25. A birthday memory

Whilst growing up on the road, birthday's were just another day rather than a chance for a big celebration. Perhaps if close to a town, their father might be able to scrounge a small cake for them to share with a special feast but if busy if was often postponed for another time.

Not that Byleth ever minded, they knew their father loved them and didn't feel like they missed out. There was usually a small gift ready for them to open in the morning when the awoke. Some trinket or a new weapon, then Jeralt would cook them their favourite food for breakfast.

The best birthdays were when they weren't working and Jeralt would spend the day with them. Take them hunting or some local event in town. One year there was a fair close by he took them too. Wide eyed, Byleth got to watch a spectacle of fire eaters and tumblers putting on a show. The day had concluded with a firework display and they'd sat on their father's shoulders staring up at the bright colours lighting up the night sky.

2. A memory of their father

Dimitri has many wonderful memories of his father but the earliest one is from when he was around 3 or four years old.

Little dimitri was crawling around on the rug in front of the hearth of the family room. He’d been making attempts to walk all week, pulling himself up to his feet taking a couple of wobbly steps then falling in his butt again.

“How’s my little lion club doing?” lambert asked, bending down to speak to his son. He leant his Lance against the wall nearby. “Daddy” dimitri cooed back in a determined tone.

Leaning forwards, the Prince grabbed the front of his fathers robes and pulled himself to his feet again. “Well done Dimitri” Lambert praise “How about trying to walk”

Looking around Dimitri spotted the legendary Lance and set off towards it. He was close when he started to stumble but before falling he reached out and grabbed the shaft. Using it to retighten himself, Dimitri pulled it closer then used it like a stick to make his way back to his father.

Reaching the king, he was swept up in a giant hug. “Look at you go!” His father laughed cuddling his son close. “When you can walk without the Lance, we can look to training you with one” he joked.

It was only the vaguest memory but dimitri could still recall the warmth from the fire and his fathers hug. Now the Lance was his but it still felt like his fathers weapon supporting him like back then.

Am I the only one who feels spoiled by reading Tamora Pierce as a child and then never finding something that hit quite the same? She really had it all. One of the only authors I’ve seen do multiple generations well (because the previous generations aren’t just offed or all of their progress backtracked). Ambient vs scholarly magic systems is still one of the coolest magic systems to this day. The friendships are perfect and just the right amount of romance to make it fun. Redemption stories that fit the characters and don’t make them perfect angels even as they grow for the better. Tragic regression stories that haunt the characters (and me).
