flamingo this one actually might be my favorite song of his, if i take all possible metrics into account. it encompasses pretty much every aspect of yonezu-san's unique style in a single funky and unmistakably japanese package: enka-inflected vocals; gloriously oddball production choices; a music video that makes you question your sanity; literary, poetic lyrics (along with unusual kanji readings for good measure. he's a nerdy lyricist, OMFG) and a sick, eminently danceable groove. i cannot praise this song enough.

pop song i don't even care that the music video for this song is a glorified sony playstation commercial; the song and visuals are just that good. my actual favorite of his to sing. and the lyrics? cynical AF. i'm surprised sony agreed to them, but it seems yonezu-san is big enough in japan that they were more than willing to play on his terms. they did approach him for it, after all.

lady if i ever marry: i want this love song played at my wedding. it is gleeful and perfect.

pale blue another love song. gods, yone-kun's voice moves like a stately, gigantic cumulus cloud floating in a brilliant blue summer sky on this. it's simply majestic.

shinigami and another culturally-specific tune with chord progressions and a vocal style common in japanese folk music, based on a rakugo tale. i wish the MV included the entire song, but it's still glorious.

azalea i swear this dude has written some of my favorite love songs of all time; this one reminds me that i am loved no matter how much i might change or fade with the seasons. such a chill vibe, too.

kick back the MV for this one is funny enough to cure cancer. it's batshit insane. another tidy encapsulation of his vocal, lyrical and interpretive prowess and—as the chainsaw man OP—my formal intro to his music.

living dead youth japanese folk-flavored. danceable. disturbingly funny music video. also a delight to sing. don't look up the lyrics; you'll cry.

shunrai this one is rap. fight me. smells of late spring or early summer: a bittersweet love song with absurdly gorgeous lyrics... spat (or intoned?) fast. this one, i can sing entirely from memory.

loser yonezu-san learned to dance for this video. please watch it if you have not seen it, i beg you. also the song—or large parts of it? rap. so much clever and quick-tongued internal rhyme going on here: a real challenge to sing. ( ☞ ˙ワ˙)☞ As a heads up, all my Self Inserts are named Madison/Maddy, including my Unknown Self Insert. Also, in order to explain my Self Insert I have to talk about Grant, since the two are the opposite of each other when it comes to three things.

Grant is eight years older than the player. So for my Self Ship he's thirty-four years old. Grant has lived a very full life with multiple past relationships, friends, and a successful career.

He used to be in the Army until his Lieutenant made a bad call, resulting in all of Grant's Squad/Friends getting killed. The only survivors were Grant and his Lieutenant, who he drifted apart from after the Army.

Note: That's the Lieutenant's messed up photo from another game.

When Grant left the military, he moved into his parent's old log cabin. Later, he sees the player in town, starts stalking them, and eventually kidnaps them.

Meanwhile, my Unknown Self Insert is a twenty-six year old who has struggled with issues isolating herself (social recluse).

She recently moved to the city/town for a fresh start, sometime before Grant. Unfortunately, the quote, "Wherever you go, you take yourself" reflects her situation. As moving to a new place didn't change anything.

She isn't happy with where her life is at. She feels behind others her age, both career-wise and socially.

Madison works as cashier for a home improvement store (like Home Depot/Lowes/Ace Hardware). She's working at a dead-end retail job until she can figure out something else. Her dream job is being an artist, which feels unattainable since it won’t provide her with financial stability. This has caused her to suffer from art block.

She's unsure what to do to since her future feels bleak.

Before being kidnapped, Madison was an extremely lonely person. She doesn’t have any friends, isn’t close to any of her coworkers, and has felt disconnected from the rest of society for a very long time. She feels like there’s something wrong with her that she can't pinpoint but everyone else sees. That everyone got a manual on how to be human except her.

Madison is extremely insecure. Due to her lack of confidence, she tends to put walls up since she's afraid of rejection and failure. However, she desperately wants to break out of this self-destructive cycle she's in. She's TRYING to change, but is struggling.

Her insecurities about herself, her passions, and future are a HUGE contrast to Grant, who is EXTREMELY confident in himself.

For example, in the game, Grant calls the player under the ruse of receiving a fake number.

He'll call them again and ask, "Hi there. Yea, it's me again. I just had to ask. Why would someone who was hitting it off with someone else turn around and then give them a fake number afterwards?"

The player can later say, "Sometimes it's cause they just don't find the other person all that attractive."

To which Grant responds, "What? No. I'm plenty attractive. Lots of women find me attractive."

Also, insulting Grant doesn't really work as he tends to turn it back onto the player.

Player: "You're a fucking creep! YOU'RE SICK!"

Grant: "Mmmm . . . That I am dear. But only for you."

Player: "Getting off on just my breathing huh? You must be a two pump chump!"

Grant: "Whether I am or not, there's other ways to make you scream. And either way. I'll still be filling you with my hot cum. Wait. . . . right . . . I was suppose to be insulted, wasn't I? I'm sorry dear, let me try again. Oh . . . forsaken me . . . Woe is my manhood."

He chuckles to himself as if he was incredibly funny. I don't find myself laughing though.

Grant: "I do love talking to you sweetheart. But I think it's time now."

However, his confidence isn't like a stereotypical egotistical cocky character, but rather it's something he views as simply a fact. Like yes, he's objectively attractive and hasn't struggled to date.

His confidence is what makes him so terrifying. That he without a doubt believes the player will eventually submit to him.

Grant is so convinced the player will given in, that he can accidentally kill you. Since he believes you'll stop resisting and sleep, if you refuse and try to stay awake he'll accidentally strangle you to death.

It's one of the few endings where you're killed.

There's also two scenes where the player can threaten Grant with a knife. However, Grant doesn't take your threat seriously at all.

Player: "Stay the fuck back!"

He doesn't listen though, instead he starts to walk forward towards me.

Player: "I said-"

Grant: "Yea, I heard you sweetheart. But we both know you don't have what it takes to use that thing. So, why don't you just put it down."

Depending on the player's choice he CAN get stabbed:

The other scene where you threaten him with a knife:

Player: "STAY BACK!"

He lifts his hands slowly but without caution.

Grant: "Sweetheart . . . This is very disappointing of you. Why are you fighting me?"

Player: "Stay back or I'll stab you!"

He lets out a long sigh but continues to slowly walk towards me.

Grant: "You wouldn't stab me my beloved. Now put the knife down."

I find it interesting the way Grant is so confident that you won't stab him that he approaches you without any caution. Technically, Grant does have military experience, which could add to that. However, I'm pretty sure that lore wasn't added until after the game's release. So it's not that Grant believes he can handle you, but that he 100% believes you don't have what it takes to do it. Something he's so confident about that could end with him getting stabbed.

Grant feels very optimistic about the future and is convinced after kidnapping her, that, in his own words: "We're going to be the best couple there ever was."

While Madison felt very grim about her future. When Grant kidnaps her, he takes her away from all her problems and fears. While unintentionally giving her a new fear (him) and a new goal (escaping).

Since she's isolated (and possibly restrained):

She's now no longer dealing with the issues that plagued her for so long. The stress of paying bills and figuring out what career path she wants to follow. One that will both pay well, and she's happy with.

Art that was once the skillset she never felt good enough at now has turned into a creative outlet for the situation.

Also, since Grant kidnapped her, she's not able to interact with anyone outside him. Which also means she is no longer is at risk of facing rejection or judgement from others.

As horrible as the situation with Grant is, it's one of the first times she's ever felt fully accepted. Since she can’t turn to her coping skills by running away or isolating herself after being kidnapped. She’s forced to spend time with him and be vulnerable. It’s very jarring since she has so desperately craved to connect with another human being. Yet it’s happening with the worst person imaginable.

Due to her low self-esteem she has mixed feelings over Grant's obsession with her. She tries to rationalize it in her head, but it just feels so nice to be desired. To be complimented and praised.

Grant: "You're so beautiful. So precious. I knew you were the one for me the moment I saw you. You're perfect. In every way."

Due to not having very high hopes for her future overtime, she subconsciously develops a fear of returning to society. After all, if she escapes and Grant is arrested she'll truly be alone again.

There's this HUGE fear of restarting. Just because you've been kidnapped doesn't mean the world stopped moving. You still lose your apartment and job. Everyone else continued to live their lives and the world you already struggled to feel a part of functioned fine without you.

So, when you so desperately want to be loved and accepted, having someone say that they unconditionally accept you and all they want in return is for you to love them, sounds so enticing.

Grant: "I'm going to take real good care of you. You don't have to work anymore. Or do anything. All you have to do, is love me. There's nothing to be afraid of. I'm going to be real good to you."

It doesn't help her and Grant have this natural chemistry. That he also desperately wants the player to reciprocate even though it's super unrealistic they would. To the point you can use it to your advantage in the game.

In one of the routes after Grant breaks through your apartment window, you can scream for help and he'll grab your mouth. He'll then pull you over to the couch and telling you to not do that again. The player afterwards can try to stall for time with the hope that one of their neighbors has called the police after hearing you scream.

Grant: "I have to get you home."

Player: "Can't we just stay here?"

I pat the couch invitingly.

Grant: "Nice try. We both know you don't mean that."

He starts to dig for something out of his pocket.

Player: "But what if I did?"

He pauses before he pulls it out all the way.

Grant: "What if . . . you did?"

He thinks it over for a moment.

Player: "You could . . . come sit with me. Watch some tv . . . talk?"

He eyes dart around the room in contemplation.

(HE'S ACTUALLY CONTEMPLATING ADFN;LAKDJ. She was screaming for help two seconds ago there's no way she actually wants to- BUT WHAT IF?!!!!!!!)

Grant: "Why the change of heart?"

He's not foolish enough to fall for it that easily and the police arrive before you can answer but oH MY GOD.

In the beginning, Madison would occasionally fight against him. However, she quickly stops since she doesn't want to constantly be punished and is scared he's going to accidentally kill her. Instead, she plays the waiting game looking for an opportunity to attempt to escape. Until she just has one moment where a flip switches inside her, wondering what she's even fighting to return to.

A life with Grant she's guaranteed to know what she gets. Meanwhile, life outside is scary and filled with uncertainty. Even though Grant is the thing she should fear most overtime he becomes a source of comfort and the outside world is what scares her.

As long as she stops fighting then everything will be okay :)

Grant: "I know, it's really scary but I'm not going to hurt you unless I have to. Everything's going to be ok."

Grant: "I don't want to hurt you Maddy. That's not what I want."

Player: "Please don't hurt me. Please . . ."

Grant: "Shhh . . . I'm not here to hurt you. I could never hurt you."

He pulls my head backwards and places a kiss on the top of it.

Grant: "There's no need to be scared. See?"

Somehow I just can't agree.

Grant: "Let me make this simple for you Maddy. You don't want to get stabbed. I really don't want to have to stab you. So come quietly and neither one of us have to do something we don't want to. Just cause I don't want to, doesn't mean I won't. You're likely to be easier to handle if you're wounded."

7. Recommend a fic that uses a trope you love

So. I like an escort AU. It's a tricky one to execute well, but when it lands it LANDS. asunder, asunder by @ladyeggplant landed for me like the crewed remnant of a moon-bound space shuttle on its return to the atmosphere; with incredible heat and impossible delicacy to protect the fragile little humans inside.

Featuring Daniel as an escort who just has to smile and smile, who sorta loves and sorta hates his job, who is weirdly entertained by this sulky spiky little guy. Crack. I'm not normally a Dando girl but the compassion this fic has for both of them moves me, and the Daniel POV/interiority is so human and funny and disarming.

10. Recommend a fic that is more than 10 years old

Struggled with this as my bookmarking habits have been deeply chaotic BUT then I remembered one of my number one Spirk fics of all time, Leave No Soul Behind by whochick. This fic is to me a perfect example of one of the amazing things fanfic can do - take a cool universe/plot and expand an underexplored aspect of it in a way that blows your mind. In this case - what if Spock worked for the Federation's space-going equivalent of the emergency services as a shit hot paramedic?

Medical fics are probably also a fave trope of mine, and this has that plus the politics, plus the romance, plus a plot that really keeps you whipping through. I really don't know how to do this fic justice except to say that it did actually genuinely change my brain a bit, and if it were a physical book it would be dogeared and well-abused by all the hands I would have pressed it into, as well as constant spine cracking from me.

Hot take: Lenector is a much more interesting, compelling ship if you see it from the optics of two fucked up people hurting each other and stuck in a toxic, codependent relationship

I was wondering why Lenore was kept in the castle as a prisoner after Isaac conquered it. She's doing nothing. Isaac, who has vanished in thin air, doesn't seem to be wanting to ask her for help when he's a young inexperienced king who only got a kingdom by stealing the throne and she is one of the former queens and highly skilled in commerce - sure, probably she would have told him to go fuck himself, but had he asked her for help it would have been a good way to show that he was serious in his intention to build a kingdom. Basically Lenore is just a depressed mouth to feed (with Hector's blood, I presume, the stash won't last forever, not that the show ever touches on the idea of her parasitically feeding on her pet as exchange for his safety). She is not a threat. She doesn't want to do anything dangerous. And had she not killed herself, she would have outlived her jailers anyway and left free to regain control of the kingdom or do anything else she wanted. So, why isn't she let go?

Because Hector wants her there. For no reason other than, well, he has nothing left in his life. He was planning to die, but Isaac took it away from him, so he was left confused and lost and clung to his only certainty in his life, the woman who abused him but also kept him safe when no one else did. Even after physically freeing himself of her and mutilating himself, he did not mentally break free. He did not gain the courage to face the world, he was kept too sheltered.

Why doesn't she try to run away? Well, she has nothing left in her life but Hector. The same man who destroyed her life for no good reason, but also the same man who was willing to listen to her no matter what and never saw her as a stupid useless girl. Maybe she resents him, but hey, it's what she deserves after what she did, right? (assuming she has enough conscience to think so; in my ideal version she has, but she's too much of a coward to acknowledge it, remember "oh shush you were having fun")

I made a post a while ago where I compared Hector keeping Lenore safe during Isaac's assault on the castle to Hector refusing to kill Isaac in PtR, leaving him to witness the castle's fall. I said that in the latter's case, it's hard to say if Hector spared Isaac out of friendship or out of superiority. And if there were ulterior motives for show Hector's cruel mercy, it could have been brilliant. Finally, we're seeing the twisted Hector who resurrects dead animals because he wants pets because he just wants to be loved.

Hector is keeping Lenore as his prisoner not out of revenge, which never seems to cross his mind, but because he wants her as company. No matter how she or Isaac feel about it. After all, she never cared how he felt, and it's not like he knows much about love, so he's just imitating her brand of vampire love, the love you show by keeping things as close to you as you can :) underneath his kind demeanor, don't forget how selfish and out-of-touch with people he is.

Hector and Lenore are nothing more than tools without drive or direction. Hector only wants safety, and Lenore only wants comfort. They found it in each other. But it's not love what ties them. Not real, healthy human love anyway. They are miserable together, but they have no one else, and they are going to sink their claws in each other out of desperation and craving of human warmth that they cannot give to each other because they keep lying to each other in an effort to precisely mimicry that companionship.

This also ties with my idea that Hector would be filled with resentment for how cruelly Lenore broke his heart, but putting up a façade of politeness, and Lenore would be aware that he's not happy, but like I said she's too much of a coward to address it, so she puts up a façade of playfulness in hopes that eventually he'll get over it. He doesn't. He never grows to love her, only to depend on her. And Lenore never learns how to love as a human, she always sees Hector as her pet, a cherished one but a pet nonetheless. Which is why the situation of imprisonment drives her mad: she should have power, damn it! But she lost it. She only has Hector now.

They bonded through lies, deceit and betrayal, their relationship is nothing but toxic and the pretense of happiness is barely surface deep, and this would have been so cool if the writer did not spend so much time pretending she's a poor widdle girl who did nothing wrong

listen i just love relationships between two unwell people built on codependency and the primal need for each other no matter how unhealthy it is, it's why game Isaactor makes me go all 👀

(also yes in this sense Lenore killing herself makes more sense. She feels worthless, she is removing herself from the picture because she refuses to cope with her uncomfortableness and to free Hector from her toxic self. Without her, Hector is finally free to face the world. Or, since I would like Hector to have agency for once, they could just go their own separate ways, I don't want her to die, I just want Hector to grow, something he didn't do in the show.)

I'm gonna go with a non HP one! She's In Parties is a Spike/Drusilla fic from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It follows Spike and Drusilla through history as they attend various parties and murder people etc. I think it's just underrated because the fandom for this pairing compared to other btvs ships is TINY, criminally small, and believe me it's incredibly hard to find fics for them, while the ones that do exist get very little attention.

I think it deserves love (and it does get some, which I'm very grateful for!) because I put a loooot of effort into historical research for it, something I always love to do. Also it's one of the more graphically violent things I've written which has been a lot of fun. Spike and Dru deserve a little violence 💖 as a treat

She and my S/I cross paths briefly once, in a version of her meeting with the Brotherhood in the show that I'm yoinking to apply to my primarily book-canon. But the second time we meet, it's while she's been exiled and I'm trying to pick up the pieces of what the Brotherhood had become since then.

We're both coming undone, doubting everything, barely clinging to life and to who we are, have either done or been complicit in things neither of us want to admit to anyone. Her glimpses of our future and fears that she's no good for me make her want to keep me away, unsure of whether her actions will make me become her enemy in the end. I've already planned that she'll probably try to end the relationship for my own good at one point. ;O;

But we'll always come back together. We won't let each other face our demons or the oncoming war for humanity alone. And man, if this song doesn't capture that feeling.

Pretty self-explanatory, her whole life's mission is to prevent a frigid apocalypse that spreads from the northernmost part of the world, making what she and my S/I do up there a culmination of our arcs.

The details are a bit fuzzier on that, since that's stuff that the books haven't covered yet and I don't think it'll match up with how the show handled it at all, but I've already got some ideas cooking based on some theory videos I've watched… Ideas that involve the Water/Ice and Fire/Shadow dichotomies in their world, with my S/I and Meli each embodying one of them, making the relationship thematically important to how things get resolved. :3c

There's a brief pause. Sans hesitates for a moment.

Angel takes a long moment to think, raising a hand to her chest as her head tilts.

She seems to catch herself mid thought and suddenly shakes her head, brightening again.

If there is at least one thing I can credit FE for doing better than Tales in localization, it's not trying to actively go out of their way for an entire game to avoid subtext or direct text between two men that is romantic or implied romantic. Funny when it's so present that the attempt doesn't even work; infuriating that it was attempted to begin with.

So as much as I often have issues with some of FE's localizations, at least they have a leg up on loc Tales for that.

idea for a story:

omg i came up with an idea a while ago for a fic where yosano and kyouka are assigned a case together where a homicide case where a woman may or may not have killed her husband in his sleep, but when they go to investigate, the cops sort of just brush them off, not believing they're actually capable of solving the case. and i shan't say anymore in case i do write it one day :-)

Do they share any hobbies or interests? How do these things bring them together?

Well, of course they do share a mutual love for cars, even if AJ’s interest lies more in modifying and suping them up then actually driving them, and, of course, all of the craziness the Toretto family gets up to and breaking the law in general. And these things bring them together in a lot of ways; in addition to AJ’s ties with the Shaw family quite literally being the reason they met in the first place, spending time with the team on adrenaline-fuelled adventures and committing smaller crimes together in between missions allows them to bond and reaffirm all the things they love about each other.

How do they feel about nicknames/pet names? If they like them, what pet names do they use? If they hate them, why do they feel that way?

AJ doesn’t like them very much, mostly because he’s kind of awkward with affection directed at him in general, but he doesn’t mind when Roman calls him “babe” or “baby”. Roman’s a bit better about them, but he’s still not comfortable with anything too mushy - he does really like when AJ calls him “love,” though.

Do they have a difficult time when separated from each other, or are they fairly independent?

They are both fairly independent people, but because of AJ’s anxiety, he tends to have the harder time when Rome’s off without him. It isn’t that he doesn’t trust Roman, but he does know the other man’s reckless tendencies all too well, and he often worries that he’ll get himself into danger if AJ isn’t there to act as his impulse control. Roman is a lot better about being left without his boyfriend; depending on where AJ’s going or if he knows where he is, he might worry, but mostly he trusts AJ to keep himself safe.

How do they keep in contact when they’re apart? Do they write letters, talk on the phone, or simply wait out the time?

They’re not often apart after AJ becomes an official member of the Toretto team, but when they are, they usually content themselves with texting each other, or doing a video call if there’s time for it; neither of them could stand just waiting out the time until they’re reuinited.

Do they enjoy PDA, or are they more private with affection?

They may hold hands in public or, if they’re going their separate ways, share a quick kiss before they go, but nothing beyond that; AJ’s too awkward with affection for anything else in the presence of others, and although Roman has gotten to a much better place with his feelings about his sexuality and love for AJ, there’s still a part of him that gets nervous at the thought of being too affectionate around other people.

What songs remind you of their relationship?

Would they ever get matching tattoos? If yes, what would these look like?

I don’t know if they ever actually would, and if they did it would be AJ’s first and only one because he’s terrified of needles, but if they did, the tattoos would be matching sports cars on their forearms.

How well do they communicate? Are they open with their feelings/thoughts or more reserved? Why?

They are… not fantastic at communicating, mainly because neither of them are very good with emotions in general (AJ more with properly communicating them and Roman more with expressing them in general). This can cause problems in their relationship, but they do try to make the effort because they know it’s important.

How do they care for each other when one of them is wounded/sick?

If it’s a person who’s hurt Roman, AJ will actually get angry, raring to go out and get revenge on the person who hurt him, but he will make sure he’s okay and his wounds are properly tended too first. If he’s sick, however, he will absolutely dote on his boyfriend, making sure he has everything he needs and checking up on him as constantly as he dares without getting annoying.

Roman isn’t as good at taking care of people, it doesn’t come naturally to him, but he will make sure to be right by AJ’s side and lean on the people around him for extra support. If AJ’s injured, he’ll leave the patching up to Mia or Brian, hold AJ’s hand the whole time, and be at his side the whole time he recovers; if he’s sick, he’ll call Tej because he makes the best chicken noodle soup, and make sure to make a list of all the things Mia told him help best for sick people so he never forgets for next time.

Do they wear each other’s clothes/jewelry?

It’s mainly AJ wearing Roman’s clothes, since AJ’s are too small for Roman to wear, but he will occasionally snatch a shirt or jacket that Roman will vehemently deny that he finds cute, and they also get matching chain necklaces after two years together.

How do they comfort each other when one of them is upset? Is this method of comfort effective?

AJ isn’t very good at verbal comfort, so his usual method of comforting Roman is just to tuck himself into his boyfriend’s side and lay his head on his shoulder, giving Roman all the time he needs to speak or return the contact and making it clear that he can tell AJ to leave if he needs to. It’s his way of making it clear that he’s right there with Rome no matter what, and though it may not always work immediately, it does always work.

Roman, however, is a very verbal person, as we know, so if AJ is upset or overwhelmed, his usual tactic is to just start talking - telling a random funny story, sharing memories about him and Brian as kids, anything lighthearted that he can think of. It’s a trick for bringing AJ out of his head and cheering him up a bit, and though it can be hit-or-miss, it’s always done with the best of intentions.
