i want to engage in flirty banter with robb stark so bad i can feel my scalp peeling from my skull like there’s a huge ass monkey unwrapping it like a banana OOO AH AH AH OO AH AH (monkey noises in case u were wondering why i broke out into song)
cuntlips42 do you know how real this is. it was so real i had to write this
robb stark x fem!reader
━━━━━━━━━━༺✰ ━━━━━━━━━━━
you’d compare the current state of winterfell to a chicken coop when the butcher comes in wielding a blade.
the king and queen of the seven kingdoms are on their way, and nobody is spared from helping prepare to host them. the cooks are preparing a feast, lady stark is dealing with the castle, lord stark is dealing with the winter town, and all of you have been assigned different tasks. arya is helping set the mess hall, bran and rickon are with lord stark, sansa with lady stark — and you, jon, theon, and robb have been told to prepare the rooms they’ll be staying in.
you jumped at the opportunity to prepare a room for the king and queen, choosing jon to accompany you, leaving theon and robb stuck with preparing the rooms for the queens cousins. they’ll be arriving soon, meaning all of your focus is on your task at hand.
so, naturally, you’re distracted when a head of auburn hair appears in the doorway.
"Jon," robb says. "I was starting to wonder."
you and jon both share a quizzical look - you've been at this for all of ten minutes, all spent without robb. robb says your name, which makes both of your heads turn to him. "Y’can't steal Jon to capture my attention."
you catch on quickly, and your eyebrows raise in question. "Oh, I can't?" robb shakes his head, crossing his arms. "Most unladylike." "Can't I?" a servant sheepishly moves past robb to bring the furs lady stark requested be put in the room. you take it from her with a smile, moving to drape them across the bed. "He went willingly. Tell him, Jon." jon's long since opted to ignore your squabble, placing candles throughout the room. his head turns at the mention of his name, and he looks at you both with uncertainty, as if deciding who to side with. it seems you're in luck. "Aye."
"Traitor." robb accuses. you huff a laugh, dividing the furs into two piles. the queen and her ladies are southern through and through, and lady stark said their tolerance for the cold weather is lower than a babes. "Are you going to be of use, Robb, or have you come all this way simply to get my attention?"
he guffaws at this. "Simply?" "Sneaking away from Theon is no simple endeavor. It takes great talent." he speaks with utmost seriousness, as if the others are on your doorstep. "You needn’t go through such effort," you say. "I'm notoriously generous.”
“For my efforts, some might say I’m deserving of my ladies favor.”
you shoot him a look; one that almost makes his knees buckle, regardless of who’s company you’re in. “Who’s to say you don’t already have it?”
you and robb hold each others gaze as he tries to muster a response. seeking out your spotlight and then becoming smitten underneath it; the jokes write themselves. fortunately for robb, the silence is soon interrupted by another voice.
"Robb!"
you, jon, and robb are in sync as you turn — met with a wide eyed theon standing in the doorway. clearly, robb is not as skilled as he thinks. "You said Lady Stark summoned you."
"She did." robb is so sincere in his response, despite your confusion, you almost believe him. you get clarity when he turns pointedly to you. your cheeks heat furiously at the implication.
jons eyes are glued to you, waiting for your reaction as his smile turns upside down in his effort to keep it at bay. theons eyes dart between you and robb in mild confusion before something clicks into place, and somehow, his eyes get even wider. theon shakes his head in disbelief. "Grotesque…”
jon turns around as to not show the large grin on his face at theons use of words. more importantly, at the way he's never used such before, made clear by his inflection when saying it.
theon walks past robb, intentionally catching shoulders with him as he does so in some strange act of defiance. robb is quick to roll his eyes.
theon begins helping you and jon set up, which is appreciated, but with both him and robb here - that means there isnt anyone in the other room. the realization makes you sigh, knowing what must be done; sacrificing your fun for the sake of peace.
you pick up the other pile of furs, walking to robb as theon takes your place. "Come," you turn around, and make eye contact with both jon and theon. "Behave."
robb seems more than delighted at this outcome, smirking at both men as you walk past him. he walks at your side, leaning to take the furs from you.
"You're horrid." "And you're blushing, my lady."

In a modern universe, Cersei Lannister would get sent to one of those fancy private rehabs/psych hospitals (she doesn't want to go but Jaime booked her in after her latest breakdown and convinces her that actually it's super trendy these days for rich white women to go on "mental health retreats") and immediately tries to convince her psych team that she's totally fine and actually doesn't need to be here only to promptly be diagnosed with Bipolar and put on an ungodly amount of Seroquel.
Every single meeting she's forced to attend, she sits in her chair huffing up a storm while everyone else speaks, and when it's her turn goes on a fifteen minute rant alternating between insisting that everything wrong with her isn't actually her fault, insulting everyone else at the meeting because can't BELIEVE people actually fall for this psychobabble therapy nonsense, and sobbing uncontrollably over how her life has turned out.
After she's done she goes back to ignoring everyone.
Would absolutely look down on the people in there for narcotic addictions despite the fact that she's spent roughly the equivalent of the GDP of a small country on cocaine over the years.
Also freely admits to her therapist to having had an incestuous relationship with Jaime during childhood and adolescence but insists it doesn't matter anymore because they "grew out of it" after Jaime went to military school and she realised it would've been social suicide for her modelling career if anyone got photos of them together while she was dating various other celebrity guys, and remains completely oblivious to the ongoing emotional incest and codependency that's running through her entire family.
She emphatically insists that the only problem with Tywin's parenting was that he didn't send Tyrion away at birth and that he got Jaime a spot at Harvard Business School even though he didn't actually WANT to go and SHE did.
If this sounds like I'm bashing her, I promise I'm not. These are simply things I know to be true.

I don't even like Aegon but god do I wanna see him get mad and start smashing his fathers stupid fucking lego set to pieces with a blunt object.
No its fine you keep building Valyria with lego, Viserys. Just play with your building block toys instead of doing literally anything to prevent your own children from going to war the moment your life catches up to your half rotting corpse of a body.

I read GRRM’s interview regarding book vs show canon and I thought the way he was approaching an adaptation of his own story, and fiction as a whole, was very interesting. I do wonder though - does the concept of having a separate show canon kind of become like a cop-out? Because in that case, any TV/film adaptation can just decide to change the plot as they see fit and go “oh, well, that’s our canon, the book is a different canon.” Doesn’t it cease to be an adaptation after a point, or at least become a loose one? In the HotD context, a lot of the changes being made I actually quite like because I can see them fitting in the canon, because there’s nothing suggesting otherwise.
But say, Sansa marrying Ramsay (or, alternatively, the moment that show was dead to me) we can say with absolute certainty did not take place and will almost definitely never take place. D&D knew that too but they went ahead with it anyway; it’s not quite like the Scarlett example where it makes no difference to the story because this change does. I feel like the whole point of adapting written words into something visual loses some of its sanctity if we just accept TV changes a whole separate canon, as opposed to simply a change made by the writers (good change or bad change is up to personal opinion).
I have followed your blog for almost a decade so I’m really curious to hear your thoughts on the subject.
GRRM's "Scarlett example" -- his question of "how many children did Scarlett O'Hara have?", because in the book Gone With the Wind she had three, one with each of her three husbands, whereas in the movie she only had one -- has been his go-to when asked about the difference between book and show canon since at least 2012. Or to quote him from 2015,
How many children did Scarlett O’Hara have? Three, in the novel. One, in the movie. None, in real life: she was a fictional character, she never existed. The show is the show, the books are the books; two different tellings of the same story.
This is IMO one of the most sensible ways for an author to look at adaptations of their work (even if I have gotten rather tired of GRRM using the Scarlett example specifically, pick something different George, we've seen it before lol). There is book canon and there is show canon. They are different parallel universes. They're separate canons because they contain changes made by the writers, and also because the very process of moving from the written word to visual media must involve some kind of change.
And this applies to all adaptations. That's why I brought up X-Men comics vs the Fox X-Men movies vs the X-Men cartoon (original 90s and 2024's '97). For example, there's 4 different versions of the Dark Phoenix Saga between those canons, at the very least. Wait, sorry lol, I forgot the Ultimate canon version. And the various in-comics alternate universe versions. And god knows when they finally bring the X-Men into the MCU they'll probably do yet another DPS there too. And that's only one of many storylines that are radically different between the various canons.
Or look at the various Interviews with the Vampire. Is the new tv show "not an adaptation" because its Claudia is a teenager rather than 5 years old as in the book or portrayed by an 11 year old as in the movie, thus resulting in extremely different relationships and a reshaped plot? (Among many other changes?) No. IWTV has book canon, movie canon, and show canon.
And I can't speak that well about Transformers since it's not a major fandom of mine, but go take a look at their various continuities if you want some more perspective about just how very far the meaning of "adaptation" can stretch.
Or hell, look at Stephen King, where among his many many many adaptations, some of which just barely resemble the original text, the only one he sued to have his name removed from was The Lawnmower Man, because they literally used an entirely different story and just slapped his title on it.
And then there's the movie Adaptation, which is a wildly meta-adaptation of the non-fiction book The Orchard Thief (it's a story about the process of adapting that book and involves a fictional version of the writer, the screenplay writer, and an entirely invented screenplay writer's twin brother)... and it was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for multiple film awards (and won a few times), and the original writer even said it kept to the book's themes.
Suffice it to say, HOTD has a long, long, long way to go before it could ever "cease to be an adaptation after a point". Changing the timeline to make Alicent and Rhaenyra the same age, or doing Blood & Cheese differently, do not even compare to what some book-to-visual media "loose adaptations" have done. Even GOT, as wildly terrible as their non-book storylines could be, both their changes to the text and after they had no actual text to work with, never became a "loose adaptation". Certainly it became a less than faithful adaptation -- and let's be real, it always was unfaithful for both themes and the essential elements of so many characters -- but it also always was a remarkably accurate adaptation of the whole span of Westeros (in geography and breadth of characters) and the general (not specific) book plot. (Consider previous attempts at adaptation that GRRM rejected, such as a single 2 hour movie, or eliminating Jon and Dany for being "irrelevant", or only making a Jon movie with none of the other storylines, etc.) Which is why, when GOT was different (and awful) it was such a betrayal, like a zombie or evil alien wearing the skin of your best friend or beloved child, and worse, that this twisted lookalike was the only version millions and millions of viewers ever saw and believed to be true.
But again, this just underlines what GRRM has said. "The show is the show, the books are the books." There is book canon and there is show canon. They are separate things. Parallel universes -- very close parallels, often touching in many places, but sometimes they're quite different. Sometimes the differences in adaptation enhance the themes of the original canon; sometimes the author may even consider certain adapted characters (Shae, King Viserys, Helaena) to be better than his original canon; sometimes you know there's only those tricky NDAs (and payments of lots of money) that prevent him from expressing his disappointment in more ways than dropping the Sansa TWOW preview chapter only days before the release of GOT S5. But perhaps if we're lucky, maybe one day we'll have yet another parallel canon to compare to the others.

Like father Like daughter (Robert Baratheon and Mya’s broken hearts)
Tumblr media
They dreamed to marry;
“Robert had loved her even more. She was to have been his bride.” -AGOT Eddard I
"Mychel's my love," Mya explained. "Mychel Redfort. He's squire to Ser Lyn Corbray. We're to wed as soon as he becomes a knight, next year or the year after." -AGOT Catelyn VI
They failed(or refused);
“I killed him, Ned, I drove the spike right through that black armor into his black heart, and he died at my feet. They made up songs about it. Yet somehow he still won. He has Lyanna now." -AGOT Eddard X
“Mychel was the best young swordsman in the Vale, and gallant . . . or so poor Mya thought, till he wed one of Bronze Yohn's daughters. Lord Horton gave him no choice in the matter, I am sure, but it was still a cruel thing to do to Mya." -AFFC Alayne II
Then they refused any love;
“I had no wish to marry after Lyanna was taken from me.” -AGOT Eddard VII
“My father's tried to make a match for Mya, but she'll have none of them.” -AFFC Alayne II
But the saddest thing in all of those Robert left Mya for take back Lyanna and he lost both of them in the end;
“I knew that he would always be there to catch me." She pushed her hair back. "Then one day he wasn't. Men come and go. They lie, or die, or leave you.” -AFFC Alayne II

I feel like how Alicent and Rhaenyra’s whatever the fuck they have going on is how these writers wished Sansa and Daenerys would be written with Sansa humbling herself by going to Daenerys, offering her the north, leaving winterfell and walking away from her family and everything she fought for for queen Daenerys, the queen her 11 year old self (who had to learn monarchy = bad the hard way) always wanted. Just this makes even LESS sense than sansa becoming Dany’s cheerleader because it betrays the entire characterisation of Alicent.

A War of Seasons, Chapter 5: Jon
To the Night's Watch, You will return the bones of my brother to his home, where he can rest with his kin, along with an emissary to explain in full the details of his "execution." House Stark deserves at least that much consideration from you, and I will tolerate nothing less. I will not condition aid to the Night's Watch upon these demands, but be warned that winter is coming. The crow, like the wolf, dies when it is friendless and alone. My brother, your Lord Commander, knew this to be true. His family knows the same. Sansa Stark Lady of Winterfell
"What a bitch," Tormund said in respectful awe.
