Narrative by Suzanne Ingrao

An eloquent cacophony---an oxymoron?  This art guides us through a provocative venture as we travel and examine presumed opposing forces toward reconciliation of thought.  It exists throughout this art piece.  Colors conquer, ridicule our need for definitive boundaries or specific language.  The vibrancy creates an amazing blend that defies dissonance.  This is a puzzle requiring no need for solution, as the pieces resent the whole and in fact ironically define it.

A headless figure atop a motorcycle clings off balance for safety against seemingly frivolous symbols of our domineering advertising and glorification of discarded materials. Time continues in this painting, as we feel the ongoing smothering effects of this human figure becoming gradually buried, disappearing beneath useless material castaways. The slight touch of poignancy appears at the lower left, a bland colored sullen animal defeated beneath the powerful dark versus bright painted forces surrounding it.

This brilliant application of colors captures our senses and lifts us far above an all too familiar realm of mediocrity.  We are ensconced within a visual chaos that invites a dare to finally envelop and welcome its messenger.  We are products.  Our environment has confirmed this, and this brave painting represents all it entails.  This ability to create a sense of stimulating comfort which invites realization and even inspiration to viewers (despite a disturbing concept) is not to be underestimated.  Congratulations to this artist for accepting the challenge.

January 2, 2015, I committed to making a photographic self-portrait, paired with a short personal text, every day for 365 days. I didn’t know what 2015 would bring, but I had a feeling that I was going to need a way to see myself, to express myself, and to heal myself. I wasn’t convinced that I would be able to keep the commitment; I was depressed, wading through years of trauma and abuse, and scared to death to know the truth. . Talking To MySelf / 365 :: An Odyssey Unraveling is a raw story of self-discovery and daily resilience; of living a lie, awakening to the truth, feeling the pain, dying to the past, stepping into the uncertainty of every day, and slowly building a sound foundation. Socially and culturally, psychological and emotional pain are taboo subjects; dirty little secrets best covered up with a fake smile and a handshake. Breaking down isn’t pretty. Breaking through is beautiful: painfully beautiful and beautifully painful. . The images, edits, text boxes, and diptychs are all made with my phone, the most democratic photographic tool available today. The images are unpredictable in concept and method, driven by the narrative. I look at me, I hide from me, and I use a mirror to address the multiplicity of self. Multiple exposures, painting with light, masking and mark-making are employed as tools of expression.
