gem and joel as a notorious criminal duo who are on the run after a robbery-turned-kidnapping goes awry. they take refuge in a small town in the middle of nowhere, so tiny it's not on any map (they only found it because etho, who helps them out sometimes, gave them the coordinates and promised to keep them hidden, and they trusted him enough to take the gamble) and it becomes increasingly clear that this small town is definitely, absolutely a front for something.
it's got everything one would expect a small town to have: a tiny bed & breakfast, a cafe-grocer hybrid that only stocks about three total items, a little old-fashioned sweets shop connected to a visitor center that's seen better days, even a small tattoo parlour that might be skirting health and safety regulations and probably should've gone bankrupt years ago. but there are almost no people. this town isn't even on a road that many cars pass through, so they're not making money from anyone stopping by on their way to somewhere better. gem's pretty sure she could count the number of residents on her fingers. joel's convinced everyone's acting shifty all the time (and he knows shifty. he's proficient in shifty.) the town is thriving, somehow (as much as a small town can thrive), but it's definitely not because of the income it generates.
so, the town is hiding something. they don't know what it is. they don't really care, either, as long as it does what etho promised and keeps them safe and away from prying eyes. far be it for them to judge, anyway. they've done much shadier things to get away from the feds.
besides, they've got bigger things to worry about right now, like what to do with the man currently tied up in the back of their car...

Prompt 108
So this time it wasn’t Danny’s fault, or even Boxy’s fault! And it wasn’t like Pandora’s box was open for more than a split second! But uh, still. This could be a bit of a problem, what with how it’s affected um, well, everyone. Living and ghosts.
At least it’s not dangerous! Really, how bad can people getting animal aspects be? Well, besides the embarrassment.

Mount Rainier National Park Archives Photo of the South Blockhouse in 1930.
#HistoricMountRainier The design of the Sunrise area departs from the “NPS Rustic” style set by the Longmire Area, and is instead inspired by early territorial outposts of the Pacific Northwest. Two “blockhouses”, a visitor center, and a stockade fence that hides the area’s utility yard are collectively known as the Yakima Park Stockade Group. The Stockade Group is separately designated as a National Historic Landmark for its architectural significance in addition to being part of the Mount Rainier National Historic Landmark District.

The Stockade Group was not built simultaneously. The South Blockhouse was one of the first buildings to be built in the area in 1930. It served as an interpretive center and ranger station until the visitor center was built in 1943. The North Blockhouse was completed in 1944. Both blockhouses currently serve as employee housing.

Have you visited Sunrise during the summer and stopped in the historic visitor center?

My current job is seasonal just below full-time and ends Dec 31st, with my hours being cut down starting in November. My boss recommended that I apply for the office manager position a couple towns over which is up to a $5/hr pay increase but also a lot more responsibility, and I’d have to move. I don’t want to throw away the progress I’ve made here but this organization also has its fair share of problems and I’ve never had an office manager position before.. kinda freaking out because this is my shot at moving up the ladder and getting out of my parents house. Also idk if they want me to finish my term here or start the new position asap, in which case I’d have to commute back to my current location to finish up some craft fair responsibilities. I’m afraid to make a mistake and stretch myself too thin, or to let this opportunity pass me by.

Apologies if you’re getting tired of pictures of Mt Rainier, but it really is breathtaking. Today we returned to the Sunrise visitors center and hiked the 9.2 mile Burroughs Loop Trail. It gave us spectacular views of the mountain and glacier. We had to traverse a few snow fields along the way but nothing too treacherous.

As usual the marmots were visible along the trail, including one who perched himself atop the wall at the glacier viewing area.

Are you sure I can't pet you? I'm really good at it and I learned well from my mother it may take a few months/years but if you slowly get closer and closer to a cat they will let you pet them eventually (and that includes you)
If my mum can give half feral cats get their medicine so they don't get worms then I can give you a god damn back scratch
OH YEAH? HOW DO YOU PLAN TO DO THAT? I’M DIMENSIONS AWAY AND IF YOU PET ME IN THAT CAT’S BODY I’LL SCRATCH!
