One thing about having had yasu as an oc previously to making him a touken danshi is that it's sooooo much more natural to me to just call him Yasu but I do think it makes more sense to address him as Taikyuu since like... Just generally speaking, saying "Yasusada" means yamatonokami obv LOL

So what I'm saying is a) use whichever u like and b) if you see me switching back and forth... Shhh...

Also one big part of me just... Thinking about him in general is always always ... Him vs. Hasebe lol

Like ... I say "they'll totally butt heads" but I would not be surprised if they wound up at least almost straight-up fighting, if not actually doing so lol. They're both hotheaded enough, and one of them is bound to say something to set the other one off. And then they get sent on a mission, maybe wind up cornered or separated together and AGH... Them fighting so hard to protect each other and like. Gaining some mutual respect...

Like it wouldn't stop them from fighting at all but I also like to imagine that Yasu might often be seen lurking around wherever toudans are summoned, hoping it might be another of harada's swords/spear... Of course yasu wouldn't want to admit that he's waiting for that, or that in some ways he feels a bit lonely, and maybe... Maybe Hasebe would check in on him... Like I think they're only friends on the battlefield or behind closed doors lol

Or maybe when there's alcohol involved LOL

Completely unrelated but I also have always headcanoned that yasu likes to dance, whether it be pretty elegant dances or hard intense choreo LOL he's very flexible and agile and it's a harmless way to get energy out

i bet midare would think he's cool and ask him to join their little idol group jdjdjdksjdjs but yasu would be like "no that's childish" but midare is like "pleeeeeease? 🥺🥺🥺 maybe not full-time if you don't want... But...maybe you could feature or something?" and he is actually a bit surprised and definitely swayed by the actual interest and begrudgingly accepts to feature only to have an absolute blast and teach them maybe some harder moves idk

(also in this same vein sometimes I try to imagine yasu in myu but I haven't the slightest idea of anyone to play him or anything... I (still) have Ignition from Hanakage stuck in my head so naturally I'm envisioning him maybe dueting with hasebe or something HAHA)

Also this might be a little odd LOL but

I've always said also that yasu hates to be restricted/restrained/contained etc, it makes him anxious MAD and thus he fights harder..? (in d&d he would absolutely have a level in barbarian. he's got the rage). So that's my explanation to why he wears a harness under his (battle) getup. keeps him mad but also a bit grounded/alert. When he gets injured and the harness breaks he is Unleashed(TM)

I'm still not sure how exactly he and Yamatonokami see each other. I think Yasu sees him similar to just like. A brother who grew up in a different household y'know. They're both shinsengumi swords but were under different masters and eventually split off so they're... A little estranged.

A lot is lost in the tags for this one so I'm just gonna gently get up on my parapet and say Tsuwamono is, without a question, the best of Toumyu and arguably one of the best stories told in the long and varied tapestry of extended Touken Ranbu media. It's easily up there with Tenden as sister series aiming to dissect and study 'perfect' characters and show the aspects of them that make them human and how their humanness serves to make them more admirable and powerful in retrospect, of how fragility and vulnerability are luxuries for those with the world on their shoulders, of how perfection is just another burden for those who already care entirely too much for those around them.

If you've never seen Tsuwamono but are interested in Mikazuki, Kogitsunemaru, the Sanjo swords as a whole or the Genji brothers and would like to see well crafted, well explored, and extremely tightly written interpretations of them as they struggle through the lines of their responsibility as swords vs their duties to their fellows as companions, brothers in arms and friends then I'd highly recommend you read these subs. While there are subtleties that will be lost through being unable to watch the performance, the script is strong enough to stand on its own as a perfectly serviceable piece of literature and the OP's extremely thorough translator's notes help to uncover the some complexities of the script that are missed on a viewing of the production!

Really an absolutely gorgeous production and I will absolutely resurrect from the dead just to make posts about it I swear to god -

Musical Touken Ranbu: Tsuwamonodomo ga Yume no Ato english sub

A passion project if there's ever been one, it's been a longstanding want of mine to finally do this! Needless to say, Tsuwamono and everything it meant is still my favourite plot from Toumyu! I love its character-driven and intricate writing, its heartrending acting choices, as well as the way it invites one to think about what characters think and why, and why they do or don't (dare to) do the things they do.

However, another important reason that I'm letting myself indulge in this, is that recent Toumyu has taken a turn away from this plot, changing the way how Mikazuki is framed, tying different characters to themes that were tied to Kogitsunemaru, and put those characters into roles that would originally have been most natural for Kogitsunemaru to follow.

In that light, then, I hope that these subtitles will allow you to see, even if it's just the smallest sliver, what I loved in Toumyu's take of Kogi and Mika up to and including Kotobuki. To see that it was beautiful. Because I think it was. 💙💛🌙🦊

Keep in mind that the files in the folder below are only the subtitle files, timed and tled to the blu-ray and DMM senshuuraku distribution. The folder also includes a pdf with translation notes, some background information where I felt it would add, and just a little bit of eager gushing about the references made.

Crystal Tokyo Challenge: Day 1

Day 1: Your favorite adaptation of Sailor Moon.

This is usually my knee-jerk reaction to being asked to decide on my favorite Sailor Moon adaptation:

Particularly because I began participating in the fandom around a time that it felt like you were either a ��good” Sailor Moon fan who preferred the “right” versions and shipped the “right” ships, or else you were a bad fan suffering from nostalgia for whatever your preferred adaptation was. And which one you were depended on who you were asking. 

My ultimate favorite “adaptation” is probably something of a patchwork of all the different versions. There are things I enjoy from all of them, and things I dislike from all of them as well. And some that I enjoy in one version which I disliked when another version did the same thing.

It may be predictable for people who have read some of my other posts, but I definitely have a strong tendency to gravitate towards the musicals even when I intend to watch/read a different version, especially Saturn Fukkatsu Hen (even though some of the jokes have definitely not aged well) and Eien Densetsu (original and revision), and, most recently, La Reconquista and Petite Etrangere. And I think a big part of this is that, even when they seem to start off more manga-based or more anime-based, they tend to wind up doing their own thing.

Actually, I really like PGSM for that same reason, and the only reason the musicals hedge it out by a very, very slight margin is because of the music and the theater tech/staging elements. And because PGSM doesn’t have the lights come up on Rubeus doing situps in the middle of the stage for no reason.

In spite of that slight preference, if you’re asking about the story and characters themselves, then I would put them on equal footing for similar reasons: love what they did with the characters, what they did with the stories, and the other stuff they added to it as well. (Though Sailor Mercury being my favorite, these versions’ tendencies to emphasize her probably doesn’t hurt, either.)

These two iterations are also the ones which encouraged me to mix and match canons in creating my own AU’s and headcanons, instead of trying to be completely faithful to one version or other. Though I’ll try not to get too into that until I get to that prompt.

So yeah, I would say that probably my favorite adaptations are Seramyu, with PGSM as a very very very close second.

A character isn’t real until you can picture them at their daily routines.

like, have any you actually thought of this when you see a specific character? In media they don’t always include the daily routines of their characters and often these just get completely ignored.

Have a character that is well-built/athletic/a seasoned fighter? They have to fit training and exercise into their routines in order to maintain that level of performance. How often do they go to the gym, go out for runs/jogs, parkour, cross-fit, martial arts? Who do they train with if they have to have a sparing partner? 

Also, what do they eat and are they on dietary schedule? (how often do they need to go pee/poop in a day based on this?)

What about when a character wakes up in the morning? Do they even need to sleep? Do they brush their teeth before or after breakfast? How often do they bathe? 

What about their clothing? Why are they wearing the same thing every day? Is this outfit cleaned every day or every other day? Do they have several copies of the same thing? Who cleans it?

But really, pick a character and run through this. If their characterization falls apart at the seams when you run them through the gambit of questions: then the are not a well constructed character and needs retooling.
