This week in 1986, Ozzy Osbourne embarked on The Ultimate Sin tour with Metallica in tow as the opening act. Metallica had just released Master of Puppets on March 3rd, and given the obvious quality of the album, they were eager to perform it for as many people as possible. After playing with Ozzy for six months, Metallica began a headlining tour in September, but it was cut short due to the tragic death of Cliff Burton on 9/27/86 (the tour resumed in November after Jason Newsted joined the band). Ozzy's tour, on the other hand, ended with a homeless benefit at The Hollywood Palladium on February 23, 1987, which proved to be the final performance for Jake E. Lee and Phil Soussan.

Wednesday, September 25: Ozzy Osbourne, "Never Know Why"
R.I.P. Randy Castillo (1950-2002)
The Ultimate Sin was Ozzy Osbourne’s biggest hit as a solo artist at the time, but ultimately got a bad rap from everyone, especially the Ozzman himself.  To be sure, no small amount of this was self-inflicted: Ron Nevison’s production was unusually junky, there was an overwhelming whiff of hairspray and the lyrics (as usual, mostly supplied by Bob Daisley) were a good amount lazier than previously, and Ozzy’s initial claim that every song on the album was about the threat of nuclear war (when it was more like every track was about him doing lots of cocaine) made it even worse.  But there were more than a few actually enjoyable songs on the record, with charging and fluid Jake E. Lee riffing, energetic Randy Castillo drumming and some rather catchy vocal melodies.  “Never Know Why” had a lame chorus (“You’ll never know why- WE ROCK!”- really?), but the verses moved and swung with purpose, and Lee’s solo was a pure ripper.  It was fun and fully metallic in a way that was much more intentional than even the Randy Rhoads albums, and had a particular verve as a result.  To be sure, if Peruvian marching powder had a sound this wouldn’t be far removed from it, but “Never Know Why” was still fiery and charming in a distinctly Ozzy way, and demonstrated that The Ultimate Sin was one of his more underrated efforts.
