Do you ever sit and think about how Xiao promised to essentially be Lumine's executioner. Do you ever think about how he said he'd kill for her if she wished so. Do you ever think about how Xiao spent thousands of years participating in bloodshed and massacre and thinks that it's all he was meant to be. Do you ever think about how he sees Lumine as a pure soul that deserves none of that suffering he pretty much drowned himself in. Do you ever think about how he can only feel useful to Lumine as a weapon and thus offered himself to her as one.

BUT ALSO! Do you ever think about how Lumine NEVER calls for Xiao to fight for her? Do you ever think about how she almost died fighting a GOD in Inazuma and only called Xiao after the whole ordeal was over and she wanted him to eat a dish? Do you ever think about how she absolutely refuses to use Xiao as the weapon he thinks he is? Do you ever think about how Lumine sees Xiao as a pure soul that deserves none of the torment and endeavors to give him peace in any way she can?

I just finished watching the 1966 Hammer flick Plague of the Zombies, and I'm fascinated by it. The premise is that the squire of a small Cornish village, who was raised in the Caribbean before being called home to take over after his father's death, has turned to voodoo to try to get workers to reopen the tin mines that made the village's fortune.

The movie sits neatly in an uneasy horror space between the original horror of the zombie - of your will being overridden by another's, of continuing to be enslaved even after death should have released you from all earthly woes - and Romero's ghouls and everything that they spawned. A nightmare sequence features hands pushing up out of fresh-dug graves, dead faces closing in all around one of our protagonists - but in the end, the only person the zombies are truly dangerous to is the man who created them. The true horror of the story is the absolute power that the squire holds over the people of the village, made metaphorical as voodoo.

The tin mines were closed after multiple fatal accidents caused the men of the village to refuse to work there anymore, so the squire removed their ability to refuse by killing and raising them as zombies. At the end of the day, he owns these people, body and soul, and there's nothing that the police or the vicar or anyone else who is supposed to be responsible for the villagers' wellbeing can do, so long as the squire holds this position of absolute power.

If you feel you simply must transplant zombie horror based in voodoo into a white European context, I feel like using it to highlight the injustices of a system of government directly descended from feudalism is not the worst choice you could make.

How does one go from not even hiding the fact that she's dating a god. To drilling into her daughter's head that 'love is weak! It's not what you want!'....?

To be clear, I'm not trying to pull up any sympathy for Maleficent. No abusive parent deserves sympathy.

It's just Rise of Red makes me wonder....

What happened before, and in the early months when Mal was born that changed Maleficent that much? Into the insane, loveless lizard that we know her to be?

I believe some of the answers may be in the song 'Evil Like Me' the lines: 'I was once like you my child, slightly insecure.' 'Argued with my mother too.' Thought I was mature, but I put my heart aside, and I used my head.' Give us hints.

It seems that Mal wasn't the only one who got the 'love is weak' mantra drilled into her.

Maleficent's mother was probably hissing in her ear the entire time she was dating Hades. Maybe some time that they married to. They probably had many 'arguments' about it. Just slowly wearing down Maleficent's teenage faith in her relationship. She made her have doubts, and since on the Isle talking about emotion was seen as 'weak' Malf probably never talked to Hades about it. Or if she did, it was brought up in a fight.

Things were made even easier for Lilith (Idk I'm naming Malf's mom for shorter typing) to mess with Malficent's head becuse being cut off from her magic by the Isle barrier, was most likely messing with her mental health as well, it was a drip, drip, drip combo of being fed doubts, having no proper emotional outlet, and losing a part of herself that would have been similar to losing a limb.

And this time there was no 'out' of getting off the Isle to show that emotion was okay/get magic access back. So Hades left and, in a self forefilling prophecy, proved her mother's evil whispers and Maleficent's niggling, shoved back doubts right. Turning the evil but open to love/loyalty teen, into the hard untrusting insane adult. That never lets herself (or any child of hers) 'use her heart' again.

Zeth's usually a civil, non-confrontational person, but when it comes to interacting with this guy (who is technically his distant cousin), he's willing to throw in some punches at first sight😭
