"We have a new AI feature!" "With the power of AI..." "Our AI..."
I am going to abandon technology and start only inscribing things on clay tablets

A new paper from researchers at Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon University finds that as humans increasingly rely on generative AI in their work, they use less critical thinking, which can “result in the deterioration of cognitive faculties that ought to be preserved.” “[A] key irony of automation is that by mechanising routine tasks and leaving exception-handling to the human user, you deprive the user of the routine opportunities to practice their judgement and strengthen their cognitive musculature, leaving them atrophied and unprepared when the exceptions do arise,” the researchers wrote.
[...]
“The data shows a shift in cognitive effort as knowledge workers increasingly move from task execution to oversight when using GenAI,” the researchers wrote. “Surprisingly, while AI can improve efficiency, it may also reduce critical engagement, particularly in routine or lower-stakes tasks in which users simply rely on AI, raising concerns about long-term reliance and diminished independent problem-solving.” The researchers also found that “users with access to GenAI tools produce a less diverse set of outcomes for the same task, compared to those without. This tendency for convergence reflects a lack of personal, contextualised, critical and reflective judgement of AI output and thus can be interpreted as a deterioration of critical thinking.”
[...]
So, does this mean AI is making us dumb, is inherently bad, and should be abolished to save humanity's collective intelligence from being atrophied? That’s an understandable response to evidence suggesting that AI tools are reducing critical thinking among nurses, teachers, and commodity traders, but the researchers’ perspective is not that simple.

Elon Musk alongside a group of investors want to buy OpenAI from Sam Altman for $97.4 billion dollars.
Sam Altman responded with "no thank you but we will buy twitter for $9.74 billion if you want"
This comes after Trump plans to invest $500 billion dollars to beef up AI capabilities in the United States in the ongoing fight with China making Sam Altman lead the charge
While Americans struggle with cost of living, groceries on the rise, and Elon invading through everyone’s personal information… two billionaires are battling it out for control of OpenAI with houses Chat GPT

I want an AI companion on my personal hardware but not a girlfriend, more like a pet sled dog that does work for me. I just want something to guard my internet presence like a dog guards my physical presence. Much rather have this than a sex bot.

People aren’t mad about a single AI picture, by the way. You’ve been a champion of generative AI in system spaces for a long time now. Time to accept some responsibility and leave it in the past. Saying “I’m just one person, so what’s the harm?” is a cop out.
Would you say that to someone who litters or commits some other unethical act which harms the environment? We all have individual responsibilities to do what we can to protect our planet.
The thing is, a lot of this AI hysteria is also fingerpointing by the actual elites who are responsible for the damage to the environment. It's propaganda meant to keep focus on the individuals when most pollution originates from megacorporations. No, people shouldn't litter. But a lot of the world has been wrapped up in "carbon footprint" ideology that places blame for the environment on individuals and distracts from how most of the pollution in the world is coming from the richest people at the top.
A lot of AI hysteria right now is depending on using big numbers to trick our small monkey brains without giving any perspective.
The statistic (which may be misleading in itself since I hear AI facilities reuse water) claiming that an AI prompt uses 16 oz of water, sounds scary when you imagine millions of people using the those prompts.
But it's decidedly less scary when you have the context that the average golf course uses 2 billion gallons of water a day. It would take every single person in the entire world generating an image to use even half the water of a single golf course.
There are over 38,000 gold courses in the world.
In order to use as much water in a day as the world's golf courses alone, EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON THE PLANET would need to make over 75,000 prompts a day!
And remember, there are only 86,400 seconds in a day! If you somehow managed to generate an image per second, you'd get 3 hours to sleep.
But we aren't raging at golf courses, are we? Why? Even when there are droughts and normal people are limited on how much water they can use, golf courses are often given exemptions by local governments and allowed to continue to drain water supplies to keep their fields green.
To me, keeping environmentalists distracted by random AI users generating free prompts is just another example of the media using sleight of hand to keep people distracted from the worst offenders to the environment, and focused on each other instead.

Read More: Good News From Israel
Tumblr media
The song that has gone viral recently in Israel is "Od Yoter Tov", meaning "Even more good" by Yair Elitzur.  It sums up what this newsletter has been publicizing about Israeli achievements over the last fifteen years.  Recent news is no exception. The medical articles include an Israeli breakthrough that allows therapies to do more good only to the parts of the body that need treatment. Israeli Arabs are working in many more good healthcare jobs than they were employed in fifteen years ago. Israeli startups have been donating their valuable shares to more good causes. More political and business leaders have visited Israel to see how good the future of the Middle East could be.  Israeli schoolchildren will soon acquire more good experience of robotics and AI at an earlier age. And more perishable food will remain in good condition thanks to the rollout of innovative Israeli packaging. Meanwhile, there were more good reasons for the BDS thugs to pack-up as the US announced plans to integrate Israeli AI, and the Irish bought helicopters controlled by Israeli technology. There were more good results for two Israeli startups in the Business Intelligence Group's Innovation awards, plus a top-listed Israeli wine, and an Israeli winner of a Grammy award. Finally, despite some awful scenes, there are more good news stories related to post Oct 7 2023 in this issue than ever before. The photo (TY Sharon) is a message to encourage readers to pass on more good news newsletters to those who have yet to see Israel in its TRUE light.
