25. A birthday memory

Whilst growing up on the road, birthday's were just another day rather than a chance for a big celebration. Perhaps if close to a town, their father might be able to scrounge a small cake for them to share with a special feast but if busy if was often postponed for another time.

Not that Byleth ever minded, they knew their father loved them and didn't feel like they missed out. There was usually a small gift ready for them to open in the morning when the awoke. Some trinket or a new weapon, then Jeralt would cook them their favourite food for breakfast.

The best birthdays were when they weren't working and Jeralt would spend the day with them. Take them hunting or some local event in town. One year there was a fair close by he took them too. Wide eyed, Byleth got to watch a spectacle of fire eaters and tumblers putting on a show. The day had concluded with a firework display and they'd sat on their father's shoulders staring up at the bright colours lighting up the night sky.

Dimitri hadn't expected to be joined on this terrace under the stars tonight. The crown prince was taking a break from the grand party taking place in the hall behind him. Gentle music drifted out from whatever dance was ongoing but he was starting to get a headache from it all. Going to these events were one of his least favourite things to do but sadly it was part of his princely duties. Cosying up to nobles and pretend to be interested in thier petty grievances and social niceties. It was exhausting.

An acceptable time to leave couldn't come soon enough. At least there was a slight breeze out here and a view to take his mind off it all. Relaxing, Dimitri leaned against the balcony edge, closing his eyes, lost in thought.

Eyes shot open as he sensed someone else enter the space. Clocking eyes with the guilty party, it was Hector. Oh yes, he'd seen other royal from the Academy there tonight.

"Good evening." He greeted his fellow student "Had enough as well" Receiving a nod in return, Dimitri found himself comfortable in the silence between them as Hector moved in closer. Maybe it was the atmosphere of the night, maybe it was the location or maybe the alcohol he'd downed earlier. Even when Hector was right up against him, head leaning down, Dimitri found himself tilting his head slightly to meet the Ostian prince partway, their lips brushing each others in a hesitant way.

Taking the plunge, the prince kissed the other. It was clumsy, clearly unpractised in the art, but Hector was gentle and guiding. It lasted less than a minute but could have been five. Once over, they broke apart. Hector offered a small smile before heading back into the party.

Dimitri was confused but intrigued. shaking his head clear, he headed out to the horses, thanking the host for an excellent evening before leaving to return to the Monastery. He wouldn't recall this in the morning.

Love that Oppenheimer is a deeply disturbing horror movie about a man forced to accept that he is, in a person, the representative manifestation of mankind’s evil in committing one of the greatest horrors of human history - LITERALLY acting as the modern Prometheus, tormented by his sins for the remainder of time. Knowing that he will never be pitied and his actions will forever be utterly unforgivable because the blood of genocide and the potential of total human annihilation will eternally drip from his hands.

But also the simultaneous indictment by the film that to blame a single person for the Manhattan Project is to refuse to accept your own capacity for great evil if the ends ever seem to justify the means, and the culpability of every member of a species that lets itself create something so unspeakably terrible.

Hate that twitter’s take on such a nuanced and brilliantly handled examination of those issues is “movie bad because protagonist not evil enough.”

a kiss between enemies who should be fighting 

The pair of them whirled around, dust rising from the battlefield ground beneath their feet from the rapid movement. A pair of fighters facing off, one with a lance the other with magic. It wasn't a serious fight but being treated as such by those participating.

Dimitri moved in close, using the length of his lance to close the distance even quicker aiming for the side of the lady before him. Rushing past, he checked her with the shaft of his weapon and turned sharply to bring the tip up to the throat. Time to end the fight in his favour.

Caught up in his plan, the Blue Lion wasn't keeping track of Lilina and was surprised to find his face pressed to hers as he turned. Lips almost touching. She must have turned as he did.

Panicing, Dimitri swiftly back peddled, stammering and dropping his lance. "I'm so sorry .... I didn't me-- . . . It was a mistake. Not that kissing you would be bad or anything. Just not something I'd do." He was waving his hands, backing away. "Not because of you or anything. Your lovely. I just . . . " The crown prince trailed off embarrassed byt he whole affair.

"I should . . . go now. Yes, err you win. Thank you for training with me"

Lance left on the floor, Dimitri exited the arena.
