Mel Chin: ‘KNOWMAD’ (1999)

I recently got into the horror visual novel Scarlet Hollow by Black Tabby Games and it's sO good!! Abby Howard's visuals and characters have my whole heart. These are my faves from the roster and my player character, Jude, in the middle. she's better at talking to animals than people, so of course I had to draw Dustin too.

Had board game night with friends yesterday. I'm not a huge board game nerd, but I'm trying to spend more time with friends these days.

ANYWAYS!

We played Mysterium Park and Century Spice Road. Here are my general thoughts.

Mysterium Park

One player is a Ghost and helps a group of psychic solve their murder through vision hints pointing to the culprit and location.

The art is gorgeous (as expected) and a little dark. Because the locations all have that creepy park vibe and the characters are from a similar Era, you really have to think about what sets them apart when giving hints.

Playing with people you don't know well is hard both for the ghost and psychics because you don't know how the others think or what might be important to them.

The instructions were... quite complex, but in the end while playing it made sense.

Had a lot of fun, will surely buy it.

Century Spice Road

I had never played this game but played similar games before (I.e. Splendor) so I wasn't totally lost.

The rules were fairly light and straightforward so even if most of us were new to the game we felt like we grasped it quickly. Each turn was fairly fast because you only get one action per turn.

I think it was interesting that sometimes you get a card out of necessity but because actions are so limited, you may end up building your whole strategy around what you got in the first few rounds.

Would not buy it but would definitely play again.

OKAY YALL!! I’ve finished everyone that I wanted to do!! So it’s the Hawthornes + Avery and Libby + tgg contestants mainly spoiler free i guess…? I might do more characters if i have ideas or I might switch to different books and do it for them (examples: agggtm, the debutants, shatter me, yada yada) It also only lets me put 10 photos so i’ll make a second post with the other two.

very random question and don’t feel obligated to reply but your style reminds me of dark souls/pathologic/those types of games in general. that might just be due to the historical context but i’m curious, are you a fan of games like that?

If I had to guess it could be just the vaguely historical setting, religious overtones and occasional darker themes? My knowledge on Dark Souls et al. is sparse at best, people have been telling me to give them a try but I haven't gotten around to it.
