't you?"
A quiet chorus of mumbled 'yes' and 'yes, sir's sounded through the room before he actually sat down with the most miniscule of smiles.
"I'd say to make sure you all leave one at a time so they don't catch on, but something tells me they wouldn't notice anyway."
***
A few hours later, the team made their way to the jet in little groups.
Firstly, Penelope pulled Spencer away into her office for a 'special meeting' that he was only slightly concerned about. But when she finally closed the door, he found it was nothing like what he expected to hear.
The first words out of her mouth were, "When are you going to tell her?"
"I'm... I'm sorry?"
Her face scrunched as she pointed a finger at him. "Don't play dumb with me, 187, I may not be a profiler, but I know love when I see it. You and Y/N are perfect for each other, and you guys are literally driving us mad with the sexual tension."
"I—Garcia, we're just friends, I... I don't..."
"Look, you've got a plane to catch, so I'm not gonna keep you any longer, but everyone can see it, Reid. You two? You're practically soulmates."
He really didn't know what to say after that. So he wordlessly turned and made his way to the jet alone, thinking the entire way there about what Penelope had said.
Soulmates? Love? Sexual tension?
Of course he'd always thought Y/N was pretty. And there wasn't a doubt in his mind that she was the one person on the team he knew he could come to when he had something he was excited to share, because she was always down to hear him talk. And... he never really realized it until now, but it always warmed the deepest parts of his soul when he saw how her eyes lit up at the chance to hear him talk—to just listen to what he had to say.
He thought back to every time they read together, how her leg always brushed against his and how it always seemed to comfort him. How her voice when she read aloud always seemed to put him in a trance, like a lullaby. She was his warm place, his safety net...
But... that was totally normal for friendships, right? More often than not, platonic friendships carried that warm familiarity that also came with romantic ones. It wasn't uncommon.
Still, it set off an explosion of fireworks in Spencer's stomach to just think about sitting next to her on the jet.
Meanwhile, everyone else was there, going through some files on the case when Emily sat down in front of Y/N and cleared her throat.
"What's up?" Y/N asked politely with a small smile.
"Nothing, it just... I saw you and, uh... Dr. Reid looked pretty comfy this morning."
Her eyes widened. "Oh, uh... Were we reading too loud? We've been trying to keep it quieter because we figured it was a bit unconventional—"
"No, no," Emily laughed, thinking to herself how absolutely perfect they were for each other. "I mean... You were really close... Like maybe you're... into him."
"O—oh... Well, I—I don't... Um..."
With another laugh, Emily reached her hand out to reassure her. "I'm not trying to put you on the spot, Y/N, it's just that we've all... noticed how close you guys have gotten over the years and it looked like maybe you two..."
"Oh! Oh, no, uh... We—we're not together or anything, I... He's my best friend. That's all."
By the redness that colored Y/N's cheeks, Emily wasn't buying it one bit. Yet, she indulged her, nodding and patting the little table in front of her before getting up to move to a different section. "If you say so."
She walked away, leaving Y/N with a newfound... tension within her that she couldn't really shake. And it only amplified when Spencer walked onto the jet and took his usual seat next to her.
They greeted each other with small waves, but something felt off. And when his hand brushed up against her leg on accident, she felt a light buzz course through her veins, like some type of switch had been flipped.
It's only because of what Emily said, Y/N thought. She just got in my head, that's all this is.
But the longer the day went on, after landing in Idaho and setting up at the precinct, the buzz only amplified. Every time he said her name, she felt it kick up, and likewise, whenever she said his, he felt the thrum of his chest get heavier.
Everyone could tell, too, though they seemed rather amused by it all. While Y/N and Spencer were out at the ME's office, Emily, JJ, and Derek sat at the table in their temporary office and talked it over.
"I actually feel kinda bad," JJ said. "I mean... It seems like they're just being awkward around each other now..."
"That's not a bad thing... It just means they're finally starting to come to their senses," Emily countered with a wave of her hand. "They'll be fine."
Derek scoffed with a smile. "Yeah, I give it 'til the end of the case. Without work to distract themselves from each other, there's no way they won't say something."
Sure enough, the topics of conversation walked through the door just then, immediately putting distance between themselves on opposite sides of the table. And before anyone could say anything else, Spencer jumped the gun, going into detail on what they discovered about the case.
***
"We won't be heading home until tomorrow morning, so I booked us all rooms at the hotel on main street. I'll give you your keys when we get there. Good work, everyone, get some rest."
Hotch disappeared into the night, leaving the rest of the team to pack up a few things in their office before following him.
Y/N chatted happily with JJ, but deep inside she was nervous. Because everyone had been acting strange all day, pairing her and Spencer up every chance they got, and it was impossible to miss all the fake 'I wasn't looking at you guys' stares into space that they all constantly adorned.
Not to mention the fact that ever since Emily even brought it up to her, Spencer also seemed nervous around her. Their whole dynamic had been thrown off, and now she could barely look at him without immediately looking away and wondering what it would be like to kiss him. Now that the thought has been planted in her head, it's all she can think about, and it's very distracting. And knowing how... interested her friends seem to be in her predicament, the biggest fear she has at the moment is that she and Spencer will be rooming together.
As they got into separate cars and headed to the hotel, she fiddled with her thumbs, picking at the chipped nail polish and hoping that she'll get to rest easy.
And as Hotch handed out room keys in the lobby, she felt her heartbeat pick up, Emily and JJ sharing a key and Derek walking off with his own.
And then he said the one thing she was afraid of, and it almost froze her completely.
"I was only able to get two rooms with double beds, so you guys will have to share, if that's alright."
At that point Y/N would have rather shared a bed with Rossi, because that would have been less awkward. But she and Spencer both nodded, he took the key, and they both silently made their way to the room, keeping their heads low.
Even as they finally stepped into the room the air felt fragile, like one wrong move could break it and send them into space, where there wasn't enough breathable oxygen to keep them alive. And much like in the office today, they kept their distance on opposite sides of the room, separated by the bed.
It was Spencer who broke the silence first.
"I can take the floor if you want..."
The small, sweet way he said it almost made her heart shatter. "O—oh no, you don't have to. That would be silly."
"Are you sure? Because I can—"
"No, it's okay, really. I don't mind."
They stared at each other for what seemed like forever, before Y/N's phone buzzed in her pocket, and she turned around to answer the call.
As she walked into the bathroom, answering, "Hi, Mom," before shutting the door, Spencer let out a long breath and rubbed his eyes, wondering how he was going to get through the night. He also wondered if Penelope had talked to Y/N as well, because this awkwardness they were experiencing was most certainly double-sided. And if that was the case, did that mean... she was in love with him, too? Firstly, was he even sure he was in love with her in the first place?
Maybe a little, he decided, thinking back to practically every single moment they've ever spent together. And as he quickly changed into pajamas and situated himself in bed, he thought about what it would be like to kiss her. Is that something he would want to do? Could he see himself kissing her over and over again for the rest of his life?
He had his answer when she walked out of the bathroom, wearing shorts and a tank top, her hair out of its ponytail and cascading down her shoulders as she plopped her phone down on the chair in the corner of the room and walked to the bed.
He tried to look away, but he couldn't. And he was thankful in a way for this newfound uneasy air between them, because she refused to look at him, and it gave him all the clearance he needed to follow her trail around the room.
But when she finally settled into bed, and as he felt her weight dip beside him, Spencer looked down at his lap. He was afraid the close proximity would give him away.
She cracked open a book and read in silence for a few seconds before she turned to him. "Did... Is this distracting? I can stop and we can just go to sleep if you're tired..."
"Oh, n—no, it's not distracting. You're fine. I was, um... I was going to grab a book of my own anyway."
He swung his leg over to get out of bed, but Y/N stopped him. "Well, um... I, uh... I know we're already in the middle of a different book, but if you wanted to, we could, um... read this one together? I—I think you'd like it, it's about the—"
"Sure. I—I'd um... I'd like that. Whatever it's about, I'm sure I'll like it. Y—you know, since you said it was good. You have good taste, so I t—trust your judgement."
He was just rambling now, and hearing Y/N laugh a little, he internally berated himself for letting it get awkward again.
Nevertheless, she opened up the covers to get underneath, and slowly scooted closer to him. Once their knees touched, they both jumped a little, but Spencer cleared his throat and Y/N busied herself by trying to find the first page, neither of them commenting on the obvious shock of butterflies that shot through both of their insides at the tiniest contact.
"Do you mind if I start?" she asked softly, turning her head slightly to the side so she could see him. He nodded, giving her the go ahead, and she turned to the page, focusing on the words in front of her.
Unsurprisingly, it was easy for them to get into a familiar groove. They took turns reading each few pages, and stopped in between to discuss things they'd read. It also wasn't surprising to find that they gradually got closer, their arms and legs now completely touching side by side and their faces dangerously close as they leaned down to read.
Spencer had just finished reading a chapter, reaching out to turn the page, and Y/N seemed to have the same thought, because her hand collided with his in a way that left no room for subtlety, or drawback to avoid that it even happened. Their pinkies interlocked, and Y/N found herself entranced by the curves and peaks of his hand. How each of his fingers slightly twitched at the contact, and how prominent the veins in his forearm were.
Her heartbeat picked up, and his did, too, as he focused on how tightly her pinkie was curling around his own, desperate not to let go.
"Y/N," he whispered. It wasn't a question, nor a warning, but it rolled off his tongue softly as if it was the sweetest word he'd ever had the pleasure to say. It was just one little word, her first name, conveyed with such adoration and obvious pining that he was afraid he'd scared her away.
But she held his pinkie tight, the book resting open beneath them on their adjoined knees, and then looked over at him.
And her eyes held the same weight as her name on his lips.
It was unclear of who moved first, but it happened so fast that surely it didn't matter. In a flash, their lips were joining in soft desperation, and rather than locking pinkies, Y/N shifted her hand to weave all their fingers together. The squeeze he gave her hand made her sigh against his mouth, and it was all the most relieving thing in the world.
After she pulled away, he chased her face for a second, not wanting it to end. But his eyes flew open and when he saw her staring back at him, her lips slightly puffed and her eyes almost hungry, he knew he didn't have to worry about the moment ending any time soon.
The book was long forgotten right then, tossed across the room somewhere as their clothes soon followed.
***
"So, how do you think the love birds got along last night?" Emily asked to no one in particular as the group gathered in the lobby.
Derek snickered. "If they came to their senses, I'm sure they got along just fine."
Everyone laughed at that, just as said love birds made their way to the lobby.
"Sleep well?" JJ asked, obviously trying not to smirk.
"Mhm," they both mumbled in response.
They were going to leave it alone, but that's when Rossi showed up, peering over in Spencer's direction. Then he pointed briefly to his neck. "You got a little something there, genius."
Everyone clapped excitedly, Emily letting out a low whistle and Derek rounding it off with a loud and proud, "Atta boy!"
The redness on both Y/N and Spencer's faces didn't clear up the entire way home.
And after the text that Emily sent out to Penelope, it was looking like it might get even worse.
***
"Welcome home, my beautiful family! Come on, I have something special for everyone in the round-table room."
Penelope led the way, Y/N and Spencer bringing up the rear.
"I'm sorry about this morning," she whispered. "I really didn't even notice I'd made a mark, I—"
"It's okay," he reassured her. "I... I guess they kinda knew we'd get to that point eventually anyway."
"Yeah... I just wish it wouldn't have happened so soon, you know? We're never gonna live this down."
She wasn't expecting him to lace his fingers with hers, and the action made her smile.
They'd fallen a bit behind, so when they finally caught up to everyone in the room, it was terrifying to see them all with knowing, mischievous smiles. And before Y/N could explain, Spencer started speaking.
"Okay, okay, yes. Y/N and I... finally... got together last night. But you can't make it weird, and I'm not going to let you make it weird, because—"
"Ohh, it's a little late for that, boy wonder," Garcia said, giggly and holding out a cake box.
Spencer and Y/N looked at each other briefly before taking a look, immediately gasping and going red.
It was a small cake, shaped like a heart with a red trim of frosting around it. And right in the middle, in pretty red cursive, were the words, "We finally had sex!"
"Penelope!" Y/N whined and shoved her face into Spencer's chest, the heat radiating off her face like a space heater on high blast.
The howling laughter that erupted from everyone else in the room was something neither of them would forget.
But even through the curtain of embarrassment, Y/N and Spencer both knew that beyond it awaited a very promising relationship, especially with friends who supported them. Even if that support manifested in rather... enthusiastic ways.
And, despite the initial embarrassment of it all, the cake tasted pretty damn good.

Our new beginning. Kagemaru
Key: thoughts, narration, speech
The heroine and Oboro bought dango and return to hideout the Senkitai.
Oboro grinning at MC mischievously:
"But are you sure I'm the one you should've asked to go with you?"
МC: What do you mean?
Oboro: Wouldn't you preferred, say... Kagemaru? He is kind of your boyfriend.
(Is that how the rest of the Senkitai see us?)
МС: Mmm, how should I put it?
If I'm completely honest, my relationship with Kagemaru is still a bit of a mystery to me.
(Somehow we've kissed, but we've never outright admitted how we feel about each other. I just can't tell what that guy is thinking.)
MC: See, he's not exactly my boyfriend…
Oboro: Huh? But Kagemaru himself said you guys are dating.
МС: That was just a tactic to ensure I'd be able to come and go around here without any questions being asked. I mean, there are still Ayakashi who can't stand human coming and going as they please.
Oboro: You sure about that? You really sure?
Oboro pouts, looking dissatisfied.
Oboro: I think you really caught Kagemaru's eye, MC.
MC: What?
Oboro: He's the kind of guy who knows what he wants. If he didn't actually like you, he wouldn't call you 'his girl' even for the sake of a lie.
(You think?)
A feeling of warmth blossoms within my chest.
Oboro: You're a great catch, Airi. You should be more confident in yourself.
Oboro declares, his gaze moving toward my hair: Oh yeah, that ribbon you're wearing is different from the one you usually wear.
MC: Oh, uh. Yeah, I bought it a little while ago.
Oboro: It's really pretty. Now Kagemaru's bound to fall in love with you all over again, huh?
MC: Th-That's not why I bought it!
Half-amused, half-frustrated by Oboro's comments, the two of us arrive at the Senkitai's hideout. We head underground and Oboro begins to lead me toward his room. Along the way, we run into a familiar face.
Oboro: Oh, Kagemaru.
Kagemaru: ......
My eyes meet his and for a second he looks startled.
Kagemaru: "Back again, are ya?"
(Same old, same old. )
Oboro: Huh? Kagemaru! What kind of way to speak to your girlfriend is that? Look, she came all the way over here just to see you---
Mc: A-And that's enough outta you, Oboro! Shall we be on our way?
Hiding my disappointment, I urge Oboro along.
Kagemaru: Oi.
To my shock, Kagemaru grabs my shoulder and pulls me closer to him.
MC: Um?
Kagemaru: .......
We're mere inches apart, his hand reaching toward my cheeks.
(What's going on? In the middle of a hallway? Really?)
His hand brushes past my cheeks and continues to reach for my ribbon, undoing it with a rustle.
Kagemaru: What're ya wearin' somethin' as scruffy as this for?
MC: Come again?
Kagemaru: Yer supposed to be the boss' girl 'round these parts. If yer comin' to see me, ya can at least dress the part.
(What's wrong with my ribbon? Meanie ).
Embarrassed at mistaking his gesture for even a second, I blush red.
Kagemaru: Guess ya don't give me much of a choice. I'll go get---
MC: .......
Filled with a rage I can't quite understand, I push him away as hard as I can.
Kagemaru: !
MC: Sorry, Oboro. I'm going home.
Oboro: W-Wait!
I ignore Oboro's pleas for me to stay and head straight back outside again, leaving them both behind me.
•••••••Flashback•••••••
Several days later.
(Oh, that hairpin is beautiful!)
During a shopping trip in Asakusa, a hairpin on display in front of a store catches my eye.
(It's really stunning. There's something special about it.)
I instinctively draw closer for a better look, the display having caught my full attention.
(They're so pretty and sophisticated. No way anyone would ever call them scruffy.)
•••••Flashback•••••
Kagemaru: Yer supposed to be the boss' girl 'round these parts. If yer comin' to see me, ya can at least dress the part.
•••••End Flashback•••••
(Looks like what he said about me is still on my mind.)
A mixture of frustration and anger welling up inside of me, I bite my lip.
Man: ......
I sense someone approaching my side - out of the corner of my eye it appears to be a man wearing a cap.
Man: ......
(Wait!)
He snatches one of the hairpins and quickly scarpers.
(A thief?!)
Mc: W-Wait!
Bewildered by what I just witnessed, I go to chase after him.
Man: Hey, you're in my way!
Man: !?
A woman adorned in a kimono grabs him by the arm, twisting it.
Man: That hurts!
Yuzuru: My, what a gorgeous hairpin.
Catching a glimpse of the hairpin the man is clinging onto, Yuzuru beams.
Yuzuru: And yet it seems so wasted on a scruffy old pickpocket like you.
Passersby take note of the scene and come to a halt, raising their protests.
Onlooker 1: Hey!
Onlooker 2: You get'em, Ma'am!
(She's so cool!)
Not long afterward, the thief is taken in by the police and dragged away.
Hairpin Shopkeeper: Thanks a million, Yuzuru. That guy's a thief who's been stealing what he can from around here lately. I don't know how many times he's targeted my shop.
Yuzuru: As if I could stand the thought of such a gorgeous hairpin in the hands of a slimy creep like that.
Yuzuru goes to hand back the hairpin, but the shopkeeper shakes her head: No, I want you to have it. Consider it my thanks.
Yuzuru: My! You sure about that?
Hairpin Shopkeeper: It's the least I can offer! Considering what you just did for me.
Yuzuru: …Very well. Don't mind if I do.
Yuzuru thanks the shopkeeper, then turns toward me with a smile on her face.
Yuzuru: .....
Several moments later, I'm leaving the shop with Yuzuru - or rather, Kagemaru dressed as his alter ego.
MC: Um, are you heading to work?
Yuzuru: Oh, not today. I'm in town to pick up a little rouge for my lips.
(She's a million miles away from Kagemaru!)
(Also, I didn't realize she was still entertaining people as a geisha.)
I'm so shocked by the transformation that I'm practically lost for words.
Bar Goer 1: Hey, you two pretty ladies over there!
Two men call out to us from a nearby stall, raising their drinks at us.
MC: Um. Yuzuru…
Bar Goer 1: Whoa, you two really are something.
Bar Goer 2: What do you say we buy you a drink?
With that, Yuzuru suddenly grabs my arm.
Yuzuru: Read the room, boys.
She pulls me up against her, making sure the two men get a bird's eye view of the situation.
(Whoa!)
Bar Goer 2: Wait! What?
Yuzuru: Can't you tell? We're having plenty of fun just the two of us. And we don't need any men around to interfere.
Bar Goer 1: ...Huh?
Yuzuru: Shall we?
Yuzuru and I pass by the bewildered men, still arm in arm.
(When I first laid eyes on Yuzuru, I was struck by how beautiful she was.)
I can feel my heart start to thump as we walk along together, still pressed right up against one another.
(Yuzuru's the perfect definition of a girl crush. She's so cool and gorgeous you can't help but fall for her!)
(I mean, I know she's really Kagemaru on the inside, but still!)
(I can't even tell if it's Yuzuru or Kagemaru making my heart flutter this much anymore.)
(But I like it.)
(I hope we can stay like this for a bit longer.)
Yuzuru: Sorry about that, Miss.
When the two men are no longer in sight, Yuzuru finally goes to let go of me.
MC: Wait, um!
I keep my arm wrapped around hers and squeeze, not letting her do so.
MС: There's somewhere I'd like to go with you!
I job a finger toward the same Japanese sweets parlor that Oboro and I visited the other day.
Yuzuru: Hah?
Yuzuru: Why'd ya want me to---
For a second, Kagemaru slips back into his usual self, but, conscious of passersby, quickly clams up.
MC: You don't have work today, right? So you can spend some time with me!
I take Yuzuru's hand and start to lead her into the sweets parlor.
We take a seat and I excitedly pour over the menu.
Yuzuru: .....
Yuzuru: …Someone looks like they're having a good time.
(Ah. She might be mad.)
MC: Well, it's not every day a chance like this comes along...
Yuzuru: …I suppose.
At first, there's a slight hint of irritation in Kagemaru's eyes.
Shopkeeper: Here you go!
Yuzuru: Thanks, doll.
Yuzuru aims a dazzling smile at the shopkeeper as they deliver our sweets.
(Yuzuru really is stunning.)
(Boy, girl, it doesn't even matter. That kind of beauty is ethereal.)
I spend an afternoon captivated by Yuzuru's beauty while enjoying the delicious sweets.
By the time we leave the shop, it's already evening.
MC: I had a really great time today. Thanks for humoring me.
Yuzuru: Oi.
I say my thanks, about to leave when Yuzuru grabs me by the arm.
MC: Huh?
Yuzuru: Ya made me go along with that act for long enough. Ya think I'm jus' gonna let ya wander off home by yerself?
(Huh?!)
Yuzuru starts pulling me along surprisingly in the direction of my own house.
(Is she walking me home? Is that it?)
I look up at her from my side and she stops in her tracks. I feel a rustle as she fixes my hairstyle.
MC: What is it?
Yuzuru: Turn around.
I do as I'm told, my back toward her, when I feel her undoing my hair ribbon and running her fingers through my hair.
I feel a rustle as she fixes my hairstyle. She finishes off by adorning my new look with the hairpin she received earlier as thanks.
MC: Oh wow! Thank you so much!
Yuzuru: So ya don't complain when it's Yuzuru, do ya?
I hear the faint click of a tongue and something soft brush my neck. In my shock I turn around.
MC: Um?!
Yuzuru: Ah well. Might work out for the best.
(Was that a kiss just now? And that smile…)
Yuzuru: Yer beloved Yuzuru will have ya trained in no time.
Yuzuru: She'll make ya into exactly the kinda woman fit for the head of the Senkitai.
MC: Train me?
Without giving me a chance to refuse, Yuzuru's face comes closer, her lips against my ear.
Yuzuru: I'll show you how to make the most of your feminine charm.
MC: !
Her voice is so alluring and seductive that I'm already shivering in anticipation.
(I can't let my guard down around Yuzuru anymore than I can Kagemaru…)
I tell myself as heat gathers in my cheeks from how intimately close she's standing…
Afterword:
1. The heroine's pansexuality is proven.
I want to note that MС used the pronoun "she" in relation to Yuzuru, although she knows that this is Kagemaru's alter ego. It's great that a girl accepts her partner as he/she is.
2. It's great that we decided to show Yuzuru. Now I am interested in the attitude of the heroine's father to Yuzuru/Kagemaru.
3. Oboro is the best family psychologist. When a 12-year-old child is better versed in relationships than adults. I think it's time for this boy to start a psychological practice.
4. A little criticism.
The relationship between the heroine and Kagemaru at the very beginning of the story was a little annoying.
I understand that the heroine is 15 years old, that in these years the girl wants romance and showing feelings.
Therefore, there were such phrases and such thoughts:
"(Is that how the rest of the Senkitai see us?) Mc: See, he's not exactly my boyfriend… That was just a tactic to ensure I'd be able to come and go around here without any questions being asked".
The girl doesn't understand that not everyone can or wants to flaunt their feelings.
It is clear that Kagemaru wanted to help, but it looked so toxic. In the role of Yuzuru, Kagemaru is more affectionate and understanding. He could learn from his alter ego how to communicate with young girl. 😄
Yuzuru showed herself better as a partner than Kage.
I hope that in the next sonnet/event, the couple will understand how to communicate with each other.

Pranks, Horns, and Tony
Warning: Tickle Fic, birds, spiders, pranking,
Ppl: Loki, Tony, You
Words: 2254
Summary: You and Loki are known fir your pranks, and your both left alone in the compound together whole the avengers are on a mission.
--------
It was another day in the compound, you had been living with the avengers for almost a year now and seemed to get along with the very mischievous God Loki.
You were both quite young- well sorta. If he were a human he'd be a couple years older than you but that's fine, you both got along splendidly.
You would read books together, play pranks together, be on each others sides and he'd always be there for you even if he wouldn't show the other avengers. Though they all knew you both had a special bond, Thor especially knew because whenever he'd take you to asgard or Loki to Earth you'd both have bright smiles and go somewhere to cause havoc.
Thor didn't really mind though, it just meant he'd get to bombard you both with tickles afterwards.
Yesterday Loki and Thor had come to visit again and would be staying for a couple of days. You and Loki caught up a little and read your books whilst keeping each other company. Today is when the true mischief would start, all the avengers would be going out and you and Loki would be left alone in the compound for a couple of hours so you both were planning pranks for the others.
"Alright y/n, we'll be back in a couple of hours. Don't burn down the house while we're gone okay?" Steve teased as he gave you a hug.
"Yes, and Brother, do not cause any havoc." Thor told Loki, only to be answered by a shrug and a smirk.
"Brother I'm the God of Mischief, what more must you expect?"
"Well then when we come back I'll be the God of Tickles, shall I, dear brother?" Thor asked, wiggling his eyebrows. Loki's face became a rosie red and crossed his arms whilst rolling his eyes.
You stood next to Loki and smiled at Thor with your hands behind your back, "we'll be good, have fun!" Thor nodded and all the Avengers left the compound for their mission.
Both you and Loki waited for there to be a silence that rang through the compound once everyone would have been gone. After a moment you both smirked and turned to one another.
You brought your hand to your face and showed Loki your intertwined fingers to show your face promise, Loki's smirk increased as he saw it.
"Ready to cause some mischief?" You asked him.
"It's in the name" he replied as you both began to run down the halls yo your first target.
You arrived at Bucky's room and looked around, "So, what's the plan here?" You asked the mischief maker himself. Loki walked around the somewhat messy room and found his way to the bed.
"A magnet, a large one. We'd place it under his bed and once he comes back and gets ready to sleep, in the morning he wouldn't be able to get out of bed!" Loki exclaimed, both of you began the process, both with large smirks on your faces.
Loki used his magic to lift up the mattress and keep it in the air whilst you both grabbed a large magnet from Tony's spare parts and placed it under the mattress bed. Loki then placed the mattress back on and the sheets were already messed to so he surely wouldn't notice?
Yeah, I don't know why Tony had a large ass magnet either, let's move on.
You and Loki both snickers at the idea of the prank and moved on to another victim.
For Sam you both collected a bunch of birds and locked them in his closet- with breathing holes obviously. One had pecked at Loki's hand causing him to curse which made you burst out laughing.
Steve's closet was now filled with a bunch of Rock concert shirts and IronMan shorts to pin the blame on Tony, Tony usually was in prank and tickle ears with Steve anyway so it wasn't that hard to believe he'd done it.
You both didn't dare do anything too crazy to Black Widow, so you both just stole a jacket each. She had incredible taste that woman. Loki stole a green jacket with some sort of fluffy collar and you stole a (f/c) leather jacket.
Clint's prank was the simplest, you both sprayed this fart spray into the vents and it STANK.
You both liked Bruce, well Loki wasn't as much of a fan but you all enjoyed reading so Bruce was safe from your havoc.
Wanda's room was all tidy, it smelt wonderful and honestly was your favourite room so you both decided to just put some spices in her bed to make her sneeze.
Vision's room was safe, only you'd both left a piece of gum next to his table with a note attached saying; 'Try this, Bruce and I were working on it. -Tony Stark'
Thor's room was one of the messier one, but he'd taken Stormbreaker out with him rather than Mjölnir, and by some sort of mirical you had all found out you could actually lift the weapon, so you took it and hid it away in a close vent that smelt of farts.
Turns out Clints prank was the most deadly as the whole place started to stink up making both you and Loki gag, and burst out with laughter.
Peter wasnt actually on the mission, nor was Scott but it was a Friday meaning they'd both be coming over for movie night. Plus Peter would be staying the weekend so why not torture him? Even if they were some of your best friends, they werent safe from the mischief makers.
You came up with the idea of hiding spiderman Peter's room, you were terrified of them though so you made Loki do so.
"Wait so Parker's afraid of Spiders?"
"Yeah, I don't really get it either-"
"Pffft, here you want a spidey y/n?" Loki chuckles whilst taunting, shoving a spider in your face as you screamed and jumped into the wall.
"LOKI PISS OFF!"
Loki howled with laughter and placed the last spider down. You both left and did the same with Scott's room but rather than spiders you placed all the ants you could find on his bed.
Last but not least Loki lead you to Tony's Lab where he would be working on all his suits and other personal projects. Its not the main lab but it wasnt too far off, just smaller and more personal so that he could work at night or alone.
You both entered while snickering to yourselves, it had been an hour and a half since they'd all left and you both should gave at LEAST 30 minutes. But hoped you'd have an hour. It wouldn't take long anyway.
"So what's the plan?" You asked Loki.
You both saw an IronMan head on his desk and smirked at one another, knowing that would be your target. Maybe jello inside the helmet? Maybe slime? Maybe hiding it? Repainting it?
"Here, I've got these horns that we can lazer on the front" Loki smirked while taking out two golden horns like his own on his head but separated to be put on a helmet.
You didn't really mind it was a mainly Loki thing, it just meant he'd get in trouble and not you for this. You werent per say throwing him under the bus, but you werent gonna bring it to his attention.
You both walked over to get ready to melt a horn on each, Loki grabbed some sort of tool and started the first one. You stood behind him and watched over his shoulder, you admired the small things,about how Loki's greesy hear was tired up into a man bun before he'd started working on it, and how he squinted one eye to concentrate with his tongue sticking out. It made you giggle.
"I'm almost done..." you watched as he'd almost finished it, both of you concentrating hard on the hand ship.
"Oh hey kiddo's"
You both jumped out of your skin, Loki fell off the chair and part of his hair came out, laying on the floor he turned to see who was talking, you on the other hand jumped and slowly turned around with a nervous smile.
The one and only Tony Stark stepped out of his suit, adjusting his watch as he stepped out.
"So, what are you both up to?" he asked, his lips scrunched inwards and his hands on his hips.
Both of you were silent until Loki began getting up and dusting himself off.
"Nothing, we were just about to leave" You noticed something about him, Loki that is. Something seemed different, and rightly so. You glanced behind you to see the real loki grab the helmet but sink down so he couldn't be seen.
"Oh good, I really cant have you both in here, off you go then."
Tony dismissed the two of you and you both left for ths door, and while he wasnt looking Loki diverged into his clone again but now holding the helmet.
Right before the two of you had reached the door, his suit came speeding past and covered the exit.
'Shit' was the only thing you could both think of. Neither of you turned around to see where or what the billionaire was doing, but you heard him.
"Wait a moment, wheres my helmet? Oh and Loki,I think you left something" Loki and you both turned around, Loki with his hands behind his back,obviously hiding something. Tony stood right in front of him,holding the other horn to his face with a wide smirk.
Quickly the suit begins you both snatched up the helmet and yourself as Tony pounced on the God of Mischief, his hands at his sides, wiggling his fingers all over.
Loki yelped and began lightly chuckling at the fingers that were tickling him, trying to step back but only into closed doors. He tried to use his hands to block the attack but Tony was having none of it.
"Sir I have the helmet and y/n, it seems they were moulding the horns onto it." Friday explained.
"Ohhh, so you were doing something? I thought you were the god of mischief? Not the God of lies?" Tony taunted, as he squeezed the puny gods sides, then quickly moved to a death spot, his hips. Squeezing tightly and vibrating his hands and fingertips causing Loku to fall down the wall with laughter.
"NoHoho!!!! Damn it StArarK!!!!" Loki yelled as he tried to force Tony's hands off him. Though he was incredibly weak from the torturous tickles.
It was a usual sight, Thor was usually tickling his younger brother for some reason or another, its what older brothers are fir though right? Loku would become a blushing screaming mess but he'd never learn. Same goes for you though, everyone in the compound knew your little weakness and would use it against toy for anything. Your laughter was just too cute!
As Tony abused Loki's sides and hips, he ordered Friday to put the helmet on the desk and tickle you. You squealed because as much as you enjoyed tickling, you couldn't never stand it when the robots tickled you. It was rare but in cases when Tony needed an extra set of hands, well he got em'.
The suit held you up and began using a vibrating simulation Tony had recently installed on the hands for some reason and placed them on your ribs whilst holding you in the air. And as this tickled you, because it did t seem like enough the suit also used it's big fingersto scrape and squeezed the insides of your armpits.
You kicked and squealed at the top of your lungs, trying to escape. Somehow being held in the air seemed much worse, and the vibrating cause you to laugh harder and harder when random electric bolts went through your skin.
After around 15 minutes Tony had both you and Loki in piles of laughter on the floor, weak and begging. Well you were begging, Loki was threatening.
"LEHEHET OFFFF! HAHAHHH IHIGIM GONNA KIHIHILL YOU!"
"Okie Doki horny. First let me do this and I'll let you go."
Tony lifted up Loki's lime green shirt and blew the largest raspberry right above his belly button. An inhuman screech came from Loki as he curled in on himself and howled with laughter from ghostly tickles and squeezes.
"As for you" Tony taunted as he walked over to you, you were not on the floor, twisting and turning to get away from this oncoming attack and the tickles. The suit held your hands above your head as Tony brought up your shirt to reveal your belly button.
"PLEHEASE DONT TOHONY!"
Tony looked up at you and smirked, "We all know you love it" and blew right on your belly button. Your laughter went silent and you melted into the floor as both let off.
Tony laughed at you both in giggly messes on the floor.
"I came back early, and the others will be back soon too. So I suggest you both go clean up your messes before you get something worse" Tony suggested as he walked over to his desk to suspect the iron helmet you'd worked on. You and Loki had now recovered- partly- from the attacks and took in what he said.
But it was too late, everyone heard birds chirping and Sam screaming.
"WHERE ARE THEY?!"

first hero (one shot)
AN: Snippets of Draco as a father, and one as a grandfather. :)
Before Scorpius was born, Draco had no experience with babies or small children. He was raised an only child, and had no knowledge of what to do. His own father was never one for comforting hugs or piggy back rides or teaching him how to properly play Quidditch without falling off his broom. He wasn't a terrible father, but he was definitely not a doting one.
He would do better. Draco vowed the second he discovered Astoria was expecting, that he would. He would do everything he could for this child. Resting his hand to her ever growing bump, whispering 'I love yous' and soft French lullabies.
"Is that-?" Draco uttered, eyes sparkling with wonder.
She laughed. "A little kick, yes."
"Does it hurt?"
"No, silly. Like a baby bird fluttering about."
Astoria's health was declining. Her body was already weakening from her curse and the pregnancy seemed to exhaust her further, day by day.
"If I don't see them grow," She whispered one night, caressing his cheek. "Please watch out for them, Draco. Promise me, you will."
His heart ached at her painfully true words. "I don't want to make that promise. Maybe there's some hope...some positivity?"
"It's the truth." She shrugged. "I can't change that, Draco. You know it, even if you won't say. Promise me?"
"...I promise."
Their son was born just a few days before Christmas. He had been intended to be born after the New Year, but his early arrival was welcomed nevertheless.
"He's...so tiny." Draco whispered, staring at the swaddled infant laying against his mother's chest. He didn't dare touch the blond fuzz, like dandelion fluff on their little one's head. He was so premature, so fragile.
"Hello Scorpius," Astoria murmured, exhausted and blotchy from childbirth, but still had a twinkle in her eyes. The tiny boy yawned, nestling closer to her. "Would you like to hold him?"
Draco nodded firmly, though he was positively terrified of dropping the boy. Astoria placed him gently in his arms, and he melted as the infant squirmed and squeaked.
"Hello, little fellow." He said, careful not to shift too much. "I'm your papa, Scorpius. Scorpius..." He thought for a moment. "Have we decided on a middle name?"
Astoria shook her head. "Are you sure you don't want to do Lucius?"
"Positive." He said, watching as their son's eyes fluttered open. They were bright and blue, like his mother's. Then, it dawned on him. "Hyperion."
"Like my father?"
Draco sat beside her, kissing Scorpius' head, then Astoria's rosy cheeks. "A man worthy of his name being carried on by our boy."
"Scorpius Hyperion," She repeated, smiling. "I like it."
~•~
Scorpius proved to be a shy, but precocious child, always fascinated in anything and everything. Though he had little contact with any other children his own age, he was best friends with his parents, and even occasionally visited his maternal cousins- though by visiting really he sat in the corner, staring at a picture book instead of interacting with them. He was quiet, remarkably quiet with his cousins.
Not that they didn't encourage him to talk to them.
"How about you join them, Scorpius?" Astoria asked, laying on the picnic blanket beside her husband and son. Her nieces, Constance and Cordelia were loudly playing gobstones while Daphne supervised them. "Gobstones is fun, I'm sure they'll teach you."
Scorpius simply shook his head, pointing at his book.
"Alright." She kissed his head fondly. "What would you like to do pumpkin?"
"Braid your hair, mummy." He whispered, giggling.
"My hair's already braided, silly. But...daddy's isn't." She smirked.
"Yeah!' Scorpius chirped, popping his thumb out of his mouth. "Flowers too?"
"Ooh that's a brilliant idea!"
Draco raised an eyebrow. "What are you suggesting?"
"Your hair is so long and pretty. Perfect for braiding." Astoria said, eyes crinkling as she laughed.
So Draco stood as still as he possibly could as his son and wife braided daisies and other flowers in his platinum hair, all while holding back chuckles as Scorpius stumbled around looking for various flowers to put in his hair.
"No, no Scorpius' that's a weed-" He started, but Scorpius didn't hear him, and continued braiding, singing a made up song to himself as he worked.
~•~
"Dad?" Scorpius asked one afternoon, while Draco was brooding by the fireplace. Astoria was resting upstairs after a particularly bad morning of sickness.
"Yes, son?"
"I um," He stared at his shoes, growing anxious. "I finished all the books in mum's library."
"Reading them?" Draco asked, puzzled, though not surprised. Though he was only nine, he devoured books like sweets. Instead of playing, he would read in a cushy armchair, reading books bigger than his head. Fantasy books, muggle literature, textbooks, non fiction, spell books- anything he could get his hands on. He especially loved ones with facts.
"Almost all of them." He corrected softly. "There's the ones you have locked up."
"Ah." Draco hummed. "You wouldn't be interested in that...it's all very grim. They're all about the War."
"Please, can I?" Scorpius begged. "I barely know anything about that and I'm so curious."
"How about we read it together? There are some things you need to know that ...you won't be happy to hear."
They read the old book together, and Scorpius was silent the entire time. When they finished a chapter about the list of Death Eaters, he looked distraught.
"I'm sorry, son." He murmured, but Scorpius didn't answer. Instead, he curled up beside his dad.
"Do you still have it?" He asked finally. "The mark?"
"...Yes."
"So we were evil?" The question was so innocent, but it still hurt.
"It's ...complicated. This mark serves as a constant reminder of my wrongdoings. With your mother's help, I became a better man. At least, I think so."
Scorpius dimpled. "You are." He yawned sleepily, resting his head on Draco. "I love you."
"I love you too, Scorpius."
~•~
"Ready?" Astoria asked, fixing Scorpius' black tie. "Oh, you look so grown up." She cooed.
"Mum!" Scorpius whined. "The train is going to leave soon!"
"I know, I know. One more hug and a kiss?" She asked, and he happily obliged. Thankfully at the age of eleven, he was still young enough to not be embarrassed by hugs. Especially Astoria hugs. She kissed the top of his hair.
"I'll miss you." He whimpered.
"Be good." Draco added, patting his shoulder. "Don't cause too much trouble."
"I won't, dad. I'll miss you too." He said glumly. "Suppose I don't make any friends?"
"You will."
"Don't forget your sweets." Astoria passed the bag to her son. "To help you make friends. Remember?" She winked. "Everyone will want to be your friend if you share."
"Friendly bribery." Draco joked. "But also because of your charming personality."
Scorpius laughed nervously as the train whistled. "I should go then."
"Write to us as soon as you can," Astoria said. "We love you, sweet boy."
"I love you too." He gave them a watery smile. "Bye then." He reluctantly walked towards the train, the trunk already put away so he only had his cat carrier to hold.
Watching him slip away made Astoria's lip quiver.
"He'll be alright, Toria." Draco assured her.
"I hope the other children will be nice." She said. "I don't want his light to dim."
Draco said nothing. It was true, Scorpius was the embodiment of sunshine and love, the idea of putting him with other children who most likely knew of the rumor was not comforting. He had wanted to homeschool Scorpius, but Astoria had insisted he needed to interact with others his age. Sending him to Hogwarts still felt like bringing a unicorn foal to a Chimera den.
"He will be alright." He repeated to himself.
School was harder than they had predicted. Scorpius had made one friend, Albus Potter of all people, who was sorted in Slytherin with him. Still, judging by his letters, he was happy. The other students teased them, but they had each other.
Which was enough.
~•~
It was a grey, cold summer's day. Scorpius curled up by the windowsill, silently watching the raindrops drip down the window. Everything felt bleak and dim. Not even the birds nearby chirped their beautiful songs.
"Be brave, Scorpius." His mum smiled, her strength weakening. "I love you."
"I love you too, mum."
He had held her hand as she passed away into the night.
"Scorpius..." Draco said, voice shaky. "Please let me in."
Scorpius hadn't heard him. He continued to watch the rain fall.
~•~
They were drifting apart. Draco could sense it. He had tried desperately to reach out to his son, but nothing worked.
Astoria would have known what to do. And now...well it was up to Draco to help his deeply distraught son.
After Scorpius' reappearance, he had hoped their relationship would rekindle somehow. It hadn't, despite his stress over losing him and the brief reunion that they shared was awkward. His son was back at school and that was that. Draco wished they could have spent a longer time together, especially after he had been missing for some time.
He stirred his tea thoughtfully. At least Scorpius was at Hogwarts with Albus and his professors. Still, the idea of /why/ he ran away was perplexing.
The manor chimney moved slightly. Placing his tea down, he watched as his lanky son tumbled out in a puff of soot and floo powder.
"Scorpius?" Draco asked, rushing to his side. "What are you doing here?"
Scorpius lifted his head, collapsing into his father's arms. "I came to see you."
It had been a while since they had hugged, but Draco didn't reject it. He held onto his son, his sweet son and let him weep into his chest like he was a little boy again.
"It's Albus." He gulped, voice cracking. "He won't speak to me. Dad, everything is wrong- he avoids me, all of our classes have been changed so we aren't in anything together." His eyes were glassy with tears. "I know for some reason he's in Gryffindor now, but he doesn't even ...acknowledge I exist. It's like he hates me."
"No...no...he doesn't hate you. We'll sort this all out." He paused. "And the other kids, have they been unkind?"
Scorpius stared at him in disbelief. "They've always been unkind, Dad! I'm the son of Voldemort, remember?" He snapped, tears rolling down his cheeks. "You don't know half of the things they do. Every day. Every day they hex me, belittle me, tease me. They make me feel...worthless."
Draco felt his heart break as Scorpius' face crumpled.
"School was fine with classes and such and when I had Al with me to make everything bearable. Now I don't even have him. I'm all alone. I don't want to be alone, Dad. I don't want to go back to school. I hate it there." He took a shaky breath. "I hate it so, so much."
"Scorpius I..."
"I miss mum."
"I know."
He had to make things right.
~•~
His son had come out as bisexual the following year after his little 'adventure' with Albus. Draco hadn't understood the term at first. He had to do extensive research to fully comprehend the meanings, alongside other sexualities that were included. Sexualities and gender were confusing, even Scorpius admitted it.
He didn't understand at first. But he listened to Scorpius explain tearfully, and hugged him as tight as possible when he mentioned he was dating Albus Potter.
"I love him." Scorpius said quietly. "That's what matters the most. Not my labels...nor his."
"I'm so proud of you."
~•~
His son was married.
His son was married, and he couldn't be happier.
Watching Scorpius embrace Albus at their wedding was everything Draco could have wanted. Seeing his son love someone, and look at him with such adoration made his heart soar.
He could see Astoria's bright smile in Scorpius' eyes as he laughed, leaning against his new husband. They were both glowing with genuine happiness.
‘All was well.’ He thought, wondering if Astoria was proud of him too.
~~~~~
Draco was much more confident holding his newborn granddaughter. At least, more confident than when he held Scorpius for the first time. She too, was early and had the same expression of curiosity in her eyes. He chuckled fondly as she reached her tiny hand to grab a hold of his pinky finger. She was precious as a doll, with fuzzy blonde hair and curious turquoise eyes. What a wonder, being that small and innocent.
“She’s beautiful.” He murmured. “What is her name?”
Albus grinned, pride evident in his voice. “Astoria Ginevra.”
Landings Through the Grapevine
Chapter 1: Introduction
Masterpost: here
Go to: Ch.1 | Ch.2 |
Pairing: Elliott x OC
_________________________
It was a quiet morning in Stardew Valley. Birds were singing faintly in the distance and a hazy mist hung in the air, transforming everything not directly close into blue-ish hues and indistinct shapes. The sun had just risen over the horizon, chasing after the last traces of pink in the otherwise clear, blue sky. Not one cloud was in sight.
This was indeed a pleasant surprise. The villagers had feared for the constant downpour, that has persisted for the last couple of days, to delay the annual spring festivities. But now, only the wet squelching sound under the farmer's boots disrupted the idyllic scenery, as she made her way around the forest clearing, where the annual Flower Dance would be taking place. Undeterred by the early hour, the preparations were going just as planned, though they were far from finished. Riley herself had only a few decorations left to hang up, but they were still waiting on a cart to bring a few chairs and parts of the sound equipment.
A loud continuous thumping echoed over the meadow as Robin was still busy with setting up Pierre's booth. The noise was shortly interrupted, as Robin readjusted the planks she was working on, before spotting the farmer.
“Good morning Riley! Oh, you cleaned up nicely.”, Robin greeted her cheerfully and looked her over. Though Robin had apologized for ever doubting Riley's ability to take over her grandfather's farm, it were comments like these that made conversing with the carpenter a bit difficult. As Riley still didn't know Robin too well, the double meaning of the statement was not lost on her. But today, the farmer wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, hoping that Robin was just a little aloof sometimes.
'Don't rock the boat now. Think about the barn upgrade' .
So, she forced herself to just smile and wave before turning back around and the noise of the hammer picked up again. For the occasion, Riley had indeed ditched her usual overall and stained-shirt combo, in favour of one of her nicer outfits she used to wear back in Zuzu City. The only thing left from her usual farming attire was her sword which, clearly visible on her left hip, marked her as a member of the Adventurer's Guild.
While she had been quite pleased with her decision at first, something about the outfit had triggered a weird feeling. It had taken some time for her to remember, that she had not worn these clothes since the fatal day, that she had quit her job at Joja Corporation. However, by the time Riley had come to that realization, it had been far too late to change into something else. The whole morning, she had tried to push the thought away, as today was supposed to be a good day, after all. The farmer was usually not the person to care much about traditions. Nevertheless, after walking around in clammy work clothes for the past week, even Riley was looking forward to the Flower Dance. It had been a little awkward during her first year, as she had been completely new to the community. And while most villagers had been rather welcoming towards her, it were customs such as the dance that still made her feel like an outsider.
'Well, what do I expect?' , Riley asked herself, while carefully climbing a ladder, to hang a couple of pastel-coloured, flower garlands into the lower branches of a tree. “This is my second year after all. Shane came to live with Marnie and Jas three years ago. Leah and Elliott moved here, roughly around the same time. They might be part of the town now, but otherwise, all of them are kind of outsiders too.” Even so, and the thought made her pause mid task with a snort, that was probably also due to their very individual personalities.
“Well, at least someone is having a good morning.”, remarked a deep voice from below. Speaking of the devil. Shane was looking up to her, an unreadable expression on his face and dressed in the traditional sky-blue uniform, all attending Bachelors would be wearing to the dance. In his hands was a bowl of pepper-poppers from which he ate one ever so often, while watching her work.
“Oh wow Shane, I would say you cleaned up nicely too but I might be lying”, Riley replied with a grin, to which Shane just rolled his eyes and kept chewing completely unfazed .
“Fuck you. I know I look just fine, so you can suck it!”, he grouchily mumbled, though it sounded more like he tried to convince himself rather than her. “You sure do, buddy”. Finally happy with her work, Riley descended the ladder to greet her friend properly. “And you would look even better, if you stopped stuffing your face like a pig!”.
“They're my favorite”, he protested childishly and provocatively grabbed another pepper.
“And I spend a lot of time making them all by myself.”
“I helped too”
“No, you flaked to play soccer with Jas and Vincent!”
Shane's expression bore a cheeky grin, probably anticipating to say something rude. But the pair was interrupted by Pierre, calling out for their help to unload the cart that had finally arrived….
Since Marnie was still in a not-so-secret- relationship with Mayor Lewis, she insisted on taking part in the preparations of any official festivity. Many of the dishes, decked onto a couple of large folding tables, had been prepared the previous day at Marnie's farm, with Riley chipping in her labour and even part of her harvest.
“What happened to breakfast, you greedy gremlin?”, asked Riley, saving the half empty bowl from Shane's grasp, to return it to the buffet. The gremlin in question trailed behind, pretending like he was not sulking over the loss of the food:
“As you like to remind me, microwaved pizza is no proper breakfast”. At that Riley raised both eyebrows in mock-astonishment:
“Oh, so now the good sir suddenly cares about what I have to say ?”
“So Riley, you're not dancing?”, Marlon asked in between sips of punch.
The sun had risen higher in the sky, and the cool morning had turned into a bright midday. Everything was set up and ready. Soft music played over lively conversation, as bit by bit all villagers arrived. Riley didn't really know what to do with herself, when she could no longer hide behind tasks and actually had to socialize. Seeing Marlon standing in a far corner of the meadow, one hand calmly resting on the hilt of his sword while overseeing the scenery, presented a great excuse to escape dreadful smalltalk. They were well acquainted by now and she had not seen him in a while, other than when she visited the Guild directly. It wasn't too weird, if she made use of that affiliation, right?
If Marlon felt disturbed through her presence he didn't let it show. He just nodded in acknowledgement and together they watched the Spring Maidens enter the clearing, garbed in white from head to toe, with lacy floral decorations sewn onto their dresses and flowers in their hair.
“I think, such ' spirits ' might have other things to worry about right now”.
Unfortunately for her, even Marlon seemed talkative today and Riley answered him reluctantly: “No. As far as I am concerned, the couples dancing stay mostly the same. Wouldn't want to disrupt that order, y'a know”, That was not entirely true, though. The other reason was that a certain someone would most likely turn her down if she'd ever asked him. And Riley was not willing to open THAT can of worms anytime soon. Marlon hummed in understanding: “I see. I just thought, since you're a farmer, you might want to participate.”
“What does being a farmer have to do with that?”
Marlon looked at her, the brow above his remaining eye slightly raised in surprise: ”The flower dance is an ancient fertility ceremony. Back when the village still believed in the spirits of this land, the dance was held to gain their favour for the upcoming harvest. Surely you wouldn't want the spirits that make things grow on your bad side, ey?”.
Riley was not sure what to make of this new piece of information, so the farmer and the monster hunter fell back into silence. Looking around, the meadow didn't really look like an old or magical place to her. It most definitely didn't feel like one either. Compared to the eerie solitude of the Community Center and the claustrophobic depths of the mines, the clearing seemed so very ordinary. On the other hand, it wouldn't be the first time that the Valley proved to be full of surprises. One year ago, Riley was some disillusioned worker's bee in a corporate nightmare. Now, she belonged to a world where magic was real, wizards lived in secluded towers, monsters hid in the depths of the wild and animals could talk. Or rather, Riley could suddenly talk to them (?). Overall, the land was full of entities and forces, Riley didn't plan to meddle with, let alone offend. For a moment she got worried enough, that she almost asked Marlon directly, if he thought the Junimos would truly be cross with her, for not attending the dance. But she decided against it, as someone might end up overhearing their conversation. Surely, Marlon was one of the few people in Pelican Town, who knew about the otherworldliness of the valley. He had probably seen more than Riley would ever experience in her lifetime. But this wasn't the time and place to talk about such things openly.
“And they better have their priorities straight. If they ever dare giving me shit, for not doing that stupid dance, I'm out. Have fun rebuilding the Community Center without me !”,
was what she did not say. “Besides, wouldn't it look silly to be wearing a sword with such a dress?”, she jokingly gestured in the direction of the Bachelorettes, but to no one in particular. Marlon, again, shortly averted his eyes from the crowd to look at her, in what one might consider to be amusement: “Silly? Kid, that sword is a badge of honour. Of course we wear it to any occasion, men and women alike. Back in the days, Old Linda wouldn't be caught dead not wearing her sword. Also made the lads keep their hands to themselves, if you know what I mean.”, at this he cackled quietly to himself and took another sip.
“What happened to them? Linda and the other women in the guild?”, Riley asked curiously since Marlon rarely was so chatty. “What do you think? This was way before your time. They're probably dead or very old. Some got married, moved to the city and forgot all about their old lives here. ….Your grandma was one of the last”.
Marlon's eyes were back on the gathering, but there was something harsh crossing his features. Riley didn't know what to say. So she just kept watching him in hopes he would elaborate on that. But he remained shrouded in silence. She knew that their conversation was over for good. And knowing Marlon, he wouldn't want to talk about it anytime soon either. So, she tried pushing her questions into the back of her mind and rather focused on the gathering at hand, where the female villagers were now the centre of attention.
The first Bachelorette she saw was the blue haired bar-maid who was hard not to overlook, thanks to her outgoing personality. Emily's dress was full of ruffles and detailed embroidery and made her look even more whimsical. Like a fairy, she was all smiles and joy, half-dancing half skipping over the grass barefoot, as her skirts flowed and billowed along her every movement. If Clint was trying not to stare at her directly, he unfortunately wasn't very good at it. And with concern, Riley noticed the disdain in his eyes when she hugged Shane and started chatting excitedly. Abigail was the polar opposite, in the way she acted all nonchalantly and kept her posture extremely casual. She smirked and rolled her eyes at anyone complimenting her dress, but soon settled into her usual group of friends and as far away from her parents, as physically possible. Haley posed a little to better show off her new dress and happily chatted with Jody and Caroline about the cut and some issues she had with shipping.
It was then that Riley caught a glimpse of auburn in the crowd and her heart skipped a beat, when she saw Elliott and Leah chatting with Marnie and Harvey. He looked handsome (but then Riley always thought he was) with his blue overcoat complimenting his fair skin tone, while contrasting his coppery hair. Leah, who didn't seem too interested in the conversation at hand, ended up catching her gaze and gave a small wave. Riley felt like she missed a step on a staircase and could hardly control the nervous flutter in her chest, when Elliott turned his head in her direction too. His noble features turned from confused to an amused smile as he spotted her. And just like the gentleman he was, he gave her a courteous nod. Riley could not help, but smile back warmly with butterflies fluttering in her stomach.
It was silly.
But a crush was a crush.
Ever since Elliott had invited her for drinks during a chance meeting at the saloon, Riley had been head over heels for the cocky and slightly eccentric writer. He was charming in his good old fashioned way. Not only did he look like the figurative embodiment of a Jane Austen character. He also played the part: always most polite and private in an outside setting and so very concerned about the impression he made on others. But once rather tipsy, Elliott had been much more forthcoming in what was actually going on in his mind. Riley fondly remembered how she couldn't stop laughing after unexpectedly hearing Elliott say ' shit ' for the first time.
It was nice. …
Just a shame, that his interest in her had not survived the night. While they had parted in good spirits, the next day, their interaction was back to pleasant conversation and occasional discussions on his drafts. Riley respected that. Of course she did. But that didn't stop her from developing quite a passion for fishing, in hopes to see him standing at the docks when battling his usual writer's block. For a moment Elliott looked as if he tried to excuse himself from his current company. He kept looking back at her with, what almost seemed like, impatience as he waited for Harvey to finish talking. But then, Mayor Lewis announced for the dance to begin and Elliot took Leah's hand, to gracefully lead her to the middle of the clearing, along with the other couples.
A YEAR LATER
Y/N woke up in her bedroom with the sounds of birds chirping, the signs that another spring day was starting to wake up in Paris. Extending her arms, she remained under her weighted blanket for a while, watching the chandelier above their bed. It had been a wedding present from her mother’s part of the family and while both her and Sebastian thought it was a bit too much, they eventually got their contractor to install it in their bedroom in their Paris apartment. It had taken a bit of time to get used to but now she had the ritual of waking up and watching the sun create little rainbows through the clear crystal of the chandelier.
After she felt her awake status surround her whole being, she left her bed, grabbing her dressing gown and wrapping herself around it before taking to the room next to her. Slowly and carefully, she pulled on the handle of the door down, opening it. Her eyes came in contact with the peaceful grey colours of the walls slightly decorated with small little ivory coloured clouds. Coming in closer, she let her hips slightly hit the white crib where the one year old was standing, wide awake with the ear of Sebastian’s old toy bunny, Oreo, in his mouth.
- Hello my little bunny. - she smiled down at her son who, recognising his mother’s voice, immediately started to giggle, extending his arms up to be picked up by her. Y/N merely smiled, extending her own arms towards his crib to pick him and hold him against her chest. - Let’s go have breakfast. Can you say breakfast?
- Dada. - he said with a smile that showed he was proud of himself. She rolled her eyes at the word, if there was something Sebastian had done perfectly was make sure their son’s first word would be dada and while Y/N had been trying to make sure Nate spoke anything else, he only proudly said dada much to her nuisance. Y/N merely smiled as she rolled her eyes, getting him off his grey onesie and into a white shirt with little train drawings and some dark jean overalls. - Dada, dada!
- Say mumma. - she laughed, holding him close as she took to the kitchen where Amelia was starting to cook some breakfast. - Mumma.
- Dadda! - he broke out in laughter, wrapping his chubby arms around his mother’s neck. Y/N merely smiled, sitting down on her chair and pulling the high chair with her foot, popping the tray off so she could sit the baby down who was never happy whenever she strapped him to his high chair which is why Sebastian normally did it himself, but as of today he was still in New York dealing with some business transaction gone wrong. Normally Y/N would’ve travelled along with him but ever since Nate had been born, she had been paranoid someone would try and harm him.
- Morning, Mrs. Stan. - Amelia placed a plate of Y/N’s favourite breakfast, poached egg on mushrooms in front of her and a blue plate of slice bananas in front of baby Nate whose hands immediately went for the slices. - Are you sure you don’t want me to bake the cake for baby Nathaniel?
- Your holiday started yesterday, Amelia. You shouldn’t even be here.
- It’s baby Nathaniel’s birthday.
- So it isn’t due to my husband? - she raised an eyebrow at the maid. - You don’t need to worry about me, I’ll be fine.
- Mr. Stan is worried.
- Mr. Stan is always worried. - to say that Sebastian had upped security since the ill fated Mr. Williams incident was an understatement. If Y/N left the house to go to the bakery, four armed men would follow her around with one in front, one in the back and two on each side. Yet, that was nothing compared to when Nathaniel went outside. She guessed it was a regular thing, after all her small little ball of sunshine was the one who would one of day solely inherit her mother’s fortune, her father’s family and Sebastian’s too. Either way, he was excessive with protection and she should’ve guessed he wouldn’t have allowed her to be alone with their son for a long while. Before she could try and convince the hardworking full time maid to take her much deserved holiday, Nate grabbed his plastic plate, smashing his face against the banana slices making her choke in a laugh. - Alright bunny, that’s enough bananas.
- Don’t be upset at him, Mrs. Stan.
- I won’t if you take your holiday. - Y/N pushed her plate away from her, walking to her son’s high chair. Nate extended his chubby arms towards her, cooing to be removed from it which she complied to, holding him to her chest as she walked over to the living room that was filled with toys and other things belonging to Nate. He was spoiled but in this Y/N couldn’t completely blame Sebastian as she could be even as bad as him when it came to fullfilling her son’s requests.
Placing him on his baby matt, Nate turned onto his belly crawling over to her mother’s knees, looking up at her with a look that could only be described as cheeky. Y/N lowered to her knees, watching as Nathaniel crawled around happily with his toy bunny. He still didn’t say much and was still learning to how to walk, instead putting himself up on his legs, holding onto the couch before eventually collapsing to the ground. Speaking of which, the one year hold grasped onto the white leather and pulling himself off the ground and on his chubby legs, the other hand firmly gripping onto the bunny’s ears.
- Do you wanna try and walk all the way to mumma? - she asked the blue eyed baby who looked away from her and back again. - Go on, come to mumma.
Nate looked at her with confusion, the eyes he had definitely inherited from his father looking around the room almost as if he was preparing to fall into a pit of fire. With Oreo clenched by the ear, he let go of the couch, standing on his chubby baby legs. Before he could take another step, he went tumbling towards the ground yet Y/N was faster than that, moving so she could catch her baby before he got hurt. As he collapsed on her lap, he turned his head up to look at his mother, pouty lips and tear filled eyes.
- It’s okay, baby. It’s okay. - she pushed the brown curls away from his face, leaning down to kiss the top of his head. - It’s okay, mumma will always be here to catch you.
- Mumma. - he babbled, burying his head on her chest.
- What did you say? - she looked down in disbelief but before the baby could say it again the front door opened, a very familiar voice coming through.
- Where’s the birthday boy? - Y/N rolled her eyes, picking Nate up and getting up before walking to the entrance where Sebastian was taking his jacket off, placing away his gun before his wife could complain to him about weapons near the baby. His eyes shined with pride as he watched Y/N stand in front of him, holding their son on her arms, who had taken to hide his face in the middle of her hair. - Someone’s shy today.
- Guess what. - she walked closer to him, pecking him quickly. - Nate said mumma.
- No way. - Sebastian cooed at his son, caressing the top of his head. - You can say mumma, little buddy?
- Dadda! - Nate shrilled out of pure joy, extending his arms towards him which Sebastian gladly took, kissing the side of his head.
- You know, Seb, next time you ask the maid to watch over me at least let me know. - she leaned against him, head on his shoulder. - My father’s security can handle me and Nate when you’re not around, I told you that a million times.
- Can you blame me for wanting you and him to be safe?
- No, I can however blame you for making the hardworking maid work overtime. - she smirked. - How’s New York?
- It’s rather bleak when you’re not there.
- Did you speak with my father? - she questioned, fully knowing Sebastian would probably be questioned by her family back in New York at arrival.
- Yes and both him and Dan think it’s rude that they’re not invited to Nate’s birthday.
- Nate’s not getting a big birthday party, I told them.
- I know, angel, but you know how much your father likes this little bunny. - Sebastian smiled at his son who had taking to munching his jacket’s collar, eyes looking into the ones exactly like his. - Pretty sure the only reason I’m not dead is because I’m his dad.
- C’mon, we need to take Nate’s cake out of the fridge and sing happy birthday before his nap time.
- It’s his birthday, angel. Can’t he skip night time?
- Sure, he can. However if he does then we lose night time fun as you’ll be the one to check on him when he tries to climb out the crib.
- Birthday cake time it is. - he followed Y/N into the kitchen, placing his son on his play matt. The baby rolled around, hands gripping several of his toys while his father went to the kitchen, wrapping his arms around his wife’s waist, placing a kiss on her shoulder. - Did you miss me?
- Of course I did. - she turned around to kiss him, hands on top of his shoulders as if they hadn’t seen each other in years. - It gets awfully cold when you’re alone in a king size bed.
- Mhm, it does get very cold, doesn’t it? - his hands toyed around with the string that held her wrap up dress in place. - Does our son’s birthday also count as my birthday?
- Why would it count as your birthday? - she furrowed her brows.
- It’s the anniversary of when I became a father and I think I deserve a little present. - he leaned down to kiss her neck.
- Well, I think th ...
- MUMMA! - the babyish voice coming from the living room interrupted her sentence and made Y/N look over Sebastian’s shoulder to see Nate standing on his chubby legs as he took a few small steps towards the kitchen table.
- Oh my god. - she ducked under Sebastian’s hold to meet her son midway, grabbing the polaroid camera on the way to take a photo before he fell down or decided to sit down. - You’re walking. Nate, you’re walking!
- What? - Sebastian turned around, joining his wife who was now sat on the ground with her arms opened towards Nate who quickly walked over to her before falling on top of her chest. - He walked, he just walked!
- I know. - Y/N picked the baby up, kissing his little fat cheeks. - I’m so proud of you, I’m so proud of you baby Nate.
- I can’t believe he’s walking already. We need another one.
- Sebastian, we just had one.
- Yeah but he’s walking and he can say mumma and dadda. In no time he’ll be going off to university and won’t want snuggles anymore.
- Honey, Nate can’t say anything other than mumma and dadda, is still eating soft solids, and he doesn’t even have all his teeth yet. He won’t be going to university any time soon.
- No, I think we need another one. A girl this time, so we have one of each.
- Seb, darling, I don’t think that’s how it works. Besides, wouldn’t you rather wait til Nate is a bit older and doesn’t require attention all the time?
- I know, it’s just that looking at you with our son makes me want to have at least 10 more kids.
- I won’t push 10 more kids. - she laughed, kissing his cheek before looking down to Nate who was cuddling her and his bunny. - For now, for now I have everything I could have ever dreamed of.
- Should we get that cake then?
- It’s in the fridge. - Y/N carefully got up, holding her precious baby close to her chest as Sebastian went and grabbed the little cupcake. The ex handmaid placed her son on his high chair as Sebastian put the little cupcake in front of him, lighting a single candle with his lighter which immediately caught the attention of small Nate whose eyes widened in pure joy and curiosity.
The mob boss wrapped his arm around his wife, kissing the side of her head before the two of them started singing Happy Birthday to little Nate who was clearly more interested in the flame of his candle. Once the song came to an end, both of them cheered, clapping at the baby who looked at his parents in confusion.
- C’mon, Nate blow the candle. - Sebastian took to be by his son’s side, making a blow motion with his lips. Nate merely turned to his mother, confused at his father’s actions.
- Why don’t we do it together? - Y/N stood by her son’s other side, blowing the candle together with Sebastian while Nate giggled, clapping his hands out of pure joy. - Happy Birthday, sweetheart. Mumma loves you, dadda loves you.
The rest of the day went rather uneventful, with Nate making both his parents laugh as he decided to eat the cupcake with his hands, getting his cheeks full of chocolate. He remained awake for a few hours, playing with his father while Y/N read one of her books in the couch, wondering how she’d gotten so lucky to have such a precious son and such a loving husband. As night began to make its presence known and the birthday boy became grumpy, Y/N put him back in his crib returning to the living room to see Sebastian standing on their balcony watching the Tower Eiffel’s lights. Without him noticing, she walked behind him, wrapping her arms around his torso, allowing herself to be involved by the scent of his cologne.
- Hello there, Mrs. Stan. - he turned around in her embrace, hand going to hold hers. - How about a dance?
- I can never say no to you, Mr. Stan.
He leaned his head to rest against the space between her neck and shoulder, free hand holding her waist as the two of them moved slowly from side to side. In that moment, no money belonging to her or to him, no empire he’d built or family she inherited mattered for in that moment he had his whole world in his arms and that ... that was enough.
*Reader’s POV*
While it wasn’t the most shocking thing that had ever happened to you, being instated as a member, but not technically a member, of the Special Operations Squad was definitely up there on your list of most surprising things that had happened to you. The weird in-between position they gave you to try and mediate how unprecedented it was to have a rookie join Levi Squad after just one expedition may have been a glorified lackey, but it was still a position with Captain Levi’s Squad.
Of course, right now, that consisted of doing the menial chores, message delivery, and other small tasks like that, but you were still a part of the team. They’d only given you this aid position they’d made on the spot because you were so new, and it did a decent job of putting you at the bottom of the food chain until you were more seasoned. However, you were still considered part of Captain Levi’s Squad--you had your own private chambers and everything, which meant you wouldn’t have to worry about not waking up anyone while you snuck out of the barracks every once in a while to get something to eat.
Also, now that you were officially being placed with a squad, you knew what people you had to try and made friends with. Before you’d been hesitant--sure, you understood that the Scouts operated in a way that was going to make teamwork and camaraderie important, so you were going to have to be more social, but you still wanted to be careful about who you let get close. You still had an instinct to keep everyone at an arm’s length besides those you /had/ to keep close, which you had rationalized would include whoever you were put under and the rest of your squad.
While you’d known Levi was watching you and the rumors had been running rampant that a rookie would be joining his squad, you’d been well aware that he wasn’t watching you because he wanted to add you to the group--he was suspicious of you. That sparring match you’d had with him had tipped him off, and he hadn’t relented in his pursuit ever since then. In fact, when he’d told you that you were going to be a part of his squad, he didn’t look entirely pleased about it. Sure, Captain Levi was usually hard to read and usually appeared distant or unapproachable, but the look in his eyes had been...colder. It made you suspicious that having you on the squad had not been his decision, or at the very least it had been one he’d made despite his reservations.
Keep your enemies close, right?
Once it was on the table that this might be a position meant solely as an excuse to keep a closer eye on you, it made your skin crawl, and you approached every situation with caution. You had to watch every step, like you were walking across a tightrope and would drown if you slipped and fell into the waters down below.
When you’d joined the Scouts, you knew that it was going to be difficult to balance being a Scout with hiding your true nature, but this was far beyond what you had expected. It made you dearly wish that you had thrown that match back on the training grounds, that he’d never gotten a sense that you were hiding something so fiercely.
Soon, you were going to be kept up at night with an internal struggle to either stick it out and try to endure so you could do what you came here to do, or if you should just take off and slink back into the shadows.
But you couldn’t bear the thought of going back to that life, as much as it might have been ‘safer’ in a way. You wanted desperately to be here--but did you want it bad enough that you were going to throw all caution to the wind, risk the Captain getting too close to your secret. In the past, before you’d joined the military, you’d killed the people who came too close to exposing you. But that wasn’t an option, here. You knew how valuable Captain Levi was to the Scouts--humanity couldn’t afford to lose him, so you couldn’t afford to touch him. Your only choice was to play this god forsaken cat and mouse game and pray that you came out on top.
Thankfully, the other members of the squad weren’t aware of the cat and mouse you and Levi were caught up in--not yet, anyway. Though they were understandably confused and even a little irritated at the inclusion of a still-green rookie, even if it was as an aid. Maybe the aid position caused a bit more tension, because a new position had been created just so you could be added to the group.
Give it time, you told yourself as you continued cleaning your private room that had been assigned to you, currently working on cleaning the desk off until it had a polished shine to it. Even if Levi hadn’t added you to the squad because he necessarily wanted you here, you were still going to prove that you could belong here, if they would let you.
“Did you finish with the stables?”
“Yes, sir. Mucked out, equipment cleaned, horses fed, watered, and brushed, shoes cleaned, all of it.”
“What about cleaning inside, have you done all the tasks you were assigned?”
“All except what Oluo asked me to do. I haven’t got there yet."
"Well, get to it. And when you're done come down to the training grounds for some training."
"Yes, sir!"
As you walked away from Eld, your ears picked up on a passing comment he made to Gunther when he thought you were out of earshot.
“Is it just me, or is it frustrating how easily and quickly she tends to get all of her tasks done? I can’t even find anything wrong with it, so I can’t claim she’s rushing through it!”
"You too? I thought it was just Oluo complaining about that."
Just as you'd suspected. The others weren't pleased with your easy access to this position. They weren't going to say anything because they trusted Levi’s judgement and as far as they knew it was his decision, but that didn't mean they weren't going to be at least a little irritated. How long had it taken before they'd been added to Levi’s squad? How many expeditions, how much hard work? By all accounts, it looked like you'd had smooth and effortless sailing into a position among the elite.
The fact they kept having you do the shit chores was just a way to kick you back in the dirt and remind you that you were still a rookie, and they were the veterans with experience.
However, you didn't complain. You could do the jobs faster than anyone without loosing accuracy because of it. Not to mention you felt it might be cathartic for their frustrations. Though, now it seemed they had a new reason to be frustrated.
You'd tone it back to appease them, but Levi already knew what your full effort looked like with the cleaning jobs--he'd know you were holding back, and you highly doubted he'd appreciate that when it came to cleaning, knowing his standards.
Quickly, you made your way back inside and up to Oluo's chambers, stopping outside the door and giving a firm knock.
"Who's there?"
"It's L/N, you said you had a job for me to do?"
"It's about time you showed up. Get in here!"
After he'd officially invited you inside, you opened the door, stepping inside and expecting to see paperwork or supplies or something else you would have to deliver or put away.
Nope. Oluo was standing there with cleaning supplies presented in the middle of the room. You immediately knew where this was going, and even you could tell it wasn't going to end well.
"Start cleaning, rookie. I've got more important things I have to get done, and I want it shining by the time I get back," Oluo ordered, complete with a puffed out chest.
You were supposed to follow their orders without question, but you knew Oluo was taking advantage of that fact. Maybe he was hoping having you clean his quarters before Levi inspected them later today would help him look better to the Captain. But you were also certain that Levi would recognize that it was your work and not Oluo's
For Oluo's sake, since you were certain he would be the one getting in trouble, you pushed back slightly.
"Doesn't Captain Levi prefer if we clean our own spaces?" You asked as you picked up the broom. Oluo turned by the door, fixing you with the imitation of an expression befitting a superior who'd just heard a subordinate talk back.
"Huh? How long have you been here, rookie, compared to me?" Oluo challenged. You shrugged, turning back to the cleaning supplies and the room you were supposed to clean.
His funeral.
The window was open to let in natural light and try to chase away the gloomy atmosphere in your room, silence filling the space except for the birds outside and the scratching against the paper you were currently drawing on. Your eyes, however, were unfocused, looking past the piece you were drawing and instead getting lost in the sea of your depressed thoughts.
For three years you’d been back among people, mingling and being a part of society, but never had you felt so...ostracized. You were among people, but you weren’t close to anyone. Your peers thought you were a haughty perfectionist ice queen and were irritated by how easily everything came to you, Captain Levi was suspicious that there was something you were hiding and was watching your every move with a coldness in his eyes, and your new squad mates were currently using you as the gopher to dump all the chores they didn’t want to do onto you while giving you examining, dubious looks from a distance trying to figure out why you were even here.
You sat alone at meals, you didn’t go anywhere on your days off--the closest thing you had to a companion were the horses, and most of them were still frightened by you.
You wanted to be here, but...it was getting so hard just to be here. Was it really worth it if you were going to spend your days feeling like this?
On the paper spread out in front of you, you had a picture drawn from the mental image in your mind’s eye--a single flower in a barren spot surrounded by lush field. The sun shone everywhere else, but this single spot was cast in shadow. Despite the barren ground and the lack of sunlight, the flower was trying to bloom, partially budded, some petals trying to uncurl, but ice covered it’s petals and held prisoner it’s stem, restraining it in the icy chill, needing assistance but nothing around it willing or able to help.
You put down what you were drawing with, a lump in your throat and tears in your eyes as you headed over to your bed and stretched out on top of the neatly made covers, arms digging under the pillow you buried your face in before tears could overflow.
You were surrounded by people, but you’d never felt so lonely, and you wanted it to change. Even though you’d signed up for this and known it would be difficult, you couldn’t take living like this anymore. Something had to change. You didn’t know how you were going to keep your secret while trying to let people in enough to form bonds, but it was the only real option that you had.
The guys were all dubious of you, you could tell from overheard conversations and the looks in their eyes, but Petra...well, you thought if you were going to start trying to build a friendship somewhere, she might be the one to go to. She’d been a bit more...open, about the whole arrangement, and she was actually asking for help and trying to get a feel for you while everyone else seemed to be going out of their way to remind you that you were at the bottom of the food chain right now.
Starting tomorrow...you were going to try and be a companion and hopefully manage to find some friendship. Starting with Petra.
*Petra’s POV*
The mess hall was noisy as ever, making it a little surprising that Captain Levi was still sitting with them at the table after repeating the lecture he'd given Oluo later about doing his own cleaning. Now that Oluo had attempted to have the rookie clean his space and then pass it off as his own, the rest of them got to get the warning to do their own responsibilities without shoving them all off on the new girl.
Petra had felt bad that she seemed to be getting all the crap jobs nobody wanted to do and then some while the others seemed determined to make sure she knew her place, but she hadn't said anything because not once had the woman complained or looked the least bit upset by it. Until today, Petra had been unsure how to even approach her, something about her making her seem closed off and unreachable.
However, today she had approached Petra, quietly asking Petra if she would teach her the nuances for how everything was cleaned around here. Preferences of soaps and organization, what went where and the like. You could clean till everything shone like a new coin, bur preferences had to be taught or learned. She'd been aware of it, and she had been humble enough to approach Petra for answers.
It was only when she was approached that Petra suddenly realized how alone the woman seemed. She never ate with them--in fact she was certain she ate alone--and she was never seen around anyone from her years as a cadet, she didn't seem to leave headquarters to visit family, and if you needed to find her she was either alone in her room or with the horses in the stable. She was never with someone unless she was doing her job.
The thing that made Petra realize all this was how she was approached. The woman shifted her weight, a white knuckle grip on the broom in her hand despite visible restraint, her eyes fixed down and to the side, a slight tremble in her hand and a hunch of her shoulders like she was anticipating some negative reaction, or at least reluctance.
It wasn't right. She was part of their squad, and it was their job to make sure she felt included. Captain Levi must have felt that she was ready on some level to be here, and they were her comrades. At the very least, she should have a place among them--she shouldn't be so alone.
So, while everyone else was chatting as usual around the table, Petra kept an eye out for their new squad member. It took a while, but when the woman finally appeared and left the line to get her food, Petra attempted to catch her attention without the others noticing.
They locked gazes, and Y/N hesitated before she approached their table, making the others look up as she came astride the table.
"May I sit here?" she asked hesitantly, gaze flickering around at the others and lingering briefly on Captain Levi at the head of the table.
"Of course," Petra said instantly, gesturing to an empty seat beside her and flashing a look at the others daring them to disagree while Y/N was taking her seat. "It's about time you started sitting with your squad."
Her cheeks tinged pink in mild embarrassment, Y/N took a few bites of her meal, clearly uncertain about what to do next.
Well, if everyone else was just going to sit here in awkward silence, and Y/N wasn’t going to take the initiative because she wasn’t sure how, Petra would just have to do it herself.
“So, where are you from?” Petra asked her. It was probably the best, simple answer to get the ball rolling on conversation.
“A small town in Wall Rose--it tends to get overlooked, and it's usually quiet around there except the occasional scandal.”
“Do you have much family back home?”
“No, it’s just me.”
The way she said it was short, clearly ending the topic there, but she managed to not make it sound mean--just that she wasn’t entirely comfortable talking about it, which made sense. Petra continued to chat with her, asking simple questions to try and learn more about her, basing some off her observations of the woman--like if she was good with animals. Apparently animals weren’t always that fond of her, but she had a soft spot for them despite some animals distaste of her. She thought she might be good with cats or birds, but hadn’t really had the opportunity to test her theory out.
After a bit of back and forth between Petra and Y/N about their lives and learning about one another, the others started to join in as well--aside from Captain Levi, who seemed content to just focus on his meal and listen while everyone talked around him. As the conversation flowed a little more naturally, Y/N started to loosen up and relax, taking charge of the conversation a few times to ask about the others as well as she bloomed from a closed off background character in a novel to a more outgoing and engaging individual. It was quite the change to witness. She still withdrew into herself with more personal questions, especially about her past before joining the Scouts, which gave Petra the impression that the Scouts were a sort of fresh start for the woman. She shared with them why she’d joined the Scouts, which none of them could deny was a valid enough reason after seeing her in action. She had skill, and if she wanted those skills to be put to use, the Scouts were arguably the best place for them, and the faction of the military with the strongest need for them. Besides, who didn’t want to feel useful? Unfortunately, many Scouts died, and some died so quickly it was easy to wonder if their deaths ever had any meaning to begin with, if it had been worth it. However, Petra had the feeling this one wasn’t going to be one of those recruits that appeared and disappeared without ever leaving much of a mark. She just might be around for a while, especially if she was going to take the time to learn from the elites she’d been placed with and stayed grounded, level-headed, and smart.
As the questions drifted away from the personal, in part because of Y/N’s continued reluctance to delve too deeply into the personal, they started peppering her with the twenty-questions kinds of inquiries. What were her likes and dislikes, favorites, hobbies, fears, aspirations, that kind of thing. Some she was able to answer relatively quickly, even if it wasn’t simple, such as having no clear favorite because she liked so many, and other times she hesitated, such as when she was asked aspirations, because she hadn’t given it much thought, being so focused on this current stage of her life.
“What about biggest fears?”
“Oluo!” Petra protested, giving him a dirty look. They were all eating, and this question alone could get extremely dark considering the horrors they faced every day outside the wall.
“What? It’s a legitimate question. Some people are scared of spiders, others heights--though you don’t get much of that one in the military, I think--it could be all kinds of things.”
"I think the answer to that is a little too morbid for dinner conversation," Y/N said with a slightly weak smile, which made Petra think it might actually be something to do with Titans. If it was, it was probably best they didn’t hear it, just in case.
"Nah, it's fine, we're sharing--so what is it? Fire? Dolls? Dead fish?" Oluo asked cheekily.
"Um...being buried alive, actually," Y/N answered, looking down and picking at her food.
"Damn, that is a pretty scary thought. Wasn't expecting that one," Oluo muttered. Petra wasn’t paying attention to him--she was reading Y/N’s body language, how she’d seemed to withdraw into herself and her hand was trembling as she pushed around the food left on her plate. It was most likely at the thought of this fear of hers, if Petra had to guess. The mental imagery alone was terrifying.
At the other end of the table, Levi was staring at Y/N intently, having noticed the same things, and a little more.
“Now that Oluo has officially tried to sabotage the evening, let’s try some gossip: I hear you had a knack for sneaking out in the Cadet Corps and never got caught. What were you doing? I’ve heard some interesting theories,” Gunther said with a perceiving glint in his eyes. Y/N sighed even as everyone’s attention centered on her.
“God damn those rumors are going to follow me for the rest of my life, aren’t they?” she mused, not denying that she snuck out as she took a slow drink.
“Well, Rookie? Care to share?” Oluo asked as she sat down her drink.
She turned to look at the rest of the group, and then with an unreadable expression and in a completely deadpan tone, stated, "I strip naked in the pale moonlight and conduct blood rituals to achieve perfection."
There was a heartbeat, and then snorts, chuckles, a ripple of amusement through the group at the joke.
"Rookie's got a sense of humor," Oluo mused.
Y/N’s lips quirked towards a half smile, taking another drink. "Wish I could say the same for you."
There was a bit more laughter this time, even as Oluo scowled, no one bothering to hide their amusement at the comment.
"And some snark, to boot," Gunther snickered as Oluo sulked. “But really, though, what were you doing?”
Y/N sighed, setting down her drink again. “It wasn’t...actually, you know what,” she said with a sparkle in her eye and a mischievous smile. “I hear there’s a pot for the theories. Place bets on it, maybe one day I’ll actually tell you. Maybe I won’t.”
“Oh, come on,” Oluo complained loudly.
“Now that’s just mean,” Petra said with a cluck of her tongue and a shake of her head while Y/N settled back down, visibly proud of her teasing.
Caught up in their banter and companionable discussion, no one noticed how at the head of the table, laid back in his chair, Levi showed no sign of amusement, his gaze fixated on Y/N with a sharp, cold look.
*Reader’s POV*
After you’d taken your first steps towards developing a warmer relationship with your squad mates, things started to go a bit easier for you. You were still at the bottom of the food chain, and the responsibilities as an aid hadn’t changed, but you didn’t think you were getting as much shit dumped on you. It probably helped that Captain Levi had apparently given them a lecture about doing their own chores instead of getting lazy and shoving them all off on her.
For the most part, it was Petra that you were getting close to. The others were becoming cordial, and you had even approached Eld asking him if he could give you lessons on ODM gear technique after hearing he was quite skilled at utilizing the ODM gear. That seemed to have helped the relationship there--frankly, whenever you showed a bit of humility about still having a lot to learn, they warmed up a bit more.
It seemed there had been concerns that you would be an arrogant big headed pain in their asses with how quickly you’d shot into the elite squad, and showing them that you still considered yourself in a learning position and not above anyone helped assuage those fears.
Captain Levi...was as suspicious of you as ever. Except now you were around him enough to feel the chill in his gaze even after you left his presence. That was a relationship you weren’t sure you were in a position to improve. You’d given him plenty of reasons to be suspicious of you, but you were still trying your damnedest not to give him a reason to mistrust you. Maybe it would just take time to prove yourself in his eyes, but at this rate, it was looking like a /deep/ hole you were going to have to climb out of, and for some reason, it just kept getting deeper.
Since it was going to be the more difficult task, you resolved to worry about making a better relationship with Captain Levi later and instead focus on improving the relationship with your squad mates. Firstly, you didn’t want to be a kiss ass, especially cause you knew it would be obvious. Second, ideally by the time you set about improving your relationship with the Captain, he might have warmed up a bit to you.
At the very least, it would be nice if that chill wasn’t in his gaze anymore.
Right now, Petra was the closest thing to a confidant and friend that you had. After you had initially approached her about learning the nuances for cleaning, she’d taken the initiative to help you learn the ropes and adjust to the other nuances of being in Levi Squad, which involved a lot of dos and don’ts. She’d even pulled you aside one evening and sat you down so she could teach you how to properly make Captain Levi’s tea how he liked it, so that if or when he asked for it--and apparently he eventually asked everyone at some point, at least to gauge their tea making skills--you would be ready. You’d been down in the kitchen for a surprisingly long time for that one, since apparently Levi liked his black tea made a very specific way, and additives weren’t usually his preference, so there would be no masking any off taste.
Shortly after, you’d decided to let Petra know about your secret little garden with your tea making herbs. You’d gone when you both had some free time to spare, crouching down beside the garden and talking with her about the different herbs for your blends you’d added and why, complete with a prepared excuse about why the white sage was so far away from the rest and why you wore gloves when handling the plans at all times.
The white sage you told her needed to stay separate because it was aggressive and you didn’t want it taking over the smaller herbs, when you really kept it separate because it burned at the touch and you didn’t want to risk even accidentally brushing against it while you were working on this hobby of yours. As for the gloves, it was the same concept--it let you handle the sage safely without harming yourself, though you told her it was for cleanliness and to keep your natural oils off of the tea herb plants.
As you’d chatted about the herbs in your garden and potential additions (With Petra suggesting adding the plants necessary to make some black tea blends of your own), you’d caught a familiar scent on the breeze, which led you to hone your senses on the individual’s breathing and heartbeat. They were staying a safe distance away so as not to be noticed, but close enough that if something happened they would be there in an instant. They were tense and cautious, listening intently to what was being discussed.
It seemed Captain Levi had reached the point he didn’t trust you alone with the other members of Squad Levi in places that were hidden from the public eye. Your best guess for his presence was that it was out of concern for Petra, wanting to make sure the other woman was truly safe in your presence.
Once again, you understood his cautiousness, and he wasn’t wrong to be cautious...but the level of distrust still cut.
After about a week or so spent developing a stronger bond with your new squad mates, as the time for another feed drew closer, you decided to confide in some of your concerns with Petra regarding Captain Levi--that you felt you might have made a bad impression on him early on and wanted a way to thaw some of the ice between you two that wouldn’t look like bribery or like you were trying to kiss ass. You’d tossed a couple ideas around, already reassuring her that you were already intending to let time tell and let your own personality and abilities do most of the work, but that the chill was getting a little too uncomfortable on your end for you to keep going without making some kind of first step.
With an upcoming holiday and a debate about the best approach, you’d eventually settled on putting together a small gift of personalized tea blends. Since you didn’t have anything mature in your garden for black tea, you had to go into town to get missing ingredients, going with Petra to get her opinion on the best leaves, best tea bags, any additions that you didn’t have in your garden back with the Scouts or that hadn’t matured enough to use anything from it yet like your rosebush. After you had all of your materials, you’d headed back to HQ and stowed yourselves away in the kitchen to get to work.
Petra had the idea to make a couple different variations--there would be plain black tea, of course, but you’d also had some personal blends that you two decided on, mostly based off of Petra’s experience making Levi his tea when asked to, and her past observations of the few times he’d added something to it. You would have to divide and label the different teas in the container, but it would make it a little more personal.
However, you got her attention when you brought out the white sage, gloved hands grinding the herb up into a fine powder with a mortar and pestle.
“What’s that for?” she asked with a slight frown, watching you intently grinding at the white sage to make sure it was all powder and there weren’t any chunks left.
“I’m going...to add a light dusting of the white sage over the tea bags. Hopefully not enough to alter the taste, but it will still be in there,” you murmured, covered fingers running through the powder to check how fine you’d made it.
“I know there’s superstitions about white sage cleansing of evil and bad spirits, but I know the Captain isn’t, and you didn’t take me for the superstitious type. I just figured you had a fancy taste in tea,” Petra mused. You almost snorted, but stopped yourself short considering you were currently directly over the powdered sage and didn’t want it to go everywhere.
“While I’m sure the superstitious intent of cleansing and warding off evil adds a bit more personal good intent, the short version is that it’s also supposed to do wonders for your health. At least according to that book that’s still stashed in my desk,” you chuckled.
“I didn’t know that...a fine addition, then. You really pay attention to that herbology book of yours,” Petra quipped with a friendly smile, which you returned before setting the white sage aside for later, when your tea bags were finished.
Though only you would know it, if he kept the tea and used it frequently--which was fairly likely with how much tea he drank--then he would have white sage in his system frequently. That alone would protect him substantially from any other vampires lurking in the darkness. You couldn’t predict the actions of other vampires, especially with how impulsive they could sometimes be, but if you were this deep in the Scouts, you would rather be safe than sorry, especially if someone with ill intentions managed to work their way in.
Sure, white sage helped with general health, but the real reason you were adding it was for your own peace of mind to help protect Captain Levi. Why not take the opportunity to do so now that it had presented itself. If you were in the position to, you would give similar gifts of secret protection to more than just him, but you only had so much white sage, and right now, he was the one you had an excuse to do this for.
Now you just had to hope he would accept it.
*Levi’s POV*
As much as Erwin had a point about being able to keep a closer eye on L/N by having her in his squad, Levi was finding the arrangement to be...complicating. The way she presented herself, interacted with the others, the hard work she was putting in, he kept finding himself softening towards her because of it. She was a good soldier who truly put in the effort and then some, and she was quickly growing on the rest of the team. She was observant and thoughtful, and she paid close attention to the needs and preferences of the people around her. She wasn’t boastful or arrogant, and apparently was trying to learn something from every member of the squad. Petra had already taken her in like the natural mother hen she was and was around her quite often, but L/N could be seen around the others as well, just not as much.
For fuck’s sake, she’d even befriended his goddamn horse--he’d caught her in the stables sneaking him some oats and getting playfully nuzzled in return. From her track record, he knew she had to have put in the effort for that to happen, too, considering the horses started off at least spooked by her.
But he knew she was hiding something. He couldn’t ignore the signs he’d picked up on until now, how she dodged the personal and tried to keep her past hidden and buried, couldn’t forget the smell of the Underground and blood on her cape, her lack of a past, her unexplained, effortless natural skills, the regular sneaking out to do who knew what. Maybe it wasn’t as insidious as he kept thinking it might be, maybe he should ease up a bit instead of freezing her out and treating her like an already convicted traitor. But he couldn’t shake this feeling that whatever she was hiding was far from innocent, and he didn’t want to risk the betrayal, or getting his squad any more mixed up in it than they already were.
Though how well they were starting to take to her and how she was already being included into the fold, he was starting to get the sense that he was on a time limit before uncovering her as a traitor or something else terrible would cause unexpected damage.
Of course, he could take the paranoid route and assume that it was all clever, carefully planned movements, actions, and words meant to manipulate everyone around her into trusting her and letting their guards down. Unfortunately, not only was that extremely paranoid, but she didn’t lack the sincerity behind much of what she did like certain psychopaths he’d met in the past. She was very clearly hiding things, and she knew she was being watched, but her sincerity didn’t ring hollow because of it.
Fuck, he hated being in this position. And he really hated that he’d agreed to Erwin’s idea to put him in this situation. Even he knew he was being especially cold to her as if it would help put some distance between himself and the warm individual who was working her ass off for him and his squad in case the worst happened. If he was wrong, though, and what she was hiding wasn’t as malicious as he felt it might be, then he was going to have a lot of reparations to deal with going forward, especially since she was already on the fast track to be a part of his squad for a long time moving forward so long as she continued to survive the expeditions.
It would be so much easier if she just came clean. They wouldn’t have to do all this back and forth, cat and mouse, and they could move on. Unfortunately, even though she knew she was being watched and Levi was suspicious, she wasn’t saying anything beyond that comment she’d made the night before the expedition. Just another reason to believe whatever she was hiding was ugly.
There was a knock on his door, and his gaze flickered up to the shut door across from his desk, a faint frown on his face and Erwin’s findings about L/N spread out in front of him as he was in the middle of contemplating next moves.
“What?” he asked, squinting slightly at the door.
“It’s Y/N L/N. May I come in, Captain?”
Instinctively, Levi covered the documents he’d been looking at with anything that didn’t have to do with her, from supply shortage lists, reports from Hange and Erwin about the Scouts in general, anything but what he was looking at about her, knowing she had a sharp eye and not wanting to risk her seeing just how much he was aware of.
“Fine, come in,” Levi muttered, arm lying against the desk as the door opened after he spoke, and L/N came in hesitantly, something in hand.
A delivery, then. It was too much to hope she’d come to finally confess her secret to put an end to their unspoken chase. A pity.
As she approached, Levi noticed that she was rather fidgety, obviously nervous or at least a little embarrassed, and she was clutching the tin box in her hand rather rightly. What the hell was this about that suddenly she was a nervous cadet instead of the relatively calm and steady individual he’d been chasing secrets over up until now?
And then he remembered what day it was.
You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me...
As understanding lit up in his eyes, he held up a hand. “If this is an attempt at a bribe, L/N--”
“It’s not,” she said firmly, and Levi had to give credit to the balls she had to cut him off like that. She didn’t even seem to regret it, plowing forward before he could start down the path of rejection again.
“It’s a gift, no strings attached or anything like that. Petra and I put it together, it’s for the holiday...and it’s also partially a thank you, on my part,” she said before taking a deep breath, setting the box down on his desk neatly on a clean space front and center before stepping away. “I know I haven’t made the best impression, and you didn’t have to put me with your squad in any capacity, but you did, and I intend to make sure it’s not something you end up regretting.”
It seemed they were both well aware of the game they were trapped in, and she was well aware of her position. He had to give her credit for not bolting, if she knew the position she was in and how much scrutiny she was under. Either she didn’t feel what she had to hide was that serious, which wasn’t likely with how hard she was trying to hide it, or she was that confident in her abilities to keep the truth hidden.
He still wasn’t sure he could entirely believe that this wasn’t a bribe, though. It could very easily be taken as one, or at least a thinly veiled attempt to get him to like her--or at least not be as cold with her. And she’d involved Petra. It was almost like she’d name dropped the other woman in order to prevent him from immediately rejecting the gift, because it wasn’t just her that had put effort into it.
Levi stared her up and down intently, eyes narrowed slightly out of suspicion as he tried to gauge her intentions and sincerity. After a few tense moments where she simply endured his piercing stare without so much as a tremble--there was the collected individual he’d seen up until now--he looked away, down at the papers across his desk.
“If that’s all, you can go,” he said bluntly as a way of dismissal. She was lucky he wasn’t telling her to take it back. He wasn’t openly accepting it, either, he was still going to decide what to do with it, but he wasn’t sending it back with her, either.
It was the closest she was going to get to accepting a gift right now.
L/N snapped a salute, apparently deciding it was better not to say anything and to just take the semi-win and leave. Once the door shut behind her, Levi waited a few more moments before he put the random papers he’d grabbed back where they belonged, pulling the tin close so he could get a look at what was inside now that she’d left.
Opening the tin, the fragrance that escaped immediately told him what the gift was--black tea, but a variety of different blends. And it was good tea, too, if the scent was anything to go by. Groups of the tea bags were sectioned off, labeled by the variant they were, such as the one blend that included lemon, or the one that seemed to have blackberries in it. The tea bags were definitely homemade, telling him the blends were specially made by her and Petra, thought going into the ingredients. There was a white powder dusted over all the tea bags that turned out to be white sage upon closer inspection.
An odd choice...especially since it was on every tea bag and not certain blends.
The wild thought crossed his mind that they might be poisoned, and he scowled, attempting to brush aside the paranoia with the thought that it would be far too bold and obvious of a move, especially with Petra helping put it together. He doubted she would have been able to get such a thing past Petra, too, considering the woman’s experience making Levi’s tea.
I’m going fucking crazy, he thought to himself as, despite his rationalization, he pulled out one of the tea bags and started methodically pulling it apart piece by piece to make sure there wasn’t anything fatal slipped into the homemade blend. He made sure to avoid touching it as little as possible so it was still usable when he was done, shifting through the ingredients in the blend and making sure he recognized every one.
Nothing suspicious about it. Aside from the odd choice of white sage.
If it really was meant to be a bribe, though, did he want to take it? He didn’t want to waste the tea, so he wasn’t going to just throw it out. He could re-gift it to Hange or Erwin, but he knew that would be a slight, and L/N hadn’t been the only one to make it--Petra had helped.
Dammit…
He’d just have to let it sit there until he could figure out what he was going to do with it. He could speculate on conspiracy theories about what it was meant to be, if it really was anything more than a gift, until he figured out how he was going to handle it.
It really could be what she said, though--a gift for the holidays and a thank you, maybe even a peace offering in the hopes things wouldn’t continue to be so tense between them. The contention would continue, though, until he found out what she was hiding.
Levi settled back into what he’d been doing before she came to his office, looking over the details Erwin had provided him, a small frown on his face as he looked over official documents and police reports that were roughly forty years old about a double homicide in the town that had spawned local legends and horror stories to frighten children. Why was this included in the report Erwin gave him? One of the two victims was the girl that L/N shared a first name with, the only thing resembling a tangible connection to the town she claimed as her hometown that Erwin could find.
He was going to have to talk to Erwin and try to get a day or two off so he could go investigate in person. He needed more information than what was in these reports, and he would only find what he wanted by going there in person.
Once more, there was a knock on the door, this time followed immediately by a familiar voice calling, “Captain?”
Ah, this was a meeting he’d been waiting for.
“You can come in, Petra,” he called, finally putting away Erwin’s reports in a safe place as Petra entered the room and headed for Levi’s desk. She didn’t bother asking why he asked her to meet him, simply took a seat and waited for him to speak.
“What do you think about our new member?” Levi asked after he got settled in his seat. Petra’s surprised eyes wandered to the gift still sitting on the desk, a questioning look in her eyes even though she complied to answering his question.
“Do you mean in skills or compatibility?” Petra asked for clarification after a moment’s hesitation.
“Compatibility.”
He was already well aware of her skills--she wouldn’t have even been placed as an aid in the squad if she didn’t have skills to become one of the elite. Skill was one of the first things he looked at when choosing squad members.
Petra seemed even more confused that he was asking after her personality more than anything, but again, she didn’t question him.
“She’s quiet and reserved, for the most part, but after spending a couple weeks with her, once you manage to get her to open up she has a warm and caring personality. She’s a little socially timid, though, I’m sure you’ve noticed; like she’s thinking of how she should act before she does or says something. At least at first, before she gets more comfortable and gets into the flow of conversation.”
Petra paused to consider, a small frown on her face. “She’s a creature of habit, that’s for sure--she’s always wearing the same necklace, all the time--I’ve never seen her without it, and there’s certain places she’s always at during certain times of the day. I’m a little worried about her health, though. I didn’t notice it at first, but she hardly seems to eat. She doesn’t get much on her plate, and she’s always smuggling things that are safe for horses to eat to the stables to bribe the horses instead of eating it herself. She doesn’t seem affected, not yet anyway, but I’m still worried about it.”
Taking the mental notes for later in case that information proved important, Levi pressed a little further. “What about the others? It seems like she’s fitting in well.”
Petra nodded. “She’s getting lessons of some kind from almost everyone, and she’s been a lot better about being social. She’s making a genuine effort to be a part of the squad, and to be perfectly honest, I like having her around.”
“Anything else?”
Petra’s gaze flickered over to the box sitting on the desk again. “If it’s not too presumptuous, Captain--I don’t know what impression she made when you two first met. She mentioned it may not have been the best first impression, but...she really is trying to be worth the chance she’s been given to be a part of this squad, and her attempts appear genuine to me. Perhaps give her another chance to make a better impression.”
Levi didn’t answer her, and he kept his expression unreadable so she wouldn’t see his reaction to her words. It was more incentive for him to close this messy chapter, and it helped clear up his thoughts on how to act going forward if this secret didn’t turn out to be something crazy like treason or murder.
“Thank you, Petra. You can go, now,” Levi finally answered in an indifferent voice. Petra got up and gave a quick salute, then quietly left the room without any further comment. Once she was gone, Levi got to his feet with a slight sigh.
He needed to see Erwin.
Physical Fatality Part 12- Grief
18+ Hawks x fem, pro hero!reader
Summary: You’re a rising star in All Might’s agency. Hawks is the darling of Endeavor’s. By virtue of your job descriptions, the two of you are supposed to hate each other, or at the very least be cautiously neutral. For a long time that’s exactly what the two of you did. You stayed out of each other’s way and formed little opinion of the other. One fateful night at an HPSC gala changes all that. Based on the album Hopeless Fountain Kingdom by Halsey.
This story will have multiple NSFW parts so it is 18+ ONLY minors dni
Masterlist Ko-fi
Over the course of your relationship Hawks has seen you pissed off quite a bit. He’s seen you mildly annoyed, he’s seen you decently irritated, and he’s seen you practically rabid with rage. He is intimately familiar with the spectrum of your anger.
And yet all of those times combined cannot compare to the level of rage he sees in you now.
Red Riot, who Hawks now realizes must have arrived with you, rushes to Bakugo’s side to check on him. Only once you’re positive Hawks and Bakugo won’t lunge at each other again do you unceremoniously drop Hawks to the ground. “What the fuck is your problem?” you demand as you storm over to him. “Look I’m sorry but-“ he starts but you don’t let him finish. “There shouldn’t be a ‘but’ in that sentence Hawks why the fuck are you fighting Bakugo of all people? You could’ve killed him!” “Technically he could’ve killed me too, let’s not make him sound helpless.” “That is NOT the point Hawks.” “Right yea no, of course it isn’t. Look I’m sorry things got out of hand but-” “Out of hand? OUT OF HAND? Your lack of self awareness is genuinely fucking phenomenal my GOD.” “Christ will you fucking listen to me instead of cutting me off every fucking time I try to speak?” “You don’t get to make demands right now! You know all this shit reflects back on me!” “Right your precious fucking reputation.” “Yes! My job relies on it remember!” “Could you forget about All Might and the press and whatever else for one goddamn minute? Our relationship is fucking drowning in it!” “What fucking relationship? I don’t even know what the fuck this is anymore.” “What are you on about now?” “We’re not lovers Hawks! We’re just strangers with the same damn hunger to be touched, to be loved, to feel anything at all and it’s gotten genuinely pathetic now.” “Pathetic?” “Yes pathetic! Because clearly we aren’t supposed to be together!” “Says who?” “Look around you Hawks! Apparently fucking everyone and everything!”
Your words seem to echo around the two of you, both of your chests heaving in the wake of the argument. Both of you had forgotten yourselves for a moment and as awareness creeps back in you suddenly can feel the eyes of every reporter and civilian in the area boring into you. “What are you saying (y/n)?” Hawks asks and his voice is heartbreakingly quiet, hands clenched into fists. “I’m saying this is done,” you reply. “Don’t do this, please, I love you and-“ “No you don’t Hawks. You might think you do but you don’t. We love love and the idea of it and for fleeting moments between the arguments and the press and our bosses and everything else we thought we had it but we don’t. Or at least it’s not strong enough to out weigh everything else. I’m sorry,” you sigh before turning away. Cameras flash and reporters shout questions but you ignore them all as you walk over to where Kirishima is helping Bakugo up off the ground. “(Y/n)-“ Bakugo starts to say but you cut him off. “Don’t. I’ll deal with you after we get you patched up,” you tell him before you and Kirishima start walking him back to your agency.
Hawks stares after you, feeling frozen in place as you leave him behind and take his shattered heart with you. “Told you so,” Monoma suddenly taunts from beside him. Hawks jumps, having not noticed when Monoma had come down from the building’s rooftop. Hawks whirls around to face him, grabbing hold of the collar of his shirt. “Ah, ah, ah, don’t you think you’ve done enough damage?” Monoma asks cheekily, jerking his head towards the still flashing cameras. Hawks’ grip tightens momentarily before releasing the other man. Unfortunately Monoma has a point and Hawks really isn’t eager to make things even harder for you. “Don’t worry bird boy, I’ll invite you to our wedding,” Monoma tells the other man before flouncing away, pleased with himself. Hawks tells himself the best he can do now is wait for you to calm down and talk to you then so without another word and before he can do anything else to worsen the situation, he takes off back to Endeavor’s agency and hopes the others from the task force will have good news to share.
The first words he hears when he walks into the meeting room on the top floor are “You’re a fucking idiot” from none other than Shoto Todoroki himself. “I really don’t want to talk about it,” Hawks sighs. “You’re the only one. Pretty much every gossip blog and news outlet ever is talking about it,” Tokoyami tells him. “Headlines are all about how (y/n) is rubbing off on you in the worst possible ways and speculating about your break up,” Midoriya adds in, an unspoken accusation buried beneath his faux neutral tone. “We didn’t break up, she’s just upset,” Hawks denies, desperate to be right. “Really? Looked like a break up to me and the thousands of people who’ve already read the articles and the few dozen people that watched this whole train wreck you started,” Shoto quips. “Can we please just focus on the mission? Please tell me you got good intel,” Hawks sighs. “Since some of us are capable of doing our job, yes. Luckily for you the terror group is in the building we were watching and since you and Kacchan drew so much attention to the other building they think we’re way off base in our search for them. We should be able to make a move by this weekend,” Midoriya informs him. “Great. What now?” Hawks replies. “Now we wait to move out and I go back to my agency to reassure my probably panicked best friend,” Midoriya bites out before handing the last of his operation notes to Shoto and storming out.
“Jesus, I thought Deku was a puppy,” Hawks remarks as the door slams closed. “Midoriya’s always been scary when he wants to be, he’s just also very genuinely kind,” Tokoyami shrugs. “Which is exactly why being on his bad side is a nightmare,” Shoto points out. “Thanks Shoto. Really making me feel better.” “I wasn’t trying to make you feel better. In fact you should feel bad.” “I’m gonna call her,” Hawks sighs as he pulls out his phone to dial your number. The first call rings for awhile before going to voicemail. So does the second. The third is sent straight to voicemail. The fourth doesn’t even go through as he’s promptly alerted his number has been blocked. Hawks swears and tosses his phone onto the table in frustration. “I must have really crossed the line,” he sighs. “You think?” Shoto asks with a raised eyebrow.
“For the record I threw the first punch,” Bakugo admits somewhat sheepishly as you dab at one of several cuts he sustained during the fight. “Unprovoked?” “Obviously not.” “Then it doesn’t change anything. And you’re not off the hook either, what the fuck were you thinking?” you question as you start bandaging him up. “I don’t know, Monoma was being a little shit which got Hawks all worked up and then I tried to get him to back down and we both got worked up and well... you know how that went,” he admits. He watches as your phone lights up again with Hawks’ contact info. You grab it, sending him to voicemail again before blocking his number and putting your phone back down. “Are you sure about breaking up with him?” Bakugo asks and you can tell by how uncharacteristically gentle his voice is that he’s concerned. “I.... don’t know. In a perfect world I’d love to take the time to unpack all of this bullshit and work it out with him. I already know I’ll miss him. I’ll miss the mornings with him laying in my bed and the thought of a forever him and me but I bet all he’ll miss is my body,” you confess. “Don’t you think you’re not giving him enough credit?” “Probably. But I can’t sit at home and be his housewife which means I have to focus on salvaging my career. I’m lucky All Might is out of the office, gives me time to try and think up a sales pitch.” “You’re a good hero (y/n). All Might knows that.” “He also knows he gave me an ultimatum,” you point out. You finish off bandaging Bakugo up and he looks as if he’s about to say something else but you resume talking before he can. “I’m going to head home and lie low. Hopefully I’ll still be employed next time you see me,” you sigh before giving Bakugo’s shoulder an affectionate squeeze and walking out.
The video of you and Hawks’ break up is already viral by the time you get back to your apartment.
You walk straight past the living room, completely ignoring your concerned roommates, and head right into your room. Your phone alerts you to several no doubt concerned texts from Midoriya but you ignore them all as you collapse onto your bed. You lie there for awhile, letting your phone ping almost incessantly with concern from your friends and all the news alerts mentioning your name. When your ringtone cuts through all the other alerts you almost ignore it, assuming it’s Midoriya calling to check on you. Your heart sinks when All Might’s name flashes on the screen instead. You take a deep breath, stubbornly ignoring the way it rattles in your chest, and then answer the phone. “(Y/n)....” All Might starts. “I know,” you answer. “We had a deal.” “I’m a good hero. You know I am.” “I know you are. But we had a deal. I’m sorry.”
Numb.
Achingly,
Heart wrenchingly,
World endingly,
Numb.
That’s how you feel as you listen to All Might continue to justify his decision without actually hearing a word he’s saying. You vaguely register apologies and talk of the agency’s reputation, but for the most part you’re too busy feeling your entire universe crashing down around you to pay much attention to his words. You don’t know how long it’s been when you finally register that he’s been calling your name. “(Y/n)! Are you alright?” All Might presses. You don’t answer. You hang up your phone, face still blank, as Denki and Mina appear in your doorway. They both look you over for a long moment before wordlessly climbing onto your bed to join you. They cuddle up on either side of you and only once you’re safely wrapped up in their arms do you finally allow yourself to break. You mourn the career you worked so hard for as sobs wrack through your body. Your chest and ribs burn with the force of it but the feeling is nothing compared to the bitter grief of losing your job. As your friends hold you, you utter only one heartbreaking phrase between sobs:
“What am I if not a hero?”
Author’s Note: 🥲 we’re getting close to the end game now everyone, and boy oh boy does it hurt
“I won’t do anything. Probably.” (BSD OdaSaku x Reader. Part 1/3)
Title: “I won’t do anything. Probably” Genre: Comedy/Romance/smut Rating: Part 1 is sfw BUT Part 3 will 18+ (aka nsfw) Reader-insert is written as afab/femme/shorter than OdaSaku and 20+ Plot: You are a member of the Port Mafia who has been sent on a “cleanup” job with Oda Sakunosuke, who you have a crush on but won’t admit it. You don’t finish the job until very late at night, at which point, you’re forced to check into a hotel. But there’s just one problem: There’s only one room left. And only one bed.
Mini Fic is written in 2nd person. AO3 link for fic: HERE
Inspired by the [OdaSaku] art of Tsumugi (@tumugi1 on Twitter). I saw this picture and my brain latched onto the whole, “I won’t do anything. Probably.” bit. And wrote a whole fic for it as I was falling asleep on the 24th and amazingly, KEPT writing it when I woke up on the 25th. So, here it is. Call it a belated Xmas gift bc it feels almost like Old Saint Nick dropped it into my head like a filthy piece of coal.
“You’re kidding me.”
The guy at the front desk shakes his head apologetically.
“I’m so sorry, ma’am,” he mumbles, clearly looking every bit as remorseful as he sounds.
He shoots another nervous look at the gun holstered on your hip before catching himself and quickly looking back into your eyes.
He gulps.
Audibly.
“But there really aren’t any more rooms.”
You sigh and take your arm off of the counter. You’d considered draping it over the receptionist’s monitor in an effort to look more intimidating, but when you’d realized your arms were a little too short for that, you’d settled for the counter instead. Luckily for you, though, that one simple motion had been enough to reveal your gun.
Even now, the receptionist looked like he was going to pee himself, but even though your intimidation attempt had been successful, it still hadn’t gotten you the results you wanted.
Oh, well.
At least Nakahara-senpai would be proud of the way you’d conducted yourself just now.
The man you were with, however...
“Well?” you call out, tilting your head back slightly to look at him. “You heard what he said. What do you think we should do?”
You frown.
“Oda-senpai?”
The tall redhead looks up from his phone at last.
“Well, that depends,” he said, sliding his phone back into his pocket.
His sapphire-blue eyes find yours.
“How tired are you?” he asks.
You stop stifling your yawn immediately.
Today was a weird day. Even by your standards. And you were a teenaged runaway who’d gotten picked up by the Port Mafia several years ago.
Ever since that fateful day when you’d made the stupid decision to steal from that convenience store (how were you supposed to know a dump like that was a front for the Port Mafia?), they’d taken you in, given you a place to stay and a purpose. And that purpose was “doing whatever the hell it was they wanted you to do.”
Today, that was one of their infamous “clean-up” jobs.
You’d been on these sorts of jobs before so you didn’t think of it as a big deal at the time. But then they’d handed you the list. Which was a lot longer than it usually was. And then, they’d given you the location.
You hadn’t been sent this far out of Yokohama since that one time Nakahara Chuuya himself had requested you for backup. And even then, it had been an exception. Unfortunately, unlike that time, today’s job wasn’t quick. In fact, it had taken far, far longer than you had expected and you’d ended up working until late into the night.
So late into the night that all the trains back to Yokohama had long since stopped running.
And then it started pouring.
You are now effectively stranded for the night.
You sigh.
There was one bright spot...
You eye the man standing across the lobby, who takes his phone back out one more time in hopes of locating a cell signal.
At least they’d sent Oda Sakunosuke along with you.
“I’m okay,” you say, ignoring the fact that you’d just been yawning not two seconds ago. “Really.”
“Uh-huh,” Oda responds, his bright blue eyes flicking away from his phone once more to scan your face. “So you’re not here to see if you can find a place to rest for the night? You just wanted to get out of the rain until the first train comes?”
It doesn’t quite come across as sarcastic but you’re really not sure what else to call his tone. Humorless, perhaps? It’s hard to tell. Oda is pretty stoic on a normal day and you’ve almost never seen him smile. For one wild moment, you begin to wonder if he’s actually teasing you.
But then you remember you are talking to Oda Sakunosuke.
This is nothing more than a simple, honest question.
He puts his phone away and approaches the counter.
“Either way, walking into this hotel wasn’t a bad idea,” he says, reaching into one of the many pockets in his pale, yellow coat. “I wasn’t exactly looking forward to camping under a bridge in this weather.”
You note the big, muddy footprints his shoes leave in his wake.
The receptionist behind the counter can clearly see them but he looks like he’s still too scared to say anything about it.
Oda leans onto the counter next to you.
“I think we should stay here,” he says. “There’s no way we’re getting back to Yokohama any time soon and besides...”
He lets out a massive yawn. You think you can see a tear glistening in the corner of his eye.
“I’m tired too.”
“But you heard what he said,” you press, as the receptionist jerks away from you (and your gun). “There’s only one room.”
“Yeah, so that means there is a place we can take a nap here,” he says, already pulling out his wallet. “And the fact that there’s only one room here means we can save some money. I know what it means for those of us who get sent out on jobs like this.”
He picks out a card.
“It means we can stand to save a few bucks. Anyway, don’t worry about it.”
He lays the slate-gray piece of plastic against the counter.
“I’ll pay for tonight, okay?”
For a moment, you’re struck speechless.
“Th-that’s not the problem,” you stutter.
Oda just looks at you.
“So, then what is?”
You wonder if one of the hits he’d taken on today’s job had actually done something to his brain.
How could he not see it?
Having a man pay for your hotel room was already bad enough. But the implications of a tall, broad-shouldered, sexy man like Oda Sakunosuke paying for a shared a hotel room with you??
You swallow dryly, hoping against hope that your cell phone wasn’t bugged and that if it was, there was no signal here.
If word got out that you spent the night in a cheap hotel with Oda Sakunosuke, a man who had the kind of rugged charm that would put Clint Eastwood to shame, you would never hear the end of it. You could already see Ozaki Kouyou smirking at you from behind one long pink kimono sleeve the minute you got back to headquarters.
And “I’ll pay for it tonight” he says?!!
As if this whole thing couldn’t SEEM any more suspicious!
You shoot a menacing glare at the receptionist, as if to say “don’t you dare get any ideas.” But the message appears to go right over his head when he sinks just a little further below the counter in abject fear.
“The problem is,” you elaborate, stunned that you even have to say it out loud. “That we’d be sleeping. In the same room.”
Oda continues to just look at you.
“So?”
You make up your mind to ask the Boss to check Oda for brain damage when you get back tomorrow. Mori used to be a doctor, right?
Oda sighs.
“Listen,” he says, sliding his card towards the receptionist, nodding kindly to the young man as if he were a timid baby bird instead of a grown human being. “I know what you’re thinking. And I thought about it too.”
He what?!
Without meaning to, you flush but Oda doesn’t appear to take any notice.
“But it’ll be fine. No matter how you look at it, we’re clearly just a couple of colleagues--”
“Clearly??”
“--who got stranded away from home while out on a business trip,” he finishes, taking his card back from the trembling receptionist. “So, like I said. It’ll be fine. I mean, we’re just sleeping right? We’re both responsible adults. I think we can handle just sleeping next to each other in the same room.”
He looks at you.
“Don’t you?”
You stiffen. Your eyes dart to the key card on the counter that the receptionist is now inching further and further away from. You’d think it was radioactive from the way he was acting...
“I--”
Oda raises an eyebrow.
“Unless...”
Oda inclines his head back towards the windows, where you can now see the rain lashing against the thick glass in the gale.
“You want to camp out under a bridge? Because if you do, I can go with you--”
“No, I definitely don’t,” you tell him, sweeping the key card up in one hand.
Out of the corner of your eye, you watch the receptionist take another step away from you as you move. You roll your eyes.
“Let’s just go. It’s late, it’s raining, we’re both tired and you know what, you’re right. As long as you stay in your bed, on your side of the room, I don’t think we’re going to have a problem.”
And as you march down the hallway towards the elevators, you suddenly hear the receptionist calling after you.
“Ah, wait!”
The young man suddenly sounds alarmed.
“There’s only--”
“Hah?”
You turn and shoot him a look and he immediately clams up again, quailing behind the counter.
“N-never mind,” he mumbles, twiddling his fingers as he tries (unsuccessfully) not to look at your gun.
He shoots you a watery smile.
“H-Have a pleasant stay...”
The Killing Cure (Part 7)
“Alright, first things first, we have to dice some potatoes!” Ethan declares.
She thinks that he is enjoying this; a taste of the domesticy that had been stolen so early from him. She doesn’t understand it at all really--the appeal of cooking. He throws terms and phrases that mean nothing to her, ‘drain the potatoes in a colander!’ ‘whisk the mayo with…!’ ‘then we’ll toss the potatoes and mayo mixture!’ The only thing that she would like to toss is the bowl; she would like to toss it across the room. But she doesn’t wish to startle her napping girls, lest they burst into three separate clouds of frenzied flies. Neither does she want to clean eggs and potato off of her walls.
“The eggs, Alcina!” He instructs, pointing at the eggs that he had previously scrambled. “Pour them into the bowl with the celery, and onions!” She isn’t sure why they can’t just toss the potatoes in now as well.
The man hums as he tosses sprinkles of celery salt and pickle relish into his own bowl. His enthusiasm is almost enduring. She can’t help but wonder how many times he has done this with his Mia. He glances at her and narrows his eyes, “you haven’t started tossing the eggs and onions!”
She doesn’t want to tell him that she doesn’t know what he means. Instead she says, “my hands are aching.”
He nods, “are they aching too much to whisk the mayo?” More to himself he hums, “the medication should have kicked in by now, maybe we should get you more…”
“I am fine, Winters. Just, show me how to whisk the mayo.”
“Of course!” He declares. “Now usually when Mia and I do this we have some cooking tunes playing but you don’t have a radio.”
“I have a record player…”
“Great, where is it?”
“Bela,” She calls to the closest girl. “Be a dear and start the record player, nothing loud.”
“Great! Whisking is pretty simple” He replies. She doesn’t expect him to reach over and take her by the wrist. She is grateful that he is too preoccupied to catch the slight flush of her cheeks. With a few more trivial instructions, he guides her hand along. “Do you think that you have a feel for it?”
“You could have spoken your instructions.” She says stiffly. “I understand now.”
Unperturbed, he replies. “Good. So finish that and then we can mix all of the ingredients and put it in the...you have a fridge, right? Tell me that you have a fridge!”
She clears her throat, “I do not.”
“Oh no!” He runs his fingers through his hairline. “Dammit! Okay, that’s fine...we’ll just stick it outside and hope that the birds don’t steal it.”
She watches him take the bowls and toss them all into the largest of them. He puts a lid over it and shakes it well. She hates that it is such a good distraction, that it makes her feel significantly better to watch him flounce around her kitchen. She wants to blame it fully on the medication and the supplements kicking in but deep down she knows that she can’t quite do that. There is a warmth in the castle, the castle hasn’t felt comfortable in a very long while. And the smell is rather pleasant, fresh and quite tasty.
She thinks that she would like the feeling to remain; this kinder, more mundane feeling. For once nothing hurts. For once, however brief the moment will be, she doesn’t dwell on her predicament. Just beneath the surface, a part of her wonders what her life would have been like without the cadou. She holds her hand to her torso, to the one scar that never healed.
.oOo.
With less pain and a decent meal, Alcina is significantly less cranky. “Well?”
“Well, what?”
“Did you like the salad?” Ethan asks.
“It was…” She trailed off. “Not horrid.”
He supposes that, ‘not horrid’ is a start. “I guess I should head out and start the hunt…” He strokes his chin. Truth be told he isn’t particularly thrilled by the prospect, not when a hoard of monstrosities seem to be waiting for him in the shadows. “Want to come?”
“I’m in no condition for a hunt.” Her expression dims. “Do you think I’d be sending a foolish man thing like yourself to do it if I could?” And then her expression goes absolutely dark. He doesn’t quite catch it but he thinks that he hears her murmur something about being useless. He isn’t sure if she is calling him more names of if she is speaking of herself. The quietness of the remark has him inclined to guess the latter.
“I just...could use…” the company. He struggles to come up with something else to say, lest she get the wrong idea. “ I could use someone to keep an eye out. Ya know for lycans and stuff.”
She gives a haughty sniff, and seems to shed a few layers of doubt. “They’d be fools to come by my castle unannounced!”
He has to chuckle; it would seem that she is getting at least some of her vigor and dramatics back. “I can teach you to use a gun.” He offers. Maybe then she’ll stop sulking and pouting. Maybe then he can move on in good conscience. “It’s not that hard, all you have to do is.” He loads the gun and fires a shot. The shatter of glass echos about the room.
She flinches, lip twitching in annoyance. “Not in my castle!”
He clenches his teeth in a cringe. “Yeeeah, I can teach you during the hunt.” He hands her one of his pistols, a smaller one. One that she can get a comfortable grip on. God, he must be as big a fool as she says that he is to give her a gun that she can so easily turn on him. That is, after he teaches her to use it. For now she turns it over in her hand, staring at it as though it will fire itself.
She follows him into the forest, “one perk of being smaller,” he says as they walk. “Is that you’re more inconspicuous. You can sneak up on your prey.” She can so long as she is more graceful than he. So far, he is under the impression that she is. She slips between trees with ease. She doesn’t have to bother ducking under branches nor moving them out of the way, neither does she make as much noise as she treks about.
This would be a wonderful thing, if only it didn’t instill a sort of fear within him. Somehow he still feels as though she will extend her claws and start swiping. Every now and then she slips away from him and his stomach lurches; claws or none, he doesn’t like it when she is not in his line of sight.
She emerges a moment later, “there is a deer over there.” He jolts at the sound of her voice. Christ, she is elusive now.
“H-how, are you so quiet?” He knows the answer but inquires anyhow.
“Just shoot the deer, Winters or show me how to do it.”
“Right, of course. Deer. The animal.” He clarifies. “I’m not calling you dear.”
Lady Dimitrescu inhales and simply points in the direction of the deer. He wanders into the clearing. The deer she has come across is a rather decent size, at least enough to feed the five of them. He lifts his gun and fires his shot. It falls dead in an instant--at least his struggles with the lycans have some pay off. And in more ways than one--he sighs knowing that he will have to drag the deer carcass all the way back to the castle. At least he has built the stamina for it.
He turns around to reach for his knife and jerks. He doesn’t know when Lady Dimitrescu had appeared behind him, it is like she has emerged from thin air. He had very nearly shot her. He lowers his gun with a sigh of relief. “You need to stop doing that?”
“Doing what, Winters?”
“Jumping out at me!”
“I am just walking.”
“You aren’t as heavy anymore…”
The woman’s face colors.
“Th-that’s not how I meant it! I wasn’t trying to imply… he thinks that his cheeks might be a deeper red. She probably hadn’t even taken it that way until he made a big deal of it. “You’re a beautiful lady.” He blurts, now his entire face is red. “I didn’t mean! I mean, I do, I think that you’re not hideous or heavy…” He wishes that she would just tell him to shut the hell up so he can stop digging himself deeper.
.oOo.
Her face is so hot, she can’t remember the last time that she has felt so awkward and flustered. Frankly she isn’t sure if the scarlet on her face can be attributed to his careless comments on her weight or his remark that she is beautiful...not hideous? She isn’t even sure if she is being complimented.
She ponders it the entire way back to her castle, over dinner, and ponders it still as she dresses herself for bed. She picks up one of several night gowns. She resents that she loves the night gowns that he has chosen for her. The Duke, she reminds herself, probably chose it. He is acquainted with her tastes.
She holds the cloth against her frame. She just isn’t certain that she will love how it looks on her.
She pulls it over her head and smoothes the cloth over her body. It is, woefully, a size too big. She swallows as the sleeve slips down her shoulder. She grits her teeth and wraps her arms around herself, rubbing her own arms.
She doesn’t feel right. She doesn’t feel like herself. She slides down the wall and exhales deeply. Ethan had called her beautiful; she wishes that he hadn’t stumbled. Wishes that he hadn’t taken it back. She needs some sort of reassurance, never mind where it comes from.
Just where did she put her kiseru?
She hears a knock, it is the last sound that she wanted to hear. “You in there? Your daughters want a bedtime story.”
She sighs again and stands up. She unlocks the door without a word. She clears her throat, “thank you, I almost forgot.”
The Penultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny
Hey there, matted hair. We finally finished Teen Titans! Let's celebrate by reading something good for a while. And around here, you know our go-to for good comics, right? Something I enjoy, at least. And we've got only two issues left, so let's do this~
Here's the cover:
And what a cover it is! Our old running gag of Scary Chrysalis Face has returned to use one time more, for every major villain. And what a collection of villains! You got Tirek, Nightmare Moon, Chrysalis, Sombra, the Storm King, Daybreaker... Then comics villains like Cosmos, MalefiCelestia, and DeviLuna... And Ahuizotl is also a villain, I suppose! And... a random Diamond Dog? Sure! I guess. It kind of makes sense when you recall it's Spike telling this story. He must still be traumatised from that, like, season 1 episode~
Anyways, I suppose a little recap's in order! It's been a bit, after all. So, MLP season 10. It's a world-trekking experience, with various groups of friends heading out to make diplomatic contact with the remote kingdoms, like Zecora's homeland. Along the way, they discover that more lands than just Equestria housed their own Trees of Harmony, and have been powering them back up. In the bird kingdom, they learned a larger backstory, where the Knights of Harmony planted these trees and then disappeared. But with all the Trees active, the Knights might not be as gone as thought...
So Canterlot is about to come under attack, and Twilight dashes off to rally everypony. Mistmane and Fluttershy round up the innocent animals to keep them out of the way. Maud Pie and Starlight round up the also innocent Student Six to keep them out of the way. Pinkie Pie and Trixie evacuate the civilians. Starswirl, Cadance, and Discord set up a barrier. Somnambula, Stygian, and Sunburst do some research. Shining Armor rallies a team of guards with Big Macintosh, Tempest Shadow, and Rockhoof. And if that's not enough continuity, Spike's sending emergency letters to all the rest of their allies. This gonna be good~
Meanwhile, Mage Meadowbrook and the rest of the Mane Six are patching up Rainbow Dash, who did just fly halfway around the world and all. The lot of them who were out return, reporting everything's going to plan. Twilight's a little surprised they're so organised for once. That's when the ground starts to quake. The lot of them rush out to see what's going on, and some geysers also spring up. Shining Armor drops by, reporting that somepony's on the edge of the forcefield, requesting an audience from Twilight Sparkle. Alone. Even though it's potentially a trap, Twilight agrees, hoping for a resolution through talking.
Twilight greets the stranger, who turns out to be a large blue pony with a lion-like tri-colour mane. His name is Danu, and he's the leader of the Knights of Harmony. Twilight notes he doesn't look a thousand years old, and he gets all arrogant. "How little you understand." But if you know Twilight, she loves understanding and learning. She asks to understand, and Danu demands their Elements in exchange. But if you know your ponies, the Mane Six internalised the power of the Elements ages ago. They literally can't give them up if they wanted to. And Danu replies that now they understand why they have to die.
Our purple princess protests that there can still be cooperation, but Danu retorts that it was that sort of thinking that led to their own downfall centuries ago. And so their attack begins. Now, Cadance's forcefield spell is very impressive, and even they admit it. But--and this is always a big oversight--it doesn't extend to underground. Rookie mistake, Twilight. Danu uses magic to burrow them under the forcefield. With the perimeter breached, Shining Armor's group rushes in to stop them. The Knights disrobe, and we finally get a look at how weird they are.
Danu isn't just a pony, he's got a lion's hindquarters. Explains the mane, at least. The next one, a minotaur-like creature with a snake's lower half named Taranis, declares himself to be the Element of Pride, using wind powers to hold off the army. Then the bearer of the Element of Acceptance, who looks like a shark with a four-armed octopus for a head, uses her powers of water to blast the pegasi out of the air. Clearly the source of the geysers earlier. Danu himself says his Element is Loyalty, and uses earth powers to crack the ground and knock over the rest of the Canterlot soldiers.
After a big two-page spread of the battle, we turn over to Ceridwen, who we met last issue back in the bird kingdom. They're the Quetzalcoatl-looking one, and they use the Element of Equity's magic to shrink Big Macintosh. Balor, a dragon-looking biped, steals Shining Armor's magic with the Element of Magic, turning it around on his hoof-picked squad. And then we turn over to Morrigan, a mysterious ghostly bird-like creature who uses the Element of Faith. They can brainwash whoever they make eye contact with, and this ends up being Shining Armor and the whole Canterlot army.
Well, things ain't looking so good, huh? Twilight has managed to regroup with the rest of her friends (and Mage Meadowbrook is still here too). And it's a good thing, because when Twilight reports what the Knights want, Meadowbrook pipes up about the time that the Pillars also tapped the Elements for magic. And who else has used the Elements? The Student Six.
But before the lot of them can rush downstairs and check on the kids (who are still with Starlight, mind you, so pretty good protection), Danu calls them out to stand down, revealing the mind-controlled soldiers having surrounded some straggler civilians. And if they're all calm, maybe he can tell them a story now, which we'll have to hear next issue~
Came back on an exciting one, eh? This issue is mostly fight scene, but it’s a good one. It introduces each of the Knights of Harmony and reveals what they can do. It also shows our heroes as pretty competent, able to pull together a solid emergency plan in a short amount of time. It’s just not enough, due to the oversight of “just go under the fence”.
Next issue... Next issue will be our very last issue of the ongoing My Little Pony series. Get ready for an extra-sized finale~
Dragonfly - Chapter 5
JJ Maybank x female!reader series
Summary: Things are weird between you and JJ for a few days, but all is forgotten when he turns up on your doorstep, covered in bruises again
Word Count: 3k
Warnings: ANGST - mentions of abuse and death, injuries, maybe some swearing I cant remember
A/N: I love writing angst as I can relate to it so much more and it helped my mood today isn’t great but I hope the chapter flows well enough and people like it - and as always feedback is appreciated :) (little flashback in italics)
Catch up: Chapters 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 -
You woke up to the sun shining into your room, turning over you were met with empty space, you opened your eyes to see nothing where JJ had been laying the night before. You had agreed to go to John B’s together, why would he leave without telling you?
You sat up, not understanding why you felt so hurt at him leaving, you had helped him, and him you last night, but I guess now he was sober, he didn’t want your help. You couldn’t spend too much time thinking about this though, you needed a shower desperately and then you were still going to head to John B’s, whether JJ was there or not.
Only once you’d got into the shower, did your mind finally focus on the pain you felt in your arms, the one Rafe had grabbed now had a dark purple bruise covering a lot of the forearm, and the hand you had punched him with was also swollen and it ached. This was possibly the worst way you’d woken up in a while, but in all honesty you didn’t want to deal with your injuries or spend anymore time thinking about JJ. So you quickly finished your shower, wrapped a bandage around your hand, took some painkillers and got ready for the day ahead.
John B’s house was quiet when you got to it, most likely John B (and the others if they crashed there) were still asleep, and you didn’t want to wake them, so you made your way to the end of the dock where you sat and looked over at the water, lost in thought.
You had been looking out on a calm water, similar to the marsh you were looking at now, your mum at your side, sitting in silence whilst you both listened to the sounds of nature around you. The birds in the trees chirping their songs like they do every morning, the wind making its way through the trees, rustling the leaves as it went, and the early buzzing of the insects around you. This had been the lake where you’d had your moment with the dragonflies, it truly felt like a magical place to you, as if it was out of a fairy tale.
Your mum and you had spent many mornings like this, enjoying the calm before the day revealed what it had in store for you, it gave you a chance to breathe.
This particular morning, your mum had dragged you out of bed to go here with her, neither of you ever bothered getting your dad to come as he was the opposite of a morning person, and you kind of liked the ritual staying between the two of you.
You had been sat there for around 10 minutes before your mum started speaking, “No matter what happens in life never forget this place or what it means to us.”
You looked at her in confusion, “what?”
“Promise me, please, that you won’t forget this Y/N.” Her eyes seemed pained enough that you didn’t ask her anymore questions and said instead, “Of course I promise.”
At this response your mum had just wrapped her arm around you and kissed the top of your head, not realising you had felt a tear fall onto the same spot a moment later.
-
You were shaken from this memory when you heard someone call your name, their footsteps heading towards you. You cursed yourself for allowing your thoughts to move towards that memory, still not ready to face some of the pain you felt, especially in a place where someone could see, so with the footsteps getting closer you quickly wiped away the couple of tears that had fallen without you realising and turned to see John B approaching you.
You smiled at him, “Morning sunshine, how are you feeling today?”
“Better than expected actually,” he sat down next to you, “how about you? How’s the hand?”
“To be honest it aches a little,” you moved it in front of him, showing him the bandage, “but maybe worth it if Rafe feels worse this morning.”
He laughed, “God let’s hope so, I’m not sure his ego will easily recover from being hit by a girl in front of other people.”
You two fell into an easy silence for a minute or two before John B got up, clapping his hands together, “Right, I think it’s time we tried to wake up the others,” he held out a hand to help you up, “come on.”
You grabbed his hand with your good one and made your way back to the Chateau, falling back slightly when he first went inside, but you took a breath and went in.
The sight you saw made you smile, Pope was in an unnatural position asleep on the pullout with Kiara half off the other side, also sleeping peacefully.
John B was heading to what was probably the spare room, most likely for JJ, when you said to him, your voice hushed, “What’s the best way to wake them up without being killed?”
“No method I’ve ever tried has really worked so do what you want, but good luck and don’t let them kill you.”
You laughed, put your hand to your forehead and saluted him, “Yes sir.”
He was still laughing when he disappeared into the room, you looked down at the pair in front of you, assessing how you could wake them up. In the end you decided to risk their annoyance, as with the awkward way they’d been sleeping, there was room in the middle for you to jump.
You launched yourself onto the bed, falling down between them and jolting the bed enough that Kie fell off in shock and Pope managed to smack himself in the face. The anger on their faces didn’t last long as the cackle you’d let out at the scene you’d just witnessed was just as funny to them, so soon you were all sat there, Kie still on the floor, just laughing together.
“Why the fuck are you all so loud?” You heard JJ from the door, the silence died down, on your part it was from shock at how rough he looked this morning, you’d frozen when you’d seen the number of bruises on his face, and you dreaded to think what his torso looked like under the shirt he was wearing.
You made eye contact with him, before he could do or say anything though, you looked away, instead looking at John B who had given you a thumbs up for your method of waking up Kie and Pope. You gave him a big smile and bowed slightly, causing him to chuckle.
The rest of the day went by quite quickly, at first it was quite calm, the others recovering from the hangovers they had, luckily you’d always managed to avoid hangovers somehow, and then for the rest of the day you were all out on the boat.
Throughout the day you had felt JJ’s eyes on you, probably waiting for you to talk to him, but you avoided his eyes, still not sure you wanted to talk to him, especially with how your emotions had broken through your barriers that morning on the dock. On days that happened you were usually careful in avoiding any sort of emotional situation, and you felt like talking to JJ about why he had left without saying anything could become emotional, so even if it made you look a little bitchy, you did your best to avoid him.
Unfortunately Kie had picked up on how you were acting and pulled you to the side, away from the boys who were chatting at the wheel of the boat.
“Hey, what’s happened between you and JJ?”
“Nothing, I’m just not in the mood for his antics today.”
“Bullshit, you’re actively avoiding him, he has a face of a hurt puppy, the boys haven’t picked up on it cos they’re idiots, but I’m not.” She crossed her arms waiting for your answer.
“I don’t know why he looks like a ‘hurt puppy’ as you say, all I know is I let him stay round mine last night because I didn’t want him walking home in the state he was in, and when I woke up this morning he had already left, not even leaving a note.”
Kie was about to speak but you continued on, “and I’m being truthful when I say nothing happened, I’ve just had a difficult morning, and talking to him might make it worse, so I’m helping myself instead of him today. Okay?”
She gripped your hand, squeezing it slightly, “I can talk to him if you want?”
“No it’s honestly fine, I just don’t want to deal with him much today.”
“Okay then, we will relax together, and have a JJ free day.”
You smiled at her, thankful you’d met someone like her, someone who didn’t push too much and understood your wishes.
The rest of the day played out smoothly, JJ didn’t try and approach you, but the group as a whole had a good day out. Good enough that you were exhausted by the time you got home, quickly saying hi to your dad and avoiding him seeing the bruise on your arm, then heading to bed where you fell into a deep sleep very quickly.
—————
The next few days you were back at work, and you almost never saw anyone from the group, apart from Kie obviously, who you had a couple of shifts with, but you still hadn’t really spoken to JJ since the night of the Kegger. You now wanted to though, and it annoyed you slightly that he hadn’t tried speaking to you, probably thinking you’d still be slightly distant with him - but this whole situation was more due to him than you, you thought.
You decided that as you had a day off tomorrow, and were probably going to see the Pogues, you would try to talk to JJ then - at least try to get things back to how they were before the other night. The plan now made out in your head, you began to relax slightly, no longer feeling the awkward pang in your chest when you thought of him.
The rest of your work day went by without any issue, and by the time you’d had a pizza with your dad for tea, you still weren’t that tired, so instead of laying in your bed for another night in a row, you decided to go surfing.
The beach was quiet when you got there, nobody really out at this time, and you liked it. The night sky was reflected on the water, the sounds of the waves calmed your mind and heart, but it was only when you were about to step into the water that you realised the water might be too calm to surf. You didn’t want to go back home just yet though, so you left your board on the beach, and dove into the waves.
After being under the water for a minute, you resurfaced, treading water and keeping an eye on your position so the currents couldn’t move you too much without you realising; you stayed like this for a while, every now and then going back under water for as long as you could manage. Eventually your body began to tire, and you swam back to shore, grabbing your board from where you left it and got back into your car to head home.
—————
You were unlocking the door to your house when you heard movement behind you, you tried not to react, instead thinking about what you could use to protect yourself if needed, unfortunately all you had were the keys in your hand, so you turned around, ready to see what was behind you.
The sight was not what you expected, it was worse, you were frozen as you looked at JJ, blood running down his face, new bruises already forming over the ones from the other night, he wasn’t putting much weight on one of his legs and he had tears in his eyes.
Quickly shaking yourself out of the shock you had felt, you rushed towards him, “Holy shit JJ, what’s happened? Are you okay?”
His voice was gravelly, as if he’d been shouting, or screaming you thought with a shiver, “I went to your window but you weren’t there, so I waited here - I can go if you want.”
“Absolutely not,” you took his hand, already pulling him in the direction of your house, “I’ll clean you up again, yeah?”
You had turned to see if he was going to answer, but all he did was nod slightly, a tear falling down his cheek. The sight broke your heart and it took all your willpower to not cry as well.
He was silent - silent when you indicated for him to sit on the counter like last time, silent whilst you cleaned out his cuts and put ice on his wounds, silent when you led him into your room and sat him down on your bed. The only noises he ever made were sniffles or a hiss of pain when you cleaned out a bad cut.
You didn’t know what to do, whether you should ask him if he wanted to talk or to leave him alone completely. You crouched down in front of where he was sat, eye level with him, “Hey, will you be alright if I leave you for like five minutes? I’ve been in the sea so I kinda need a shower, but I don’t have to if you want me here with you.”
He looked at you, and shook his head and pointed back to the bathroom, showing he was fine with you leaving. You weren’t used to this quiet version of JJ, it unnerved you and made you want to break down in tears, but you couldn’t, at least not in front of him. So in the few minutes you were in the shower, you allowed a few tears to fall, heartbroken at the sight of him like this, but by the time you were back in your room, there was no sign of the emotions you’d let out, you were just ready to help him in any way you can.
He had settled down into your bed when you got back, the bruises on his chest obvious even in the dim light of your room, you made your way into bed next to him, laying on your side so you were facing him.
“You obviously don’t have to talk about it, but if you do want to I’m here for you.” He looked at you and the hand you’d held out for him to hold if he wanted it.
He put his hand in yours, still not saying anything, so you squeezed it and waited.
After a minute or so, he began speaking, “Um my dad did this to me,” you couldn’t help but let out a gasp at this, “he does it to me quite a lot actually, it’s why I spend so much time at John B’s - tonight it was because I wasn’t in the best of moods and didn’t get him a beer when he asked, so he told me how worthless I am, and that he wished I was dead.”
He sniffled, avoiding looking at you after what he said, completely unaware of the tears that were falling down your face, no longer contained by your resolve.
You squeezed his hand, “I may not have known you for a long time, but I know for a fact you’re not worthless, and the world would be an awful place if you were dead.”
He looked at you, likely still not convinced about what you were saying, so you continued, “You were one of the first people I met when I moved here, and because of my mum’s death, I wasn’t in the best of places, but everyday I have spent with you and the Pogues since have made my life a happier place again, you have especially had a part in that.”
You smiled at him, and to your delight, he smiled back.
You two lay like that for a while, holding hands in a comfortable silence. To your surprise it was JJ who broke the silence, “I’m sorry.”
“What for?” You looked at him confused
“For leaving the other day without telling you, I just panicked because you saw me vulnerable and you were being so nice, I didn’t want you to see me differently or something, so I thought I’d leave.”
Just as you were going to respond, he continued talking, “and then you wouldn’t even look at me the next day and I thought I’d really messed up, and I was going to talk to you, but I don’t know, I just couldn’t bring myself to.”
Before he could continue rambling, and making himself feel worse again you interrupted, “Hey, you hadn’t messed up or anything, yes I was a little annoyed at you leaving without telling me, but I knew you must of had a reason, and I was having other issues that day so I wanted to avoid emotions and stuff if that makes sense.”
“Yeh it does, maybe you can talk to me about that stuff sometime if you’re up for it, and I’m really glad I haven’t messed anything up because I think I might like you Y/N.”
You couldn’t help the smile that spread across your face, “That’s lucky, I think I might like you as well JJ Maybank.”
He pulled you closer, you put your head on his chest, careful not to hurt his bruises too much, and fell asleep like that, happy and content at the idea of being with the person beside you.
