I am SO MAD that Murderbot book 6 takes place before Murderbot book 5. Should it matter? No, not really, but I personally would have liked a big ol' warning so I could have read them in the chronological order. I don't know why it is bothering me so much but it IS.
It's like 'But I ALREADY KNOW what happens!!'
(Maybe it's being neurospicy. maybe it's a quirk of personality.)

So what’s the deal with the Ashen-Streaked Doctor and the Scarlet-Fanged Dreamer?
Well, first comes the difficult question of what he is. The easiest answer is ‘werewolf’; he is still chained to the moon and its phases, and stress transforms him, too. His body twists and cracks until it becomes lupine, and all his rational thoughts vanish behind a new, animalistic front. He remains like this for a night on average, and then the painful process of returning to a human shape begins. Most of the time, he remembers nothing from his time transformed.
But why?
The Doctor, in a way, becomes trapped within his own mind. He is caged within dreams and nightmares alike, interacting with them as though they were Parabola itself— maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. Regardless, his mind does its best to fill in the blanks on how he got into a dream scenario; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Lately, he’s been more aware that he’s dreaming, which means he’s transformed…
What about the Scarlet-Fanged Dreamer?
Even though his rational thought is locked away in a dream, a body needs something to pilot it. What lays behind is his animal instinct: the beast that comes out to protect itself and provide for its master, the body. Doc has taken to calling her ‘Scarlet’, in an attempt to both separate the horror from himself and to lessen his fear by giving her an identity.
Are they separate beings, though?
That is… a complicated matter. Doc would say yes and no. He has had dreams of interacting with Scarlet, trying to tame the beast or fight her off. He has felt her impulse on occasion, tempting him to shed his human form in times of great stress or danger. But… those are just his thoughts, aren’t they? His dreams are symbolism, those temptations the result of adrenaline and strong self-preservation. Maybe. Maybe not.
Perhaps, either by outside intervention or a will to distance himself from the monstrosity he has become, he has willed something new into existence.
Or maybe She is Him, even if He refuses to truly see himself as Her.
After all, she dreams. Just as he does.

imagine dying 17 years ago to your best friend, making your kids think that you abandoned them, and then living with your niece when she’s 12 and then locking her in a tower where you died with you when she’s like 18 because the whole town wants to kill her because she’s a witch

Might be strange sounding, but the card reveals/banlists always come in 2 different perspectives for me, irrelevant of which banlist I'm playing under; because I write fics, I have to contend with the banlist at times (a majority of the time it's based on the sort of half-tcg, half-ocg Master Duel banlist with Anime Specific Additions.)
So when new cards come out I have to judge them not only by what I can figure out from their effects and traits (combined with what's currently meta, and if there's anything that wants to play the new cards, whilst being mindful of banlist differences), I also have the joy of internally discussing the value of a deck when its in a fictional setting.
I don't think anyone normally thinks about if a deck's theme is strong enough to tie a character to it, let alone if a deck's theme is too strong and tying a character to it is like Akihiko Sanada's obsession with protein in anything that isn't mainline persona (Like the Q games.)
Also makes engines less appealing.
#marwospeaking#Mikan plays Xyz-based Harpies. Manon plays Ashened. and Risa plays Memento trying to pretend its not a fusion deck#are these good decks? maybe only Memento. Do they fit the characters? surprisingly yes#Mikan's kind of like. pretty to look at. but not fun to interact with in any way. Manon wants to set her cell on fire (out of frustration)#and Risa's memory is so spotty she has zero idea who she is besides very basic details like her name (and how to play Memento main deck)#If you asked me to build someone who plays Despia. I could. If you asked me to build someone who plays Snake Eye. I could not.#Primoredial? sure! White Woods? maybe! Raizeol? ...sure. great archetype for engineers/mechanics?#Goblin Biker? Sure! Sky Striker? ehhh maybe? Fiendsmith? No. Yubel? ... only they play themself I'm fairly certain#These aren't really inspiring decks (the current meta ones I mean) in a way you'd really want for a character deck#(Kashtira wasn't either. admittedly)#They're small collections of cards that play half their deck as staples. what the hell kind of character can you build from that??#Before anyone asks. Mimighoul I could absolutely make a character for (in the same vein as Flip Turner). same with poor Tistina#Fiendsmith's theme is obviously strong. Its just one of Those kinds of decks where either everything else is powercrept. or it feels..#.. too small of a deck to do anything interesting with going pure with a few techs for the character#(some characters don't play pure. but when they do; those decks get combined support. Ojama Armed Dragon for example)#(Odd-eyes Performapal Magician and Onomats are the two others I can think of that do this. Yusei's pile does not count)#Another issue is when you have a set victor for a duel. but one character has a deck that's a calibre above what the victor will be using..#.. like Trickstar vs Cyberse Pile (might be multiple calibres). It becomes either not very fun or a very ass-pull looking victory#worse if it's a plot point duel with a lot of weight. even worse when it's too early on for 'oh they've grown as a duellist'#I'm rambling. anyway point is Secret Card Analysis Type: Fic Writer That Writes Duels

Hello! I was trying to write up a calling card from Jules/The Partial Performer, but I'm not sure what they and Doc might have in common- that being said, this is now an excuse to ask if he has any strong opinions on theatre in general or in the Neath!
Hello! Let’s see.. On the surface, Doc’s experience with theatre was pretty nonexistent. When he was younger, his parents didn’t really bother with the arts much- besides, seeing plays and operas/operettas and ballets was a waste of money (in their eyes) which would be better spent on supplies or saved up for the future. The Doctor never really agreed with them on that front (as he rarely did anyway), but he didn’t control the finances.
The first (and likely only) time he’d ever seen anything in theatre was 1874, during his schooling, when he was invited by some of his higher-class friends to accompany them to Vienna. There, he saw Die Fledermaus’s premiere; he can’t remember much of it musically, nowadays, but he recalls being highly amused by the sheer amount of antics at play in the plot. Sadly, that would be the only thing he’d get to watch in theatre until coming to the Neath- he quickly grew too busy with school, and then life. He just didn’t have the time to see more, nor the immediate need. Not to say he hated theatre! He definitely respected the arts and wished he had more time to watch things! He just.. got busy. Really busy.
In the Neath, however, he quickly grew to find interest in theatre- every so often, he takes a break from work to see some play or symphony. Now that he’s found a footing in high society (and made an acquaintance of a rather affectionate devil…), he frequents the theatre more often than he ever did before.
He even penned his own tragic play for the Empress’ court! Forced to make a 14 act play by the ones who employed him, Doc decided to work around that by making a splitting narrative… A tale of two lovers, torn between the surface and the Neath… The acts are split between both mains, with the Neath lover trying to return to the surface while the Surface lover tries in vain to move on (while still hoping their lover returns…)
