Artemis will disassemble and clean a fountain pen with the same level of intensity as Butler disassembling and cleaning one of his guns.

@orangerosebush's post here, with my comment and @fowlblue's tags today got me thinking.
Artemis Senior has been teaching his son matters of business from a young age. Not only was Artemis, at 11 years old, discussing stocks with his father, but Fowl Senior had been imparting his wisdom onto his son for years by that point, discussing the ever-increasing value of gold with him before tucking him into bed. Even outside of pure monetary value, Sr. had tried to go legitimate with his business dealings, leading Artemis to have a few legal ventures of his own.
We also see very early on in the books that Artemis has been regularly using Butler as a resource for his plots: bouncing ideas off him was apparently a fairly common tactic when he was scheming.
Both Artemis Senior and Butler are interested in (or at least, not opposed to) educating Artemis on the ways of their lifestyle(s). It would be Artemis Senior who would have taught his son the value of banks and safety deposit boxes and hidden safes but it was Butler who was actively working with Artemis to rob those safety deposit boxes.
In the same vein of breaking-and-entering, TLC also gives us the fun little moment where Butler hands Artemis his own lockpicks, to get into the workings of the bomb.
With one line we learn that Artemis knows how to pick locks, but does not have his own set of lockpicks. Butler, on the other hand, has both the tools and knowledge how to use them. Partnered with a brief mention in TTP of some the specific trades of those previously employed by Artemis Senior (including such things as crime lords, insider traders, and cat burglars), we can extrapolate that Artemis Senior would generally hire someone to pick a lock for him, rather than do so himself.
It's pretty logical to conclude then that Artemis learned big-picture management from his father, and day-to-day skillsets from his bodyguard.
Essentially, Artemis Senior taught Artemis how to run a criminal empire. Butler taught Artemis how to be a criminal.
#artemis fowl#artemis senior#domovoi butler#and this doesn't even get into the aliases butler has!#he clearly has a lot of his own but then Artemis ALSO gets some#'what's our cover' 'i thought Stephan Baskir and his uncle Constantin'#Artemis Sr put his own damn name on the boat he was using to get cola to russia#you know damn well *he* didn't encourage Arty to hide his identity#(i'm not getting into the needs of artemis to hide his identity due to being a child and wanting respect afforded an adult in these tags#that's a rant for a different time)#there's such a prevalent theme of a Fowl saying 'i want X' and their Butler saying 'i know a guy'#(like 80% of the time the Butler would be The Guy but there's that other 20% where having extra contacts would be helpful)#we see it when Artemis asks Butler to make certain arrangements for capturing Holly and then again getting the mirrored contacts#we see Butler arranging car rentals or drivers and apparently needing to do so quite frequently#yet in TTP Sr just says he'll casually take a limousine where he needs to go#it's probably such a huge part of the Fowl-Butler dynamic to have someone who can actually perform all the necessary minutiae of daily crim#or at least know how to or know someone who knows how to#aaaaand now i'm thinking of how the Butlers are essentially disposable#sure death is a thing but how many Butlers were imprisoned for the sake of saving their Fowl the same fate#if someone's gotta take the fall for a crime it might as well be the person who'd take a bullet for the other#once you've already agreed to be on the wrong side of the law and accepted that you may give up your life (physically) for someone#what's taking it a step further and agreeing to give up your life (metaphorically) by languishing in jail for 10-80 yrs

Actually, now thinking about it, sad headcanon time:
Because Butler refused to go to Artemis’s funeral, Fowl Sr. and Juliet were the ones to carry his casket.

but also he's as smart. as cunning. as capable. he was masterminding a criminal empire before he hit puberty. oh no that party boy lifestyle was coming back to bite him in the ass.

Canon divergence.
Its a small detail in the first book that I've never seen anyone bring up, but when Artemis is setting up his trap for the LEP he makes... a mistake (pause for shocked gasps).
The joy of Artemis's plan is that he wants the fairies to blow him up as cover for his escape, but if there had been one truly pacifist member of the LEP, things could have gone very different.
Artemis, book 1. chapter 6: "You do that. But remember this, none of your race has permission to enter here while I'm alive"
It's generally accepted that the fairies follow the word, if not the spirit, of the law. This can be seen in chapter Chapter 3 when Holly uses a child's cry for help as an invitation into the restaurant. This means that the implications of the words Artemis uses are more important than what he actually means.
"Race" is specified language for an individual species of fairy (elves, Goblins, Dwarves). "Fairies" is the umbrella term. And thus, Artemis saying to an elf "none of your race can enter" could have been taken as "no elves allowed" from a legal POV.
This means they could have, under fairy law, sent in sprites, gnomes, pixies. Hell, it means Mulch and the Troll being sent in wasn't even illegal!
So imagine if, in the middle of the kidnapping, a platoon of sprites flies into Fowl manor. They take down Butler from on high before he even realises what's happened. They extract Holly, since under the "no elves aloud" thing she shouldn't even be there, or they mesmerise Artemis into setting her free. They mind wipe them all, and Artemis forgets all about fairies.
This moment affects everything else in the series.
Holly would have probably been fired, since she got kidnaped and wasn't able to justify that she got half the gold back, since this would have all been handled before Artemis got anywhere near the gold.
Opal and Cudgeon would have taken over Haven, and its doubtful weather they would have been able to get back Artemis Sr safely without fairy assistance.
The Demons would have still been floating in Limbo until their island fell apart, or until Minerva came along and put them in a zoo.
Turnball Root would have escaped prison with no one to stop him as he tried to keep his wife alive.
And it all would have hit the fan if the "peace loving" fairies had actually been as pacifist as they had claimed.

for the adults: what decade (that you've lived through) did you like the fashion of the best? Do you wish it was still in fashion?
Butler: I was a child in the seventies, but the high-waisted pants do a lot for my figure. However, the baggy jackets of the 80s and 90s were great for hiding weapons.
Angeline: I still find every excuse to wear shoulder pads.
Artemis Sr.: The three-piece suit is a classic in any decade.
Holly: The flapper dresses of the twenties were made for my body type, and I loved the parties. It was nice when women started wearing pants, though... I can't imagine chasing down convicts in a skirt.
Mulch: I liked when the shiny broaches and buckles were in. Made people so much easier to steal from.
Foaly: Centaur fashion is so niche and cultural it rarely changes, but there is a trend I hope never comes back. Three words: equine skinny jeans.

Artemis Fowl isn’t human.
Not entirely, at least.
I made this into a red string board first, but I figured this would work well as a list so I could share it with you.
Mind, I am not don’t reading these books, I’m just loving it.
Angeline Fowl
The Fowl lineage is somehow special. I think that the fowl linkage was passed down from Angeline and she has a bit of fairy blood
Angeline is resistant to the influence of the mesmer when Artemis uses it on her. Artemis is also resistant to the mesmer
Angeline is a humanitarian. This is tied back in later
Angeline has an intense reaction to Artemis Sr.’s disappearance. This is also tied in later. Artemis Jr. also has an intense reaction, but he struggles to recognize his reaction as emotional.
Angeline contracted Spellosis or whatever it’s called as a human.
Artemis Fowl Senior
All of Artemis’s personality traits which are distinctly human come from his father
Artemis gets magic
In limbo Artemis is able to control magic despite being “human”
Artemis also found the shared consciousness in limbo more natural than single consciousness.
In limbo Artemis can probe the minds of everyone else. All other mind probes were done via magic. There was a shared consciousness, but Artemis was specifically probing the minds of the others.
“You are changed. A magical creature like us.” Artemis is a magical creature, not a human with magic.
Artemis is subject to fairy rules surrounding dwellings. Humans and demons are not subject to fairy law.
Magic can be dormant
“Magic is in the mind”
Artemis has “echoes of magic” when he lost the stolen magic, which to me implies that he had his own magic echoing around
Pituitary gland
Most important part of this is that opal have herself an artificial pituitary gland which then drained her of magic
Artemis’s puberty was a little delayed, which could be written off as something being different or missing from his pituitary gland
He’s also really short. When he was thirteen he was the right height for a ladder made for fairies.
When he was seventeen he only weighed 10 pounds more than Holly at a similar age.
He’s four feet tall at most.
“Fairies were much more sensitive to their environments than humans.”
Here is where the reactions to Artemis Sr.‘a disappearance tie in
Artemis can talk to and empathize with a lemur after losing the magic. He purred. That’s kinda off topic for this category, but he purred.
Artemis has a dramatic reaction to Holly calling him “Arty”
Appearance
Artemis is repeatedly referred to as not looking quite right.
Holly says he usually looks like healthy corpse
Artemis is very pale.
Artemis has a very angular face. Not many facial attributes are described other than the ones which aren’t human. Holly’s wide brow for example.
Matpat retired so I had to do this.

I dearly want to read a piece that digs into the like, very thinly-hidden tension that suffuses the interactions between Angeline and Butler — without robbing either character of their depth in favor of a simplistic one-character-is-good-and-the-other-wholly-bad approach.
